UEFA Women's Champions League - Group Stage - Fixturei2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article30949192.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/1_GettyImages-1228273075.jpgBayern Munich v Arsenal - 5.45pm Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall feels his squad need to go “full throttle” into a hectic schedule – starting against Bayern Munich in the Women’s Champions League. The Gunners head to Germany on the back of a frustrating goalless draw with Everton in the Women’s Super League, and will then have little turnaround time before hosting title rivals Chelsea on Saturday. With another home European fixture against Norwegian side Valerenga on October 16 before playing West Ham in the WSL, Eidevall knows his squad will be stretched as they tackle the challenges ahead. “We are in four competitions, but saying that, the Champions League and the league, they will always be very special to me and the team,” Eidevall said at a news conference. “Right now we are in a situation where we need to go full throttle in both of them, so then it has to be. “Before the game against Everton, I said it could be different from a scheduled perspective. Now we are just focused game-by-game, doing our very best to prepare here for Bayern Munich and just looking ahead to the challenges."

Wednesday 9th October 2024Group C: Valerenga 0 Juventus 1 Group D: Hammarby 2 St Polten 0 Group D: Manchester City 2 (Layzell 36, Shaw 77) Barcelona 0
Match report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporter at Joie StadiumEngland defender Naomi Layzell scored a goal and assisted another on her Women's Champions League debut as Manchester City stunned defending champions Barcelona at Joie Stadium. Layzell, 20, had never scored in senior football before Wednesday's showdown with Barcelona but she scrambled in a corner to give City a first-half lead. She completed a fairytale evening by supplying the pass that sent striker Khadija Shaw through one-on-one with goalkeeper Catalina Coll and the Jamaican slotted the ball home for City's second of the night. Having spent the opening minutes being tested by two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, young full-back Layzell eventually stamped her mark and it will be an evening she will not forget. "To do that, scoring and assisting when she was playing out of position against Barcelona, is unbelievable," said City boss Gareth Taylor. "It is special. I think if you get to know Naomi then you will say it doesn't surprise you. She is very humble and coachable. She's playing in a non-favoured position at right-back because she is a centre-back. She will be on cloud nine." On a chilly night at the Joie Stadium in Manchester, fans were treated to an exhilarating contest between two clubs who consider themselves serious contenders to win the competition this season. The woodwork was struck twice in the first half - by City's Lauren Hemp and Barcelona's Caroline Graham Hansen - while home defender Laia Aleixandri, heavily linked with a move to the Spanish giants this summer, cleared Ewa Pajor's poked effort off the goalline. Barcelona came out stronger in the second half but City held on for a huge victory on their return to the main European stage for the first time since 2021. Taylor's side sit level on points with Hammarby in Group D, after the Swedish side beat Austria's St Polten 2-0 earlier on Wednesday. Group C: Bayern Munich 5 (Viggósdóttir 43, Lohmann 56, Harder 73, 78, 86) Arsenal 2 (Caldentey 30, Codina 65)
Match report by Charlotte Coates, BBC Sport journalistPernille Harder's hat-trick ensured Arsenal's return to the Women's Champions League ended in defeat in an end-to-end encounter against Bayern Munich in Germany. The former Chelsea forward, who had failed to score in her previous five European games, met Carolin Simon's corner to head her side into a 3-2 lead. This came eight minutes after Laia Codina had powered in a header from Katie McCabe's corner to level the tie at 2-2. Denmark international Harder cemented the points for the hosts with another header in the 78th minute, before completing her hat-trick four minutes from time after goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger spilled her initial save. "I'm very happy with our performance, especially in the second half," Harder told Uefa.com, external. "I think we did really good today. "The last few years have been tough with injuries, so now I'm just happy to be back playing in the Champions League. I was happy with the goals and the win." The Gunners started the game on the front foot with Mariona Caldentey giving them the lead after half an hour after expertly volleying McCabe’s cross beyond keeper Maria Grohs. After falling behind, German champions Bayern started to apply pressure on the Arsenal backline and found the leveller 13 minutes later thanks to an unstoppable header from Glodis Viggosdottir. The Bayern Munich captain rose highest in the box to expertly loop a header over Manuela Zinsberger after a pinpoint diagonal ball from England midfielder Georgia Stanway. Alexander Straus' side were in the ascendency after the equaliser and came close to scoring before Lohmann drilled her right-footed strike into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. Next up for Jonas Eidevall’s side in Group C is the visit of Norway's Valerenga, who were beaten 1-0 by Juventus, on Wednesday, October 16th.

