Midfielder George Dobson signs for Wrexham..cdn1.thewrexhaminsider.com/uploads/38/2024/07/GettyImages-2147964634-1-1024x683.jpgWrexham have signed former Charlton Athletic captain George Dobson on a three-year deal. Midfielder Dobson, 26, opted to leave Charlton this summer and had been expected to complete a move to Hungarian club Fehérvár, but he pulled out due to personal circumstances. Dobson previously played under Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson at Sunderland. “I’m genuinely delighted. It’s the club in the EFL that everyone wants to come to and when I got the opportunity to join it was exciting," Dobson said. “When I spoke to the gaffer, and he showed his interest it felt like an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. “I can’t wait to meet all the supporters and hopefully carry on the success of the club and have an enjoyable season.” Dobson began his youth career with Arsenal and West Ham and spent time at Sparta Rotterdam before an 18-month spell at Walsall, where he had previously been on loan. Dobson moved to Sunderland for an undisclosed fee in July 2019 and had a loan spell at AFC Wimbledon in 2021 before his move to Charlton. He was Charlton’s Player of the Year in 2021-22 and was named captain the following season. “George is a great signing for us. He’s developed really well as a player and is someone we have known about for a while," Parkinson said. “He plays with real personality; he is a great character to have in the building and he has captained Charlton before. “Leadership quality in the group is so important and George will certainly bring that.”

Wrexham sign keeper Callum Burton and defender Seb Revan..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article33251398.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_burton-revan-split.jpgCallum Burton and Sebastian Revan have been signed with Wrexham Wrexham have signed former Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper Callum Burton and left-back Seb Revan from Aston Villa. Burton, 27, who was a free agent after leaving Argyle in May, has signed a deal until the end of the 2025-26 season. Revan, 21, has joined for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract with an option to extend his stay for an additional year. Both played have travelled with Wrexham on their three-game North American tour. Burton has also played for Hull City, Salford City, Chesterfield, and Cambridge United. “I spoke to the Manager, and he told me about the project, and it definitely was the place I wanted to come and play my football,” Burton said. Revan came through Villa’s youth system and won the FA Youth Cup the club in 2021. He made his senior debut against Hibernian in last season’s Europa Conference League having also been on loan at Rotherham United, Grimsby Town and Hereford. “I want to help take the Club as high up the table as we can and add both goals and assists to my game and also the team’s.” Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said of Burton: “Callum’s profile is perfect for what we need to complement our goalkeeping department. “We’re all really looking forward to working with him over the next two years.” On Revan’s signing, Parkinson added: “Seb is a player that stood out for us from his performances in the Championship and he is only going to improve with us,” he said. “He offers us great versatility because he can play both on the right and the left. He’s a good young player and we’re delighted to have him on board.”

Wrexham star announced as released still has year left on contract in embarrassing admin gaffe..By Cameron Winstanleyi2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article33223063.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_Wrexham-v-Bradford-City-Sky-Bet-League-Two.jpgAn administrative error means one of the players Wrexham announced as released is still under contract for another 12 months. Following their promotion to League One in May, Wrexham announced that eight first-team players would be released at the end of the season when their contracts expired, crucial to opening up registration places in the squad to adhere to the English Football League's (EFL) rules. However, it’s been reported that Jordan Tunnicliffe is actually under contract for a further year. Tunnicliffe said his goodbyes to the Red Dragons at the end of the season and is said to have been removed from the first-team WhatsApp group. However, an embarrassing situation has unfolded regarding the 30-year-old, with an admin mistake meaning he has a different contract end date than previously thought. As reported by the Daily Mail, an input mistake was made when Tunnicliffe’s initial contract was drawn up and the expiry on the document was June 2025, instead of June 2024. The defender is now said to be in negotiations with Wrexham as all parties look for a swift resolution to the error. The article continues to claim that Wrexham confirmed they are aware of Tunnicliffe’s contract dilemma and it has been referred to an independent determination. The centre-back joined Wrexham in 2022 when he left then-League Two Crawley Town to drop into the National League.

