Tottenham forward Kit Graham suffers second ACL injury..shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Kit-Graham.jpgTottenham forward Kit Graham is set to miss the entire season after suffering her second anterior cruciate ligament injury in just over two years. The 28-year-old injured the ACL in her left knee in pre-season training. In November 2022 she injured an ACL in a Women's Super League match against West Ham that kept her out until March 2023. "Kit will commence her rehabilitation with our medical staff and is expected to be out for the remainder of the season," the club said. She played 18 league games for Spurs last term and helped her side reach the FA Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United. The 2024-25 WSL season kicks off on 20 September, with Spurs' first game coming two days later at home to Crystal Palace.

Chelsea sign Montpellier defender Maelys Mpome until 2028..shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Olympique-Lyonnais-v-Montpellier-HSC-Coupe-de-France-OL-Training-Center.jpgWomen's Super League champions Chelsea have signed defender Maelys Mpome from Montpellier on a deal until 2028. The 21-year-old is a French youth international and predominately plays as a centre-back. She joined Montpellier - where Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor herself spent four years as a player - in 2020 and made 42 appearances for the French top-tier side, scoring three goals. Mpome said becoming a Chelsea player is "just like living a dream to join such a big club". Blues general manager Paul Green said Mpome has "good experience for her age" thanks to her development at Montpellier. "She is a tall and athletic defender whose profile we believe will suit the WSL," he added. Chelsea begin their WSL title defence against Aston Villa on 20th September at 7pm, live on the BBC.

Men's game not ready for female manager - Emma Hayes..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/28/21/75952387-0-image-a-38_1695932426336.jpgUnited States boss Emma Hayes says the men's game is not ready to appoint female managers. Hannah Dingley was appointed Forest Green Rovers caretaker manager in 2023 but a woman has never been permanently appointed manager of a men's team in the top five tiers of English football. Hayes, 47, won seven Women's Super League titles as Chelsea's head coach - including a fifth in succession in 2024 - before departing for the USA job at the end of last season. Asked what needs to be done for female coaches to be appointed head coach of a men's team, Hayes told the Today programme: "I think you need to get more owners in to ask them that question, because they're the people you have to ask that question to. I'm not the one in charge of that." Asked whether club owners are "ready for that", Hayes said: "Yeah, of course they're not, otherwise it would have happened by now. "I've said this a million times over – you can find a female pilot, a female doctor, a female lawyer, a female banker, but you can't find a female coach working in the men's game, leading men. It just shows you how much work there is to be done." Hayes and England women's boss Sarina Wiegman were both nominated for the 2024 Ballon d'Or women's coach of the year award this week, alongside Filipa Patao and Hayes' Chelsea successor Sonia Bompastor and male colleagues Arthur Elias and Jonatan Giraldez. The men's coach of the year award nominee list, which included the likes of Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, did not include any female coaches. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/28/21/75952319-0-image-a-36_1695932133415.jpgHayes said she does not think male players would have a problem with having a female manager in charge, as long as the coach is the best person available. Hayes added she manages about "25 men every day" but they're "just the staff I work with". Speaking in 2023, Wiegman said it was a "matter of time" before a men's team was managed by a woman. "I think it will happen, I'm not sure how long it will take but I think it would be good," Wiegman said.

