Wales and Chelsea's Sophie Ingle suffers serious knee injury..shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/ophie-ingle.jpgWales and Chelsea midfielder Sophie Ingle faces an extended stay on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury. Ingle damaged her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Chelsea's pre-season win over Feyenoord on 7th September. Chelsea confirmed the injury, saying: "Following assessment by the club’s medical team and a knee specialist, Sophie will soon undergo surgery before beginning a period of rehabilitation at the club." Ingle will miss Wales' crucial Women's European Championship 2025 qualifying play-off first-round double-header against Slovakia in October. The 33-year-old will also sit out a large chunk of Chelsea's season, with their opening Women's Super League (WSL) game at home against Aston Villa this Friday. Manager Sonia Bompastor had said after Chelsea's 9-0 win over Feyenoord: "Sophie [Ingle], it was her knee, she got kicked in the beginning of the second half." Ingle, who can also slot into defence, has won 139 Wales caps since making her senior international debut in a 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat by Azerbaijan in 2009, and first captained her country in 2015. Rhian Wilkinson's side are away in the first leg to Slovakia on Friday, 25th October before hosting them in the second leg at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, 29 October as they bid to reach the 2025 finals in Switzerland. The second round of the play-offs will be played on 27th November and 3rd December, with either Georgia or the Republic of Ireland awaiting Wales if they progress. Wales, who are ranked 31st in the world, are seeking a first major tournament appearance. Ingle has played more WSL games than any other footballer, having passed the previous record mark of 183 in November 2023. She began her career at Vale Wanderers in Dinas Powys and Cardiff City Ladies before moving to Chelsea, then had spells at Bristol Academy and Liverpool before returning to Chelsea in 2018.

Man Utd's 'big-time goalkeeper' with big boots to fill..by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporterassets.manutd.com/AssetPicker/images/0/0/19/10/1247808/Phallon_Tullis_Joyce_Set01_ManUtd_682_copy1695301179061_large.jpgPhallon Tullis-Joyce has big boots to fill at Manchester United. England goalkeeper Mary Earps had held the position as number one since 2019 before moving to Paris St-Germain in the summer. During her time at United, Earps was voted the Best Fifa Women's Goalkeeper twice, having won the European Championship with England and the Women's Super League (WSL) Golden Glove in 2023. Her impact was so great that Earps became the first female footballer to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds and there is a mosaic of her outside Old Trafford. But there is a new number one at United, and manager Marc Skinner says Tullis-Joyce, who was signed in 2023, is ready to step up. "Phallon is the best shot-stopper I have ever worked with in my life," said Skinner. "She is an incredible footballer, an incredibly intelligent human and I’m really looking forward to showing you what she can do for this team. "She is a big-time goalkeeper. That’s why I brought her."