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney makes another plea to Gareth Bale, urging the former Real Madrid star to come out of retirement for 'one last magical season' in Wales..by Abdi Rashid..
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/11/08/85920703-13512955-Rob_McElhenney_has_made_a_fresh_bid_to_try_to_convince_Gareth_Ba-a-26_1718092534868.jpg Rob McElhenney has made a fresh bid to try to convince Gareth Bale to come out of retirementMcElhenney failed in his attempt to land Bale last year but has not given up as he, once again, urged the Welshman to come out of retirement for 'one last magical season' in his home country. 'Gareth Bale is still technically available. I don't know, I made the plea last year and I'm just going to tell Gareth that the offer's still on the table,' McElhenney said. 'We'll let you off for golf, whenever you need to get off. As long as you come to training once or twice a week we can figure out how to get you 10 minutes on the pitch. 'And the golf courses -- Wales is amongst the most beautiful countries in the world.' Bale retired from professional football in January 2023 in a decision he described as 'the hardest of his career', as he hung up his boots after over 200 career goals including a record 41 for Wales. The 34-year-old has repeatedly insisted he will not be tempted out of retirement, despite the ongoing charm offensive from McElhenney and Reynolds. Asked if he misses the sport at last year's FEVO Sport Industry Awards, Bale said: 'No, I'm enjoying my time away. I started at a young age and felt the time was right.' When pressed on the Wrexham speculation and whether he would join the club, he added: 'No I don't think so, I was more looking for a free round of golf off Rob!'. Wrexham will play in League One next season after securing a third consecutive promotion by finishing second in League Two. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/11/08/85920753-13512955-Bale_retired_in_January_2023_in_a_decision_he_described_as_the_h-a-27_1718092535724.jpgBale retired in January 2023 in a decision he described as 'the hardest of his career'i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/11/08/85921063-13512955-Wrexham_will_play_in_League_One_next_season_after_securing_a_thi-a-25_1718092534587.jpg

Wrexham want to make 'right' transfer decisions..by Simon Stone, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/24/6d4451a1-f755-4f1a-bdf2-5f21c0cedb44.jpgWrexham manager Phil Parkinson is hoping the club come up with the "right" decisions in the transfer market. Parkinson hopes the presence of senior club figures will lead to a clear direction for Wrexham's transfer strategy over the remaining weeks of the transfer window, as he looks to make the improvements he feels are needed for his side to be competitive on their return to the third tier for the first time in 19 years. "We have got Rob [McEhenney, co-owner] and Shaun Harvey flew in yesterday so it is a great chance to review the squad," said Parkinson. "Can we add a little bit of quality? We are speaking to a few players while we are out here. Hopefully we will make the right decisions to take us into the season."

Chelsea take on Wrexham - Chelsea v Wrexham - Thursday 3.30am
Premier League club Chelsea will play their first game under new manager Enzo Maresca against League One side Wrexham.
The Blues will be favourites to win the pre-season friendly but Wrexham head into the match on the back of back-to-back league promotions.
It hasn't been confirmed but it is likely one or both of their Hollywood owners - Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney - will be in attendance.
Wrexham's pre-season so far
Wrexham have already played two pre-season friendlies and have got good results in both matches.
Their first saw them take on League One's Hanley Town and the Welsh club won 5-1.
Next up they played Premier League side Bournemouth and came out with a 1-1 draw.
They next play Chelsea, who they lost 5-0 to last summer, and they will want to close the gap on the Blues.

Wrexham impress in lively display - Chelsea 2-2 Wrexhamichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/a449/live/b043f880-4a48-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpgWrexham certainly impressed against Chelsea at Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, adding to their 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday. It is the Welsh club's second consecutive US pre-season tour, capitalising on their popularity under co-owners, Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, with Phil Parkinson's side preparing for third tier football for the first time since 2005. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/25/d5f45246-0c13-4d1e-8217-0907714a762a.jpgWrexham manager Phil Parkinson believes his side should have beaten "billion-pound team" Chelsea. The newly promoted League One club almost shocked their Premier League rivals in a 2-2 draw watched by 32,724 fans at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Jack Marriott and Luke Bolton’s second-half goals put Wrexham ahead after Christopher Nkunku’s first-half strike, but Lesley Ugochukwu’s 82nd-minute equaliser rescued a draw for new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca. Parkinson is impressed by the progress being made by his side, saying: “I am absolutely delighted. You’ve got to put it into context. We’ve played a billion-pound team, they’ve spent so much money, and two years ago we were playing in the National League. “To go toe-to-toe with Chelsea tonight, you can understand what an effort that was from the lads and we could and should have won the game." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/25/23568e53-5118-4249-9ffa-60d46e8e2554.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/25/f3a06f5f-b022-42b9-a89a-35a065ca7aba.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/25/3f3fdb5b-7e6f-413d-9236-581536beccaa.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/25/2ebebcc9-c29c-4a9c-ad46-5f316fe77974.jpg

