Starc suffers shoulder injuryTo complete a nightmare day for Australia, pace bowler Mitchell Starc picked up a hamstring injury and then hurt his shoulder diving in the field. Starc left the field before close of play, though the noises from the Australia camp this morning suggest he will be able to bowl today. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/21/878836b7-5140-4766-9911-a5e4d80f61ce.jpgCummins and Starc
Time for a look at the reaction from the Aussie media, who have given a grim assessment of Australia's chances after yesterday.
'Cummins clueless as England run rampant' Peter Lalor in the Australian did not hold back in his assessment of Australia's performance.Pat Cummins appeared to lose the plot and Australia any chance of winning this Test after England taught them a brutal lesson on the second day at Old Trafford. This was as messy as it gets. Everything that could go wrong did. Catches were dropped. Over throws conceded. Players injured. Reputations disrespected.Bowlers got frustrated and England just got on with it. Everything Australia got wrong, England got right. And every break appeared to go the home side’s way, as it so often does when you make the running.# Rarely has an Australian side looked so clueless, rarely the captain looked so rattled. There’s weather predicted for the third morning and the last two days, but the way England are moving it won’t take much clear air to equal the series 2-2. 'Australia may regret poking the Bair' Robert Craddock in the Herald Sun says the fallout from Australia's win at Lord's, featuring that controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow, is weighin the team down. Was poking the Bairstow really worth the hassle? The debate over the spirit verses the laws of cricket became so intense and self-righteous following Jonny Bairstow’s stumping at Lord’s that everyone forgot to mention that the decision in itself would eventually mean nothing compared to the emotionally sapping fallout which would follow it. Australia have just had nine days off yet they looked like a tired team on day one and two at Old Trafford and Pat Cummins’ confused state embodied that of his team. Michael Vaughan mentioned on radio that perhaps the Bairstow decision, when he was stumped not attempting a run at Lord’s, may have taken more out of Cummins than he realised. The fallout has been intense and series shaping. English skipper Ben Stokes batted like a firecracker in the immediate aftermath of the controversial call, English crowds came alive and have stayed that way ever since, and Australia have had to face a firestorm which was simply inevitable.

Australia continuing to put him as an opener despite him clearly being well past his prime will be a big reason for their defeat if (when) they do end up losing the Ashes Adam in Gloucester: YJB performs best when his place is being questioned. From now on, reports are only to mention how useless he is and he will get fired up to prove everyone wrong. Matt, London: I do hope the ground staff are busily arranging for every Super Sopper & tarpaulin outfield cover from each county ground around the country to made available to use at Old Trafford over the weekend… Kevin, Peterborough: Test match cricket is boring. Al: Raining in Trafford Park. Expect it soon. Earlier Various Posts
Dan, London: This is all psychology from Stokes in terms of waiting to declare. The Aussies look so worn down and know they have a very difficult task ahead. Ollie, Hudds: I hope those saying Bairstow should be dropped for this Test have got their humble pie out of the freezer. GT, Hants: The more runs England get, the more aggressive their field can be. 5 slips, fly slip, leg slip, silly point, short leg. Chris, Dorking: Thing is, this isn't really Bazball as we know it. It's sensible aggressive cricket. No silly declarations and no silly shots. Bazball is evolving before our eyes. Jonners, Bury St Edmunds: Stokes is waiting for Bairstow to get his century before he declares... Adam, Bolton: Honestly, I have never seen an Australian side look so lost and that's in any format of the game. This Bazball can really hurt teams. I they know they have 10 wickets to protect or it could be an innings defeat. Chris, Harrogate: Bairstow will just go ballistic now while Jimmy holds up an end. Chris in Darlington: Good to see that Australians without any real plan, they are waiting for the declaration ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/21/57b6c63c-cc22-4bf1-96bf-bec85ce6ef11.jpgThis beer snake has just been captured by a steward.