Michael Vaughan leads criticism following England's Twenty20 washout..
Michael Vaughan led the criticism of the ICC and the Melbourne Cricket Ground after England’s T20 World Cup clash with Australia fell foul of the wet weather without a ball being bowled.
‘Rainy season in Australia. Stadium in Melbourne with roof on! Wouldn’t it have been sensible to use it?’ tweeted former England captain Vaughan.
‘Can I also ask why in Sri Lanka where they get huge thunderstorms they cover all the ground & get play back on quickly. Why hasn’t the MCG been totally covered for the last 2 days?’
Friday's match was the fourth to finish without a result since the Super 12 stage began last Saturday.
October is one of Australia’s wettest months, yet the ICC are staging the World Cup now as the hosts are touring India in February.
Of the five games so far in Melbourne, only one has gone ahead as planned, with one other — between England and Ireland — reaching a result despite being cut short by rain. This World Cup has had the joint-most washed out games at an ICC event and more rain is forecast.
Melbourne on Friday was wetter and colder than Inverness and Aberdeen, ruining what should have been a huge occasion at a packed MCG, with both England and Australia knowing defeat would leave them all but eliminated.
The mouth-watering prospect of the big two slugging it out was always in jeopardy, with more rain falling in Melbourne over the last two days than is usually the case for the whole of October and the MCG outfield saturated since Wednesday.
All six teams in England’s group are separated by a single point due to the lack of cricket.

Sunday 30th October Result
Super 12 - Group 2 - Bangladesh v Zimbabwe - Venue: Brisbane Cricket Ground, BrisbaneBangladesh 150-7, Shanto 71, Hossain 29, Shakib 23, B Muzarabani 2-13 Zimbabwe 147-8, Williams 64, Burl 27no, Chakabva 15, Taskin 3-19 Bangladesh win by 3 runs Bangladesh survived an remarkable finale to beat Zimbabwe by three runs in an exciting Men's T20 World Cup game in Brisbane. Needing five from the final ball to successfully chase 151, number 10 Blessing Muzarabani was stumped. But replays showed Tigers wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan had taken the ball in front of the wicket, meaning the delivery was a no-ball and the players - many of whom had shaken hands and left the field - were called back. Only four runs were now needed, and the final ball a free hit, but Muzarabani failed to connect with spinner Mosaddek Hossain's delivery, meaning Bangladesh were able to celebrate for a second time. The win gives Bangladesh, who had reduced Zimbabwe to 35-4 before Sean Williams' brilliant 64, a chance of reaching the semi-finals. They climbed to second in the table but will have to beat India or Pakistan, possibly both, to qualify. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4F1C/production/_127425202_gettyimages-1244339816.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/240/cpsprodpb/7D98/production/_127425123_gettyimages-1244339795-1.jpg

You have to wonder at the professionalism of the England set-up. With the plethora of coaches available, did not one of them take a look at the weather situation during the Ireland game? It's not difficult. Any one of us can check the satellite images on our mobile phones. The message should have gone out to the batsmen to get a move on and get ahead on the D&L scoring system. The fact they left it too late is just shoddy and rank amateurish.

Anyone could have swung the bat for a few balls and we would have won the game by D/L.

Super 12 - Group 1 - England v New Zealand - Brisbane Cricket Ground, Brisbane - England won the toss and decided to bat.England 179-6, Hales 52, Buttler 73, Livingstone 20, Ferguson 2-45 New Zealand 159-6, Williamson 40, Phillips 62, Curran 2-26, Woakes 2-33 England win by 20 runs England earned a nerve-shredding 20-run win over New Zealand to reignite their hopes in the Men's T20 World Cup in Australia. Knowing defeat would all but eliminate them, England survived under intense pressure to successfully defend 179 at the Gabba. After being reduced to 28-2, the Black Caps looked to have swung the game in their favour when Glenn Phillips and captain Kane Williamson combined for a stand of 91 from 59 balls. But, with 61 runs needed from 31 balls, Ben Stokes provided the crucial breakthrough by dismissing Williamson for 40 from 40 balls. From there England impressively turned the screw - and held their nerve under a series of high catches. In the 18th over, the increasingly dependable Sam Curran had Phillips, who was dropped on 15 by Moeen Ali, caught at long-on for 62 from 36 balls to end New Zealand's bid. Wednesday 2nd November Result
Super 12 - Group 2 - Zimbabwe v Netherlands - Venue: Adelaide Oval, Adelaide - Zimbabwe won the toss and decided to bat
Zimbabwe 117 all out (19.2 overs) Raza 40, Williams 28, van Meekeren 3-29 Netherlands 120-5 (18 overs) O'Dowd 52, Cooper 32, Ngarava 2-18
Netherlands win by 5 wickets
Zimbabwe are all but out of the Men's T20 World Cup after a five-wicket defeat by the Netherlands in Adelaide.
Max O'Dowd hit a composed 52 from 46 balls as the Dutch chased down their target of 118 with 12 balls to spare.
Paul van Meekeren had earlier taken 3-29 to help dismiss Zimbabwe for 117, despite Sikandar Raza's 24-ball 40.
Zimbabwe need an extraordinary set of results to reach the semi-finals, including a heavy win over India in their final Group 2 game.
They would also need other games to either be tied or washed out.
The Netherlands, who had already been eliminated, pick up their first victory of the Super 12s stage, though it is not enough to lift them off the bottom of the group.

