The Ashes 2023: Jonny Bairstow should have been warned before dismissal..By Jonathan Agnew, BBC cricket correspondent.ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p01jzkvk.jpgI have been coming to Lord's for many years now but have never witnessed anything like the fifth day of the second Ashes Test on Sunday. For an opposition captain to be booed like Australia's Pat Cummins was when he stepped up to the podium after Australia sealed that dramatic and controversial victory was extraordinary. The atmosphere was febrile. Sunday crowds often feel different at Lord's. They have a People's Day feel and the 30,000 inside the ground certainly let their feelings be known. Let's get one thing straight first: technically, Jonny Bairstow's contentious dismissal was out. He wandered out of his ground before the ball was dead and wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw down the stumps. Bairstow may have scratched the crease with his boot, seemingly declaring himself that the ball was dead, but that is not how it works. In the BBC box, I was in the process of a handover to the next commentator. The umpire Ahsan Raza was reaching for bowler Cameron Green's cap. It felt like the end of the over but, technically, it was not. The issue, though, once again, comes back to that difficult thing - the spirit of cricket. It is not a black and white rulebook but the code we all follow the game by. It is a personal thing. ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/480xn/p01c12ht.jpgBairstow had gone on the same wander down the pitch after each of the previous three balls but he was not trying to gain an advantage. He was not setting off for a run or batting out of his crease to negate swing. Others will disagree with me, some of my Test Match Special colleagues do, but that is why I would have liked to have seen Australia give Bairstow a warning before going through with that kind of dismissal. Back in 2008, we had the situation where England ran out New Zealand's Grant Elliott after bowler Ryan Sidebottom had crashed into him and knocked him to the ground in a one-day international. England captain Paul Collingwood should have withdrawn his appeal that day and, like on that occasion, there was time, while the TV umpire was deliberating, when Cummins had the chance to change his mind. When you are in your huddle, you have the chance to think 'I'm not sure about this'. But when I spoke to him afterwards, Cummins was adamant in his position. He said it was "fair" and that just shows how these things are individual decisions. One thing that is certain is the incident fired up Ben Stokes. Stokes is an extraordinary phenomenon. We, and the Australians, have seen it before and, in his 155 which threatened to take England to victory, we witnessed it yet again. England's talisman was at his destructive best which was pleasing to witness, because we have not really seen it in the past 12 months. Stokes' six-hitting was incredible, those three sixes to take him to his century in particular. Because of that knee injury which clearly hampers him, every time we see Stokes I wonder how much longer he will play but we have to appreciate him while we still can. He is one of England's great cricketers and it is clear how much Australia fear him. When reflecting on Stokes match-winning innings at Headingley in 2019, the suggestion from the Australia team was that they should have bowled normally, that they lost their heads that day as England secured a memorable victory. But faced with a similar situation again, Cummins put every fielder on the boundary and that was an interesting insight into how they view Stokes. The Bairstow dismissal and the furore around it will galvanise England. It is not going to do relations between the sides much good and England will have to use that to their advantage if they are going to have any chance of getting back into the series. The Headingley crowd is always hostile and that is only going to go up another notch when the third Test begins on Thursday. England should pick Mark Wood for his express pace, bowl their bouncers and embrace that emotion. This series has been gripping but until its 10th day had been cosy and chummy. We have had Stuart Broad and David Warner chatting like blokes in the pub. That is not going to continue and it only adds to the excitement. England will be fired up and I was encouraged by how they played in their second innings. It is clear they lost this game in the first innings when they lost those quick wickets to Australia's short-ball ploy. That's where the 40 runs that would have won this game should have come from. www.famousbirthdays.com/faces/agnew-jonathan-image.jpgBut England were better in the second effort. Of course, Stokes was a big part of that but opener Ben Duckett also batted beautifully for his 83 and Broad was brave in that 108-run stand with his captain. England will know they can beat Australia. With a few tweaks, some luck here or there, they could easily be 2-0 up in this series. That is not to say Australia are fortunate - they must be given credit too - but, at Edgbaston and again at Lord's, England found themselves in strong positions. They just cannot keep throwing them away and failing to turn them into commanding ones. You cannot argue with history. England have never come from 2-0 down to win the Ashes. But they just have to take each match at a time, starting with Headingley, and take forward the positives of the Lord's final day. Who knows, we could yet see something even more extraordinary. Jonathan Agnew was speaking to BBC Sport's Matthew Henry