'I did it my way' - Toni Duggan announces retirement..by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporterilarge.lisimg.com/image/26455466/1089full-toni-duggan.jpgFormer England forward Toni Duggan says her career has been "more than I could ever have dreamed of" as she announces her retirement from football. The 33-year-old has enjoyed an incredible career spanning 17 years, amassing 79 caps for her country, as well as playing for some of the world's biggest clubs. She has played in World Cup semi-finals, Champions League finals and the biggest cup finals in the domestic game. Football is all she has ever known. "I saw an old interview. I was 27 and playing in Spain at the time. They asked 'what is your biggest fear?' - and I said 'retirement'," Duggan told BBC Sport. "It is weird now, sitting here, and today is the day. I’ve been so lucky with the career I’ve had and I’ve loved every single minute. "I just think it’s made me the person I am. I was a little girl who grew up on the streets of Liverpool who wanted to play football. I wanted to be accepted. "We had to fight for everything we wanted but when I look back, the journey has just been more than I could ever have dreamed of. "To everyone who has played their part – family, friends, coaches and everyone involved – thank you." It is a moment many footballers fear, and while Duggan has no immediate plans, she knows she wants to stay in the game. Retirement has given Duggan a chance to reflect on her achievements and what has made her most proud. "I always knew I wanted to play football. [People] said I couldn’t because it wasn’t professional - but I wanted to be a footballer," she added. "I have been myself all along - that’s what makes me most proud. I was always a winner and wanted to win from the first day I kicked a ball. "To have those trophies and memories is nice. But the fact I can walk away and say I did it my way, had fun, competed in everything and had great support, just gives me memories to last forever." i.pinimg.com/736x/b6/ba/aa/b6baaab588d2756697da5c3db0763b45.jpgDuggan's journey began at Everton when she broke into the first team as a 16-year-old, and she would go on to represent Manchester City, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, before returning to Merseyside to finish her career. She was a key player for England and says it was like "the Lionesses were born" after the 2015 Women's World Cup, when they won bronze. "Honestly, playing for England were the best days of my life. I just loved it. I loved travelling with the team and having the laughs we had," said Duggan. "I think I was [aware of my profile]. It grew. The catalyst for it was the Women’s World Cup in Canada. We’ve never really looked back since. "I was so proud to be part of that team. We didn’t come away with the gold medal but we definitely changed the perception of women’s football." Since then, investment has grown and the Lionesses have delivered, winning Euro 2022 and reaching the Women's World Cup final in 2023. Duggan is proud her generation were "a part of all the firsts". "There is something special and nice about doing the 'firsts'. Of course, we would have loved those opportunities, but I don’t look back with any regrets," she said. "The first time Nike decided to do a women’s football kit, the first time we sold out Wembley Stadium, the first time women played at Anfield and Goodison Park, the first time England won a bronze medal at a Women’s World Cup. "There will be kids in the future who have much better experiences than I did. But that’s the way the world works - and hopefully one of those kids can be [my daughter] Luella." Duggan became one of the first high-profile English players to become a mother in March 2023, and received maternity pay from Everton. She says returning from pregnancy to play in the Women's Super League (WSL) for a year was one of her proudest moments. "Just coming back from it all, going through pregnancy and coming back to being an elite footballer was difficult - but incredible as well," said Duggan. "To have Luella in the stands with me last year – she was only young and won’t remember it, but I certainly will. It was a great achievement and one I’m proud of." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/1024/cpsprodpb/1E0C/production/_103729670_tony_dugan_getty.jpgDuggan moved to Barcelona in 2017 and helped them reach the Women's Champions League final, scoring 20 goals in 51 appearances before joining Atletico Madrid. English players have now followed in her footsteps, moving abroad to develop their careers, and Duggan believes she helped shine a spotlight on the experience. "We won every trophy domestically and I felt like I had done it all [at Manchester City]. I just wanted a new challenge," said Duggan. "I didn’t sit there as a kid dreaming of playing for Barcelona, because, if I'm honest, I didn’t know they had a women’s team. "When the interest came, I thought 'what an opportunity that is' and I just couldn’t turn it down. There were many others who did the same. "But my move was helped by the fact it was Barcelona and it was right on top of Manchester City’s success. It drew attention." As she ends her football career, having achieved so much, Duggan's final message is simple. "Let’s not become divas or untouchables. There is something special about the women’s game. We have always been real," she said. "On another day, our generation was fighting for all of this. Keep going. The sky is the limit. The game is in a great place. Keep pushing it on." i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article6777451.ece/ALTERNATES/s1227b/3119283.jpg

Friday 20th September 2024 - Women's Super League - Kingsmeadow - Attendance: 4,337

Match report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporter at KingsmeadowSonia Bompastor led Chelsea to victory in her first Women's Super League match as manager as they narrowly beat Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow. A stunning first-half strike from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd was enough for three points as the Swede cut inside and struck the ball perfectly into the far corner. But Chelsea were hanging on by a thread in stoppage time as goalkeeper Hannah Hampton first clawed away Rachel Daly's header, before tipping an effort from her opposite number Sabrina D'Angelo over the crossbar. It was a dramatic end to the WSL's opening match which marked Bompastor's arrival and a new era at Chelsea. The defending champions are seeking a sixth WSL title in a row - but a first without influential former manager Emma Hayes. Banners were on display around Kingsmeadow marking Bompastor's "revolution" and there were new faces in the Frenchwoman's starting XI, including a debut for England defender Lucy Bronze. It was also a first WSL match in charge for new Villa boss Robert de Pauw and he put his stamp on the team, with them showing plenty of promise in London. Villa debutant Missy Bo Kearns missed a huge chance early on when she sent fellow summer signing Chasity Grant's cross sailing over the bar and Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton had to be alert on occasions in the second half. However, Chelsea's quality ultimately shone through, with Kaneryd's effort a fine goal to seal victory, marking a superb start to the Bompastor era. "Today maybe we should have been more efficient and that would change the game. Winning is important for sure," said Bompastor afterwards. "We still have to work on some bits. I'm just happy with the three points, it's always good to start with a win."

