Wayne Rooney 'excited' to be BBC pundit for FA Cup tie - Nottm Forest v Man Utd - Wed 7.45pmichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/2/26/992d0bab-5d96-4ef9-a4f7-050f6e2201a8.jpgFormer England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says he is "excited" to be bringing his "FA Cup experience" to the BBC as a pundit. Rooney, 38, will be part of BBC One's coverage of Manchester United's FA Cup fifth-round tie at Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. He scored 23 goals in 49 appearances in the FA Cup, and was named man of the match in the 2016 final after helping United to a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace after extra time. “Watching the BBC’s coverage of the FA Cup every year was always very special growing up, I’m so excited to be joining up with the team to cover what will undoubtedly be an action-packed tie in this historic competition," said Rooney. "Having played and managed in the competition, it’s great be on the other side of the camera this time and hopefully I can bring some of that FA Cup experience to the coverage.” Rooney had spells as manager of Derby County and Major League Soccer side DC United after retiring as a player in 2021, but was sacked as Birmingham City boss in January after just 15 games in charge of the Championship club.

England youth international Omari Forson,19, could leave Manchester United this summer, with the attacking midfielder out of contract at Old Trafford. Nice and France centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo is interested in moving back to Barcelona despite interest from Manchester United.

Here are some of your comments:
Man Utd fans
Sue: In all honesty, I am almost glad that we lost against Fulham. I know that's a strange thing to say, but I have heard so much about Manchester United having 'turned a corner' that a reality check came at the right time. Things need to change at United sharpish - the fans know it. Ewan: Erik ten Hag always struggles to get a result when player availablity is an issue, even when United are at home. Truly top class coaches can get something from games even when there are injuries in the squad. This is Man Utd and the manager should be able to cope with these situations, which are not uncommon after all. Adam: We'll get knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, then get a absolute hammering against Manchester City on Sunday and then it's back to square one. We can't blame Hojlund's injury for the performance today. Adder: Very poor showing with a lack of energy, movement, desire and belief. Just so disappointing after such a good run, though I think recent results have flattered us. Injuries have hampered us again admittedly, but today was simply not good enough again.

Wayne Rooney: Former Birmingham boss dreams of managing Man Utd or Everton in the next 10 years..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11158/production/_132767996_rooney_celebrates.jpg Wayne Rooney is the 3rd highest goalscorer in Premier League history, netting 208 goals for Manchester United and boyhood club EvertonWayne Rooney says he is aiming for a quick return to management in order to help fulfil his dream of taking charge of Manchester United or Everton. The ex-United and Everton striker was sacked by Championship side Birmingham in January after 83 days in charge. Rooney previously had spells in charge of Derby County and MLS side DC United. "Managing Manchester United or Everton is the aim, these big jobs are where you want to get to," the ex-England captain said on Match of the Day. "But it's a process," added Rooney, 38. "I have got to go through the steps and get myself back on track." Speaking while he was working as a pundit on United's FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest, he said: "I want to get myself back into management to make sure in the next 10 years I'm hopefully in a position to go into one of the big jobs." Rooney was appointed as Birmingham boss on 11th October, following the controversial decision to dismiss John Eustace with Blues sixth in the Championship. Under the former forward, they lost nine of 15 games and dropped to 20th in the table. Rooney was sacked after a 3-0 loss at Leeds United on 2nd January. "I definitely want to get back into management. It was a setback what happened at Birmingham but I'm a fighter and I want to get back into it," he said. "You know as a manager [being sacked] is part of the job and you will have setbacks. It's about how you bounce back. "I've had some good time to reflect and will make sure I get it right next time."

Here are some of your comments:
United fans
Charlie: This is one of the worst United teams that I have seen in the last 50 years. They are so slow out of defence and just want to play across the pitch. The tactics are totally wrong and the players are not allowed to compete as they should. We have a winger who only has a left foot. Rashford is not a centre-forward. The team plays with continental tactics. Peter: Very average again with few indications of improvements since the Fulham match. I just don’t know why Erik ten Hag still plays Rashford, he does not deserve his place in the team anymore. With Manchester City and Liverpool coming up, heaven help us on current form. Mike: Very poor and ineffective forward play. Simple chances missed. Antony needs to be replaced, the same as Sancho. The defence and midfield lack the necessary energy and pace. Even with the return of the injured players, this team is unlikely to win anything and they will not qualify for the Champions League. Simon: I feel Marcus Rashford’s day has come and gone. He is no longer the forward we need. Although the passing throughout the United team was clumsy, the will and passion to succeed is clearly visible. Bruno Fernandes' free-kick to find Casemiro was brilliant. It illustrated the high quality skill that United possess. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/28/21/81842983-13137081-image-a-29_1709157442102.jpg