Jordan Nobbs on 'special' record, coaching and resilience..by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporter
Jordan Nobbs Career Stats: Age: 31, Position: Midfield, Played: 446, Goals: 118, Clubs: Sunderland, Arsenal, Aston Villa, England U17, 19, 20, 23 and Englandi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/01/05/16/66235753-11603321-image-a-1_1672936643312.jpgAston Villa midfielder Jordan Nobbs considered it "special" to break the Women's Super League appearance record as she reflected on her "up and down" 15-year career. The 31-year-old played her 193rd match in Villa's 4-2 defeat by Brighton on Saturday, having made her WSL debut for Arsenal against Chelsea in April 2011. Nobbs will be celebrated at Villa's home game against Leicester City this weekend but she has already "felt the love" from her current club. "Everyone was talking about it and they said it's such a huge achievement. It's always nice as a player for the club to recognise that," said Nobbs. "It's special. When you play football, your goal is to win things as a team, but when something comes along individually they are also nice memories to have. "You have to give yourself a pat on the back. I did see how hard I worked to get there. I took the moment because I want to enjoy those in football and not just let them pass me by." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/01/05/16/66235755-11603321-image-a-2_1672936645599.jpg'I’ve learned to just keep fighting'
Nobbs joined Villa in 2023 after 12 years with Arsenal and she has scored 58 goals across her 193 WSL appearances. She won 12 trophies at Arsenal, including three WSL titles, but had to overcome a number of serious injuries, which heavily affected her international career. "Those times, when you look back now, appear to have just flown by, but when you're actually in the moment it was one thing after each other," said Nobbs. A major setback for Nobbs came in November 2018. "After I did my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), I couldn't really catch a break and it was just the love of playing and believing that if I worked hard, eventually I could get back on the pitch," she said. "I just had to keep thinking there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Football is good and bad. You have amazing days and then you have bad days too. "I think it's just about trying to enjoy it as much as you can. I've always played football because I love it. I've probably learned to just keep fighting." Villa boss Robert de Pauw described Nobbs as a "little Luka Modric in midfield", something she joked she would write down and keep forever. She has long been considered one of England's brightest talents, catching the eye at WSL level after signing for Arsenal from Sunderland in 2010. Nobbs was named the England Player of the Year in 2016 and the FA Players' Player of the Year in 2017 - but a lot has changed throughout her WSL career. "It's probably just the level of support. Backroom staff, for example, that maybe you don't see or hear as much about," Nobbs said. "When we first started, we were still doing a lot on our own as players. Now, especially for the younger ones coming up, there's just so much they can learn and soak up on how to be the best footballer." shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/jordan-nobbs.jpgNobbs is likely to extend her appearances record this season with Chelsea midfielder Sophie Ingle, who has played 192 WSL games, currently out with an ACL injury. The midfielder is impressing with Aston Villa under new boss De Pauw and though it has crossed her mind, she has no plans to retire any time soon. "It's a tough one, isn't it? It's obviously a question that's in your mind. You have to start thinking about things like that," said Nobbs. "I think it will probably depend on game time and my body. That will probably be where my decision goes. "If I'm still in the WSL playing and performing to a good enough level, then I would not hang the boots up that quickly. I don't want to write myself off too quickly or too early." But while Nobbs intends to continue playing, she has already found an interest in coaching. She hopes to pass on her experiences to younger players in the game and says she has naturally taken on more responsibility throughout her career. "Coaching is definitely something I would want to look into and definitely be a part of. I would maybe take a little break, then go into it," she added. "The whole coaching side of things – the way teams press, how they play out from the back etc – I’m all for that."