Super 12 - Group 2 - India v Bangladesh - Venue: Adelaide Oval, Adelaide - Bangladesh won the toss and decided to fieldIndia 184-6, Rahul 50, Kohli 64no, Yadav 30, Ashwin 13no, Mahmud 3-47 Bangladesh 145-6 (16 overs) Das 60, Nurul 25no, Pandya 2-28, Singh 2-38 India win by 5 runs (DLS Method) India moved to the brink of a semi-final spot with a tense five-run victory over Bangladesh in a rain-affected Men's T20 World Cup match in Adelaide. They were given a scare by the Tigers, who raced to 66-0 in seven overs, chasing 185, thanks to Litton Das' 21-ball fifty before rain stopped play. Bangladesh were 17 runs ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) par score but saw their target revised to 151 off 16 overs. A furious Das slipped on the wet pitch and was run out shortly after the restart, with the Tigers then losing regular wickets in a faultless fielding display by India. Needing 20 from the last over, Nurul Hasan hit a six and a four to take the game to the last ball. A six would have made it a tie and a super over, but seamer Arshdeep Singh held his nerve and conceded just a single to leave the Tigers on 145-6. India are now top of Group 2 and victory in their final game against Zimbabwe will guarantee their place in the semi-finals, while Bangladesh need to beat Pakistan and hope other results go their way. So it will be two from three from NZ, Oz or England. As it’s T20 anything could happen. Let’s hope the bad weather has passed and it comes down to who’s the best. The best team is England, I think! They would have beaten NZ by a far greater margin had Moeen not dropped a simple catch, which he would have caught 99/100. But it happens and in the end our bowlers bowled very well esp Sam Curran at the end. Oz will be under so much pressure v Afghanistan and to fail to qualify on their own turf would be a huge surprise and very funny. And of course it is T20 and anything can happen and any team can beat any other team if a batsman or prowler hits form for 10 minutes. Going to be an interesting week end.

Thursday 3rd November Result
Super 12 - Group 2 - Pakistan v South Africa - Venue: Sydney Cricket Ground, SydneyPakistan 185-9, Shadab 52, Iftikhar 51, Haris 28, Nawaz 28, Nortje 4-41 South Africa 108-9 (14 overs) Bavuma 36, Markram 20, Shaheen 3-14 Pakistan win by 33 runs (DLS Method) Pakistan boosted their slim hopes of progressing in the Men's T20 World Cup with a brilliantly frenetic win against South Africa at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Pakistan launched a recovery from 48-4 to post 185-9 and then took regular wickets to deny South Africa in a chase shortened by rain to win by 33 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. The result means Pakistan can still qualify for the semi-finals but need to beat Bangladesh on Sunday and hope South Africa fail to beat the Netherlands or India lose to Zimbabwe. They are indebted to Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed, who combined for a wild partnership of 82 from 35 balls. Shadab smashed 52 from 22 balls and Iftikhar a 35-ball 51 in an infectious display of hitting, to the delight of a raucous, Pakistan-dominated crowd. Then, after Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram put on 49 in 27 balls to give South Africa hope, leg-spinner Shadab removed both within three deliveries. Rain arrived soon after, with the target reduced to 142 off 14 overs, South Africa needing 73 off 30 balls from 69-4. Heinrich Klaasen hinted at an improbable Proteas win by striking three fours in his first four balls after the restart but his dismissal, caught off Shaheen Afridi, allowed Pakistan to clinically close out the match. Previously unbeaten South Africa would have been the first side to confirm a semi-final spot had they won but will still go through by beating the Netherlands on Sunday. Pakistan could go through if they beat Bangladesh and South Africa-Netherlands is washed out. The two sides would then be level on six points, but Pakistan would go through by having three wins to the Proteas' two. Well that Australian performance was bang on average. They won, just but at times looked totally jarred off with the whole competition. They looked as if they’d rather be anywhere except Australia. Starc dropped! What’s that all about unless they wanted to play an extra batsman, which I suppose in Cameron Green they did, not that you’d notice! They still might creep into the knockouts if England mess up tomorrow but I don’t think India, South Africa will worry too much about facing them. Warner and Smith look as if time has caught up with them. Perhaps that debacle v SA knocked more out of them than we thought. (They’ll probably go on to win it now I’ve said all that !!😉)
