That was a good watch yesterday. A few nerves but the batsmen were playing normal cricket. The Aussies by going for bouncers and leg side bowling allowed England to swing with some kind of freedom. England were caught too often down the leg side for my liking but I don’t think I ever felt we wouldn’t win. Not sure why Murphy was playing for the Aussies, was never bowled because he couldn’t keep the score down. Glad to see Harry Brook batting at 5, as a youngster he should bat where he feels most comfortable, it was good to see Moeen Ali take responsibility and bat 3 even if he wasn’t the best. Series opened up now and could be any score, 1-4, 2-3, or even 3-2 to us. Whatever it’s great entertainment.

The way England play almost guarantees a result within five days, one way or the other.

The Ashes: England name unchanged squad for fourth Test at Old Trafford..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BEF4/production/_130348884_gettyimages-1525544811.jpgEngland have named an unchanged 14-player squad for the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford. It means there is no place for Surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, with Jonny Bairstow set to retain the gloves. Ollie Pope is absent after suffering a shoulder injury during the second Test at Lord's that has ruled him out for the rest of the summer. England won the third Test by three wickets to leave the series 2-1 to Australia with two Tests to play. The fourth Test starts on Wednesday, 19th July. Seam bowler James Anderson was rested for the third Test but could be recalled for the match at his home ground. The 40-year-old could come in for Ollie Robinson, who suffered a back spasm during Australia's first innings and did not bowl for the rest of the match. Josh Tongue is also pushing for a recall after impressing during the second Test at Lord's, though Mark Wood and Chris Woakes both made match-winning contributions at Headingley on their first Test appearances of the summer, Wood was named player-of-the-match after taking seven wickets and is confident he will be fit for the remainder for the series, while Woakes took six wickets and scored a crucial unbeaten 32 in England's second innings to see them over the line. England squad:- Ben Stokes (Durham, captain), Moeen Ali (Warwickshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire) Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Dan Lawrence (Essex),Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Josh Tongue (Worcestershire) Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).

beggars belief that Bairstow retains his place... such an abysmal return to the side since injury, the guy is seemingly just not fit enough yet,,,, Foakes ought to have beed re called imo

The Ashes: James Anderson replaces Ollie Robinson for England in fourth Test..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer at Emirates Old Trafford.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BFCC/production/_130400194_jimmy2.jpg James Anderson will be playing in his 182nd TestEngland have recalled James Anderson in place of Ollie Robinson for the must-win fourth Ashes Test against Australia at Old Trafford. Anderson, 40, comes in on his home ground after being rested for the third-Test victory at Headingley. Robinson struggled with back spasms in Leeds, but was considered fit to play in Manchester. Australia lead the series 2-1, so England must win to have a chance of regaining the Ashes. England: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson. Moeen Ali has been confirmed to bat at number three after being promoted up the order for the second innings of the dramatic three-wicket win at Headingley. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/285A/production/_130403301_moeenali.jpgHarry Brook, who batted at three in the first innings of that match, remains in the number-five position where he scored a match-winning 75 in the second innings. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F538/production/_129367726__ai_5052.jpgAnderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, struggled in the first two Tests of the series, both of which England lost. After returning from a groin injury suffered playing for Lancashire, he managed only three wickets against the Australians on unresponsive surfaces at Edgbaston and Lord's. Anderson now returns for what could be his last Test at Old Trafford, hoping to break a run that has seen him not play in a win against Australia since 2015. Indeed, England have not beaten Australia on this ground since 1981 - the visitors retained the Ashes with victory in Manchester four years ago. The weather could play an important role across the week. The forecast is mixed for the Test and England were forced to train indoors on Monday morning.

