Manchester United: Aaron Wan-Bissaka among three players to extend deals at Old Trafford..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4542/production/_132203771_gettyimages-1905709808.jpg Wan-Bissaka has made 15 appearances for Manchester United this seasonManchester United have triggered one-year options to extend the contracts of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal until June 2025. Without the extensions, all three players would have been free to talk to other clubs with their initial deals expiring this summer. United boss Erik ten Hag said the club were also discussing extensions with Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial. Both Frenchmen will be out of contract at the end of this season. "We are talking with Rapha Varane and with Anthony Martial," said Ten Hag. "And we have triggered the options on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal." When pressed on Varane and Martial's situation, Ten Hag told BBC Sport: "I think that is an internal discussion between the club and the player." The club are understood to be keen on opening talks with Wan-Bissaka, 26, over a longer-term deal to remain at Old Trafford. United signed the defender for £50m from Crystal Palace in 2019. Club sources said more than 800 right-backs were tracked before they made the Croydon-born player their fifth most expensive signing. However, he has struggled to make a consistent impact and even this season has often found himself left out of the starting line-up with Erik ten Hag preferring Diogo Dalot, who signed a new five-year deal in May. Wan-Bissaka has made 15 appearances, including 11 starts, for United this season.

Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe set to attend first game since proposed purchase confirmed..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B4C1/production/_132137264_gettyimages-1683458826.jpgSir Jim Ratcliffe is set to watch Manchester United in person for the first time since his proposed 25% purchase of the club was confirmed when they play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Ineos' director of sport Sir David Brailsford has been at all three United matches since the announcement of the £1bn purchase on Christmas Eve. Ineos chief executive Jean Claude Blanc was also at the FA Cup win at Wigan. Official ratification of the deal is not likely until the end of February. However, it is part of the deal that Brailsford and Blanc will sit on the football club board and must be told of any significant decisions around key personnel in the interim period. Ineos representatives spent extended periods at Old Trafford and United's Carrington training ground last week as they begin to get an understanding of the club. Ratcliffe addressed staff in a series of meetings as he outlined his determination to restore United to the pinnacle of the English game.

It's disrespectful from Manchester United to request Onana to do such a thing and it's really low from Onana to even consider it. "It sends such a bad message for not only Cameroon, but for the respect that people will have for Afcon and the way they should treat us. If we can't even respect ourselves, how can we expect other people to treat us any different? For me, Andre Onana is shooting us and himself in the foot. "If I was in the squad I wouldn't be having any of that. You can't play a game the day before and think you can just fly out to the continent and play another game. Just the thought of it drives me crazy, I'm so disappointed. "For me, you've got to teach him a lesson. I like Andre, I always have his back but when things like this happen, the pride of the country and the continent is way above an individual person. For me he should stsy home and get punished for that." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/126AE/production/_131883457_gettyimages-1810313485.jpg

Jadon Sancho: Man Utd winger returns to Borussia Dortmund on loan..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/107E4/production/_132265576_gettyimages-1640947950.jpg Jadon Sancho's last goal for Manchester United came in a 2-1 win against Fulham in May 2023Manchester United and England winger Jadon Sancho has rejoined former club Borussia Dortmund on loan for the rest of the 2023-24 season. The 23-year-old moved to Old Trafford in a £73m deal from German club Dortmund in July 2021. He has not played for United since 26th August after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag and has been training away from the first team since September. The loan contract contains no option to buy. "When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like 'coming home'," Sancho said. "I know the club inside and out, I've always been very close with the fans here, and I've never lost contact with those in charge. "I can't wait to see my team-mates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League." Sancho is already in Germany having completed a medical on Wednesday, and is expected to join the club's mid-season training camp in Marbella. Dortmund will pay 3.5m euros (£3m), with up to an additional 4m euros (£3.4m) in add-ons which are subject to appearances, Champions League progress and qualification. The deal covers the majority of Sancho's wages, and if the bonuses are paid in full it would be more than 100% of Sancho's salary to the end of the season. Sancho previously spent four seasons with the Bundesliga club from 2017, scoring 50 goals in 137 appearances. His high-profile move to Old Trafford has seen him struggle for form and consistency, scoring 12 goals in 82 appearances. His relationship with Ten Hag deteriorated after the was omitted from the squad for September's defeat at Arsenal, with the Dutchman stating it was because of his performance in training. Sancho rejected those claims and said on social media that he was being made a "scapegoat" and later refused to apologise for his comments, which led to his exile. "Jadon is an absolute difference player and I'm looking forward to seeing him back in black and yellow soon," added Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl. Dortmund are fifth in the Bundesliga and resume their campaign at Darmstadt on 13 January following a brief winter training camp in Marbella, Spain. Total Career Stats (Last Game 26.08.23): Age: 23, Played 282, Goals 90, Clubs: Borussia Dortmund II, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, England U16, 17, 19 & England...