The massed ranks of the Welsh club’s men’s and women’s teams, assorted executives and at least one pub landlord toasted his remarks. "I came here with a dream," said McElhenney, of his decision to move to LA from his native east coast of the United States when he was 25. "It was tough. But I aligned myself with the right people who changed my life. "I have to guess you all had dreams like me. I am part of the 4% who make a living and get to do what they dreamed of doing. I guess you are the same. It is why you are here in California, continuing to live your dream. "To all of us dreamers, I say cheers." Dream is a useful word to sum up Wrexham’s presence in Los Angeles this week. Phil Parkinson’s League One hopefuls are training at the world famous UCLA facility, used by Real Madrid last season and Manchester United later this month after Wrexham have moved out. The north Wales outfit play Bournemouth in Santa Barbara on Saturday followed by a meeting with Chelsea - for the second pre-season running - in Santa Clara and finally a trip to Vancouver to play the local Major League Soccer side on 27 July.

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer both appear in Ryan Reynolds' new film..by Ryan Leston, BBC News.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/article33345479.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_paul-mullin-ryan-reynolds-gettyimages-1251400489.jpgWrexham AFC striker Paul Mullin has played a surprise part in Deadpool & Wolverine, the new Marvel comic book film. His masked cameo sees Mullin star as Welshpool – a Welsh version of Ryan Reynolds’ character Deadpool. “You may have noticed one member of the Deadpool Corps was far deadlier than the rest. WELSHPOOL,” said Reynolds on X, external, formerly known as Twitter. Welshpool appears during a sequence which sees hoards of Deadpool variants together on screen. Welshpool’s costume is adorned with prominent Welsh flags across the chest and shoulders. At one point during the film, the camera pauses to highlight the character in an obvious nod to Reynolds’ newfound Welsh connection. Reynolds and fellow Hollywood actor Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham AFC in 2020 and have seen the team promoted to League One. The takeover and the club's subsequent promotions have been documented in the TV series Welcome to Wrexham. But Mullin was not the only Wrexham footballer to appear in Deadpool & Wolverine. Fellow striker Ollie Palmer also made a cameo as a bartender in the background of one scene. Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, was released in the UK on 24th July.

Sunday 18th August 2024 - League One - Venue: Toughsheet Community Stadium - Attendance: 25,957
Bolton Wanderers 0 Wrexham 0Bolton Wanderers and Wrexham remain unbeaten in the new League One season after playing out a goalless draw at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. Arthur Okonkwo produced a fine save to deny Aaron Collins early on before the Wrexham goalkeeper kept out Dion Charles' deflected effort in the second half. Steven Fletcher drilled straight at Nathan Baxter from distance in the final stages, as both clubs kept a first clean sheet of the 2024-25 campaign. The stalemate leaves the pair with four points from their opening two league games after Bolton beat Leyton Orient 2-1 on the opening day - with Phil Parkinson's men winning 3-2 against Wycombe Wanderers. Wrexham return to action against Reading at the Racecourse on Saturday, 24th August (15:00 BST), with Bolton travelling to Charlton Athletic on the same day. Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson told BBC Radio Wales: "They're a good side, it was a good test for us today. "They started so quickly and we didn't quite react to that start but I thought we grew into the game. "It was a hard-fought point for us but it was very important for us to show that we can compete at this level at the top end of the division, and I felt we did that." i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article33495550.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_GettyImages-2166693716.jpgJames McClean played the whole game at Toughsheet Stadium as Wrexham came away with a point

Monday 16th September 2024 - League One - Venue: St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park - Attendance: 27,980
Birmingham City 3 Wrexham 1 (J.Marriott 3)
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/16/22/89750841-13857603-image-a-50_1726521988002.jpg
Match report by Ged Scott, BBC Sport EnglandBirmingham City sent out a stark 'Welcome to St Andrew's' message to not only Wrexham but the whole of League One as they came from behind in dazzling style to win the 'Hollywood derby'. Their £10m deadline day signing Jay Stansfield scored his first two goals since returning to the club and Japanese midfielder Tomoki Iwata netted on his English league debut as expensively-refurbished Blues recovered from the shock of Jack Marriott's early opener for Wrexham. That was more than enough for Blues co-owner Tom Brady to claim the bragging rights over fellow Hollywood A-lister Ryan Reynolds, who was back home in the United States but keeping in touch with events in England's second city via his Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney's satellite phone. In a noisy near-capacity crowd of 27,980 that turned the stadium into a cauldron, England football legends David Beckham and Gary Neville also braved the Birmingham traffic to be part of the Brady entourage in the global superstar's private box. And, just like the big television audience watching at home, they could not fail but to have been impressed by the way Chris Davies' Blues turned potential defeat into such an impressive victory. Promoted Wrexham remain top of League One - but they got a bit of a rude awakening as unbeaten Blues, relegated in May, handed Phil Parkinson's side their first defeat - on a night marred only by home captain Krystian Bielik's late red card.