The Ashes 2023: Ollie Pope out for rest of summer with shoulder injury..By Matthew Henry, BBC Sport at Headingley.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D66E/production/_130249845_gettyimages-1505576214.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/2A4C/production/_130282801_gettyimages-1505570701-1.jpgEngland batter Ollie Pope has been ruled out of the rest of the Ashes series with a dislocated shoulder. England's vice-captain was injured diving in the field during the second Test at Lord's, which Australia won to take a 2-0 series lead. Scans on Monday showed Pope, 25, would require surgery. Essex batter Dan Lawrence, 25, is the most likely replacement for the third Test, which starts at Headingley on Thursday. Lawrence is the only spare batter in England's squad. England have said they will not call up a replacement for the Leeds Test, ruling out a possible recall for Surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes. Lawrence averages 29 from 11 Tests but has not played since the tour to the West Indies in March 2022, before captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took charge. ................................................................................................................................................................... The Ashes 2023: Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon ruled out of Ashes with calf injury..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9798/production/_127880883_gettyimages-1446590382.jpgAustralia off-spinner Nathan Lyon will miss the rest of the Ashes series against England with the calf injury he sustained in the second Test at Lord's. Lyon, who has 496 Test wickets, suffered the issue on day two of the encounter. The 35-year-old's absence was confirmed as Australia left him out of their squad for the remaining three Tests because of a "significant calf tear". Lyon took eight wickets in Australia's victory in the first Test at Edgbaston. He dismissed opener Zak Crawley at Lord's to take his 496th Test wicket when he was playing his 100th consecutive Test. He then sustained his injury on day two of the second Test when he pulled up as he ran to field a ball. Lyon hobbled out to bat for his side on day four and scored four runs as he added 15 with Mitchell Starc. "I've been extremely lucky with injuries. I've been around since August 2011 and we've had 126 Test matches and I've played 122 of them," said Lyon, who is unsure if he will stay in England for the rest of the Ashes series or return home for rehabilitation. "This is just a little speed bump in the road. This isn't career-defining. I am hungrier than ever to get back out there."

The Ashes 2023: Jonny Bairstow will have bit between his teeth at Headingley, says Joe Root..By Matthew Henry, BBC Sport at Headingley.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/E900/production/_130284695_gettyimages-1406908217.jpgEngland batter Jonny Bairstow will have the "bit between his teeth" when the third Ashes Test begins on Thursday. The continuing fallout from Bairstow's controversial dismissal on the fifth day of the second Test at Lord's has overshadowed Australia's victory. Some of Bairstow's best performances in an England shirt have come when he has been fired up, or arrived at a match with a point to prove. "Jonny thrives off things like this," fellow Yorkshireman Joe Root said. "I'm sure he will want to entertain the local crowd. I think it is set up nicely for him, but you have still got to go and do it." Bairstow was stumped when he left his ground believing the ball to be dead, and the over to have concluded, as wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw at the stumps. Root reiterated the view that England would have withdrawn the appeal. The fallout has included comment from both countries' prime ministers. "I don't think he took it great," Root said. I don't think anyone would they? "He felt a bit hard done by. I don't think anyone will be leaving their crease [this week]." Bairstow responded to criticism during England's 2019 World Cup win by hitting centuries against India and New Zealand, roared with emotion and hit out at being "castigated" for getting injured after a ton in Sri Lanka in 2018 and last year he exploded into life after a sledge from Virat Kohli to hit a ton against India. "It brought the best out of him," Root said. "Let's hope it happens again. "You can bet your bottom dollar he will have the bit between his teeth." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/5/fd606c49-d467-483a-a0b4-1f8f2a86b2f0.png

