T20 World Cup Final - Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne - England won the toss and decided to field.

Pakistan 137-8, Masood 38, Babar 32, Shadab 20, Curran 3-12, Rashid 2-22, Jordan 2-27

England 138-5 (19 overs) Stokes 52no, Buttler 26, Brook 20, Ali 19, Rauf 2-23

England win by 5 wickets

England beat Pakistan by five wickets in a pulsating final in Melbourne to win the Men's T20 World Cup and become double world champions.

Chasing 138 in front of a raucous Pakistan-supporting crowd, they fell to 45-3 and 84-4 amid electric fast bowling.

But, under intense pressure at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, Ben Stokes wrote himself further into the folklore of English cricket by finishing on 52 not out.

He was there at the end, as he was in the 2019 50-over World Cup final, as this current white-ball side provided another of English cricket's greatest wins.

As the equation tightened, Stokes capitalised on a cruel injury to Pakistan left-armer Shaheen Afridi and took England to victory with six balls to spare.

The win, thanks in large part to a superb bowling performance from Sam Curran and Adil Rashid, means England become the first team to hold the men's 20 and 50-over world titles.

It is also their second T20 world title following victory in the West Indies in 2010.

Hard to see Archer playing top flight cricket again. Two operations on his elbow, stress fracture of his back. Shame..talented player.

Yes, it’s an incredibly strong squad. If you were splitting hairs you’d say with Ali and Rashid in their mid-30s England will be looking to develop a younger spinner though both will be able to play for a further 2/3 years if they want to. And with the youth coming through they will need to be very good to dislodge those in the squad. After their defeat to Ireland England faced 4 matches which they needed to win and they did it without looking like they would fail. I think that was as good a string of performance I’ve seen from an England team in limited overs cricket. (Given it was T20 where anything can happen in a few overs. 50 overs you can have a bad few overs and recover, not so easy in T20)

Not sure about that. The win against Sri Lanka looked very much in the balance, right up to the end.

Yes, I know what you mean but in T20 terms it was fairly comfortable! Although it went to the last over with Stokes there throughout I was never worried that we wouldn’t win. Perhaps it was more about losing a few wickets but we do bat deep and this is a different team.
