Phil Tufnell, Former England spinner on BBC Test Match Special. There wasn't a slip, there wasn't a gully. Ollie Pope has just slogged that straight down Steve Smith's neck. I agree with Bazball, but you've got to have a brain as well. Australia were dead and buried. They're all in the huddle congratulating themselves, that's annoyed me. It's all very well entertaining, but this is the Ashes. Now you've got to get the game back manageable again.

Close: England trail Australia by 138 runs with 6 wickets remainingichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/0928/production/_130244320_smith.jpg Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, David Warner, celebrating another English wicketEngland came close to wasting a superb fightback with some brainless batting late on the second day of the second Ashes Test against Australia at Lord's. The home side had done much to reverse the damage of a poor opening day, bowling Australia out for 416 and reaching 188-1 in response. Pope tried to hit Green for six and was caught at deep square leg. Three balls later, Root was caught off the glove playing another pull, only to be reprieved by a no-ball. Duckett, a first Ashes century two runs away, top-edged Josh Hazlewood to fine leg - having already gloved one over slip, skewed another over the keeper and almost hit a chance to deep square leg. Root was caught by a jubilant Steve Smith after he offered another catch off the edge. Harry Brook was dropped by Marnus Labuschagne after playing an explosive pull shot. From 188-1, England were 222-4 and it took a more measured approach from Ben Stokes to take them to 278-4 at the close. Fans Views...Get Involved.piemontemio: Classic case of mixed feelings - after yesterday, I'd have taken Australia 416 all out and us 278/4; after 188/1 with Lyon limping off, I'm disappointed...Always exciting with this England team! Stuart Mitchell: England's day (much needed) with the exception of that brainless hour and three gifted wickets. Mike McMahon: Great day for England that. Batted and bowled themselves right back into this today. Minus a crazy 45 minutes that’s comfortably England’s day. Would have snapped your hand off for this at stumps yesterday! Joseph in Durham: Can we quit with the negativity! If we’d been offered bowling out the Aussies 5-70 and then closing on 278-4 at the start of play after such a poor day yesterday you’d very much have taken it. England have roared back into this game, some commentators making it sound like we’re dead and buried! Ollie: It’s not stupid cricket. You play aggressively there will be on occasion be silly mistakes, but this is as engaging as cricket has ever been in my opinion. Peter: It's no wonder England have underperformed for years. There's such a culture of negativity. We cheer them on when they're scoring smoothly and quickly, but then we mock them for taking risks. It's pretty much impossible to have one without the other. Sometimes it'll go right, sometimes it'll go wrong. Better to try something and fail than to try little and still fail, as has tended to be England's way. Tom: At least next innings England only need 9 wickets. Head and Smith are miles away from Lyon. Genuinely this game and the series has taken a huge turn for England. The best bowler in the world is out. Jonathan Cable: Would definitely had taken being 138 runs behind with only 4 wickets down at the end of today. Right back in it! Andrew Bevan: Despite some cheap wickets given away today, any England fan would have bitten your hand off for this Day 2 close score when Aussies were 300-3!

Get Involved..Your points of view
Stuart Mitchell: I'm all in favour of Bazball but you can play Bazball and be smart about it. England's batting up to that crazy 45 minutes was attacking, positive, entertaining and relatively trouble free. Play like that consistently. Those 45 minutes was gung ho, brainless rubbish.
James Curran: Is anybody else getting sick of this criticism of England's approach. Let's go back to the previous regime eh?! Successful, wasn't it.
Dan Miles: Whisper it but Stokes is dreadfully out of form with the bat. Only three 100s since 2019 and one in the last 18 months. He doesn't look confident.
Ian: Yesterday’s short ball madness was poorly executed by England but I still feel a good bit of BazBall is needed this morning to try and get to parity (or as close as possible) and get Australia in today under these conditions. Batting should be better tomorrow for a memorable winning run chase!
Sam Wise: Mindless batting only lads, mindless batting only
Adam Savoury: Absolutely pathetic cricket.
Chris: Please explain how throwing away two matches and potentially the series with this childish batting is entertaining. Winning matches is entertaining, winning the Ashes is entertaining! Duckett summed it up for me perfectly yesterday. He said if they didn’t attack the short ball, Australia would have won the battle. It’s not the battle that counts, it’s the war that you want to win!
John: I’ve enjoyed Bazball as much as the next person but enough, this obsessive, aggressive, kamikaze batting has to be toned down. So disappointing to see England throwing it away.
James: You can license players to play their natural game but you can't teach common sense. Waiting this out would exhaust the Aussies before the new ball. Instead we've done exactly what they want. They need to have a word with themselves.
Andy: People criticising England's approach, fine. But can they tell us how they think the England of 2019 would be getting on against this Australian attack? If they think they would be winning, I have a Siberian pineapple plantation for sale...
Jack: People aren't frustrated with Bazball as a whole, it's the England teams inability to adapt to the situation. Just don't swing your bat mindlessly at bouncers. Australia will get tired eventually, then play your shots again. I don't understand why Brook didn't learn from yesterday which suggests it wasn't addressed in the dressing room. It doesn't bode well for the rest of the game or series as Australia now know an easy way to skittle England every innings.
Larry: A collapsing English batting line-up and furious commentators - it seems pretty “traditional” to me.
Russell: A lot of what's been said on here this morning, both for and against England's approach, has been very fair. What I find more worrying is the 'beyond reproach' / 'never complain, never explain' mentality of the dressing room. It feels like any sort of criticism of poor strokes and dropped catches is packaged up as 'anti-Bazball' by the team and its advocates. I think we'd all draw comfort from a bit of introspection from Stokes acknowledging that the execution hasn't quite been there, rather than this interminable 'it's how we play' justification
Jacob Hodgkinson: Certainly didn't see myself saying this yesterday, but Nathan Lyon getting injured was the worst possible thing for England. Precipitated the bodyline bowling and ensuing collapse.
Pete Stones: It would be VERY Bazball to lose the first two Tests and win the last three.
Sam Roberts: I wonder if coming from 2-0 to win the series might be the most Bazball thing ever.