Saturday 21st September 2024 - Women's Super League - Result
Manchester United 3 (Geyse 28, Galton 45+3, Clinton 53) West Ham United 0
Match report by Adam Millington, BBC Sport journalist at Old TraffordManchester United began their Women's Super League season with a composed victory over West Ham at Old Trafford. The hosts, looking to embark on an improved campaign after finishing fifth last year, were impressive on Saturday and produced fluid and creative final-third play from the beginning. They did not, however, require anything special to provide the opening goal. West Ham's Camilla Saez failed to see out the ball at the byeline, Geyse snatched it from her feet and - after an initial moment of hesitation - powered it past Kinga Szemik. The Red Devils' lead was deserved and they continued to assert their dominance with neat moves in the final third, leading to winger Leah Galton netting their second with a lovely curling effort after a good solo run into the middle. United had other chances to beat Szemik, too. Elisabeth Terland had an effort cleared off the line, Galton hit the crossbar and an acrobatic Geyse effort also struck the frame of the goal. Their control continued after the restart and another lapse of concentration in defence from West Ham left Grace Clinton completely unmarked to head home a Lisa Naalsund delivery. Three relatively early goals assured victory for the hosts but, although they continued to frustrate West Ham, they couldn't further extend their advantage. The teams paid tribute to Ella Toone's father, who passed away earlier this month, with a minute's applause before the game, with manager Marc Skinner saying it was "the least we could do". Players also did Toone's trademark celebration after United scored, in his memory. "There was just no question of anything else," said the Red Devils manager. "Not only was he a huge Manchester United fan but he has been a huge part of a player who is an exemplary character for this club and somebody who will go down in history for this club. "I thought she was brave beyond belief today. It's a horrible thing to happen but we're here to show love, care and support for an iconic player for Manchester United." i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32157763.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-2011114855.jpg

Match report by Marissa Thomas, BBC Sport journalistKiko Seike scored a hat-trick on her Women's Super League debut as Brighton thrashed Everton in their opening game of the campaign. The Japan international struck after 29 minutes, nicking the ball off Elise Stenevik and launching a long-range lob into the top corner. Seike was in acres of space for her second goal 11 minutes into the second half, stooping to direct a header on target from Poppy Pattinson's cross. Everton then conceded a 68th-minute penalty when Maria Thorisdottir's shot from the edge of the box struck the arm of defender Sara Holmgaard. Fran Kirby also marked her Brighton debut with a goal, slotting into the bottom corner from the penalty spot with goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan going the other way. Seike completed her hat-trick seven minutes later, driving through the Everton defence and firing a wicked strike past Brosnan, who was powerless to stop it despite her best efforts. "It’s that old cliché of one game at a time but you still have to enjoy those wins," said boss Dario Vidosic after an impressive showing in his first WSL game in charge. "The message was simple. Just be brave, play our football. "Football is a funny sport. You can be the best team and lose so we were always more focused on just having a positive performance. When you do that, you get rewards and the ladies got that today. I’m really pleased for them." Everton's afternoon went from bad to worse when they played the closing stages with 10 players as, having used all their substitutes, their Italian midfielder Aurora Galli went down clutching her knee and was taken off in the 87th minute. After the game boss Brian Sorensen said: "She’s on crutches. It looked like one of the bad ones unfortunately. I think it just sums up the day. "It’s probably too early to go to hospital for a scan because of the swelling so they won’t be able to see anything. But yeah, it doesn’t look good, that’s for sure."