It is understood there is no option to buy when the loan deal has finished in the summer and the Bundesliga side will contribute €3.5m, with up to an additional €4m in add-ons. The 23-year-old has been exiled from the Manchester United team since a public dispute with manager Erik ten Hag at the begging of September. Sancho has struggled to settle during his time with the Red Devils since his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 and has played just 82 times, scoring 12 goals and making six assists. He will now temporarily return to club where he became one of Europe's mostsought after young talents after scoring 50 times and making 64 assists in his 137 appearances in all competitions. Speaking on the deal to join his former side, he said: "When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like 'coming home'. I know the club inside and out. I've always been very close with the fans here, and I've never lost contact with those in charge. "I can't wait to see my teammates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/6ed6/live/c6dda120-b080-11ee-bc2f-cb5579b90709.png

(Athletic - subscription required, external) Sevilla are favourites to sign United and Tunisia midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, 20, on loan for the rest of the season. Six United players could return for Tottenham match, says Ten Hag..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/785/cpsprodpb/b381/live/bb1f81f0-b148-11ee-a035-7dead463cd44.jpgManchester United manager Erik ten Hag has issued an injury update on his squad ahead of Sunday's Premier League fixture against Tottenham at 4.30pm. The Dutchman confirmed that some members of his squad who have been absent recently are back in contention for the game against Ange Postecoglou's side. "Licha Martinez [is] training, Casemiro [is] training, Luke Shaw [is] training, so there are players returning, they are coming in for selection for Sunday," he said. "Eriksen was ill in the week - he will return. Antony will return. Amad will return. We have more choice in this moment in the squad to put out a starting XI and create a bench that is stronger." Despite the return of some first-team players, Ten Hag says that Sunday's match will come too soon for former Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount. "They are a step ahead, when I talk about Licha Martinez returning, Casemiro returning, for instance, but they were a long time away," said Ten Hag. "Mason Mount will return but take a little longer and Tyrell Malacia will return as well. "Victor Lindelof is also on his way back but it will take some weeks and takes time to get back into match fitness."

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to MOTD: "I am quite disappointed, when you go ahead twice and then concede two soft goals it is a bit frustrating, but you have to take it as it is. "The attitude from the team was great, the spirit was great. We fought and gave everything. The fans were behind us and I think it was a great game for everyone to see, not just Manchester United fans, because there was a great tempo to the game. "Senior players like Casemiro, Martinez and Luke Shaw are returning and when you add that to our team I am sure it is a strong side." On Hojlund-Rashford partnership: "They are growing together so keep going with the progress." Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it was a very intense game. It was very good game for the audience. When you analyse the game and look back, we are slightly disappointed because we were twice up and you concede some soft goals like we did." Pleasing start of game: "It was very good and we scored two great goals in the first half. It was good to see how we broke the lines and were direct. That is why it is disappointing when you don't win." Breaking the lines: "First of all, we need to defend as a team, be compact and attack the full-backs. That breaks the lines and you create chances." Front three partnership: "I think you see it is growing and add Garnacho. We have a front three that is a threat for every opponent." Poor goals to concede: "The first is the corner and we got two warnings. There was already a ball on the by-line. You have to be more physical. That shouldn't happen. We know the quick release and we allowed them the diagonal pass that broke our whole team." Second half: "The game was that intense, the level dropped all over." Controlling game more: "I think we can bring more calmness and composure on the ball. We gave so much space away so it is challenging to pass the ball in midfield." Sir Jim Ratcliffe watching: "He will have seen a team fighting for each other and trying to get a win. He will have seen two great goals." Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to MOTD: "You always want to win games but I couldn't be prouder of the players. They have had to deal with a fair bit this week and to put on a performance like that... I thought the way we handled the game was outstanding. "They are a good team on the counter. For the most part we dealt with it OK. Our response to both of their goals was outstanding and I thought in the second half we were the better side and deserved to win. "We've had a rough week with some illness in the camp. Credit to the players they kept going to the end. It was an outstanding effort. "Timo had two training sessions and played 60 minutes for the club. He was outstanding. "We have 10 days until the next game, hopefully get some players back and at least some training into these boys. We will give them some time off because they have earned it." Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm delighted mate. I thought we played really well. It wasn't the greatest of starts being a goal down particularly here. Our response was outstanding and our football after that was really good. In the second half we really controlled the game. We've had a really rough week off the field with illness and other things." On sticking to game plan: "We got in before that. We had a nice little passage and got up the park. Manchester United on the transition are still a very good team. Players like Rashford, Bruno and Garnacho can unlock any defence. We did everything today. That's where our strengths lie and theirs. If you give the ball away, there's always that threat. Both full-backs had tough jobs." Control Man United: "You're aware of it but you're never going to totally deal with it. This fool proof system everyone is seeking will never exist. Some of our football was outstanding today." Set piece goal: "Mason is in charge of attacking set pieces and he's doe a fantastic job all year. We knew we'd need players in playing their first game for a while." On Kulusevski absence: "He hadn't trained all week, Skippy was under the weather and so was Destiny. All year we've just got on with it. It was a big game, particularly away from home. Romero was outstanding as the skipper." Getting more players back: "I hope so. This tunnel has been pretty long. We've done alright." Tottenham came back from behind twice in a pulsating Premier League encounter to deny Manchester United a victory in front of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Ratcliffe, attending his first game since a proposed 25% purchase of his boyhood club was confirmed on Christmas Eve, said beforehand that he was "very excited" to be there. And he saw Rasmus Hojlund drive United into a third-minute lead. But Ratcliffe's pre-match assertion that United "normally do well against Spurs" wasn't quite borne out here. Brazilian striker Richarlison levelled with his sixth goal in as many Premier League games for the visitors, who were without three players, including captain Son Heung-min - away with South Korea at the Asian Cup. Marcus Rashford put the hosts ahead before the break, but Rodrigo Bentancur wiped out the advantage a minute after the restart with a blistering shot, his first goal since April, during which time he has recovered from a cruciate knee ligament injury and an ankle problem. The rest of the game would have been an education for Ratcliffe, who sat next to Sir Alex Ferguson in the directors' box. United had less than 40% possession, nine shots against Tottenham's 16 and only a third of the visitors' six on target.