Paul Pogba banned: Juventus & Ex Manchester United midfielder 'shocked' by four-year suspension for doping..By Jess Anderson, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/185D/production/_132773260_gettyimages-1643537261.jpg Paul Pogba made 233 appearances during two spells with Manchester United and re-signed for Juventus in 2022Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba says he is "sad, shocked and heartbroken" after being banned from football for four years for a doping offence. The France international, 30, was provisionally suspended in September after a drugs test found elevated levels of testosterone in his system. "Everything I have built in my professional career has been taken away from me," he said in a statement. The former Manchester United player added he would appeal. Pogba was randomly tested after Juventus' first match of the season on 20 August. The positive test was confirmed by Italy's national anti-doping tribunal (Nado) in a second sample in October, and the anti-doping prosecutor's office requested a four-year suspension. Juventus told the BBC they received notification from the anti-doping tribunal on Thursday morning. Pogba said he believed the verdict was "incorrect" and he would "never knowingly or deliberately" dope. "When I am free of legal restrictions, the full story will become clear," he said, adding he would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). "As a professional athlete I would never do anything to enhance my performance by using banned substances and have never disrespected or cheated fellow athletes and supporters of any of the teams I have played for, or against." The ruling means 2018 World Cup winner Pogba will be unable to play until 2027, when he will be 34, with the ban backdated to the date of the failed test. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7E79/production/_122877323_gettyimages-1351965320.jpgSpeaking at the time of the initial suspension, Pogba's agent, Rafaela Pimenta, said: "What is certain is that Paul Pogba never wanted to break a rule." Testosterone is a hormone that increases the endurance of athletes. Nado said Pogba had violated rules when prohibited non-endogenous testosterone metabolites - substances not naturally produced by the body from testosterone - were found, and the results were "consistent with the exogenous [external] origin of the target compounds".

Manchester United: Marcus Rashford says commitment to club cannot be questioned.. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1659B/production/_132774519_rashford.jpgRashford made his Manchester United debut as an 18-year-old after coming through the youth ranks Marcus Rashford says people questioning his commitment to Manchester United need to show "more humanity". Rashford, 26, has scored five goals for United this season and faced criticism about perceived attitude issues. He missed United's FA Cup win over Newport, days after he was reportedly seen in nightspots in Northern Ireland. "If you ever question my commitment to United, that's when I have to speak up," the England forward said in a piece for The Players' Tribune. "It's like somebody questioning my entire identity, and everything I stand for as a man. "I grew up here. I have played for this club since I was a boy. My family turned down life-changing money when I was a kid so I could wear this badge." Manchester-born Rashford came through the United youth ranks before making his first-team debut as an 18-year-old in 2016. He has gone on to make 391 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 128 goals. Rashford finished last season with a career-best tally of 30 goals, but he has been unable to make the same impact this time around as United have struggled to build on their first campaign under manager Erik ten Hag. They sit sixth in the Premier League after 26 games. "I can take any criticism. I can take any headline. From podcasts, social media and the papers. I can take it," Rashford added. "But if you start questioning my commitment to this club and my love for football and bringing my family into it, then I'd simply ask you to have a bit more humanity." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8D41/production/_130416163_gettyimages-1553658255.jpgRashford has faced questions about his work-rate on the pitch and criticism about his off-field conduct. In January, there were reports he had been seen in Belfast nightspots before missing training at United a day later through illness and then the Newport game. He was dropped from the starting line-up for a Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle in November because Ten Hag was unhappy at him being seen out celebrating his birthday just hours after a 3-0 defeat by rivals Manchester City. United face City again this weekend. Another disciplinary measure saw Rashford put on the substitutes' bench for United's Premier League game at Wolves last season after oversleeping and being late for a team meeting. Rashford believes there is a "tone which other footballers don't get" in media coverage about him, putting that partly down to his high-profile child food poverty campaign which prompted a government U-turn in 2020. "It seems like they've been waiting for me to have a human moment so they can point the finger and say, 'See? See who he really is?'" Rashford wrote. "Listen, I'm not a perfect person. When I make a mistake, I'll be the first one to put my hand up and say that I need to do better."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f7e4/live/c438ed30-ca7a-11ee-896d-39d9bd3cadbb.jpgAly: As much as I love Man Utd, I have to disagree with Ten Hag here. Players should not be safe from criticism. We often talk on here about harsher punishments for diving, or at least to have it more consistently punished. Fernandes has been a fantastic player for United, but he really needs to stop diving and moaning so excessively. He's our captain and needs to lead by example. Is it any wonder Rashford struggles so much, when his captain is always moaning rather than leading the team. Resslington, Purbrook: There's little doubt that Man Utd were very ordinary against Fulham. Nor is there much doubt that Rashford was out of sorts or that Bruno is over-reactive when clipped. But the constant slamming of Ten Hag and the team is both very tedious and undeserved. Pretty much all of Ten Hag's outfield signings have been out injured, seemingly forever. Luke Shaw's overlap and interplay with Rashford is critical to Rashford's performance. Credit to Ten Hag for not griping about all the injuries...but that's exactly what's diminished their performances this year. Not enough quality back-up? That may be so, but Fergie never built his squad in a day either. Dion Dublin: Manchester United have won four of their last five in the league, so while they are not playing great football they seem to be picking up the points where they need to in the league. It's not great to watch - let's get it right and be honest - but they are 6th at the moment, only three points off Tottenham in 5th. They are doing OK, they could be doing better and playing better, but they are still in and around it. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/b1b5/live/d4fd3340-d7b5-11ee-a5aa-81c8d319a0f7.jpg

Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi is a very strong contender to become the next manager of Manchester United. Getafe are ready to open talks with United about extending Mason Greenwood's stay at the club, by agreeing another loan deal for the 22-year-old English forward or a permanent move.

Second Man Utd icon forced from Old Trafford seat after club apologised for 'disgraceful' decision..by Josh O'Brien.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32254920.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_GettyImages-463850816.jpgGordon Hill has become the second former Manchester United star to be told he is being moved from the Old Trafford seat he has had for almost 30 years - and has vowed to address the debacle with new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Hill made more than 100 appearances for the Red Devils across a three year stay, but that is not enough to prevent his relocation. It comes just weeks after another ex-player, Norman Whiteside, was subjected to the same treatment. Whiteside appeared more than 200 times for United in the 1980s, breaking through as a teenage star and scoring an iconic FA Cup Final goal. But he too has seen his platinum season tickets relocated. His wife claimed that the move stems from the fact the club want to expand executive seating, though the Red Devils have denied this. Now Hill has taken to social media to vent his fury over the situation, posting on X: "Looks like I will not be taking my season tickets after having them from 1996, and being told you will be relocated I can not believe this from a club I represented and played my heart out for. I was given a reason which was bloody ridiculous I will be speaking to Jim. Not happy." When asked by a follower if he knew the reason behind the decision to relocate his season ticket, Hill replied: "Ale room for Academy and women’s team. That’s it." His sentiment was a similar one shared by the wife of Whiteside last month, who posted an image of her husband's seat alongside a caption that read: "So, it doesn't matter how long you've been a loyal supporter, doesn't matter if you played for your club, @manutd can just dump you from your seat when they feel like it, so they can expand exec seating! Absolute disgrace! "I’d like to make clear that this post is not just about Norman. There are a whole block of loyal supporters who expressed their views to me at the West Ham game, but they feel as if they have no voice or platform to voice their anger." United were quick to issue a response as they admitted they empathise with Whiteside's frustration. A spokesperson said: “We have the greatest respect for Norman as a legend of the club, and understand the disappointment caused to him and other season ticket-holders by seat relocations. "These happen for various reasons, including, next season, the moving of matchday hospitality seats into consolidated blocks to address fan concerns about them being dispersed around the stadium. Other changes next season include the removal of hospitality seating from the Stretford End and installation of further rail seating in the North-West Quadrant, bringing benefits to many fans but also causing some disruption. "No additional hospitality seats are being created at the expense of season ticket-holders - in fact hospitality seating will reduce by more than 500 next season. We are committed to working with all season ticket-holders affected by relocations, including Norman, to find them the best possible alternative seats elsewhere in the ground.” A Manchester United spokesperson confirmed to Mirror Football: "We understand the disappointment felt by Gordon and other season ticket-holders affected by seat relocations," before echoing the same sentiment that was provided in their response to Whiteside being forced from his seat.

