Marcel Sabitzer: Man Utd midfielder out for rest of season with knee injury..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4F31/production/_129737202_gettyimages-1252980233.jpgManchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. The Austria international has made 18 appearances and scored three goals since joining on loan from Bayern Munich in January. The 29-year-old helped United win the Carabao Cup and reach June's FA Cup final against Manchester City. BBC Sport understands no decision has been made on whether the club will sign him permanently in the summer. "Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel's services, as we strive for a strong finish to our season in the Premier League and the FA Cup," Manchester United said. "We appreciate his contribution to our progress so far. We would like to wish Marcel well in having a speedy recovery." Sabitzer last appeared for United as a substitute during the 1-0 loss at West Ham on 7th May. As well as the FA Cup final, he will miss Premier League games against Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham.

Man Utd sale: Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim makes improved offer to buy club..By Simon Stoneichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15D14/production/_129746398_manutd.jpgSheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani has made an improved offer to buy Manchester United. Sources have told BBC Sport a fresh bid was submitted on Tuesday morning amid further talks involving the Raine Group, who are handling the sale. The Qatari banker and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group are the two main parties looking to buy the Old Trafford club. Both groups submitted third bids at the end of April It is understood the new bid is for 100% of the club, will clear United's debt and includes a separate fund directed solely at the club and local community. Figures in March showed United owed £969.6m through a combination of gross debt, bank borrowings and outstanding transfer fees with associated payments. The Glazer family announced in November they were considering selling Manchester United as they "explore strategic alternatives". Although there has been no response from the Glazer family since the last bid deadline on 28th April, there has been increasing confidence in the Ineos camp that their efforts to buy United would be successful. It is understood one of Ratcliffe's suggestions has been to lower the amount of United he wanted to buy from an initial 69% for all the Glazer stake to just over 50%, which would allow co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to retain some involvement. Avram Glazer followed up his appearance at the Carabao Cup final in February by watching United's women's team lose in the FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday. Glazer subsequently visited a London hotel owned by Sheikh Jassim's father, sparking more rumours about the sales process, although BBC Sport has been told there were no talks held involving the Raine Group. There has been no indication when the Glazer family will make a decision over the future direction of United. They bought the club for £790m in 2005 and have established a valuation of between £5bn and £6bn for it. It had been felt an announcement could come this week given the transfer window opens in less than a month, which would give manager Erik ten Hag some clarity over his summer budget. However, there is no guarantee this will happen.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Fulham are among the clubs interested in Gent's 20-year-old Nigerian forward Gift Orban. Manchester United are finalising their summer transfer plans, with Juventus' France midfielder Adrien Rabiot, 28, back on their shortlist along with Napoli's South Korea defender defender Kim Min-jae, 26. Manchester United want to reward Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez, 25, with a new deal following his impressive first season at the club since joining from Ajax. Ecuador midfielder Kendry Paez has reportedly signed for Chelsea for a fee of £20m with the 16-year-old also attracting interest from Manchester United.

Phil Jones: Man Utd defender to leave in summer after 'difficult' few years..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/FC73/production/_129772646_gettyimages-1395367162.jpgPhil Jones will leave Manchester United when his contract expires this summer, after a "very difficult" few years because of injuries. The 31-year-old, who has been capped 27 times by England, made 229 appearances for United and scored six goals. The defender joined in 2011 from Blackburn Rovers and was part of the Premier League-winning team in 2012-13. "I've worked tirelessly hard - I literally left no stone unturned," Jones said in a club interview. "I tried to get back as quick as I could, every time I was out in the last couple of years." His final appearance for United came in a 3-0 win over Brentford at the end of last season, and he has been sidelined with injury during this campaign. "I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played amongst. I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I did everything I could," Jones wrote in an open letter to Manchester United fans. "It's been very difficult, the last couple of years, there's no denying that," he added in his club interview. Jones admitted he felt like he was "letting people down" and that he "found it hard to even speak to my team-mates" because he was "hurt that I couldn't help them". "My family have been absolutely instrumental in keeping me on the straight and narrow and keeping me focused, to try to get fit and try to play more. "I think the highlight for me would have to be the Wolves game [returning from injury last season], when I came back. "That was just a moment that I'll never forget. It gives me goosebumps now, thinking about it. I mean I worked so, so hard to get to that stage of fitness. "That was a huge, huge moment in my career and the fans, that day, were incredible. The love that they showed me for that game, the passion that they showed, was sensational. "I can't thank them enough for that. They've been a constant support throughout my time here." During his 12 years at the club, Jones won the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson's final campaign with United. He also won the FA Cup in 2016, the League Cup and Europa League in 2017 and the Community Shield in 2011 and 2013. Speaking in 2021, Jones said had "been through hell and back over the last couple of years" after struggling with injury and lockdown. He described breaking down in tears and feelings of "rage" and helplessness over being labelled a figure of ridicule by some of his own supporters, and described once being verbally abused in the street in Hale while out with his two daughters. Manchester United said: "Our number four is now taking some time before deciding his next move. "Everybody at United would like to wish Phil the very best of luck for the future." Manager Erik ten Hag said: "He has a great career, what he achieved, winning the FA Cup, winning Europa League, being present at two World Cups, massive career at Man United. "All the credits for his career." Total career stats are: Age 31, Clubs Blackburn, Manchester United & England, Played 296 & Goals 6. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/0381/production/_129779800_gettyimages-1240309466.jpg