The Ashes 2023: Ben Stokes says rain-affected fourth Test could help England..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer at Emirates Old Trafford.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E81D/production/_130412495_benstokes.jpg Ben Stokes is England's leading run-scorer in this Ashes seriesCaptain Ben Stokes says a weather-shortened fourth Ashes Test could suit England as they look to level the series with Australia at Old Trafford. After victory in the third Test to cut their deficit to 2-1, England face another must-win situation to keep the series alive. Rain is forecast over the weekend for the Test, which starts on Wednesday. "It helped us in the last game knowing that we had to press the game on to stay in the series," said Stokes. Speaking to BBC Sport, the skipper added: "If the weather does look like it's going to have an affect on the time in the game, it probably suits us even more because we know what we need to do. "We can't just go hopefully, we have to look to press this game on. Everyone understands we will potentially be looking to press this game on even more if the weather is what it's predicted to be." Whereas England confirmed their XI on Monday, with James Anderson replacing Ollie Robinson in the pace attack, Australia are yet to confirm their team. They look to set to leave out off-spinner Todd Murphy in favour of fit-again all-rounder Cameron Green, who missed the third Test at Headingley with a hamstring injury and saw replacement Mitchell Marsh score a century. Including Green and Marsh in the same team would extend Australia's batting, making it harder for England to take the 20 wickets they need to win the match and stay in the series. But omitting Murphy would not be without risk. Australia have not gone into a Test without a frontline spinner in more than 11 years. Of the last 14 bowlers to appear on the Old Trafford honours board for taking five wickets in a Test innings, nine are spinners. Murphy came into the Australia side in Leeds for the injured Nathan Lyon but bowled only two overs in England's second innings as they completed a tense three-wicket win. Lyon, probably the greatest finger spinner to ever play for Australia, had featured in 100 consecutive matches before injuring his calf in the second Test at Lord's. "It's not quite apples for apples," said Australia captain Pat Cummins. "We think Todd is fantastic. I would have loved to have used him more last week, but the conditions favoured pace bowling. "It's all conditions-based. Todd has a big future. It's more the conditions or the way I used him, as opposed to how he bowled." 'No doubt Anderson will be crucial for us'ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CB02/production/_128707915_james_anderson_getty2.jpgLancashire's Anderson, 40, returns after missing the Headingley Test to play on his home ground. England's all-time leading wicket-taker managed only three scalps in the first two Tests and has never taken a Test five-wicket haul at Old Trafford. Anderson has also not been on the winning side against Australia since 2015. "I've got no doubt that at some point this week Jimmy Anderson will be very crucial for us," said Stokes. "When you're a world-class performer for such a long period of time you can understand the frustration for him that he has not felt like he has contributed. "He's not taken nearly 700 wickets without going through two games of not feeling at his best. World-class performers bounce back and deliver." The first three Tests of this series have been won by the narrow margins of two wickets, 43 runs and three wickets. Never before have England come from 2-0 down to win the Ashes. Given the thrilling nature of the series so far, Stokes believes forcing a deciding Test at The Oval would rank the 2023 contest as possibly the best Ashes of all time. "If we win this one then going into the last game at 2-2, it would be hard not to say this is the best men's Ashes series in a long time, if not the best," he said. "Overall, take away Australia and England, the cricket that's been played has been absolutely brilliant. "Everyone who's watched at the ground or at home on TV has just really enjoyed the cricket that's been played. "There've been some pretty special moments out on the cricket ground, some special individual performances as well. I guess that's what you want from sport."

We promise to deliver to those customers an amazing experience off the field. "We leave it to Ben and the team to do it on the field! "We've been doing Ashes tests for over 100 years here so we're very excited about it. You can feel the atmosphere, it gets very tense just half an hour before the first ball. "I think Emirates Old Trafford has a very, very good pitch here. In 2005 I think Ricky Ponting scored a big 100 to get the draw. "We always have a bit of weather in Manchester, but it kind of adds to the interest I suppose. "And with Jimmy Anderson here as well, he's absolutely fantastic, an unbelievable athlete and in this Test attack, those five bowlers have more wickets going into a Test match than any. "Ideally, we want to win the toss and have Jimmy bowling in these conditions this morning. "Jim is an absolute legend of Lancashire and England. And Shane Warne 30 years ago bowled the ball of the century here, so Emirates Old Trafford has a load of Ashes history - and Jim is about to write his." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/19/b3877bb6-b8e4-4a0b-9842-4ea6a8234ffb.jpgOld Trafford