The Ashes 2023: England hopes fading after Australia dominate at Lord's..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer at Lord's.England's hopes in the second Test and the Ashes hang by a thread following an awful third day against Australia at Lord's. After captain Ben Stokes was out to the second ball of the morning, England repeated their reckless batting of the second evening to lose their last six wickets for 46 runs. Harry Brook was the latest to fall to the short ball, out for 50, and Jonny Bairstow was guilty of a poor stroke. With the tail unable to provide any resistance to Australia's rampant pace bowlers, England were all out for 325, giving the tourists a first-innings lead of 91. Despite England's bowlers doing everything they could to exploit gloomy, moist conditions, Usman Khawaja built Australia's advantage with a composed unbeaten 58. Khawaja, dropped by James Anderson on 19, added 63 with David Warner and another 60 with Marnus Labuschagne. When rain and bad light arrived just after 17:00 BST, Australia had moved to 130-2, leading by 221. England are not completely out of the contest but will have to be close to perfect from now on. Only one team in Ashes history has ever come from 2-0 down to lift the urn. Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan: "I thought Brook played the short ball well, but the problem is he is always trying to hit the boundary. When he was still and hit the pull shot, he hit one or two quite nicely. "I don't think he's got a real problem with the short ball, he's got a problem with his mindset and the boundaries. If he can change his mindset and think, 'just take the singles'. "When quick bowling is on, it's nice to be at the non-striker's end. When you've got that field Australia set, if you go at two or three and over and stay in, that is better. I am intrigued, not just with Harry, but with all of the batters trying to constantly take it on. "It's silly, it's stupid, and it won't have constant success."

an absolute shambles...... not sure if it's embarrassing but it looks at time some like some rather inept schoolboys out there with this "basball" mentality,,,,, ge the runs/wickets first then "entertain " if you feel the need...Aussies must be piddling themselves at Englands "efforts" ...only rubbish weather will help avoid defeat in this test [for england that is]

Yes, yesterday was a tad embarrassing. It’s almost as if the players have a ready made excuse for wild shots. Their current approach has taken away from the players any individual responsibility, it’s almost as if they’re saying “it was a poor shot but that’s what we do, we’re playing bazball.” Bad balls should be hit of course but not every ball is a bad ball and these sneaky Aussies they will be setting traps for you!
It will have to change soon, playing such rash shots but still beating other teams is very different to an Ashes series. As you say lis, the Aussies must be lapping it up, just waiting for the rash shot to come. Pat Cummins has his fielders in the right position and they know what’s coming. Big two days coming, they will likely have to bat out 4 possibly 5 sessions just to get a draw. They can do it but they will need to have a more cautious approach. I’m not sure they will take that cautious approach, that would almost be an acceptance that they’ve been wrong and they may not want to do that.

I thought 200+ would be enough but that Surrey were capable, with a good start, of getting close to it. Evans and Jacks are nearly as good as Banton and Smeed opening. More reliable I think but less explosive. The Somerset catching (and Surreys) was brilliant and the catch to get rid of Jacks by Koehler-Cadmore was a great catch. Another two overs of Jacks and Surrey could have won. Beating Surrey will have done the confidence a boost and keeps out good run going. Yes, in T20 rash shots are the order of the day. England are playing one day cricket to try and win the Ashes. At the moment it’s not working. ☹️

A very good afternoon I think. But 371 needed in 4 sessions. Without Lyon Australia will be stretched, although not a spinning wicket he would have bowled lots of overs to give their strike force pace attack a rest. Now it will be Head, who England could take advantage of. Whatever, I think it’s better than it looked at 11.00 this morning.