Marcus Rashford contract: Erik ten Hag is confident Manchester United striker will sign new deal..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10BCE/production/_129785586_gettyimages-1465317585.jpgErik ten Hag believes Marcus Rashford and Manchester United "will find each other" in the striker's ongoing contract discussions. Rashford has scored 29 goals in all competitions for his boyhood club this season, his best in a United shirt. Speaking before the visit to Bournemouth on Saturday, Ten Hag was asked for an update on the negotiations regarding the England international's future. "I know [it is taking time]," he said. "But I don't talk about the process. This is not important at the moment for me or Rashy. "For him, it is to get more goals this season and he is playing a wonderful season and the team is playing a wonderful season. "We have to get into the Champions League and focus on that. Marcus wants to stay and we want him to stay, so I think we will find each other." Ten Hag also said Rashford, 25, is a doubt for Saturday's match against the Cherries due to illness, despite him returning to training earlier this week after an injury which saw him miss the home win over Wolves. Fourth-placed United are a point ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand in the race for Champions League qualification, and two wins from their remaining three games would guarantee the Red Devils a place in the top four "I think we have to keep doing what we have all season," Ten Hag said. "Improve every day and improve every game and not look too far ahead. "Focusing on the next game is the most important."

David de Gea: Manchester United goalkeeper wins Golden Glove..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B1D9/production/_129792554_gettyimages-1248620725.jpgManchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has secured the Premier League Golden Glove with two games remaining. The Spaniard has kept 16 clean sheets this season, conceding 41 goals. Liverpool's Allison is second with 14 clean sheets, but it became impossible for him to catch De Gea when he conceded against Aston Villa. "The golden glove is not just about me - we have been solid this season," said de Gea, 32, after their 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday. Newcastle's Nick Pope and Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale both have 13 clean sheets, with Manchester City's Ederson on 11. It is the second time De Gea has won the accolade, last claiming it in 2017-2018. And it comes despite the fact de Gea has come under criticism this season for making several costly mistakes, calling his future at the club into question after 12 years at Old Trafford. A mistake to gift Said Benrahma the winner in a 1-0 loss to West Ham earlier this month took his tally of errors that have led to a goal in all competitions this season to four, the joint most of any Premier League player, along with Tottenham's Hugo Lloris. But United boss Erik ten Hag said "anyone can make a mistake" and he believes he has a "top keeper" in the Spaniard, who has made 542 appearances for United. "We defend with 11, that's why we have so many clean sheets. Of course we have a top keeper who can save great opportunities from the opponent," Ten Hag said. The goalkeeper is out of contract this summer, and in February said he hoped contract talks with the club would "end in a good way". Despite winning the Golden Glove, de Gea's United have suffered heavy defeats to Liverpool, Manchester City and Brentford, with a goal difference of 11. Manchester City boast the accolade of the fewest goals conceded so far on 31, with Newcastle having conceding 32.

AFC Bournemouth 0 Manchester United 1 (Casimiro 9) ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11881/production/_129790817_474edb1b26604dabbca7d05f5dc13df76e335bb6.jpgCasemiro's stunning overhead kick edged Manchester United a step closer to a top-four finish as they secured a narrow Premier League victory over Bournemouth. The Red Devils need just one point from their final two games against Chelsea and Fulham to secure Champions League football at Old Trafford next season. In a game lacking in clear-cut opportunities a piece of magic from Casemiro proved the difference at the Vitality Stadium. The Brazilian midfielder picked up a beautifully weighted pass from Christian Eriksen and turned away from Marcos Senesi to acrobatically hammer home. Without their top goal scorer this season, Marcus Rashford, who was absent from the squad with illness and missed the opportunity to equal his best tally of 17 goals in a single campaign, United struggled to mount regular goal threats. But Casemiro's ninth-minute strike, combined with Liverpool's draw against Aston Villa, were enough to move United one point away from guaranteeing a top-four spot.

