Tuesday 7th May 2024 - League 1 - Play-Offs - 2nd Leg - Result
Bolton 2 (Collins 43, Toal 45+1) Barnsley 3 (Cosgrove 36, 76, Phillips 64) - (agg:5-4)ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/7/46567da0-e4cc-4c03-855b-acde9cc08d6b.pngichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/7/9b7b1f08-fb21-4b79-97e8-9598719f98ba.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/7/dead9211-3c13-451f-b7ed-86abf47b8324.jpgBolton Wanderers secured their place in the League One play-off final, despite losing 3-2 to Barnsley in their semi-final second leg. Bolton had looked almost certain to book their spot at Wembley when, having won the first leg 3-1 at Oakwell, they recovered from going behind at home to lead 5-2 on aggregate at half-time. Wanderers striker Aaron Collins had found the net from 25 yards to cancel out Sam Cosgrove's close-range header, before Eoin Toal nodded in from a corner to establish a three-goal cushion. However, a deflected strike from Adam Phillips and another Cosgrove header brought Barnsley back within one goal of forcing extra time. The Tykes pushed for an equaliser in the tie late on, with chances falling in the box to Mael de Gevigney and Cosgrove, but they fell short of a second successive appearance in the third-tier play-off final. Instead it will be Ian Evatt's side, who finished third in League One, that will face either Oxford United or Peterborough United for a place in the Championship on Saturday, 18th May. Oxford will take a one-goal advantage into the second leg of their semi-final on Wednesday.

My prediction of Peterborough not going up came to fruition tonight as they could only manage a 1-1 in their 2 nd leg of the play off semi final, losing 1-2 on aggregate.. Oxford will play Bolton on the ,18th may for the right to play in the Championship next season

well a bit of an anti climax for Bolton, not one shot on target in the game, and 0 -2 , more M5 /6 travels next season!!!

Two poor finalists. Bolton are nowhere near as strong as they should be, given their size as a club, and I certainly don't expect Oxford to survive in a poor championship.
They were reduced to time-wasting against 10 men against us at their place and we comfortably beat them at ours.
Repeatedly find myself reflecting on how poor the championship's play-off sides are as well, with this being particularly true of West Brom.
The money being sucked into the PL's upper echelons is visibly reducing the quality of the lower league game.

That’s six points gone, for Rovers next season. All these teams we beat seem to have made it to the championship, why can’t we ?