Wrexham's Paul Mullin denies trying to 'bite' Birmingham player Alex Cochrane..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article33685216.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_GettyImages-2170168454.jpgWrexham striker Paul Mullin has denied suggestions he almost bit the leg of an opponent during Monday's 3-1 defeat against Birmingham City. Replays appeared to show Mullin coming close to biting Alex Cochrane's calf, only to move his mouth away before making contact. Mullin wrote on X, external: "I know what it looks like.. but it didn’t happen. Although you can tell his leg was thinking about attacking my mouth." Cochrane told Sky Sports after the game: "I don't really know to be honest, I was on the floor. I think it was just a bit of handbags, out of nothing, but not too much. Just a load of nonsense, really." Mullin, Wrexham's top scorer for the past three seasons, came off the bench 63 minutes into the much-anticipated League One game at St Andrew's. The incident in the 81st minute preceded scuffles between both sets of players that led to Mullin and the hosts' Krystian Bielik being among those booked. Bielik was then dismissed after collecting a second yellow card five minutes later for a challenge on Wrexham's Andy Cannon. Birmingham manager Chris Davies said he had missed the initial altercation. "I had my back turned to the melee because there was all that nonsense going on," he said. Wrexham captain James McClean was also shown a yellow card after his part in the clashes between players. He was later substituted and appeared to catch an object thrown from the stand as he walked around the perimeter of the pitch. Birmingham came from behind to win the fixture and end Wrexham's unbeaten start to the season, with the hosts moving into second behind Phil Parkinson's side on goal difference.

Report by BBC sportStevenage stretched their unbeaten run to three games with a 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Wrexham in League One. Louis Thompson drilled beyond Arthur Okonkwo from 25 yards out after just 10 minutes to earn Alex Revell's side victory in the first EFL meeting of these two clubs. Despite defeat, their second in the league this season, Phil Parkinson's side remain second, but fall five points adrift of leaders Birmingham City. Stevenage - who have kept three clean sheets in succession - rise to ninth following their fourth league triumph of the campaign. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson: “I thought in the first 10 minutes we started brightly and the goal knocked us too much. We never got going in the first half after the goal, apart from two or three moments where we got the ball into Fletch (Steven Fletcher) and mounted an attack. “They hurried us out of possession and we weren’t quick enough to make angles or to react to their intensity after the goal. “We showed more in the second half. We got into a lot of good positions but the ball wouldn’t fall for us in and around the box. “We gave everything we have got in terms of effort but we just couldn’t produce that moment. I think if we’d got one we would have gone on to win the game.”

INTERVIEW: Dan Scarr after the Stevenage defeat..by Will Pritchardimages.gc.wrexhamafcservices.co.uk/fit-in/2400x2400/8fbf5b20-80a0-11ef-8822-ef971ef4a8fe.jpgDan Scarr spoke to the press, following Wrexham AFC's 1-0 defeat at the Lamex Stadium to Stevenage. The defender, who was selected in the Starting XI, also made his league debut for the Red Dragons tonight, having joined the Club this summer from Plymouth Argyle. Reflecting on his league debut, Scarr said: "I thought I played alright. It is frustrating that as a team we possibly slipped below our own standards in the first half and that might've cost us the game. Overall, I'm pleased to get through it." Wrexham conceded the only goal of the game after just ten minutes, and despite a much improved second half performance, it wasn't to be for Phil Parkinson's side. *I think in the first half, we were a couple of yards off the pace and once they scored, we probably were a bit deflated," Dan admitted. "There are good teams in this division, and you have to be at it, but I thought we had a good reaction in the second half and asked them lots of questions. "It just wasn't to be our day in the second half - they are an organised side, so we have to give them credit." Despite the disappointment, Wrexham still find themselves second in the Sky Bet League One table - but Scarr couldn't fault their efforts, even in defeat. The 29-year-old explained: "The lads have given 110% effort, knocked on the door and we couldn't quite get it over, but that's football for you." With the Red Dragons back at home on Sunday, continuing a busy period in the fixture schedule, Scarr and his teammates are determined to get a positive result at the STōK Cae Ras. He concluded: "It was just one of those days. We've done well this season, so we'll pick ourselves up on Saturday and try to put it right.”