"We defended very well and there were two defining moments when we nearly made a breakthrough and conceded the first goal. "Then you are disappointed, we have to accept it and still were had the opportunties to at least get one point, but the win was also possible." On Kyle Walker foul on Marcus Rashford: "I looked back and asked Rashy [Rashford] if there was contact, maybe soft but there was contact." On tactics: "Getting behind the defending line with the speed of Garnacho, already after a couple of minutes there was some good breakthrough and then quickly after it was a good goal from Rashford. "We closed the middle very good and the box very good. "We stuck to the plan and we had the moment of the reckless action of the goalkeeper of City and after that attack we conceded the goal." More from Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: "We had two players on the pitch which were not 100% [fit]. Jonny Evans and Marcus Rashford, but they gave everything like the whole team and we are disappointed with the score." On Marcus Rashford: "Absolutely they fought, the togetherness and the performance was very good. On another day we could have won this - small margins. "Especially Rashford he had some good opportunties to score another goal and Alejandro Garnacho at moments [had opportunties]. "I think the plan went well, very small margins so all the credits is to Man City and how consistent they can play." On being booked: "Let's say this it is debatable there was contact [on Rashford] and it's a defining moment in the game, in the counter-attack they scored. "It was soft [foul on Rashford], but when you are in a full sprint you lose your rhythm that is why he went down." On injuries: "I don't know, they had to come off, but I preferred to keep them [Rashford and Evans] on as the organisation was very good." On damage of losing: "This year on we are really progressing and you have to get some points back. Everyone can beat everyone and things can quickly turn around. "Number five [fifth position in the league] can also be a position for Champions League so we have to fight for it!" ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/3/244c8019-3326-4ac4-936d-372d1a50df99.png

Here are some of your comments...
United fans
Rod: We were chasing shadows all afternoon even after the superb Rashford strike. City have shown the gulf in class between the clubs. We couldn’t string two passes together. It’s this constant denial from Ten Hag, who sees a different match from what the fans witness! Big Jim’s has a long and arduous job bringing this club back. Lance: It was solid performance from the boys in the face of the stiffest competition. Rashford's goal was sublime. A City goal felt inevitable in the second half. To see the subs that were made - Amrabat and Antony getting time in a red shirt when they're simply not good enough at this level - is galling. Forson looked instantly out of his depth too. Brian: If this was a real Manchester derby then where was the passion and commitment? As a red, I have to be honest and say City were a different class and it's sad that we are so far behind them. We have a team that lacks passion, determination and the pride to wear the shirt of Manchester United. It's not losing that hurts the fans, it's our lack of guts. Ian: Injuries aside, it's clear that ETH is out of his depth. Most of the players he's bought are ineffectual yet he insists on still playing them. His formations are far too predictable for other teams. Either something needs to change dramatically or he needs to go. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f877/live/7b0065a0-d987-11ee-98b2-99e965977111.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/cfa4/live/7eaf4620-da32-11ee-baca-8fdd88eefca3.jpgCaptain Bruno Fernandes says Manchester United will "try until the end of the season" to achieve a top-four finish and guarantee Champions League qualification. Sunday's derby loss to Manchester City left United 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and six behind Tottenham, who also have a game in hand. Fifth place may be enough for a Champions League spot, depending on the performances of English sides in European competition this season. Fernandes told MUTV: "We need to look forward. We don't depend only on ourselves to get in the positions we want. We're not hiding from that. "We want to be in the Champions League. We want to try until the end of the season to get into that fourth place. That gives you the possibility to be in the Champions League, so we know it's going to be hard, but we have to do everything that is on our hands that we can do. "Going to the next game at home [against Everton on Saturday], we know that our fans will be there again, over and over again. They're behind us, they push us and next game we have to go there and win that game."