Chelsea Women stop autographs at games over safety concerns..by Adam Millington, BBC Sport journalistshekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/International-Friendly-Gotham-FC-v-Chelsea-FC-Red-Bull-Arena.jpgChelsea Women players will stop giving autographs and photos at their Kingsmeadow ground, with the club saying that doing so is "no longer safe or sustainable". The London club say a fan advisory board and the women's side's supporters' group have reviewed the decision and given their support. Increased attendances across the women's game have made it less feasible for players to be able to stop at the end of fixtures. The supporters' group said it was a "tough decision" but an "essential one". "There were occasions last season that led to concerns about the safety and security of both supporters and players, largely due to the rising numbers who are seeking signatures and selfies before and after games," Chelsea said. shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Bristol-City-v-Chelsea-FC-Barclays-Women%C2%B4s-Super-League.jpgEngland's players now do a lap around the pitch after matches to allow fans to show their appreciation and - although there is no directive preventing Lionesses stopping for supporters - it is not always realistic for players to be able to meet the demands of larger crowds. With their players no longer interacting after games, Chelsea say they will instead be hosting organised opportunities for meetings to occur away from matches. Responding to the decision, the Chelsea Women Supporters Group posted on X: "We understand some fans will be disappointed with the changes. "Matchdays have become unsafe inside and outside the stadium and players are getting unnecessary abuse if they don't stop." Kingsmeadow, which was formerly the home of men's club AFC Wimbledon, has a capacity of nearly 5,000. Chelsea also play a number of games at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City sign goalkeeper Katie Startup on two-year deal from Brighton..shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Manchester-City-v-West-Ham-United-Barclays-Women%C2%B4s-Super-League.jpgManchester City have signed goalkeeper Katie Startup from Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year contract until the summer of 2026. The 25-year-old spent the second half of last season at City on an emergency loan from the Seagulls. Startup began her career at Charlton Athletic in 2017 and joined Brighton three years later. She made her debut for the club during the 2021-22 season following short-term loans to Charlton and Liverpool. On returning to City, Startup said she was "really excited" to be back, and for longer this time. "I really enjoyed my time here and I felt really welcome, valued and I settled into the team well," she said. City head coach Gareth Taylor said Startup's talent "was clear to see" during her six-week loan spell. He added: "She has the right attitude and mindset to develop herself and help us compete for all honours." City, who finished runners-up to Chelsea in the Women's Super League last season, begin the new campaign away to Arsenal on Sunday 22nd September at 12.30pm.

Newcastle United Women sign Championship Golden Glove winner from rivals Sunderland..by Wilf Frithshekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Charlton-Athletic-v-Sunderland-Womens-Championship-The-Valley.jpgNewcastle United sign Barclays Women’s Championship Golden Glove winner and Sunderland Player of the Season Claudia Moan. The 25-year-old goalkeeper kept ten clean sheets as Sunderland finished third in a very tight promotion race last season, earning league and club awards for her efforts. Moan told newcastleunitedfc.com: “I am delighted to be joining Newcastle United, who have shown in the past two seasons that they are a very ambitious club. “The set-up at the club is fantastic which is something I know will help me settle in very quickly. “I will give everything I possibly can to the team and the fans, who I know give incredible support to the club. I can’t wait to get started next week.” Manager Becky Langley added: “Claudia is a top goalkeeper and I worked with her previously when we won the league together at Northumbria University. “Her stats from last season speak for themselves. The fact she won the Golden Glove and Player of the Season awards is absolutely fantastic when you look at the quality of players she was up against in that league. We’re really excited to see her join the club.”

Two-time World Cup winner Alex Morgan announces retirement..Adam Millington, BBC Sport journalisti.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2020/12/21/15/37107884-9075843-image-a-41_1608563579945.jpgAlex Morgan, who has won two Women's World Cups and an Olympic gold medal with the United States, has announced her retirement from professional football. Morgan, 35, who confirmed her decision to retire in a video posted to social media on Thursday,, external also said she is pregnant with her second child. The striker, who became one of the most famous female players in the world, will play her final professional match on Sunday when her club side San Diego Wave take on North Carolina Courage. In 2022, she was part of the USA side which secured a landmark equal pay deal after all members of the squad filed a lawsuit. Morgan said she is "proud" to have played a part in making an "irreversible" impact on the game for the next generation of female footballers. "It has been a long time coming and this decision [to retire] wasn’t easy," she said. "But at the beginning of 2024 I felt in my heart and soul that this would be the last season that I would play soccer." Morgan gave birth to her daughter, Charlie, in May 2020 and joined Women's Super League side Tottenham later that year, although she only played four matches in London before returning to the US. She lifted the 2015 and 2019 World Cups with her country, won a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games and a bronze at Tokyo 2020. Morgan said she has "so much clarity" about deciding to retire. "Soccer has been a part of me for 30 years and was one of the first things that I ever loved. "I gave everything to this sport and what I got in return was more than I could ever have dreamed of." Former England defender Casey Stoney, who was Morgan's manager at the Wave until she was sacked in June, said "the game loses a great" with her retirement. Stoney posted on X:, external "The most professional athlete I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. You drove everyone around you to be better and challenged the status quo on a daily basis. Thank you for everything you have given our game." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2021/01/06/10/37666686-9117967-The_USA_forward_has_said_that_she_and_family_are_both_in_good_sp-a-19_1609929958374.jpg Alex Morgan with husband Servando Carrasco and daughter Charlie