INTERNATIONAL NEWS: Jacob Mendy called up to The Gambia squad..by Colin Henrysimages.gc.wrexhamafcservices.co.uk/fit-in/2400x2400/d3913080-8235-11ef-8cc6-45a94b0638b8.pngWrexham AFC wing-back Jacob Mendy has been called up to The Gambia’s squad for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying double-header against Madagascar. Mendy, who has won three international caps and played at the last Africa Cup of Nations in the Cote d’Ivoire, returns to the national squad for the first time since his comeback from injury. The Gambia face Madagascar twice during the international break, with both matches taking place in Morocco. The first game is on Friday October 11 in Casablanca and kicks off at 3pm local time (2pm BST), before the two teams meet again on Monday October 14 in El Jadida for another 3pm kick-off. Both teams are looking for their first wins of the AFCON qualification stage, after both drew with Comoros and lost to group favourites Tunisia last month. Two teams will qualify for the final tournament from Group A. All at the Football Club would like to wish Jacob and his team-mates the best of luck.

Saturday 5th October 2024 - League One
Wrexham 4 (McClean 8, 67, Marriott 38, Lee 56) Northampton Town 1
Match report by BBC Sport
Wrexham maintained this season's 100% winning home record in League One as they cruised to a 4-1 victory over Northampton Town.
Phil Parkinson's side flew out of the traps at the Stok Racecourse, with James McClean heading Ryan Barnett's cross beyond Lee Burge in the eighth minute.
Cameron McGeehan latched on to Tom Eaves' flick on from a corner to level for Northampton from close range on 27 minutes.
Wrexham restored their lead seven minutes before half-time, with McClean teeing up Jack Marriott who lashed home his fifth goal of the campaign after a teasing Barnett cross.
Elliot Lee headed another Barnett cross beyond Burge in the second-half before McClean's left-footed volley from Barnett's latest impressive delivery capped off a convincing triumph for the Red Dragons.
Victory ensures Wrexham - who move within two points of leaders Birmingham City - remain as the only side in the third tier to have won all (five) of their home league matches this season.
Defeat means the Cobblers - who drop to 20th - have lost three league fixtures in a row for the first time since September 2023.
Wrexham assistant boss Steve Parkin said:
"Any win is pleasing, but I think the manner in which it was achieved was very rewarding for us all.
"We limited a good side, Northampton, and to come out 4-1 on top is very pleasing.
"The key thing for us is to try and produce that quality in the final third, and they did it very well today."

Saturday 19th October 2024 - League One
Rotherham United 0 Wrexham 1 (Mullin 1)
Match report by BBC Sport
Paul Mullin's goal 16 seconds into his return to the starting lineup was enough to see Wrexham beat Rotherham at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.
Mullin replaced injured Jack Marriott to make only his second league start of the campaign following back surgery in the summer.
He volleyed home Ryan Bennett's cross for his first league goal of the season to clinch just a second away win in League One.
The win was tempered by confirmation that Marriott suffered a fractured leg in training and will undergo surgery on Monday.
Here, Wrexham had to defend well in the second half to keep out an in-form Rotherham side who had lost just one of their previous nine games.
But, like Wrexham, they were also without their top scorer in Jonson Clarke-Harris and drew a blank.
Joe Rafferty volleyed wide and then set up captain Hakeem Odoffin whose effort was comfortably saved by Arthur Okonkwo.
But Wrexham's goalkeeper was at full stretch to keep out Joe Powell's deflected free-kick.
Mullin was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Millers goalkeeper Cameron Dawson on the stroke of half-time.
The pair also shared plenty of exchanges after the break when Dawson twice denied the Dragons' striker, either sides of saves from Tom O'Connor's free kick and Dan Scarr's effort.
Rotherham also had chances, but Sam Nombe should have done better after Wrexham failed to clear a corner before Cohen Bramall's free-kick went close.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said: "It's a great result for us at a tough place to come.
"Getting the early goal was terrific for us and I'm delighted for [Mullin] who produced a brilliant finish as he has done time and again for us.
"But it was also the all-round discipline, fighting spirit and quality when we needed it was great today. We were against a team who were in the Championship last season but it was a controlled performance both with and without the ball."