He's talking of a new or remodelled stadium when the squad is at least five to eight years behind the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City (and that's if he gets it right from the off). Chris: Ten Hag has mentioned it, now Hojlund… more pressure to play for United? Give me a break. Yes there’s scrutiny but if anything there is less pressure to play for United than Liverpool/City/Arsenal. Look at the performances that the United squad have churned out over the last few years. Maybe if there was pressure to play well they’d put a bit more effort into their games.

'Give Mainoo the keys' to Man Utd midfield..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/11/27/15/78283737-12796369-image-m-3_1701100724855.jpgFormer Arsenal striker Ian Wright has urged Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to allow 18-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo to play with more freedom. "Give him the keys, because when you look at they way he plays, his calmness, his maturity for his age, the positions he picks up, he’s somebody now," Wright told BBC's Match of the Day 2. "I’m looking at Manchester United still playing counter-attacking football at home when you’ve got a player in midfield that can progress the ball and play the ball with such calmness, such fluidity. I’d love to see Mainoo where he’s in a situation where he’s then able to get the ball and just put it forward. "At some stage, just let him play, let him be the orchestrator - progressing the ball and getting the ball and playing the ball - so that the front men, instead of having to continually try and run for transition, come and play, link play, one-twos. Start playing football."

Hannibal was expected to be in Tunisia's squad at the Africa Cup of Nations but opted out of the tournament to secure his club future. Numerous clubs expressed an interest in the 20-year-old, including Everton. However, he has opted to join Spanish top-flight club Sevilla in a deal with an option to buy, which is understood to be worth £17.2m. Hannibal has made 10 appearances for United this season, the latest in the FA Cup third-round win at Wigan on 8 January. He has started only one Premier League game and was not involved in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday. "Best of luck to Hannibal," said Manchester United on the club website. He joins former United midfielder Adnan Januzaj at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Here are some of your comments:
United fans
Mahir: Great to see Rashford and Hojlund back on the scoresheet. It's clear that more work is needed to get this team cooking, but I think the return of individual key players is crucial. Martinez was a highly impactful sub and transformed the team. Overall an OK performance. Sam: United are just not a very good team, that’s the top and bottom of it. Very average players who aren’t very good when they play together. Long journey, not sure we’ll ever get there. Peter: I must admit that the first half was better. I think the problems are still facing them though. United seem to run out of steam and ideas the longer the match goes on. A lot of deadwood to clear out and some decent players to buy. I think Sir Jim will see this though. Gerry: One manager has been there six months, his team has sold its leading goalscorer, he has five or more players missing and he has them playing like Real Madrid. The other manager has been there 18 months and has no style of play with little evidence of any coaching with or without the ball. Just hopeful long balls in the hope of a single moment of brilliance. Inevitable he's sacked.