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/48E2/production/_130485681_gettyimages-1560994942.jpgEngland's Jonny Bairstow talking to Sky Sports: "We've done everything so far in the game. To get four wickets tonight puts them under pressure. "The approach has been questioned at times in this series but we've stuck to our guns. That is exactly how we've played our cricket under Ben and we are sticking by that. "I've been happy. There has been a couple of interesting dismissals. It is only a couple of games ago that I got a 70-odd. It is what it is. I want to go out and enjoy and entertain. I can leave them to their comments and I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing. "People can say what they want. They are paid to give their opinion. If they don't have an opinion they don't have a job." England's Jonny Bairstow speaking to BBC Sport: "It's been alright hasn't it? We've put ourselves into a position taking four wickets tonight that hopefully, well, we've done everything that we could've done in the game. The weather is the weather. What comes will come and we can control what we have done so far in the game which is score at a rate that puts us in a position that hopefully forces a result. "I think we've played similarly all series to be quite honest. There's obviously been times in which it's worked and in which it hasn't worked as well but I think the way in which we have gone about it, we haven't changed the way the process has been or the intent has been throughout the series. At times it's been criticised, potentially not worked but at the same time we are sticking to our guns."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/578a/live/89317f30-1112-11ee-816c-eb33efffe2a0.pngBen: Very angry and disappointed. Pathetic by England. Ashes are on the line and we are doing next to nothing. I don't want to hear do gooders tell me "you've got to credit Australia" blah blah blah. Not good enough. Harry, Leeds: The weather tried to stop England winning this, and now England are trying to stop England winning this. We need to actually attack. Feels like the dull and lifeless performances of the first two Tests. Andy, Chester: Although, obviously, would be horrendously disappointed to not win this game on account of the weather, at least we have had a chance and this Aussie pair have batted well so it’s not a total washout. Bowling has looked a little timid, though. Come on England. Chris, London: About to board a flight from London to Boston. Hoping that when I land the game is over and the series set for a barnstormer next week! George, York: England aren’t going to be able to blame the weather for not winning this game in the end. Should have taken at least a couple here. Earlier Posts
Matt, On a train: Marnus Labuschagne just trying to waste time to get an undeserved path to retain ashes. Get on with it. Rev. Chris Haywood, trying to write a sermon: It's a day for Ben Stokes to step up and achieve his own 200 wickets milestone. When the situation necessitates something extraordinary..... Ben is your man. Toby, Dorking: Perhaps an aggressive spell from the captain himself is in order to break this partnership ? Chris, Havant: Time for one of those legendary Broad spells. Keith, Rugby: This is going to end with England needing about 35 in three overs tomorrow evening. It's in the script. Musk Up: Talk of Jimmy Anderson disappointing series isn't telling the whole story. Yes you want the wickets but it's still been a clinic and the vigilance to him has helped wickets elsewhere. A real legend of the game, hope he gets a couple today. Pete, Durham: Am I the only one struggling to see where wickets are going to come from here ? Andy Thomas: This is more frustrating to watch than the sight of covers on the wicket this morning

Close - Australia trail England by 61 runs with 5 wickets remaining
Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's always very special getting a Test hundred. It doesn't happen too often but I'm disappointed I couldn't get us to tea.
"We were so close to having a tremendous day there. For us, this is about saving this Test match and retaining the Ashes."
England batting coach Marcus Trescothick: "We got more play than we expected. It looked like a complete washout so it's a bonus. We're one wicket closer but it's still frustrating.
"It really does depend on the weather. We wanted to get two or three wickets today and we'll take any play we can tomorrow."
BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew: "England were a bit flat. There wasn't much of their usual chatter and the noise from the players you get when you are going for a win."