Arsenal 2 (Maanum 8, Mead 81) Manchester City 2 (Miedema 42, Park 58)
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Arsenal-v-Manchester-City-Barclays-Womens-Super-League.jpg Vivianne Miedema scores for Manchester City against Arsenal.
Match report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporter at Emirates StadiumVivianne Miedema scored on her return to Emirates Stadium as Manchester City drew with former club Arsenal in their Women's Super League opener. A brilliant long-range effort from England international Jess Park looked to have given City the victory before Arsenal substitute Beth Mead volleyed in a late equaliser. Netherlands international Miedema, who was allowed to leave Arsenal when her contract expired this summer, was fortunate her strike took a heavy deflection off defender Laia Codina and she did not celebrate her goal. "I'm not really a big celebration person anyway," Miedema told Sky Sports after the game. "You saw a bit of emotion but that's normal. Besides that, be respectful to the [Arsenal] fans that supported me for the last seven years as well. "Me coming back here today was a big thing. I'm really happy with the reception I got from the Arsenal fans," she added. "The most important thing today was to start the season well with the new team. It's always nice to get off that zero again and get a goal." Frida Maanum had earlier struck powerfully past City's new goalkeeper Ayaka Yamas**ta from inside the box as Arsenal got off to the perfect start in London. Jonas Eidevall's side dominated large spells and created the better chances - they should have been 2-0 up when striker Stina Blackstenius raced through one-on-one with debutant Yamas**ta, but the City goalkeeper did well to block her effort. Further chances came and went for Arsenal and they were almost punished by City before Mead reacted quickly when Rosa Kafaji's effort struck the post. City top-scorer Khadija Shaw, returned and forced goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger into a smart save in the second half, while Miedema also had efforts parried away late on. In the end, they had to settle for a draw after a pulsating encounter between two sides who hope to have their hands on the WSL trophy at the end of the season. shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Barclays-Womens-Super-League-Arsenal-v-Manchester-City-Emirates-Stadium.jpgLeila Ouahabi (Manchester City) clears the ball from the path of Caitlin Foord (Arsenal).

Liverpool 1 (Haug 45) Leicester City 1 (Rantala 53)
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Liverpool-v-Leicester-City-Barclays-Womens-Super-League.jpg Olivia Smith of Liverpool is challenged by Julie Thibaud of Leicester City.
Match report by PA MediaLiverpool were left frustrated in their opening game of the Women's Super League after a determined Leicester fought back to earn a point. Sophie Roman Haug, Liverpool's top scorer last season, gave the Reds a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time. But Leicester, under the guidance of new manager Amandine Miquel, were resilient, organised and refused lie down. The Foxes equalised eight minutes after the break with a clinical strike from Jutta Rantala. Liverpool had started on the front foot in their first match at St Helens' Totally Wicked Stadium, their home for the majority of the 2024-25 campaign. Foxes goalkeeper Lize Kop tipped a fine shot from Ceri Holland over the bar then saved well from Marie Hobinger. Liverpool opened the scoring when Norway forward Haug peeled away from Sophie Howard at a corner and headed in Hobinger's delivery at the back post. However, Matt Beard's side were caught napping when Taylor Hinds failed to cut out Yuka Momiki's cross-field pass to Rantala and the Finnish striker angled a crisp low finish beyond Rachael Laws. Liverpool, who did the double over Leicester in the WSL last season, looked the most likely side to win it in the remainder of the contest and Gemma Bonner headed over from a good position. However, the Reds breathed a sigh of relief when the flag was raised for offside after Ruby Mace headed in late on.

Tottenham Hotspur 4 (Raso 19, Naz 53, Spence 76, Ahatinen 88) Crystal Palace 0 (Aspin sent off 90+4)
shekicks.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Womens-Super-League-Tottenham-Hotspur-v-Crystal-Palace-Brisbane-Road.jpg Molly Bartrip (Tottenham Hotspur) and Ashleigh Weerden (Crystal Palace) fight for the ball.
Match report by Sam Drury, BBC Sport journalistA superb debut goal for Hayley Raso helped Tottenham to a thumping win over Women's Super League newcomers Crystal Palace. The Australian, who joined from Real Madrid in the summer, opened the scoring before second-half goals from Jess Naz, Drew Spence and Olga Ahtinen rounded off a convincing victory for Robert Vilahamn's side. Palace ended their first ever WSL game with 10 as substitute Brooke Aspin was sent off for two bookings in a matter of seconds in stoppage time. Tottenham started brightly with Raso, who previously enjoyed spells at Everton and Manchester City, at the heart of everything. The 30-year-old's was a goal to remember as she collected the ball midway inside the Palace half, surrounded by three defenders, but jinked her way into the box and rolled a pinpoint finish into the far corner. Laura Kaminski's visitors absorbed that blow and grew into the game as the half went on, albeit without managing to create any chances of note. Raso should have doubled Spurs' lead just before the break but, after being left unmarked 10 yards out, her shot was too close to Shae Yanez in the Palace goal. It was one of 13 saves in a hugely impressive performance from Yanez, one of seven debutants in the starting XI, but she was helpless to resist Tottenham's second-half onslaught. Naz ran onto Spence's no-look pass to finish at the second attempt soon after the break and with the away side looking increasingly tired, Spurs pressed on relentlessly. Spence made it three with a clinical near-post finish after Bethany England's clever flick found her on the edge of the box and Ahtinen came off the bench to rifle an unstoppable strike into the top corner from 20 yards. Only Yanez's sharp reflexes prevented matters getting worse for Palace but with frustration building Aspin, on loan from Chelsea, angrily kicked the ball away after the referee adjudged she had tripped Spurs' Anna Csiki. A yellow card for each offence saw Aspin shown the red to end a difficult first day in the top flight for the visitors.

