Fans don't help themselves sometimes and neither do the players
Mr Lines latest deleted social media post for instance
Not using that to have a go out him particularly.I know he has had his fair share of abuse on social media. THese sorts of things just perpetuate attitudes
Yes - I think it just shows that there is a massive gap between fans perception of the game and players perceptions of the game and very little empathy flowing in either direction.
Fans expect a level of loyalty that is just unrealistic in a professional game with a short career shelf-life - they also expect players to understand their obsession. But I don't think a lot of players really understand the mentality of fans and why most people follow the game. Playing the game professionally and properly supporting a club really are 2 very different things and they may produce contradictory value-sets. Players often seem to think it's fans job just to provide unqualified support and see themselves as having their efforts and skills unfairly criticised all the time by people whose 2nd hand understanding of the game they can't respect. I imagine the default among players is probably to have a certain amount of contempt for fans as a group because they will all have stories of taking s*** from people who from their point of view know nothing about how the game is played in reality.
You can see occasional rows on here between people who are 'in the game' to some degree and people who are fans. You can see that big difference in perspective. It shouldn't be that surprising but there seems a total lack of understanding in both directions.
Irish, that is a measured and fair description of the gap between players and fans and sets out a viewpoint that each side may struggle to accept and understand. Players appear to act from a viewpoint of what’s best for me which is understandable but fans see it very emotionally, again understandably. You are setting out the positions which will be unlikely to change especially in the lower leagues where there are many wannabes, players who want more and higher and fans who want the same thing. Unfortunately the gap between the individual player and the more collective view of the fans seem unlikely to narrow. Plus in our case we have a very frustrated fan base who feel that we could be bigger than we actually are which makes them turn on players sometimes who walk away-or who are let go.😉 UTG!

Too slow, don't tackle, don't track back, don't header, do's loopy corners, tries Hollywood balls. Nah. You mean like the one at the end against barnsley that opened the defence to give Sercombe time to measure his cross for the winner, terrible player definitely not good enough for the mighty Bristol rovers

As an example of Chris Lines at his best, have a look at these highlights from the 3-2 win over Rochdale on a cold February evening in 2018.
His free-kick is perfectly flighted for Joe Partington to put us 2-1 ahead and just for good measure Linesey gets the winner.
But the moment I remember best is the exquisitely weighted and angled first-time one-touch pass out to Lee Brown on the left wing for Browner to cross and Liam Sercombe to equalise Rochdale's early controversial goal.

I think that adds meat to the post by Irish about fans perception and reality

Always said he was class. He is without doubt the best we produced in 20 years. Absolute class.
However, getting past his best and I wouldn’t have offered him 2 years.
We need the next Lines playing now. He is not what he was.
Never saw such a great sight as a driving run by lines streaking at a defence. Also a clever player with brilliant technique.
Also, he was quite a nasty player in a covert way. I’ve seen him show studs quite a few times. Competitive is our Chris, he might not tackle like vinnie Jones but he def had a temper.
I’d say that he never struck me as a club man though. I may be unfair but his comments never suggested some rose tinted love of rovers. I remember him once saying he’d come back “if the contract was right”
Probably just honesty. I mean, players like Chris didn’t need to play for pride as he was worth good money.
Will miss him and I’m sure my grandkids will ask me about him, such is his signature on the ledger of history of Bristol Rovers FC.