The Ashes 2023: Australia retain the urn after rain ensures fourth Test ends in draw..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer at Emirates Old Trafford.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/FEE1/production/_130494256_gettyimages-1548637494.jpg Play was called off at 17:25 BST following persistent rain all day at Old TraffordEngland's hopes of an Ashes comeback were heartbreakingly ended by rain that left the fourth Test as a draw and ensured Australia retain the urn. On a hugely frustrating and disappointing fifth day at Old Trafford, persistent bad weather prevented a single ball from being bowled. There was a brief gap that allowed a start to be scheduled for 13:00 BST, only for the rain to return. It meant England did not get a chance to push for the final five wickets they needed to force a win. Australia remained on 214-5 in their second innings, 61 runs behind the home side. At 2-1 up with only one match to play, holders Australia will at least hang on to the Ashes they have possessed since 2017-18 and will now look to complete a first series win in the UK in 22 years. For an England team playing such a thrilling style of cricket under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, the wait for a first Ashes win since 2015 goes on. After losing the first two Tests they were attempting to become the first England team to come from 2-0 down to win an Ashes series, but it was too big an ask. This result also extends an England winless run in Ashes Tests at Old Trafford that dates back to 1981, with the next Ashes Test here not scheduled until 2031. The final Test of the series at The Oval begins on Thursday.

England's Joe Root talking to BBC Sport: "We just need to get some time out there really. I thought it was a good effort yesterday and it was a shame we didn't get more chance to play and get more overs but that is how it goes. If we get an opportunity today we've just got to throw everything at it. We've been exceptional in this game and it would be a shame if we didn't get a chance to push for the win. "The wicket was a big moment. It was a big passage of play. We'd changed the ball and it looked like it was going to swing but then the seamers weren't able to bowl, it was frustrating because it didn't feel like the light deteriorated too much. I thought Moeen was very good. At least we've got one open now and Mitch Marsh has to start again. It gives us a chance to break things open and hopefully get one more wicket before the new ball in nine overs. "The light is out of our control. We can only manage what we can. With how the seamers have bowled it would be great to see them bowl and have the opporunity to show their threat. But the ball is turning at the same time so there is always going to be a chance to take wickets. We'll have to see what happens and be proactive and smart." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/23/467fe3cd-c2e4-4956-bc9b-03b94b9a3ac3.jpgJoe

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/578a/live/89317f30-1112-11ee-816c-eb33efffe2a0.pngTel, Basingstoke: Anyone fancy our chances of regaining down under? Joe, frustrated at Singapore airport: As much as I’m disappointed with the rain, it’s hard to hide from the fact that the mistakes on the first 2 tests have cost us this ashes. The bazball mentality rattled the Aussies, but we weren’t clinical enough to deserve to win this series. Brian, Birmingham: Lots of chat about cricketing idiosyncrasies, so here is another: if we were in the Aussies' position, we'd be loving the rain... Jack, London: We’ve seen the best of cricket this summer, now we are seeing the worst. The notion that there are no weather contingencies for the five-day Test format is farcical. Earlier Posts
Stuart, London: I'm a football fan new to cricket and have just started to enjoy watching but to be honest to find despite all the hype and emotional investment in a series like this that it's ultimately decided on by the weather reminds me why it can never rival other sports for popularity. Can't some clever minds apply themselves to this issue? Greg, Brazil: Re Andy at 15:38. Hear hear. Schedule the match over a week and play until all out or a certain number of overs are bowled (500, maybe?). It's frustrating we don't get to whip the Aussies because of the weather. Phil, Gately: It’s stopped raining here in south Manchester? Any danger of a start time? Andy: There have been a lot of negative comments here about getting the match played to a finish in some way. Whilst I love the old Test cricket format, I do think it is time for a review. The players have done their bit (eg Bazball) to bring in new supporters, especially kids, but not many will understand a rain affected draw in these important circumstances. The authorities must adapt the match rules with the changing times, otherwise I fear for the future of Test cricket. Matt, Devon: Who 'keeps' chocolate? Never last long enough for storage to be a consideration in our house. David, Ashworth: Chocolate always tastes better out of the fridge, including chocolate biscuits. Scott: I have a basic understanding of scoring in cricket, but want to know what would happen if rain cancelled play today? Would it count as a draw? or an England win? Adam, Blackburn: All England need is around three hours of cricket — there's still some hope! Ash Hague: Cricket must look absolutely ridiculous to those looking in. Taking teams off before 