The Ashes 2023: Steve Smith on 100th cap, batting and being booed..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11D26/production/_130289927_stevesmith.jpg Steve Smith will become the 15th Australian man to reach 100 Testsichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/311E/production/_128347521_stevesmith.jpgSteve Smith has previously played county cricket with WorcestershireWhen the Lord's crowd turned on Australia on Sunday, it was nothing new to Steve Smith. "I'm used to it when I go around this country," he tells BBC Sport. "I said to the boys at one stage 'welcome to my life'." Smith plays his 100th Test at Headingley this week, but was probably not expecting any sort of hospitality in Leeds, even before the Jonny Bairstow stumping controversy. The story of an 18-year-old Smith playing club cricket for Sevenoaks Vine in 2007 is well told. Second XI appearances for Kent and Surrey could have led to a career in county cricket - and possibly playing for England - through his English mother. "Mum has still got an English accent," says Smith. "The roots are there, but my allegiance is to Australia. "For me it was always Australia. That was my home and where I wanted to play. Fortunately I got offered a rookie contract at New South Wales. So many of my heroes were playing there at the time, so it wasn't a difficult decision." Three years after his stint with Sevenoaks, Smith was playing Test cricket, not as the maddening, immovable fidget batter he has become, but the latest attempt by Australia to fill the impossible hole left by Shane Warne. Against Pakistan in 2010, Smith batted at eight and bowled 21 overs of his leg-spin, picking up three wickets. By his reckoning, he was one of the 14 spinners Australia tried between the great Warne and current number one Nathan Lyon. "I really only bowled to be involved in the game as much as I could be," he explains. "I got lucky with the opportunity to play a few Tests. "Batting was what I always wanted to do." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/160E0/production/_130263309_stevesmith.jpgEven Smith cannot explain the movements Smith makes. "I look back at the footage and say 'what was I doing in that moment?" he says. "It's good I don't know what I'm doing when I'm out there. I'm just letting my natural instincts take over. "Usually when I'm playing all those flamboyant leaves and things like that I'm usually in a pretty good place mentally." He is a batting obsessive, the subject of legendary tales of marathon net sessions or shadow batting in front of the mirror in full kit. "I love all the aspects of batting. I love practising, going in the nets and finding new ways to play," says Smith. "When you receive new bats it's like Christmas morning every time. I've got a couple coming this week so I'm pretty excited for that." Smith's 3,210 runs is the fourth-most by any batter in Ashes Tests. There's a reasonable chance that Smith will end behind only The Don on that list too. "Being spoken about in the same context as him is flattering," he says. "Ashes cricket has always been the one I try to get up for. It's the biggest challenge. "Getting in those battles, being out there trying to be successful for the team is something I love. I've had a bit of success. Hopefully there's a little bit more to come." Smith's Ashes career might only include three more Tests in the UK. He is 34 now and will be 38 when Australia are next due here. "I doubt it," says Smith when asked if he will be on that tour. "Never say never, but I severely doubt it." Boo him if you must. See him bat while you can.

The Ashes 2023: England pick Mark Wood, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali for third Test..By Matthew Henry, BBC Sport at Headingley.

England have made three changes for the third Ashes Test, bringing in Mark Wood, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali. Ollie Pope has been ruled out of the series but England have opted against replacing him with Dan Lawrence, the spare batter in their squad. Instead, Harry Brook moves up to number three with all-rounders Woakes and Moeen added to bolster the lower order. Wood joins Woakes, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson in the pace attack with Josh Tongue and James Anderson rested. The Test begins at Headingley on Thursday with England needing to win to prevent Australia retaining the Ashes. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/AE05/production/_130294544_bbc-sport-index-imagery-3-split-images-gradient-8db1e875-1627-4242-bba1-aef83e7250aa.pngChris Woakes.....................Mark Wood .......................and Moeen AliEngland team: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Harry Brook, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson.

Bairstow is a liability as the wicketkeeper. He's put down two easy catches that I've seen so far, and the game is only 24 overs old.