A great shame they lost those two wickets. Australia should win comfortably now. But Bairstow’s dismissal will have angered Stokes. Not against the laws but certainly against the spirit. Stokes just needs to get someone who can stay with him and Australia need to bowl intelligently and not get caught up in the emotion of it all.

Michael Vaughan, Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special.I think there will be many things people focus on. Ben Stokes' remarkable innings. A player that seems to take on the impossible more than anyone I have ever seen. They will be focussing on England's batting in the first innings. Bairstow's wicket will be focussed on. To be bowled out in 76 overs and with Nathan Lyon off the field, that'll be spoken about. There's elements of the professional game that should be focussed on, the batting in the first innings really cost themselves. That Stokes' innings was fuelled by that controversy. He just switched gear after that into overdrive. The courage that the tailenders showed. James Anderson took an absolute peppering. Can they win at least? Of course they can. They need to get to Leeds and I think they can beat this Australia side at Leeds. They just need to forget about the three games they need to win and just focus on winning at Leeds. England have to be realistic about the way they have played that cricket. Glenn McGrath, Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special.Australia were in the box seat at start of play. It was going to take something very, very special from Engand. We had that early partnership then we saw what happened with Bairstow. What that did do was inspired Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad and what followed was incredible. Every day of this Test something incredible has happened and I don't think we have seen a Lord's Test like this one. It will be interesting to see whether this has an impact on the relationship between the teams. They have been very pally, with hugs and jokes, which I'm not a huge fan of off the field. We will see what happens from here. Player of the match, Australia's Steve Smith: "It was a bit of Deja vu, for sure [when Ben Stokes was batting]. "He's an unbelievable player, some of the things he can pull off. The way he went about it, he was pretty much just trying to hit one way. He's a freak. "I dropped him so I was glad we got him in the end. I didn't pick it up initially, it's hard square of the wicket when he's going hard. "The way he plays, chasing totals, he gets it done. It was just an incredible knock." On his own century: "It was important to put a decent total on the board. We were looking to bowl with the overheads and grass on the pitch. It was a great game of cricket in the end." On the short ball taking wickets: "It was two-paced, variable bounce as the ball got older. It wasn't easy and there was not a lot on offer when you pitched it up. It was the one way to get wickets because people on both sides kept playing it. "We played it the same [as England] in the second innings. It wasn't easy with the pace and bounce off the wicket, especially when the ball got older. We wanted to keep the scoreboard ticking and build as many runs as we could." On Nathan Lyon coming out to bat: "They play a dangerous brand and they like chasing. There wasn't much in the surface for the seamers so Nathan showed a lot courage and got some crucial runs." England captain Ben Stokes: "Having experienced something similar before you look back at things like that and have a game plan. I did look back at Headingley but unfortunately is wasn't enough. "I got to the point where Australia changed their plans so I changed mine as well. It is a tough one to take getting so close but being involved in a great game is awesome. We are 2-0 down but we have three games left. We beat Pakistan and New Zealand 3-0 so that is how we have to look at it." On the Jonny Bairstow dismissal: "There's lots of factors. I would ask the umpires whether they had called over. The made a move towards the end of the over. But at then of the day it is out. If the shoe was on the other foot I would have had a think about the whole spirit of the game. But is has happened. It was out. We have to move on." "When you win the toss and bowl you want to restrict a team to below 350. The lads got a bit of criticism but the amount of times it went past the bat was frustrating. The efforts that we put into this week, the spell of bowling short for hours, it cannot be faulted." On England's batting approach in the first innings: "Reckless is an easy word to use. What we have managed to do is give everyone complete clarity about what they want to do. If you want to go in a certain way you have the backing of the dressing room to to that." On Josh Tongue: "He has been brilliant. I didn't know him too well before the game against Ireland but the way he has taken responsibility, he has a mighty fine engine on him, he has been great find for us." On the rest of the series: "2-0 down with three games left. All we are thinking about is 3-2." .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Ahh well, it was very exciting and thrilling while it lasted and i do believe we would have won it had Jonny Bairstow been there for longer with Ben Stokes...