90 overs are bowled in good weather, not starting early on the good days when you always lose time later, and of course they must have a full lunch. Morgan Rees: Genuinely surprised we play any cricket in this country. Play can only start at 11:00 when it's light from 7am, need at least 30 minutes of no rain before a pitch inspection, then 45 minutes no rain before play starts. Then one drop and we start all over again. Philip Brooks-Weaver: Why lunch at 12.20, why not start it now and get it out the way? If it’s not raining and the ground is OK, they should be playing. Why wait until 1 if they could be out at 10 to. Ashley Parker: I think if England could get 30 overs of play in like yesterday in today, they would snap your hands off! Aussies batted well yesterday, but England definitely missed a trick with the conditions. Let's see what today brings. Ben Ellis: Feeling very annoyed! They knew this weather was coming and were willing to play up to 19:30 yesterday. They couldn't have done that on the first three days? Maybe start at 10am? Australia will retain the Ashes in a match they've never been in from the first ball, that's wrong! Nick The Unit: Most promising rain radar yet as big band of rain appears to be staying north of Manchester. If the ground was 10 miles south, probably be dry most of the day. Steve, Bristol: IMO they should play until 7.30pm if possible, but better still they should start at 10am and not 11am.

Michael Vaughan Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special:ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/23/e2c8892e-4d69-4a3c-9ca6-89cb184794d0.jpgEngland will go on to win the Ashes if they can force a victory on the final day of the fourth Test on Sunday, says former captain Michael Vaughan. Australia will resume on 214-5, 61 runs behind, so if England take five quick wickets they will level the series before next week's finale at The Oval. However, more poor weather is forecast for day five after rain allowed only 30 overs of play on Saturday. Vaughan told Test Match Special that day five "decides the series". "If England win they'll win at The Oval, whatever team Australia pick," he said. "Australia will be totally gone in terms of energy. "If Australia get away with it - and they'll need some weather to help - then the momentum and energy will be back in Australia's legs." It's gloomy and there's a little bit of mizzle around. There's no covers on the bowler's run-ups on the Brian Statham End currently. It looks a bit grim at the moment. The wind has died down too, it's not as lively as it was an hour or go. Remembering Shane Warne..All I remember was 2002 was the first time I faced Shane Warne. I remember looking at loads of videos of Shane, and that's not a good look when you're about to face a bowler because most of the videos I was watching came back to that great ball. It frightened the life out of me to think I was going to face this legend of a bowler and I was in an England side that a lot of players had been beaten by the Aussies in the early 2000's, so when I asked a few senior players how it was to face Shane, there wasn't a great deal of positivity coming back. After a couple of deliveries I thought he's just a leg-spinner but a very good one. He showed me the googly quite early too. It was his persona and what he brought to bowling, it wasn't just leg spin, it was a genius skill and theatre that he had created. It was a mindset, I was petrified facing him. .................................................................... From the moment we walked into the ground this morning it just didn't feel right. This is no way to retain the Ashes, let's be honest. Australia will take it though. It's similar to 2019 but this feels very different. They were the better team then. England will have to admit that they made mistakes early in the series, particularly in those first two games. But they have played a brand of cricket, particularly this week. I've not seen an England side - I know we've beaten Australia a few times in the last 20 times - but I don't remember a Test match where England have completely dominated and bullied an Australia side. This is the number one team in the world and England have really dismantled them this week and it's been an Australia side that has been playing for the rain. They've been playing for it all week. They picked a side that were just settling, with the deep batting and not playing a spinner. Their mentality and field settings and their negativity this week has been very, very unlike Australia. I always say in a five-match series the best team always win, it's five games and and it's such a long process that you always end up the best team winning. I honestly think England have been the better team in this series. Australia won the first two games and England will look back, particularly at Edgbaston, where they missed so many opportunities in the field and they had the period with the bat at Lord's where they were 180-1 and Australia's spinner Nathan Lyon was walking round the edge of the boundary injured. Pat Cummins turned to the bouncer theory and it worked, England lost all those wickets with silly batting and a mad approach. It's dreadfully disappointing. It is the wrong way to decide a Test match, never mind an Ashes-defining kind of Test match. English cricket has found a method and a way, all the young players that are coming they have found a way. I would've loved for it