FA Cup tie abandoned after goalkeeper has medical emergency..upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/32/Women%27s_FA_Cup.png/220px-Women%27s_FA_Cup.pngThe Women’s FA Cup tie between Wythenshawe FC and Salford City Lionesses was abandoned after a player was involved in a medical emergency. The second round qualifying tie - at Wythenshawe's Hollyhedge Park ground - was stopped in the 34th minute after Salford goalkeeper Grace Pomfret went down off the ball in "very visible distress". The club said Pomfret was treated by medical staff and was conscious as she was helped from the pitch before paramedics took her to hospital. "Grace is now in a stable condition and being looked after in hospital, and has our full support and best wishes in her recovery," the club posted on X. The cause of Pomfret's collapse has not been specified but it was decided to abandon the match. A new date for the tie has yet to be confirmed. "At Salford, we know that the welfare of the people is the highest law and as a family of players and staff it was noted the environment was too upsetting to continue," the club said.

WSL agrees new £45m sponsorship deal with Barclays..Emma Sanders, BBC Sport women’s football news reporterA new three-year agreement has been reached with Barclays to remain the title sponsor of the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship. The deal is understood to be in the region of £15m a year, including investment and marketing, double the previous arrangement which runs out at the end of this season. It is the first major contract secured by the WSL’s new takeover company, Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL). Barclays became the title sponsors in 2019 and the renewal is said to be the biggest deal in women’s domestic football. There has been a continual increase in viewing figures and attendances across the WSL over the past few years. WPLL chief executive Nikki Doucet said: "Barclays has been a leading light when it comes to supporting women’s football and they become a founding partner for WPLL as we embark on a transformational journey to grow the game. "This record multi-year investment demonstrates long-term commitment and is important because it provides positive endorsement and increased support for what we are trying to accomplish." Barclays has also extended its partnership with the Premier League, agreeing a new four-year deal. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/4f/FA_Women%27s_Super_League.png/155px-FA_Women%27s_Super_League.png

Manchester City 3 (Kelly 2, Shaw 31, 65 pen) Paris 0 - agg: 8-0
Match report by Emily Salley, BBC Sport journalist at Joie StadiumKhadija Shaw scored twice as Manchester City booked their place in the Women's Champions League group stage with an 8-0 aggregate win against Paris FC. After a resounding 5-0 first-leg victory in the French capital last week, City added three more and kept another clean sheet at Joie Stadium on Thursday. It was the first time Gareth Taylor's side have reached the group stage since the 2020-21 season when they fell to Barcelona in the quarter-finals. City made a lighting-fast start when Chloe Kelly tapped home in the second minute after visiting goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, under pressure from Shaw, played the ball straight to the feet of the England forward. The pair linked up again for City's second in the 31st minute, with Kelly collecting the ball from Laura Blindkilde Brown before fizzing it across the face of goal for Shaw to turn in easily. Having missed the first leg in Paris after her club failed to file a visa application, the Jamaican striker doubled her goal tally in the 65th minute when she converted from the penalty spot after being bundled over in the box. With an unassailable lead, Taylor opted to make changes and rest players before a tough test against early Women's Super League leaders Brighton on Sunday - replacing captain Alex Greenwood with Kerstin Casparij in the 35th minute. Paris FC looked stronger after the break, but they failed to better an effort from Clara Mateo on the stroke of half-time that forced Khiara Keating to parry the ball off the crossbar. After Shaw's second, the WSL side closed out the game in dominant fashion with Kelly and Aoba Fujino coming close with strikes that drifted just wide of the Paris FC goal. City will find out their group-stage opponents when the draw is made at 12:00 BST on Friday. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article33763414.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_GettyImages-2174691179.jpg