THURSDAY 25th MAY 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE - OLD TRAFFORD - 8PM

You can never go into a game for a point. Our approach is like always, to go and win. We have prepared them very well, now the players have to act. "I've said to the players, 'get the job done'. We know we have to give everything and 99% is not enough. We need a clear plan and from there the highest intensity. We need high standards and then we have a good chance to win this game." "I think a club like Manchester United needs a good bench with top players. He [Marcus Rashford] was at first injured and now he is back so we are happy. We can do something from the bench but we have a strong team." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/5/25/ffb4a377-5ad3-466f-9cc4-11aa7137deb3.pngChelsea boss Frank Lampard, speaking to Sky Sports, on why Raheem Sterling and Thiago Silva have been left out: "He [Sterling] had a small feeling in his hamstring at Manchester City at half time but carried on so it's not a major issue but he hasn't trained since that game so he is out and we are hoping he is involved at the weekend. "Thiago has played a lot of games. There is no doubt he could play two games in three days and finish the season but at the same time I think it's good for him to sit out and be ready for the weekend. "My role here, when I came in with the league position and the targets not being what Chelsea were used to...it's a position for me to give players an opportunity to see what they can offer and test them to see what they have. "That starts on the training pitch to show they deserve to play but also in this position to give some of them some game time so I'll be interested to see their individual performances. "If they don't feel like they are going to be part of getting Chelsea back...you have to have a pride to play for Chelsea no matter what is on the game. This moment is difficult but you have to have pride to play against a really good team in a great arena to play football. Some days I wish I could still do that so it is a blessing for players and I want to see that as a collective."

Manchester United chief executive Richard Arnold is early into his seat in the directors’ box tonight...Simon Stone, BBC Sport. It must be a weird situation for Arnold. With the ownership issues still to be resolved, he can’t know for certain whether this is his penultimate home game before someone replaces him in the summer. We are still waiting to hear what the Glazer family are intending to do, sell to either Sheikh Jassim or Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group or just accept additional investment. Marcus Rashford is one goal away from hitting the 30 mark for the first time. It is an outstanding effort and Manchester United would be struggling without Rashford's contribution as the only other player in double figures in all competitions this season is Bruno Fernandes, with 11. 'Glazers out'And the fans are protesting about the Glazer family again tonight. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/5/25/f814439d-d595-4791-8db8-951ac1a943d9.jpgChelsea are guaranteed to finish in the Premier League's bottom half for the first time in 27 years. They are winless in their previous 15 league matches against sides above them in the table, drawing four and losing 11, including each of the last four. The Blues would also set a new club record of 16 defeats in a 38-game Premier League season if they are beaten at Old Trafford. Chelsea have scored 36 goals in 36 league games this term, their worst top-flight return since they mustered just 31 goals in 1923-24. Ten Hag praises 'top keeper' De GeaMan Utd head coach Erik ten Hag praises "top keeper" David de Gea, who has won the Premier League Golden Glove with 17 clean sheets following their 1-0 win at Bournemouth. Chelsea's youngest ever PL sideAt 23 years and 238 days, this is Chelsea's youngest ever average starting XI in a Premier League match. Will Mason Mount stay at Chelsea ?ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/5/25/579fbcb3-a77b-4e3d-ad37-ba7f3e315158.jpgFrank Lampard said Mason Mount would sign a new contract at Chelsea “in an ideal world” but accepted the situation may not be so straightforward for the England midfielder. The 24-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract and has been heavily linked with a move away from the club he joined aged six, with tonight's opponents Manchester United among the sides he has been linked with. If no extension is agreed it will mean he is free to begin negotiating with other clubs at the start of next year, but Chelsea could look to sell in the summer to avoid the possibility of the academy graduate leaving on a free transfer. Lampard, who gave Mount his first-team debut during his first spell as manager in 2019, said the club must work to show academy players that there is a path to the senior side regardless of Mount’s immediate future. “It’s a hard one for me to comment on because I’m not inside Mason’s head and from the club’s point of view my role is clearly what it is,” said Lampard. “In the practical sense it’s completely between both sides on that front. I’m not surprised because this is football. Does everyone know that I really like Mason Mount as a lad and as a football player? Yes, sure, of course they do."