Ex-Liverpool keeper Rylee Foster offered Everton deal..by Emma Sanders, Senior Women's Football Reportershekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Rylee-Foster.jpgFormer Liverpool goalkeeper Rylee Foster has been offered a short-term contract by Everton to join this summer. Canadian Foster, 26, had been on trial with the Toffees since leaving New Zealand club Wellington Phoenix. She spent three years at Liverpool between 2020-2023 but was in a life-threatening car accident which forced her to have emergency spinal surgery to mend seven neck fractures. Foster was forced to wear a halo device to keep her neck immobilised and doctors said it was unlikely she would ever play football again. However, she returned to action last season, making 19 appearances at Wellington Phoenix before leaving the club in July. Everton have already signed former Liverpool winger Melissa Lawley this summer - one of six incomings.

Lauren Smith appointed England Women’s U-19 head coach..by Wilf Frithshekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Everton-FC-v-Bristol-City-Barclays-Women%C2%B4s-Super-League.jpgLauren Smith becomes the new head coach of England Women’s Under-19s, following the end of her three-year spell in charge at Bristol City. A UEFA Pro Licence holder, Smith earlier worked as assistant coach at Spurs and for Wales including over three years with their U-17s and U-19s squads. Smith told englandfootball.com: “It’s a huge honour to be joining The FA. There’s never been a more exciting time to join the England pathway with more and more players transitioning through to the senior team. Nurturing young talent has always been one of my favourite elements of coaching and I feel incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to guide the next generation on their journeys to becoming Lionesses. It’s going to be a really exciting season with the ambition of qualifying for another European finals. I’m grateful to Kay Cossington for the opportunity and can’t wait to meet the players and staff.” England women technical director Kay Cossington said: “We are so pleased to confirm Lauren as the new head coach of the WU19s. Her record and experience in player development speaks for itself. She knows exactly what it takes to get young players performing under pressure to the best of their abilities. We are thrilled to be able to appoint a head coach with invaluable experience in both the Barclays Women’s Super League and international football. I’m sure her arrival will give an instant positive boost at the start of what promises to be another exciting season for our Young Lionesses.” John Griffiths, who was interim head coach of the WU19s last season and secured a semi-final finish at the EURO finals held in Lithuania, will resume his role as assistant coach of the age group. The 2024/25 season will see Smith’s side bid for a place in the 2025 UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship finals which will be held in Poland next summer. Qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will also be up for grabs as part of the tournament.

Man Utd Women boss Marc Skinner boss hits back at myths over training facilities..By Megan FeringaFootball Writeri2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31961183.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_GettyImages-1958032450.jpgMarc Skinner claimed criticism of training facilities used by Manchester United Women this summer “could not be further from the truth”, stressing that the team's move is the "best thing that could have happened". United came under fierce censure in the summer after reports emerged of the women’s team being ejected from their £11 billion, state-of-the-art training facilities and moved into portacabins for the upcoming season to accommodate the men’s senior team, whose facilities at the Carrington Training Complex are undergoing a £50million renovation. Skinner’s squad spent the summer training at the Football Association (FA) headquarters, St. George’s Park, before travelling to Marbella for a pre-season camp. And Skinner, 41, has vociferously defended the training ground situation ahead of the new season. “We need to get people in to come and see us and speak to us. What is reported on the outside honestly could not be further from the truth. It really couldn’t,” said Skinner. “Everyone in our club has moved to encompass the growth of Carrington. It wasn’t ready for Manchester United Women four years ago. The club did fantastically well to spend on the new facility to get new pitches. When we moved to Carrington, it took time. "The training pitches that we will have every day are better than St George’s Park. You would eat your breakfast off our pitches - they are incredible. That is a non-negotiable.” Skinner took particular umbrage with the diction used around the women’s team’s move. “[People claimed] ‘we’re training in barracks’, we’re not training in barracks,” said Skinner. “We are training in a facility that has been built on site for our players. It has all been branded up today and the girls will move into it tomorrow. “From my perspective, everything is growing from there. We have better gym access and to the pool for recovery on site. Dan Ashworth and Omar Berrada have been fantastic and have both come in with real energy to speak to the group. They genuinely love women’s football and have a real burning ambition for it to be in the forefront of their direction. That will only improve.” Sporting director Ashworth insisted that United's women's team would be an "important part" of his remit upon officially beginning his role, adding that the club are intent on building on the club's maiden Women's FA Cup triumph. Ashworth's assurances arrived shortly after new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, now fully in charge of football operations at the club, generated uproar upon admitting that the plan for the women's team was "to be confirmed", adding that the men's first team took priority. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article33108788.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_GettyImages-2153224454.jpgSkinner believes the proximity of the women's, men's and academy teams will reap a valuable influence to club culture. The former Birmingham City manager shared a story of United men’s captain Bruno Fernandes coming to watch a women’s game after completing his training sessions. Skinner said: “We played Blackburn in a pre-season friendly and in the car park, Bruno Fernandes walks past. They trained right in front of us while we ate so we got to see them as well. He came back, asked if we had a game then he came to watch the second half after he had showered and got changed. He spoke to all the players. “The best thing that could have happened was the changing of the facilities because now we are constantly walking past each other and speaking. Me and Erik [ten Hag] will speak more because we see each other more. It’s been great. "I didn’t know what it would be like at first but knowing we’re not downgrading any facilities – we’ve actually had an upgrade – and we would be seeing all of the teams, it feels like one club again. That’s a really strong movement I think we needed and we’ve got it now. England midfielder Grace Clinton, who was on loan with Tottenham Hotspur last season but is set to play a crucial role in Skinner’s side this season, echoed her manager’s sentiments. “We're not in portable buildings,” she said. “From my experience so far in preseason, I've not been in a portable building, so I can't really speak on that. Obviously, there's a bit of moving around in places because we're trying to fit the academy, the women and the men in, but for me, so far, everything has been up to par, the gym, changing rooms.”