to be 2-2. Bazball is a over a year old now and this series has been a great series to watch but those first two Test matches were too costly. I'll always say this, I don't think they were game sharp the first Test. Love Bazball and keep going with it but you need to give your bowlers some leg time. The next generation that come through are going to be playing like this and it's not done yet for the England fans. We all agreed that James Anderson deserved to have that sentimental pick this week because he's a legend of the game, but it may have cost England. Josh Tongue is a young quick who has created impact in the one Test I played. I know Australia don't like facing him. In the three games Anderson has played he's had no impact at all. I don't remember him picking up a key wicket. It's not like him at all. England are a team that learn quickly now. The bouncer tactic worked against them at Lord's but it hasn't since because England have changed things. They won't want to be the first England team to lose at home since 2001 so there is an awful lot for them to play for at The Oval next week. I'll be interested to see how Australia play at the Oval and whether or not they try to be positive. If England win at the Oval, they deserve it because they have been the better side. I'm intrigued by selection and mindset at the Oval. If Australia play the way they have in this test then England will absolutely wipe them. Cummins hasn't been quite at his best, whether that's tiredness or England playing him with a bit more of that aggressive nature and putting him under more pressure. The Aussies are singing: "Stand up if you're 2-1 up". I think you can tell from Pat Cummins face that his team have got away with one here.

England captain Ben Stokes at the post-match presentation: "It is a tough one to take. Playing the cricket we managed to play over the first three days and get on the wrong side of the weather it is tough to take but it is all part of the journey. ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p0g0wlh8.jpg"Coming into the game, knowing what we needed to do, played in our hands a little bit. It was another do or die game for us. We couldn't have done too much more. It will be tough to look back on but there is one more game to go and we'll be trying to tie the series and a lot of pride to play for. "The injury to Ollie Pope made us think about the structure of our team and bringing in Chris Woakes helps so much. I'm very pleased with everyone's efforts that has played in this series." On Zak Crawley: "I've been very vocal about anything that has been thrown at me about him. I pick players for what they can do on their best days. He can change games. He takes bowlers on and if he stays at the crease for any length of time he'll take the game on. It was incredible viewing. We knew that an innings like that was never far away. It just shows what faith can do when you see it every day." On Stuart Broad reaching 600 wickets: "It is amazing. Him and Jimmy have just been an amazing example of international sportspeople. He has been a quality performer. It is amazing to have someone like him on your team. You know you're only round the corner from one of those spells he keeps on delivering." Any regrets on the declaration at Edgbaston: "No." England's captain Ben Stokes speaking to BBC Sport: "To play the cricket that we played over the first three days in a game we knew we had to win, it's obviously disappointing to not be able to walk away from here with it being 2-2. "When you look back at the cricket that was played, we did everything we possibly could. "Regardless of what we did we would have ended up in the same situation. I don't think anyone who is going to question the declaration in this game probably doesn't understand the game as well as we do. We've got three hours of cricket in three days, I don't think whatever we did, we would have been able to force a result in this game and that is unfortunately due to the weather. But it is what it is. More from England captain Ben Stokes, talking to BBC Sport, about opener Zak Crawley: "Honestly, one of the great Ashes hundreds as an opening batter. It was just incredible viewing from ball one. Going out there and knowing we had to score at a good rate plays into his favour with the way he plays. He's such a player that can have an impact on the game but when you have him batting out there like he did, you really see why he is the current England opening batter." England's captain Ben Stokes speaking to BBC Sport about the legacy of the England team: "I'm not sure if Australia were surprised that something like that could happen because they have watched us play over the last 18 months and know on our best days we can put any team under the pressure like we did there, but next week is a new game. "We want to leave the Test match summer with a win, the reward for your work isn't what you get, it's what you become. We've become a team that have been so unbelievably well followed and we will live long in the memories of those who have watched us. "As much as I would love to be an Ashes winning captain, I want this team to be a legacy team and regardless of what happens over the next period, this 18 months will go down in history as one of the most exciting and proactive teams to go out there and represent England. "There are some tired bodies and we have a short period until the Oval so we will have to see who is fit then."