Women's Super League - Result - Saturday 12th October 2024
Arsenal 1 (Foord 43) Chelsea 2 (Ramirez 4, Baltimore 16)
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Barclays-Womens-Super-League-Arsenal-v-Chelsea-Emirates-Stadium.jpg Chelsea players celebrate with goalscorer Mayra Ramirez.Match report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporter at Emirates Stadium Chelsea claimed a significant victory to increase pressure on Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall as his side fell further behind in the Women's Super League title race. Mayra Ramirez's inventive overhead kick bounced into the bottom corner within four minutes to give Chelsea the perfect start, and matters got worse for the Gunners when Sandy Baltimore was given a free header to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards. Arsenal boss Eidevall needed a response from his players and got one as Caitlin Foord danced around Lucy Bronze to fire the ball past goalkeeper Hannah Hampton just before half-time at Emirates Stadium. But they could not find a much-needed second - despite substitute Stina Blackstenius volleying against the underside of the crossbar with minutes to go - as Chelsea showed grit to hold out and added salt to Arsenal's wounds following a disappointing week. A goalless draw with Everton and a thumping defeat by Bayern Munich meant it was a crucial match for Arsenal - and this was a damaging result. Chelsea, meanwhile, still appear to have teething problems under new manager Sonia Bompastor but maintain their unbeaten start to the season. They were confronted for most of the second half, with defenders Millie Bright and Kadeisha Buchanan making numerous blocks as Arsenal's Foord and Alessia Russo came close, and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton had to make some big saves late on. At the other end, Chelsea's Ramirez remained a threat until her substitution midway through the second half, having picked up an earlier knock. It was a significant victory for Chelsea though, putting them just ahead of title rivals Manchester City - who play Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday - while Arsenal fall four points behind. shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Barclays-Womens-Super-League-Arsenal-v-Chelsea-Emirates-Stadium-1.jpgFrida Maanum of Arsenal and Kadeisha Buchanan of Chelsea.

Manchester United 3 (Terland 44, 45+4, Le Tissier 39 pen) Tottenham Hotspur 0
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Manchester-United-v-Tottenham-Hotspur-Barclays-Womens-Super-League.jpg Elisabeth Terland of Manchester United celebrates scoring her team’s first goal.
Report by Emily Salley, BBC Sport journalist at Leigh Sports VillageElisabeth Terland scored her first two goals in Manchester United colours to help them cruise to a 3-0 win over Tottenham in the Women's Super League. Terland, who joined United from Brighton in July, slammed in a cross from former Spurs forward Celin Bizet off the underside of the crossbar for the opener at Leigh Sports Village. The Norwegian pair linked up again a minute later to give United a healthy lead just before the break, with Terland heading home Bizet's whipped ball to the back post. Captain Maya Le Tissier completed the scoring when she slotted in from the penalty spot after Ashleigh Neville was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Terland was denied a hat-trick when her low strike was tipped onto the post by Becky Spencer, but she left the pitch to a warm standing ovation when she was replaced by Rachel Williams after 76 minutes. The result ensures Marc Skinner's side maintains their 100% record in the WSL with three wins from three this season. Despite a comfortable scoreline for the hosts, it was Spurs who made the brighter start with Martha Thomas forcing an early save by Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Clare Hunt and Bethany England saw efforts drift just wide, while Drew Spence saw her rifled strike from the edge of the area tipped over by Tullis-Joyce. However, Spurs were left playing catch-up thanks to Terland's double and the visitors' chances were limited in the second half.
Aston Villa 0 Leicester City 0
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Barclays-Womens-Super-League-Aston-Villa-v-Leicester-City-Villa-Park.jpg Jordan Nobbs of Aston Villa was given a shirt after breaking the record for all time WSL appearances.
Match report by Joe Rindl, BBC Sport journalistThe wait goes on for both Aston Villa and Leicester as they chase a first win of the season in the Women's Super League, following a cagey draw at Villa Park. Leicester keeper Janina Leitzig pulled off a brilliant save to deny Anna Patten from close range deep into second-half injury time. Villa substitute Adriana Leon also had a strike tipped over by Leitzig late on. Sophie Howard went closest for Leicester with an angled shot that trickled wide in the second half. Before kick-off, Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Nobbs was presented with a framed jersey as she broke the WSL appearance record last week.