In that post-tea spell Wood took four wickets for five runs in 16 balls. He's been superb. Where would England be if they had him available throughout the series ? There are 27 overs left in the day. Literally anything could happen between now and 6.30pm. England could score 150-plus or they could be 100-7. Either way, stick with us. It's bound to be very entertaining. Right, England's innings is about to start. Mitchell Starc has the ball in hand. Zak Crawley is facing up.

The Ashes 2023: Moeen Ali says England have a 'good chance' of winning third Test..ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/AF7A/production/_130322944_gettyimages-1522605970.jpgMoeen Ali says England are in a "winnable position" after his two wickets restricted Australia on day two of the third Ashes Test at Headingley. Moeen removed Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith to move to 200 Test wickets as the tourists reached 116-4 at close, leading by 142. England were earlier bowled out for 237 after another heroic innings from captain Ben Stokes, who hit 80 to rescue his side from 142-7. "We have a good chance," said Moeen. Speaking to Test Match Special, he added. "It's pleasing the day actually ended up quite nicely and we're still in a winnable position." Moeen is just the third England spinner to take 200 Test wickets, after Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann. "I'm pleased to reach 200," he said. "Those two wickets were gifted in a way but generally I bowled quite well. "I didn't think I was going to get any wickets on this, first innings I was bowling and it wasn't spinning much, but today was nice because I tried to be aggressive and attacking." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/12A90/production/_130323467_gettyimages-1522602109.jpgHeadingley's recent fourth-innings history2023: Leicestershire chase 389 to beat Yorkshire in County Championship 2023: Yorkshire make 412-9, chasing 492, against Glamorgan to save a draw 2022: England chase 296 for the loss of three wickets to beat New Zealand 2019: Ben Stokes' 135 not out takes England to one-wicket victory over Australia in pursuit of 359 2017: West Indies chase 322 for the loss of five wickets to beat England 2001: Mark Butcher's 173 not out leads England home in chase of 315 against Australia BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew on Test Match Special: "A fascinating game of cricket, all the players out there have given absolutely everything and it has been a tremendous battle. Playing under Stokes and Brendon - even when bowling I don't feel under pressure. The environment is my sort of environment for sure." Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "It's fantastic to watch, you just don't know which way it is going to sway. "Ben Stokes is just remarkable - whilst there was carnage around him he just had clarity." Australia captain Pat Cummins: "I'm sure the fans are loving it but I wouldn't mind a stress-free day or two. It's all set up for another wonderful match."