Solskjaer advised United to sign Haaland when release clause was £17m..Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7412/live/f14e25c0-dbb8-11ee-8500-63816083acc3.jpgOle Gunnar Solskjaer told Manchester United to sign Erling Haaland when he was his manager, and revealed the Old Trafford club passed up on the chance to sign the Norwegian when his release clause was just 20m euros (£17m). Solskjaer was Haaland's coach for almost two seasons at Molde. Speaking to the Stick To Football podcast, external, Solskjaer said he alerted United to Haaland's ability in the summer of 2018, months before he replaced Jose Mourinho as manager. Then, following his arrival at the club, he again urged the club to sign Haaland - but again United decided against following the recommendation. "Erling was with me at Molde for two seasons, more or less," said Solskjaer. "The summer before I came, I rang the club and said: 'You have to sign this boy, he is going to be absolutely top class.' That was in June or July and they said they didn't have enough reports. "By the time I came in as caretaker, we [Molde] had sold him to Salzburg. I tell the club straight away: 'Buy him.' He had a release clause. No-one else then would have paid that money. It was 20m euros and it would have been a bargain. It was the club's decision to not go for him then. "We didn't go for him until he started scoring for Salzburg but then Dortmund, Juventus, everyone was there." Haaland went on to join Borussia Dortmund before moving to Manchester City in 2022 and becoming a key man in the Blues' Treble success under Pep Guardiola last season. However, while Solskjaer thinks it was possible to sign Haaland - despite the bad blood that existed between the player's father Alf-Inge, and former United skipper Roy Keane - he is less certain whether Jude Bellingham would have made the move to United from Birmingham City. Bellingham was famously introduced to Sir Alex Ferguson during a tour of United's Carrington training complex. However, he linked up with Haaland at Dortmund before moving to Real Madrid last summer. "We had Jude in the building," said Solskjaer. "We sold the club to him as best we could but he wanted X amount of minutes. "He is the most mature 17-year-old I ever met in my life."

No 'magic wand' to fix United - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/1447/live/255383d0-db9e-11ee-948c-877311908809.jpgFormer Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he hopes his successor Erik ten Hag is "going to be successful" but that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will not have a "magic wand" to immediately turn the club's fortunes around. United are 11 points off the Premier League top four but Ratcliffe’s recent minority purchase of the club offers hope of long-term improvement, with the Ineos chairman taking control of football operations. "I don’t think there’s a magic wand [at United] as in: ‘We’ve changed the owners.'" Solskjaer told the latest episode of Stick To Football, external. "Obviously, they’ve got their ways of working – the Glazers have still got the commercial [operation] – who knows how it’s going to be in football with that side of it. "I hope he [Ten Hag] is going to be successful. We hope he’s going to make it, but you never know what the new owners are thinking. It’s about results and consistency the rest of the season." Solskjaer has not returned to management since being sacked by United, and says the magnitude of the job makes it hard to follow. "I needed time out, and I have properly enjoyed it. Just prioritised myself, family – and I have had a few offers with [other clubs] and it’s like: 'Nah, I’m not ready,'" he added. "It’s got to be somewhere where I can be myself, not like anyone dictating: 'You need to do this, you need to do this’.' When you've been at United, you manage them, you learn a few things, and you want to do it your way next time."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/a9ea/live/a03f3da0-db80-11ee-9a5b-e35447f6c53b.jpgManchester United have opened talks with 18-year-old England Under-19 midfielder Kobbie Mainoo over a new improved contract. United sent scouts to watch Bologna's 22-year-old Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee in their game against Atalanta on Sunday. Four Premier League clubs are battling it out to sign Copenhagen's £20m-rated Roony Bardghji, with Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Tottenham all keen on the 18-year-old Swedish midfielder. The Old Trafford club are expected to make an approach to Crystal Palace for their sporting director Dougie Freedman. Meanwhile, they are interested in appointing Southampton director of football Jason Wilcox as technical director. Manchester United and Paris St-Germain are emerging as frontrunners to sign 25-year-old Napoli and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen this summer. A number of Manchester United players believe Dutch manager Erik ten Hag will be replaced at the end of the season by new co-owners Ineos. United intend to sell Jadon Sancho this summer following the winger's loan spell with Borussia Dortmund, irrespective of whether Ten Hag is still manager.