Crystal Palace 0 Brighton & Hove Albion 1 (Bruna Vilamala 35)
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Barclays-Womens-Super-League-Crystal-Palace-v-Brighton-and-Hove-Albion-VBS-Community-Stadium-London.jpg Nikita Parris (9 Brighton) charges forward during the match with Crystal Palace
Match report by Charlotte Coates, BBC Sport journalistBrighton continued their impressive start to the Women's Super League season with a hard-fought win over Crystal Palace thanks to Bruna Vilamala's first-half finish. The on-loan Barcelona forward toe-poked into an open goal in the 35th minute, although home keeper Shae Yanez felt she had been fouled after colliding with Seagulls striker Nikita Parris following a lofted ball into the box. "I'm happy with the win but we had to grind it out," said boss Dario Vidosic. "We were probably our own worst enemies for a lot of that game with so many simple mistakes. We had to be a bit more patient in possession. "They played with five at the back and that low block is hard to break down but we made a lot of wrong decisions and, on the transition, they were always dangerous, although we were pretty solid defensively. I thought we could have had a penalty in the second half when Vicky Losada was brought down." Fran Kirby came close to doubling Brighton's lead after she charged into the box, but her left-foot strike was palmed behind. Three minutes into the second half, American Yanez was called into action again to claw away Vicky Losada's audacious chipped effort. Substitute Michelle Agyemang came within inches of a goal too, but her 89th-minute effort was blasted over the crossbar. Annabel Blanchard thought she had levelled for Laura Kaminski's side in stoppage time after she expertly worked space for a left foot drive, but visiting keeper Sophie Baggaley somehow tipped the ball over. Brighton, who have three wins from their first four WSL games, will next host Manchester United on Saturday, October 19 while Palace travel to Liverpool a day later.
Everton 1 (Saez 72 og) West Ham United 1 (Denton 10)
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Everton-v-West-Ham-United-Barclays-Womens-Super-League.jpg Heather Payne of Everton is challenged by Katrina Gorry of West Ham
Match report by Joe Rindl, BBC Sport journalistEverton finally got their first goal of the Women's Super League season as a second-half leveller rescued a draw at home against West Ham. Having started the campaign with no goals across three matches, Everton found the net through a Camila Saez own goal when Melissa Lawley's cross deflected in off the Hammers defender. Anouk Denton had given West Ham a 10th-minute lead with her first league goal for the club, smashing home from a few yards out after good hold-up play from forward Viviane Asseyi. Both sides remain without a win in the WSL this season and have collected just two points from their four league matches.

Liverpool 1 (Smith 41) Manchester City 2 (Shaw 58, 90+2)
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Liverpool-v-Manchester-City-Barclays-Womens-Super-League.jpg Khadija Shaw of Manchester City celebrates scoring her team’s 2nd goal with teammates Jill Roord and Lauren Hemp
Match report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporter at AnfieldKhadija Shaw says it was an "ugly win" against Liverpool, but "just as important", as Manchester City came from behind to regain top spot in the Women's Super League. The Jamaica striker scored twice in the second half, including a stoppage-time winner, as City battled past the resilient Reds at Anfield. "Coming into this game, we knew it was going to be tough," Shaw told Sky Sports. "At the end of the day, sometimes an ugly win is just as important for the three points - we just have to keep going. "We know the type of team Liverpool are. They are very direct and they like to put the balls in behind. "We knew that if we managed to focus on what we were capable of doing we were going to get goals." It was an anxious afternoon in Merseyside for City before Shaw cancelled out Olivia Smith's first-half opener and then struck the post with minutes remaining. She eventually found the winner in the second minute of added time, firing powerfully past goalkeeper Rachael Laws and dealing a late blow to the hosts. Liverpool, who were without manager Matt Beard on the touchline due to illness, looked set to hold out for a draw after a strong opening half but buckled under the pressure. They had an injury-troubled afternoon with goalkeeper Laws having several issues throughout the second half after standout performer Smith and key centre-back Gemma Bonner were forced off. But City, who also missed Vivianne Miedema and Naomi Layzell, were persistent and it paid off as they collected their reward for a relentless effort after the restart. The result capped off a strong week for the visitors, who stunned European champions Barcelona in the Women's Champions League on Wednesday. "Days like today are fantastic," said City boss Gareth Taylor. "It solidifies what we do and I said to the girls, 'that's a great way to win'. "I felt we got our rewards in the end, we were dominant. Sometimes you don't get the rewards but we were patient and kept probing until the end. "I was really proud of that last half hour of the performance."