In reply, despite the loss of David Warner for one, the opener again caught off Stuart Broad, Australia eased to 68-1 and a lead of 94 as they threatened to take a firm grip on an enthralling Test. The Ashes 2023: Headingley to stage another England-Australia nail-biter..By Matthew Henry, BBC Sport at Headingley.Again, with conditions handed to them on a platter after the rain relented, England looked to have taken a stranglehold on the third day with four quick wickets - each a cannonball into the bows of the Australian ship trying to position itself out of England's reach. But Travis Head, at the ground he once spent a summer calling home, did his best Ben Stokes impression to ensure none of us will sleep comfortably. Of course it was Stuart Broad - it's always Broad in the Ashes - who pumped his legs to end Head's onslaught, but England's victory surge had earlier been set up by the man it seemed had been forgotten. After 15 months out of the side, with serious personal doubts over whether his chance would ever come again, England have called on Chris Woakes in their hour of need in Leeds, with the urn on the line. And throughout this Test Woakes has proven that the hair may be greyer but - in England at least - he is still as dependable as ever. Woakes missed the entirety of England's first Bazball summer, hobbling around and watching on TV after being flogged more than any other England seamer, from Brisbane to Barbados, during the dark winter of 2021-22. Even before the first Test of this summer against Ireland, Woakes was put up to speak to the media only to be dropped. But when finally given his chance again, after three wickets in the first innings, he removed Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and, crucially, Mitchell Marsh in the second - each celebrated with his typical polite enthusiasm. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/99E0/production/_130329393_gettyimages-1525892034-1.jpg"I haven't played in front of a crowd in England for a couple of years, it brings out that emotion in you when you hear that roar," he said afterwards. "It's easy to forget how good it is when you haven't played for a while." Before this Test Woakes pulled Stokes to one side, wanting to ask if he had any advice in his first game under the all-rounder's captaincy. "Nah, you just do you," Stokes told him. "If I change the field don't worry about it because I just like doing rogue things." Thankfully for England, Woakes did just that. His dismissal of Carey was his 100th in England and, while his struggles overseas have been well-documented, here he is among the best. Of the 16 others to have taken 100 men's Test wickets in this country, only the late great Shane Warne has a better average. Woakes' injuries last summer meant he missed England's chases of 378 against India and 277, 299 and 296 against New Zealand - the latter, again, on this ground. Those stunning pursuits have warped the mind, somehow making this latest target of 251, of which 27 runs have already been knocked off without loss, look strangely manageable. The history of this series suggests the reality will be anything but. England must do it all in the knowledge that defeat would end their Ashes hopes and hand Australia their first victory in England since 2001. "It's more excitement than nerves," Woakes said. "Naturally in a run chase there's always nerves around. But they are good nerves - the thought of winning the Test, chasing down a score, and keeping yourself in the series." Of course England have their 2019 win here to look back on, a game Woakes was a part of. That day Stokes ended 135 not out and his unlikely batting partner at number 11, Jack Leach, was unbeaten on one. "If I'm batting number 11, I'll get one not out and let Stokesy do the rest," Woakes joked when asked if he was ready for similar. If there is a repeat by 4pm on Sunday, those in the stands may have to be carried home. In the meantime, strap yourself in for another Ashes nail-biter. ...................................................................................................................................... Former England captain Michael Vaughan on Test Match Special: "England have had a perfect day. "I think England will get there but it will be dramatic. We're in for a few hairy moments." Former Australia bowler Glenn McGrath: "The scoreboard will not bother England. They will play without fear. Australia have to remain patient, there's enough variable bounce in this pitch and they cannot go searching for wickets because they will be punished..."There are a few more twists and turns in this match yet." England bowler Chris Woakes: "I'd like to think we're in a really good position, obviously we've still got another 220 runs to chase to win this Test match, but if we were given this opportunity at the end of the first innings, we would've taken it."

ENGLAND WIN BY THREE WICKETS..Chris Woakes you absolute beauty!Drilled through the covers and the Ashes are alive! What a day, What a game, What a series. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/9/7e38ba34-ce92-43ee-9f88-fc96c9c58e4a.jpgMark Wood and Chris Woakes
ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/13C1B/production/_130332908_gettyimages-1528185338.jpgMark WoodEngland captain Ben Stokes has been speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "Not good for the old age stuff is it?! "It's completely different when it's out of your control. I just sat up there thinking about what would I be doing if I was out there. Brooky controlled the game very, very well. I'm just tired, it's been draining." On Harry Brook: "Under the pressure and circumstance of the series, that contribution got us over the line. There were some smaller ones, Woakesy, Woody going down in that blaze of glory. "But Brooky has got a very good head on his shoulders, he's a very talented boy, we've let him propel himself." On Moeen Ali batting three: "Mo came up to Baz and said, let me have a go at three. Free hit is not the right word, but we thought he could have more influence at three then eight. "It didn't work, but I loved that Mo took that responsibility." On comparisons to 2019: "Headingley day four, yet again, it's some place to play cricket. I don't know what it is, it seems to bring out great games." Can England win the Ashes?: "Yep. No hesitation." England's win makes the series 2-1 to Australia with two Tests to play, setting up a grandstand finale that could yet match the iconic contest in 2005. There is a nine-day break before the fourth Test at Old Trafford starts on Wednesday, 19th July.