Rehanne Skinner says short-term contracts an issue in WSL..by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporterichef.bbci.co.uk/news/1024/cpsprodpb/4B7A/production/_131322391_rehanneskinner3.jpgWest Ham manager Rehanne Skinner says short-term contracts in the Women's Super League is an "issue" that needs addressing. The club have lost seven players on permanent transfers this summer, all of whom were regular members of the first-team squad. Among them were Australia goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, Japan internationals Risa Shimizu and Honoka Hayashi and former vice-captain Hawa Cissoko - all were on two-year deals which expired. It meant the club did not receive transfer fees and lost some of their best players, having to work hard on recruitment this summer to replace them. "It's a conversation I had with the club - something we needed to iron out and put in place. Short-term contracts have been an issue for sustainability," said Skinner. "We know the turnover has been quite high in the club previously. I'm trying to support the management of that and even that out a lot better - for the fans and the sustainability of the team. "[It's about] having a better structure around contract lengths and for when people are coming out of their contracts too." Skinner says there's a collective need to be "good in a business sense" to get the most out of talent developed at West Ham. "There's good, quality players that have gone through the club," she added. "We want to make sure that everything the club has invested in them, we can get a return on [financially] as well as what the players are offering us while at the club. "We need to look at both sides of that and it's something that has to be factored in moving forward." This summer, West Ham have signed five players on three-year deals and Skinner says she hopes the club can create "stability" for fans going forward. "Last season we were doing a lot of work on trying to put foundations in place. We appreciate they have seen a lot of change," she said. "We want to create that stability this year so they really have something to root for. I think we showed our identity last year and what we’re trying to achieve."

Barcelona reject Arsenal's world-record Keira Walsh bid..by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women's football news reportericdn.justarsenal.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/keira-walsh-1200x800.jpegArsenal had a world-record bid for England midfielder Keira Walsh turned down late in the Women's Super League transfer window. The 27-year-old has a year remaining on her contract at Barcelona but the European champions were not willing to sell her. It has been reported in Spanish media that Arsenal's bid was worth £930,000. Barcelona would have had until Monday to find a replacement as that is when the transfer window for Spain's Liga F closes. The WSL window closed at 23:00 BST on Friday. Walsh has already informed Barca that she does not intend to renew her contract next summer so is likely to leave on a free transfer, unless they persuade her otherwise. The England international was signed by Barcelona in 2022 for a then-world record fee of £400,000 from Manchester City. Zambia's Racheal Kundananji has since become the most expensive player, joining Bay FC from Madrid CFF in a deal worth £685,000 in February. Walsh has won back-to-back league and European titles with Barcelona. Coach Pere Romeu told reporters, external on Thursday: "There's no case for Keira leaving. She's been with us throughout pre-season and is a key player for us. "She totally gets our style of play, is super professional, and has shown an amazing attitude and commitment from day one. So, we're definitely counting on her this season." Walsh started Barca's opening home game of the season on Friday, claiming an assist in a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad.