Sunderland 1 (Scarr 78) Newcastle United 2 (Lumsden 28, 49)
cdn.themag.co.uk/assets/sunderland_newcastle_united_black.jpg
Match report by Charlotte Coates, BBC Sport journalistBeth Lumsden scored twice as Newcastle beat local rivals Sunderland in front of a record crowd for a women's second-tier match. A crowd of 15,387 gathered inside the Stadium of Light, beating the previous record of 11,137, set when Sheffield United played London City in November 2022. Magpies forward Lumsden opened the scoring in the 28th minute after cutting inside to finish past Demi Lambourne. Four minutes into the second half, Lumsden doubled the lead for the visitors by scoring directly from an inswinging corner. Emily Scarr gave the home side hope by halving the deficit with 12 minutes remaining, before Jenna Dear wasted a great opportunity to level. Newcastle boss Becky Langley said: "The fans are unbelievable, the numbers they come in, home and away, and when we saw the end packed out with Geordies today, I said, 'we are playing for those fans', because we know how much the Tyne-Wear derby means to the fans." Sunderland manager Mel Reay said: "It was an unbelievable atmosphere. Hopefully the fans enjoyed it and they'll come back. The fans roared the team on and it gives you extra motivation." The win means Newcastle sit sixth in the Women's Championship while Sunderland remain eighth.

'Shock' at Jonas Eidevall resignation but not his exit..by Katie Wright, BBC Sport Senior Journalisti.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/15/10/90865899-0-image-a-15_1728985603032.jpgJonas Eidevall had been coming under increasing pressure at Arsenal as his side's stuttering start to the season continued but there was still surprise when the head coach's exit was announced on Tuesday morning. It was not the Gunners announcing they were going in a different direction, rather the boss himself who had decided it was time for him to leave. His side had won just one of their four Women's Super League games, while their return to the group stages of the Champions League started with a demoralising 5-2 defeat at Bayern Munich. Former Arsenal player Ellen White told BBC Radio 5 Live's Women’s Football Weekly Podcast: "I was really shocked, shocked more so on him resigning. "There was a lot of pressure on him as a manager and the football club in general. "It was inevitable it was going to come soon, but I was surprised it came now rather than after the next few games.” White says she found it "really hard" watching the team's performance in their 2-1 Women's Super League defeat by rivals Chelsea on Saturday. “I couldn't see what the players' tactics were, what the philosophy was. It looked very disjointed, quite individual.” i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/15/10/90866335-13961305-image-a-17_1728986015231.jpgFormer Arsenal defender Casey Stoney, who was sacked by her NWSL club San Diego Wave in June, was seen as an early frontrunner for the job having returned to England. The ex-Manchester United manager told Sky Sports' Three Players and a Podcast recently that she was "chomping to get back in" for the right opportunity, yet she is not believed to be under consideration by Arsenal. Another out-of-work manager currently living in England is former Netherlands coach Mark Parsons, while Tony Gustavsson, who led Australia to the World Cup semi-finals, recently left his role with his country. Englishman Nick Cushing, who led Manchester City to their first WSL title in 2016, is currently head coach at New York City but has always remained open to a return to England. The Gunners also have a number of impressive coaches in their ranks who could be in the frame, including Arsenal legend Kelly Smith, former Brighton manager Melissa Clarke-Reed, and Renee Slegers, who succeeded Eidevall at his former club Rosengard and will have the chance to impress as interim head coach. White said Arsenal have a group of players that are "phenomenal" but it is all about finding the manager who can create the "right blend". Arsenal have the squad to win any game, according to Beattie, but they need to get back to playing the "Arsenal way". "That free-flowing football, that technical ability that everyone has at that club, I think that's what the fans would want to see, first and foremost." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/15/10/90866235-13961305-image-a-18_1728986076087.jpg

England's Euro 2022 final match-winner Chloe Kelly has been included in the Lionesses' squad for the friendlies with Germany and South Africa
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/04/12/16/83559757-0-image-a-1_1712935379032.jpgEngland play Germany at Wembley on 25th October 7.30pm before hosting South Africa in Coventry on 29th October 7.45pm. The Lionesses have not played since a draw in Sweden on 16th July secured their place at Euro 2025. The friendlies with Germany and South Africa mark the build-up to Euro 2025 when Wiegman's side will defend their European crown in Switzerland from 2nd-27th July. England also face Olympic champions the United States, the number one team in the world in Fifa's rankings, at Wembley on 30 November and Switzerland at Bramall Lane on 3 December. "Qualifying directly for the finals provides us with a very valuable opportunity to play four friendlies this autumn and lay the foundations for next summer," said Wiegman. Chloe's dogs, Otis and Rolo, also joined the couple during their big day and were suitably dressed in tuxedos. The couple have shared their wedding day with British Vogue, with Chloe telling the publication: 'Looking back on it, it was a proud moment for us both that we did it all ourselves. 'I joked to the registrar I’m glad I’m never doing it again though, it was so nerve-wracking before the ceremony!' Chloe also spoke about how they first met. 'Scott was working as a groundsman at Everton while I was playing there', Chloe said. 'One day I held the door for him, and ever since that day he kept saying he was going to message me, when he did slide into my DMs, I didn’t see it for ages, because it was in my requests folder, and then when I did see it I was like, "Who is this?" But when I saw a few people that I knew had followed him, I realised, I must know him.' The pair hit it off on their first date to Ikea, which happened because Chloe was moving home. Chloe shared some of her wedding snaps on Instagram and wrote: 'To forever with you'. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/01/15/79272317-13698327-Later_Chloe_took_to_her_Instagram_story_with_an_adorable_picture-a-24_1722523254280.jpgChloe's dogs, Otis and Rolo, also joined the couple during their big dayi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/01/15/86262097-13698327-Looking_rather_different_off_the_pitch_the_group_of_women_ditche-a-25_1722523257113.jpg