Australia captain Pat Cummins at the post-match presentation: "Our preference is to come over here and win the Ashes but it is nice to retain. It's not the best circumstances but the group should be proud of themselves. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/23/6324fba3-7759-4306-8aa2-657c6f4d7984.jpg"It does feel very different to 2019 here. We wanted to win this time. Whatever happened here today it doesn't really change how we look at The Oval next week. "It is only the last year or two I've dreamed of holding the Ashes aloft. We've turned up motivated and it will be a very special moment at the Oval and even more special if we get a win. "It was tough in the field this week. They batted really well. We tried a few different things and it didn't come off. We weren't at our best with some planning and particularly our execution but they played fantastically on the second day. "I feel pretty good actually. I had a little break coming into the series and that's helped. I haven't bowled many balls in between games. I wasn't at my best this week but I'll be ready for next week. "Marnus Labuschagne was fantastic, along with Marshy yesterday. He had A real flow to his game. It was good to show his class." Australia's captain Pat Cummins speaking to BBC Sport: "Obviously not the best circumstances but really good effort, we're going to try to win it but retaining it is nice. "I think 2019 felt a bit different, it was a climax right at the end on day five so this one feels a little bit different. Probably not been our best week so rain helped us out a bit there. "I think England played well. There's been patches throughout this series where they have played really well and the wickets haven't had a lot in them, it's ebbed and flowed the whole series. It's been nice. We'll review a couple things, we weren't our best there particularly that middle session on day two but nothing we haven't seen before. "Every plan you try doesn't necessarily mean it's going to work. Crawley batted really well for his runs. You always come up with different plans but against good wickets and opposition, it's not always going to work. "It's a really similar group to that 2019 group so whatever happens today doesn't really change the way we look at next week. We're here to win and want to try and do something that an Aussie team hasn't done for 20-odd years so that's really exciting. No-one in our group has done that before."

The Ashes: England squad unchanged for final Test at The Oval..England have named an unchanged squad for the fifth and final Ashes Test, which begins at The Oval on Thursday. Australia, who are 2-1 up in the series, retained the Ashes after the fourth Test was drawn at Old Trafford. England will be hoping to draw the series 2-2, while Australia are seeking their first outright series win in England since 2001. If England do make changes to their starting XI, seamers Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue may come into contention. England: Ben Stokes (Durham, captain), Moeen Ali (Warwickshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire). Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Joe Root (Yorkshire). Josh Tongue (Worcestershire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham). ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/A21B/production/_130499414_andersonwoakes.jpgIf selected, the match is likely to be the final home Ashes Test for many England players. The next series in the UK is in 2027, meaning the likes of James Anderson, 40, Stuart Broad, 37, Mark Wood, 33, and Chris Woakes, 34, could be playing against Australia for the final time. Spinner Moeen Ali, 36, is unlikely to play beyond this series after only coming out of Test retirement to cover for the injured Jack Leach. The next Ashes series in Australia is in the winter of 2025-26.