England win the toss and bowl first..Big moment! Apparently, the pitch is good but the overhead conditions are lending themselves to bowling first. Over to you, Mr Anderson and co.
After the toss England captain Ben Stokes is told by Mike Atherton on Sky Sports that no captain has won the toss, bowled first and won a Test at Old Trafford.
Stokes said: "It would be a nice time to be the first to do that!"
On the weather: "We have spoken about the weather but I think today is not too bad and if the Test goes deeper and we'll come up with some plans then. The way we go about it naturally does that. If the game gets to the point where we push things on we can do that."
On the return of James Anderson: "The break has done him the world of good. He's been a unbelievable performer over many a year. Even if he's not operating at what he thinks is his best level he is still putting batters under pressure. I am looking forward to him running in from his own end."
On the decision to bat Moeen Ali at number three: "It's more about Moeen's ability to impact the game than anything else, especially with Chris Woakes at eight. It's nothing to do with protecting Harry Brook at five whatsoever."
The teams England: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Moeen Ali, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.
Australia: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (c), Josh Hazlewood.
Australia captain Pat Cummins on Sky Sports: "We would have bowled first too but it looks like a good wicket, so it's not a bad toss to lose.
"We've made the call to play without a spinner on the conditions and we feel like we've got plenty of bowling, two all-rounders plus Travis Head so lots of options.
"Losing Nathan Lyon made things different for us, so we had to change things a bit from normal and I guess there is always an element of risk in that.
"It can be dangerous [looking to draw]. I know there's weather around but we are absolutely playing to win and to win the series."
Alex Hartley..Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special The pitches at Old Trafford this year have had been decent with pace and a carry. I am expecting pace and bounce. James Anderson has never had a five-for at Old Trafford for England, so could this be the time? It could be the last time he plays a Test here but this isn't a sentimental pick. England are not about that. They will pick their best team to win the match.
Michael Vaughan..Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special It's been a brilliant series. Both teams have put Test cricket in the forefront of the mind. I've lost count of the amount of people I have met this week asking me how to get tickets.
Jonathan Agnew..BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special This Ashes has really caught the public imagination. England have to win to keep the Ashes alive and wouldn't it be a fitting climax to go to The Oval at 2-2. It's quite muggy here with a bit of a chill and a breeze.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/578a/live/89317f30-1112-11ee-816c-eb33efffe2a0.pngBeansy in Northumberland: So excited for another day of Ashes excitement. I won't be working very hard today. Roger, Leeds: I'm already getting panicked and the toss hasn't happened yet! from Roger near Leeds Oliver: it’s looking a little cloudier in Trafford Park now, perfect swing conditions for our Jimmy! Surely we’re not going to get more than 3 days of play here? It’s made for Bazball right? Right? John Petrie: Australia has improved its batting depth, but Anderson Broad, Wood and Woakes is a strong attack in these conditions. Old Trafford crowd has a role to play today. Howard: Re. 08.44 and Saturday’s weather, I agree it would be a nightmare not having any live Test cricket to show during the ceremony. Bad luck. Timothy, Dorset: Due to the possibility of rain in the next few days, now is the time to go crazy and play Bazball, otherwise the series is lost. Come on England! Josh: I wonder who would make an apt 600th for Broad..? Mark, Manchester: Please can you ask Tuffers to say every new batter is key for Australia?? Worked a charm on Khawaja. Paul: Is this the oldest four pronged attack out there - Wood the youngest at 33 ? Malcolm: Sitting on the runway at Ibiza airport delayed an hour. Bright point is being able to listen to the Test match on TMS. Luke: Currently in Bari, Italy. Have found a Scottish Pub... that isn't showing the cricket so am listening to TMS. Hoping Mark Wood can bring his own heatwave. from Luke Jon: Enjoying the commentary around the pool in Gran Canaria. Even my wife Jeanie is listening. It took 30 years but I think she is hooked after the last game. from Jon Craig, Devon: First time at a Test match. Cracking ground, weather holding out. Just need some luck and get a couple more down by lunch. Rachel T: The mission remains the same. GET SMITH. Ryan: Slightly concerned judging by the pitch, if we are going to lose a lot of time due to weather England really needed a bowler friendly pitch, can’t afford to not bowl them out today. Don, Liverpool: Amazed when I saw that England had won the toss that they chose to field. I think that decision will come home to roost in the afternoon session I'm afraid. Hope I'm wrong. Tim, Southampton: This has a Steve Smith ton written all over it. I hope I am wrong. Blake in Warwickshire: Ben Stokes, do that thing where you bowl a random over and break a concrete-set partnership.

Then we can wave goodbye to the Ashes today. Bernard, Poland: I don't know how the umpire didn't give that straight away... And it's a real shame he didn't as Australia would have burnt a review - Smith is so arrogant he'd review with all three stumps out the ground. Mark in Tenerife: Curses to you Mark Wood! I was just about to jump in the pool to cool off but have now delayed it as I feel something exciting is going to happen. Ashley, Western: Big thanks to Glenn McGrath for the heads up on Catania Airport! Currently listening from the island of Stromboli, and am synchronising my lunch and tea with the sessions from Manchester. Octopus salad at 2pm local time, and pistachio ice cream at 16.40! I’ve had worse days to be fair! Ian in Zante: Flying back from Zante, we are having to refuel at Dubrovnik so I get a free soft drink and another chance to check the score! Darran on honeymoon in Bali: Currently keeping an eye on the score from very warm Bali. The problem is we're seven hours ahead, and I'm on my honeymoon. So sneaky looks but can't be up too late. So come on England, skittle these seven wickets really quickly Stephen in Mauritius: Listening to TMS whilst watching the sun set un Mauritius and doing a bit of catching practice with my son Orson. Come on Jimmy. Simon in Lagos, Nigeria: Slow hotel internet creating massive tension each time I refresh and see the three flashing circles hovering; desperate to see that block of YELLOW….. Oli, in Kazakhstan: Hitting refresh in the depths of a zinc process plant desperate for Broady to strike the 600 mark so that the Aussie standing near me pipes down and goes back to, well, laying down his pipes. Blocker Brady, Manchester: Moeen’s honey finger gets its first victim. A cracker!

