Emma Hayes: Chelsea manager has emergency hysterectomy because of endometriosis.

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes will take time away from the club as she recovers from an emergency hysterectomy.

Hayes, 45, revealed she had surgery last week as part of her "ongoing battle with endometriosis".

In a statement, five-time WSL winner Hayes told fans she would "need time and patience to return to full health".

"I know you'll respect that my health comes first and at this time I've got to prioritise what I need to do for me," Hayes said.

Assistant manager Denise Reddy will take charge of the reigning Women's Super League champions in Hayes' absence, with general manager Paul Green carrying out media duties.

A club statement said: "Everybody at Chelsea would like to wish Emma a speedy recovery and we will continue to support her during this time."

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the womb which can take out areas of tissue causing endometrial pain.

Hayes has publicly advocated for greater awareness of endometriosis, which affects around one in 10 women and can cause debilitating pain and heavy periods.

The day before winning her first WSL title in 2015, Hayes had a procedure in hospital to remove a contraceptive coil which had been inserted to relieve the symptoms of the illness.

"I can see why women go out of their minds before diagnosis - I can totally relate to that," Hayes told the Telegraph last year.

"I completely appreciate the suffering but I refuse to let it get on top of me. I feel the pain but I refuse to let it take over."

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall was among those responding to the statement with messages of support for Hayes, who has become one of the most respected coaches in football and turned Chelsea into the dominant force in the English game since her appointment in 2012.

"We have built a tremendous team over many years and we've adopted a very multi-disciplinary approach so that if situations like this arise, we are capable of being able to respond to the challenge," said Hayes.

"We also know the team are very special and we have no doubt they'll do everything to maintain their high standards.

"To our fans, you've had to listen to me bellowing from the other side of the pitch every week. But now I want to hear you even louder because I'll be sitting at home watching the team on the television until my return."

Chelsea have won two of their opening three WSL games this season and visit Everton on Sunday.

What is endometriosis?

It is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows elsewhere inside the body - often around reproductive organs, bowel and bladder
Like the womb lining, tissue builds up every month then bleeds
However, unlike a period there is no way for the blood to escape
The build-up of trapped blood can result in internal lesions and scar tissue
Some people experience no symptoms but for many others the pain can be debilitating and the condition can lead to infertility
There is no known cause or cure for the condition

Leicester manager Lydia Bedford has stepped down as manager with director of women's football Willie Kirk taking over the Women's Super League side.

Bedford and her assistant Nicola Williams both depart after the players were informed of the decision on Thursday.

Leicester are bottom of the WSL table with no points from their opening six matches of the season.

In a statement the Foxes said "a change in direction is necessary".

The statement continues: "Lydia departs with our sincere thanks for her contribution to the ongoing establishment of LCFC Women and our very best wishes for the next steps in her career."

Kirk, who was appointed as Leicester's Director of Women's and Girl's Football in July, will take on the role with immediate effect meaning he will take training from Saturday and will be in the dugout for Sunday's WSL match against Arsenal.

Kirk, 44, who will be supported in his new role by first team coach Steve Kirby and technical coach Emile Heskey, previously managed Bristol City and Everton and was assistant manager at Manchester United.

Bedford was appointed in November 2021 on a contract until the end of the season.

When she took over Leicester were bottom of the league with no points but under Bedford the Foxes managed to avoid relegation and finish 11th to stay in the top flight.

She signed a new two-year deal with Leicester in July but becomes the second WSL manager in the space of a week to lose their job after Hope Powell parted ways with Brighton on Monday.

In a press conference on Thursday, Bedford said she was not feeling under pressure from above.

"At the moment I feel very supported by the club in terms of being able to execute my role.

"The only pressure is the one you put on yourself. As a manager you want to go out every week knowing you've put the players in the best position," she said.

"I think in every game bar one this season I've walked off the pitch thinking there was not a lot more I could have done to change the result.".

Chelsea scored two goals in four minutes to end Manchester United's perfect start to the Women's Super League season at Leigh Sports Village.

United had won five consecutive games without conceding a single goal.

But one sloppy passage of play gave Sophie Ingle the opportunity to pick out Sam Kerr, who fired her shot into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Mary Earps.

United were opened up again when a long ball got behind the defence and found Kerr in space on the edge of the area and Lauren James coolly converted her simple pass.

United pulled one back through Alessia Russo's swept shot but Erin Cuthbert sealed the deal for Chelsea in injury time.

Chelsea move level on points with Arsenal at the top of the WSL while United drop to third.

Khadija Shaw is the "focal point" of the Manchester City team, said manager Gareth Taylor after the forward bagged her eighth goal of the Women's Super League campaign City's victory over Everton.

Julie Blakstad opened the scoring but it was a good piece of work from Shaw, who picked up a looped ball from Leila Ouahabi as Everton goalkeeper Emily Ramsey came out of her goal to meet Shaw, leaving an empty net for the Jamaican to square the ball to Blakstad who slotted home.

"She does so much more than score goals, the way she takes the hits as well as giving the hits out," said Taylor.

"She's also very strong and she's looking a lot fitter. She's found a rhythm now in knowing she's the focal point of the team."

Everton equalised from a corner when a scramble in the box saw former Toffees keeper Sandy MacIver try to punch the ball away, but it fell straight to Rikke Sevecke who powered a header into the back of the net.