The Ashes 2023: England have to capitalise on momentum of Headingley win..By Jonathan Agnew, BBC cricket correspondent.ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/480xn/p01c12ht.jpgAggersIf Australia did not already know they had a battle on their hands for the Ashes, they do now. Standing in the middle after England secured their three-wicket victory at Headingley, you could not help but think back to four years ago on the same ground. As I did that day, I interviewed Ben Stokes in the aftermath. We were in almost the same spot on the outfield, and it was eerie how similar it was - the crowd, the jubilant atmosphere, and even the perfect weather. Last time it was Stokes hitting the crucial knock, but this time it was Harry Brook with the match-winning innings. Brook played superbly for his 75. He is remarkable for his age - still just 24, and playing his 10th Test. He seems to be able to play with such clarity. On his home ground and back at number five in the batting order, where he is more suited, he was Stokes-like in that the situation did not seem to impact him. He just sees the ball and hits it. It is uncomplicated and paid off perfectly. Throughout the third Test, England batted how a lot of us have suggested they should. It was entirely their own fault they were, but England should not have been 2-0 down going into this match, after what we saw in Australia's thrilling two-wicket win at Edgbaston and the dramatic encounter at Lord's. The scoreline now is much more reflective of the play we have seen. England played positively but when the field was set back they were sensible, just knocking the singles into open spaces. We saw it at the start of the decisive fourth day when Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley just pushed and ran - the result being they took another 15 off the target without having to do anything too drastic. That was smart cricket and it does now feel that the momentum has swung towards England. It started when Mark Wood changed the complexion of the hosts' attack in the first innings at Leeds, when he took 5-34 and knocked over Australia's lower order. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B2BA/production/_129245754_markwood.jpgMark WoodI love watching real fast bowling, and that was it at its very best. Wood was outstanding. The fact he and Chris Woakes, who also bowled very nicely for his six wickets, were able to perform right away in their first match of the series with no cricket behind them, is testament to their training and preparation. What England now have to do is ensure they do not squander this momentum, as they did in 2019 when, after Stokes inspired them to victory, they lost the next Test in Manchester. To do that they still have to cut out the missed chances and, of course, talk will continue around the place of wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, given someone of the quality of Ben Foakes is waiting in the wings. By my Test Match Special colleague Andy Zaltzman's calculations, Bairstow has missed eight chances in the series, but for me it was just as worrying that he left the catch off Mitchell Starc for Brook on the third evening. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11DD8/production/_129467137_gettyimages-1241503855.jpgJonny BairstowThat was the wicketkeeper's catch and was a sign of someone low on confidence. Bairstow was lucky Brook did so well, running and diving from short leg. England, though, value Bairstow's batting highly. He did score an important 78 in the first innings of the first Test, let's not forget. He is coming back from a serious leg injury and with each of these games is only going to get fitter, which leaves me thinking England will stick with him. They do, however, have a decision to make about the number three spot. I do not want to see Brook go back up there - it is just not his position. If the pitch at Old Trafford is a slower one then Moeen Ali could well continue, having been promoted for the second innings in Leeds, or another option is Stokes. England's captain has the technique to do it and batting down the order he almost always has to hit sixes to score a run, because Australia are just putting the field back to him. He would have the chance to play a more conventional innings, which we know he can do, but obviously the downside is he would likely come to the crease when the ball is new and Australia could knock him over. That's why I would try to persuade Joe Root to go back to number three. I know he does not like it as much as his current place at four, but it is only one position and we have not had this conversation since he gave up the captaincy. Root wouldn't be as drained as he would have been back in the days of batting at number three after captaining in the field all day. As for the bowling, my hunch is James Anderson will come back, in place of Ollie Robinson, to bowl at the end which carries his name. ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p0fw3ccr.jpgJames AndersonBy his own admission, Anderson has not been at his best but he was out there before day four training to try to get himself right. Whoever England pick, it promises to be a fascinating Test in Manchester. There may be nine days off but it is going to be hard not to get swept up by the excitement that will build over the next week. Had England lost on Sunday, it would have been such a disappointment because the series would have been over. It has already had everything that makes the Ashes so special - brilliant cricket, bad cricket, close finishes and a good row - and is capturing the imagination of so many people, which is what it is all about. It could now be a series we continue to talk about for a very long time. Jonathan Agnew was talking to BBC Sport's Matthew Henry.