In all sports, the best players rise to the big occasion and Stokes always does. Hats off to him. Harris: The Windsors should do the right thing; abdicate the throne and appoint Benjamin Stokes as King! Benjamin the 1st!! from Harris, Tilford The Windsors should do the right thing; abdicate the throne and appoint Benjamin Stokes as King! Benjamin the 1st!! Tom, Edinburgh: Never been so happy to be stuck in traffic. Meant to be taking the boys swimming. Gripping stuff. Max: Was supposed to be flying to Tokyo at lunchtime today. Unfortunately the flight was cancelled but silver lining means I can watch the cricket. Angela: Stokes is amazing but so is Broad. Ice ice baby. Tom B: Just been told our easyJet flight won't be taking off for another 50 mins. Just this once I'm ok with that! Liam: Ben Stokes, will you be my best man?. Greg Coles: Ben Stokes. Take a bow. GOAT. Craig Barker: Can we knight Ben Stokes at tea? Charlie Cox: Transfixed from a motel room in Washington, US. This man’s ability to entertain is unmatched. Zach Kingsbury: Ben Stokes is the ice man. Bloke is almost single handedly giving England a chance of victory here and looks like he’s having a knock in the local park with the kids. Crazy composure. Joe: Been resisting turning on the cricket all day so I don't jinx Stokes. First full over I see and he's out... I'm sorry England! Caroline: I've not dared move a muscle all afternoon in case it brought bad luck. As soon as husband gets up from his chair we lose Stokes. I can only apologise to England on his behalf. There will be words when he comes back downstairs! Moninder: I listened to Ben Stokes winning the World Cup final lying on the beach in the Dominican Republic. Today I am on the beach in Cuba. I should do this more often! Anon: Stokes' knock was inspirational but so many of the rest of the team have been found wanting on both temperament and talent. Robinson is not a Test player. Arbab, London: The Bairstow wicket was perfectly fine. The keeper didn't hold onto the ball long. It's Test match cricket at the highest level why are you walking forward until you should? Classic England shouting foul when it was within the laws of the game. Stokes has been too class but the rest have been poor. 2-0 Australia. Can smell a whitewash. Rich from Gloucester: In regards to the Bairstow dismissal, anyone who is commenting on the laws of the game is completely missing the point. The debate is not about whether it was out, but the lack of sportsmanship. Surely the Aussies don't need to resort to such cheap tactics. James: Am I the only English person who is annoyed with Bairstow for being stupid, rather than playing the victim? Absolutely nothing wrong with that dismissal at all! Reginald: While it's not a wicket I'd ever like to see taken, it's not the reason we lost this match. The fact it was even close is because of a piece of individual brilliance. We were so reckless in the first innings and that's what actually cost us. Nathan Cavin: I think I need a break from cricket after that test. Absolutely exhausted and gutted from watching that. Wait, the next test starts Thursday?! Ben Ellis: That mad hour on Friday afternoon... We could be 2-0 up. We should be at worst 1-1! Special and (above all) smart cricket required from here! Alex, Bedfordshire: Gutted. Bravely played by Tongue and Anderson, though. The fact England gave away an additional 35 extras across the two innings feels crucial... Nav, St Albans: Have to say - lost of respect for Aussie cricket today. H enry in Colchester: That interview was Cummins' opportunity to win back some credibility/respect and he's doubled down. Cannot wait for Thursday! from Henry in Colchester Sam N: In reply to Cummins, I don't think there is a problem on any other ball of the over it is the fact it's the last ball is the problem. The umpires made it seem as though the over was done in my opinion. D isappointed in Hertfordshire: Just off to the bookies. I wonder what odds they'll give me on 3 'mankads' in Australia's first innings in the third Test? Marc, Aberdeen: Suppose we will have to be on our guard for a Mankad as well now. Well played Australia. Letter of the law. Nice one. Trying not to be too grumpy, London: If Cummins thinks there was nothing untoward or sneaky in Bairstow's dismissal, and that Bairstow had been straying out of his crease too much before balls were technically dead, could he then perhaps explain what actual advantage he felt Bairstow was getting from doing that and why Cummins did not feel it merited a warning or a quiet word in the midst of a fairly finely-poised game? W.H. Harris, in Leeds: "It's like the catch yesterday. That's how I saw it", says Pat Cummins. It's not though, is it, Pat. The catch was an umpire's decision, Duckett was walking. This was cheap decision from an Aussie player. Darren, Oxford.: Can TMS maybe not just publish all the “against” messages? Nasser Hussain just summed it nicely on sky. He would have not have withdrawn it. They were smart. Small margins. It’s lazy from Bairstow and naïve to say that’s the reason we lost. We lost it in the first innings. Barnaby - London: The stumping wasn’t sporting but it was out. Annoyingly what it will do is ensure the media focus on that for our loss vs. player tactical faults. Whilst Stokes was brilliant there are players that need to improve and make better decisions and this will take the spotlight away from that. Harry, Leeds: Those saying we didn't lose it based on the Bairstow dismissal.... I bet we'd have been much closer had he remained in! In fact the way Stokes batted, I reckon Bairstow would have found the 43 we needed. It had everything to do with loosing and the Aussies knew it!