Wednesday 16th October 2024Group D: Barcelona 9 Hammerby 0 Group C: Juventus 0 Bayern Munich 2 Group C: Arsenal 4 (Fox 2, Foord 29, Caldentey 85, Russo 90+3) Valerenga 1
Match summary by Faye Hackwell, Reporting from Arsenal StadiumPutting in a performance to make their fans proud was what captain Little identified as Arsenal’s priority ahead of this game. They’ve done that with a 4-1 victory and there is a sense of relief around the Arsenal Stadium that the hosts have collected their first three points of the section. Vålerenga kept themselves in contention, with Enblom making a string of brilliant saves, and will feel frustrated the hunt for their first group stage points continues. Group D: St Polten 2 Manchester City 3 (Kennedy 5, Fujino 57, Fowler 80)
Match report by Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalistMary Fowler scored a late winner as Manchester City survived a scare to beat Austrians St Polten in the Women's Champions League. Visitors City had started their European campaign with a hugely impressive 2-0 win against defending champions Barcelona, but they were made to work for these three points in Group D by spirited opponents. Alanna Kennedy had given Manchester City the lead with a stunning strike in the fifth minute, driving in an unstoppable effort off the inside of the post from 25 yards. A second looked to be a matter of time as they created a number of chances and hit the woodwork through Chloe Kelly. But St Polten had shown flashes of decent attacks and they equalised just before the break when Manchester City failed to deal with a corner and Melanie Brunnthaler fired in from close range. Half-time offered the visitors a chance to regroup but they were stunned early in the second half as Kamila Dubcova's neat finish put St Polten ahead. But the lead lasted barely five minutes as Aoba Fujino calmly slotted in her first goal for Manchester City. Fowler then ensured the visitors took all three points when she nodded home following a corner late on. "I'm just really pleased to get the three points," said City boss Gareth Taylor after the game. "I think it was a bit of a lesson learned. When you play teams like Polten who people expect to be an easy three points, these games certainly aren't."

Rachel Daly to raise awareness for Cure Leukaemia research..by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporteri.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/27/13/75891189-0-image-a-4_1695817827441.jpgAston Villa striker Rachel Daly has been named an ambassador for Cure Leukaemia and hopes to raise awareness of funding for research nurses. Daly, 32, was introduced to the cancer charity while on a training camp with England at St George's Park and says it was a "no-brainer to help them". The Euro 2022 winner, who retired from international football in April, has been learning about the illness since her grandma was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL) eight years ago. "It’s been a sore subject in my family. CLL is where the bone marrow makes too many lymphocytes," she told BBC Sport. "We’ve been living with that in the family for many years now and I was always passionate about it. "Cure Leukaemia are doing so much work across the country to fund research nurses – and that’s the most important thing – to run clinical trials and find new treatments. "To know there are people out there that are really trying to help is amazing." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/04/10/18/83473731-13293411-image-a-3_1712770880652.jpgDaly says it has been "really helpful" for her family to learn about the illness and what research is being carried out. She hopes to share what she has learned with other families who might be going through similar journeys. "[My grandma] is currently living in a nursing home and has two major treatments each year. It’s a constant battle," said Daly. "I don’t think she actually realises how poorly she is. With the type she has, there is typically no symptoms at the beginning which was the case for her. "Later on, non-painful lymph node swelling became apparent. There was tiredness, fevers, weight loss, and at first it was really scary as we didn’t know what was going on. "To find out it was that, it was tough. It became a really difficult part of my mum’s life in particular as she had to be there for her and care for her." But while they continue to search for treatments, Daly says there "can be some light at the end of the tunnel and some success stories". She hopes to bring positivity when visiting patients, having spent time at Birmingham's Children's Hospital in December, which she says "touched" her. This year Cure Leukaemia hope to fund specialist research nurses for children's patients and will be announcing 11 hospitals which will form a trial network. It is a crucial time for the charity and Daly says it is important to use her platform to "drive change". "The spotlight is on us and we’ve earned that right so I don’t want to see that go by the wayside and just post pictures on Instagram," said Daly. "How can I be influential and help drive change on or off the pitch with diseases or mental health? "I’m not just here to be a footballer, I’m here to make the world a better place and push positivity and raise awareness. It's so important to me."