But Shaw was there again to tap in the rebound and restore City's lead just after half-time when Laura Coombs fired an ambitious shot which smacked off the post.

This is City's fifth consecutive victory in the Women's Super League and moves them fourth, level on points with Manchester United in third.

Meanwhile, the loss was Everton's third consecutive home defeat of the season and leaves them seventh in the WSL.



Arsenal 2 (Maanum 46, Wienroither 73) Manchester United 3 (Toone 39, Turner 85, Russo 90+1)

Manchester United produced a stunning late comeback to end Arsenal's 100% start in the Women's Super League.

In front of more than 40,000 fans at Emirates Stadium, Arsenal trailed to an Ella Toone goal at half-time.

They equalised when Frida Maanum's shot took a deflection off Maya Le Tissier, before Laura Wienroither looked to have earned a 15th straight league win.

But headers by Millie Turner and Alessia Russo in the final five minutes completed a sensational turnaround.

It ends a 14-game league winning run for Arsenal, while United showed why they could be real title contenders under boss Marc Skinner.

Inspired by Toone from midfield, they secured a win which moved them level on 18 points with Arsenal and Chelsea at the top of the WSL.

Beth Mead: Arsenal & England forward out with anterior cruciate ligament injury..

England forward Beth Mead will be out for "an extended period" after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, her club Arsenal said.

Mead, 27, sustained the injury late in Saturday's Women's Super League loss to Manchester United at Emirates Stadium.

She will see a surgeon in the coming days, after which further details on timescales will be established.

Mead helped England win Euro 2022 last summer, earning the Golden Boot and the Player of the Tournament awards.

She was also voted BBC Women's Footballer of the Year and was runner-up in the 2022 Ballon d'Or.

"Everyone at the club will now be supporting Beth and working hard to get her back on the pitch as soon as possible," Arsenal said in a Arsenal statement.

The Gunners are second in the Women's Super League after playing seven games, with Mead having scored three goals and provided a team-high four assists.

Mead won her 50th cap for England during their 4-0 friendly win over Japan earlier this month and she has scored 29 goals for the Lionesses.

Reading moved seven points clear of the Women's Super League relegation zone as Amy Turner's first-half own goal gave them victory over Tottenham.

Turner nodded in during a mix-up with Becky Spencer after the keeper tipped a long-range shot from Tia Primmer on to the crossbar at the Madesjki Stadium.

Despite being beset by a flu outbreak, Reading controlled the game in the first half and would have extended their lead but for Spencer diverting captain Emma Harries' volley against the bar.

Tottenham looked sharper after the break, only to find themselves indebted to Spencer again when she produced another inspired save to deny Sanne Troelsgaard Nielsen from close range.

Reading visibly tired in the latter stages and had keeper Jacqueline Burns to thank for thwarting Drew Spence and tipping away a shot from substitute Nikola Karczewska.

Kelly Chambers' side hung on to climb one place to ninth with their first clean sheet and second win of the campaign, while Tottenham remain in seventh.

Forward Harries, a 20-year-old youth product captaining Reading side for the first time, was a persistent threat and had begun to celebrate converting from Primmer's left-wing cross when Spencer pulled off one of several early stops.

Spurs were considerably more dangerous after introducing Celin Bizet, Kerys Harrop and Chioma Ubogagu just before the 70-minute mark, but a third defeat in four WSL games puts them at risk of being cut adrift from the top six.

Liverpool claimed their first win since the opening day of the Women's Super League season as Ceri Holland and Katie Stengel gave the Reds victory at home to West Ham.

Holland capitalised on defensive uncertainty to prod in the opener before Stengel's expert finish doubled the hosts' lead after 20 minutes.

West Ham struggled to escape their own territory at times, with Liverpool dominating possession and chances to mark captain Niamh Fahey's 100th appearance for the club in style.

The Reds could have gone further ahead when Holland and Stengel went close in quick succession following a mistake by West Ham goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

Australia international Arnold atoned for her error with an acrobatic save to deny Holland a second and an alert stop to push Yana Daniels' late header over the crossbar.

Dagny Brynjarsdottir went closest for West Ham as her deflected strike was beaten away by home keeper Rachael Laws in the closing stages.

The victory moved Liverpool into ninth, a point above Brighton and Reading and eight clear of bottom side Leicester.

West Ham's second successive away defeat meant they remained below fifth-placed Aston Villa on goal difference.

Manchester City kept up the pressure on the top three in the Women's Super League with a comfortable home win over Brighton.

All three goals for the hosts came inside the first 26 minutes as Gareth Taylor's fourth-placed side made a blistering start at the Academy Stadium.

City were imperious in the first half with England forward Chloe Kelly at the heart of everything.

Kelly's in-swinging corner led to the opening goal as Brighton goalkeeper Megan Walsh fumbled a regulation take and the ball went in off Seagulls' midfielder Veatriki Sarri in the 11th minute.

Julie Blakstad doubled the lead eight minutes later with a superb diving header to divert Kelly's left-footed cross-cum-shot into the bottom corner.

Then, with Brighton reeling, Laura Coombs added a third on 26 minutes with a fierce strike from 20 yards out that gave Walsh no chance.

City could have added to their lead before the break and would have done were it not for a fine save from Walsh to deny Coombs in stoppage time, while Deyna Castellanos hit the post early in the second half.

Brighton were much improved after the restart, though, and were rewarded for their efforts by Lee Geum-min's scrambled consolation in the final minute.