Wednesday 19th July 2023 - 4th Test Match - Day 1 - At the Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester - England won the toss and decided to field.
Australia 299-8 (83 overs) Warner 32, Labuschagne 51, Smith 41, Head 48, Starc 23 not out, Broad 2-68, Woakes 4-52
Close - Australia are 299 for 8
The Ashes 2023: England chip away at Australia in crucial fourth Test..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer at Emirates Old Trafford.England chipped away at Australia's batting on a tense and fluctuating first day of the crucial fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford. At 2-1 down and needing to win to force a series decider at The Oval, England struck at regular intervals to leave the tourists 299-8 at the close. Stuart Broad took two, with the second - Travis Head hooking to long leg - making him only the fifth bowler in Test history to reach 600 wickets. Chris Woakes was the most consistently dangerous - his 4-52 included a magnificent catch from under-fire wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow to remove Mitchell Marsh. Though England won the toss, Australia, who only need to draw one of the final two Tests to retain the urn, were presented with ideal batting conditions. But scores of 51 each from Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne, 48 to Head and 41 by Steve Smith tell a tale of batters doing the hard work but failing to make telling contributions. Indeed, at 255-7 Australia were in danger of being bowled out inside a day, only for Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc to resist. As the close drew near, Woakes removed Carey with the second new ball, leaving England with the opportunity to mop up the tail on Thursday morning. All this against the backdrop of bad weather that is forecast to disrupt the final two days, possibly adding another variable in a series that has already produced three tight finishes. Former England captain Michael Vaughan on Test Match Special: "I'm intrigued by this pitch, I don't think you can play aggressively constantly. England will come out and bat quickly. Australia have lost an opportunity here." England bowler Stuart Broad: "My mum has been an amazing support for me and her mindset has always been playing for fun and it always felt like a hobby to me. "I've reconnected massively with that - Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes that's been their philosophy and I've loved every moment of it." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/2F1D/production/_130416021_chriswoakescelebrates.jpgChris Woakes

The Ashes 2023: Zak Crawley's 189 gives England lead over Australia in fourth Test..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer at Emirates Old Trafford.Zak Crawley's astonishing 189 stunned Australia and kept England on course for an Ashes comeback on an exhilarating second day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Crawley cracked the highest score by an England batter in a home Ashes Test for 26 years to give the hosts the perfect chance of levelling the series at 2-2. In a 182-ball stay, he crunched 21 fours and three sixes to help England to 384-4, a lead of 67. Crawley shared a stand of 121 with Moeen Ali, who was superb in making 54 at number three, then a riotous double-century partnership with Joe Root, the former captain unlucky to fall for 84. Though Crawley and Root were both bowled by deliveries that kept low, Harry Brook and Ben Stokes laid a platform to attack on Friday morning with an unbroken stand of 33. On a perfect day for the home side, James Anderson removed Pat Cummins with the first ball of the morning and Chris Woakes completed his maiden five-wicket haul in an Ashes Test to dismiss Australia for 317. With the series on the line and bad weather closing in at the weekend, England not only wanted to build a lead, but do so swiftly enough to leave time to force a result. They did so in a fashion that was barely believable and now have a golden opportunity to level the series at 2-2 and set up a delicious Ashes decider at The Oval. ................................................................................................................................................................ England opener Zak Crawley, speaking to Test Match Special: "I rode my luck at times and played some really good parts in the innings and there were other parts where I was really streaky but I'm happy with how I have played. It was a special day. "I just keep backing my game and I've done that well this series where I just keep trying to play the way I play. That's the only way that is going to work for me." Australia assistant coach Daniel Vettori: "It was obviously a taxing session because Crawley was so dominant and played so well from the onset. We had some clear plans but he was too good." Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "England play a certain brand that completely suits Crawley. That innings has put England on the front foot and this moment will be spoken about for a long period of time, particularly if England go on to win the Ashes."

You just have to watch play this morning. England will come out all guns blazing. Saturday is forecast to be washed out, so it's only today and Sunday left to play.

If there is rain on Saturday, then there will probably still be some cloud around on Sunday. The rain will have juiced up the pitch a little.......could be a difficult day to bat ! It could be perfect conditions for Sir Jimmy's last Hurrah !