Thursday 17th October 2024Group A: Galatasaray 1 Roma 6 Group A: Wolfsburg 0 Olympique Lyonnais 2 Group B: Real Madrid 4 Celtic 0 Group B: Twente 1 Chelsea 3 (Beever-Jones 7, Hamano 18, Reiten 63 pen)
Match report by Michael Emons, BBC Sport journalistChelsea maintained their 100% start to the season by beating Dutch side Twente to move three points clear at the top of Women's Champions League Group B. Aggie Beever-Jones gave the Blues a strong start in the Netherlands, scoring after seven minutes when she collected the ball from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd and sent a deflected 25-yard strike into the net. It was 2-0 after 18 minutes as Maika Hamano's long-range lobbed effort caught Twente goalkeeper Olivia Clark off her line, with the Wales international unable to recover in time. Guro Reiten scored Chelsea's third with a calmly taken penalty after fellow substitute Mayra Ramirez was tripped by Twente's Lieske Carleer. The hosts pulled one back in the 68th minute when Nikee van Dijk raced on to a pass from Ella Peddemors and shot past Zecira Musovic, but it was not enough to deny the visitors. Chelsea have never won this competition, losing in the 2021 final under Emma Hayes' leadership. They are enjoying a highly promising start to the current campaign after Sonia Bompastor replaced Hayes, who took charge of the United States' women's team in the summer. Former Lyon boss Bompastor has now won all three of her Women's Super League games and both Champions League fixtures. cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/KahL-GGV7aFQVyF5FOaQGBWuQl0=/0x0:6000x4000/920x613/filters:focal(1520x781:2480x1741):format(webp)/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/73660657/2178201755.0.jpg

Liverpool boss Matt Beard has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Women's Super League game against Crystal Palace at 2pm.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2021/08/29/00/47220867-0-image-a-159_1630192126873.jpg
Here are the key lines from his news conference:Sophie Roman Haug is unavailable and will undergo a scan on her ankle injury Sunday might be "too soon" for Grace Fisk to return, but Ceri Holland is available. Beard said Jonas Eidevall will be a "big miss" in the league following his resignation as Arsenal boss. He said Liverpool's defensive effort in their 2-1 defeat by Manchester City last week was "outstanding". Beard is "not worried" about Liverpool's "indifferent" start to the season. He called Marie Hobinger "such a gifted player", adding that she has been a "real creative spark this week". The Liverpool boss has been "impressed" with how Crystal Palace have adapted to the WSL this season. He said the international break comes at a "good time" for Liverpool and will allow them to get players back fit. Liverpool boss Matt Beard said it was "disappointing" to see Jonas Eidevall resign from Arsenal, but that manager exits are becoming "part and parcel" of the women's game. Eidevall's resignation was announced on Tuesday following Arsenal's winless run in their opening four Women's Super League games of the 2024-25 season. "It is always disappointing to see a fellow manager lose their job, even though it was the Jonas’ decision," Beard said. "I took that decision when I was at West Ham. You feel you've done as much as you can, but he’s going to be a miss. "He was a character on the touchline, that's for sure. He's a lovely person." Beard said that the investment that top clubs are making adds to the pressure on managers. "Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in our country and I think if you look at the money that they've spent and the move to the Emirates, that's going to put pressure on you," he said. "I think every single football club now with the investment - the owners and the board members are going to be obviously wanting to see results on their investment. "It's going to end up becoming pretty much like what you see in the men's game."
