I definitely remember NH saying live interview pre match earlier in season, a playing budget has been ringfenced for January if Darrell feels he needs to add to the squad. This money was irrelevant and separate of the court case outcome. I think almost unanimously, everyone would agree Gaff is the best loan signing this season, so that ring fenced budget would appear ideal to break into as long as all other parameters were met. I'm not advocating breaking the bank, pursuing all month (like Constable-gate) or becoming subservient to player or Cambridge, but surely logic would dictate as long as goalposts haven't moved too much, it would be a fair bet to push the boat out on this one.. Whilst I think Gaff is exactly what we need at this time, credit where it's due....Gaff goals have come from sublime moves/passes most notably contributions from Matty, Brown, Manse, Locks.. I assume that was ring fenced to bring in a number of players, surely we need a goalie, a winger plus another striker, plus possibly a another CM unless Lines can step up his game. I've no idea what players cost but say it's £20K each for a 6 months contract, if so, spending just £25K on a transfer fee could mean we would have to sign one less player, unless gate receipts are well ahead of what we expected? One move we could pull off is guarantee Gaffney a new contract in the summer based on appearances &/or gaols scored? How can a club that is run at a loss 'ringfence' any money at all?
I have ringfenced £6 Million that I intend to spend on 3 25 foot tall solid gold statues of Lee Archer.....

Were we doing that badly before he joined us, if nothing else it's shown Ellis how he needs to lead the line ? We are playing well and have been for a few weeks. I would like RG to join but as others have said to be part of team, not a special player. If we can't sign him move on and hope Ellis has learnt! 3 weeks ago Matty Taylor was new Jamie Vardy, then it was RG , next week it could be someone else. UTG!

Its Cambridge's prerogative to do this. We should have had a firmer agreement with them. I think both sides have been caught out by how well he has done on loan, to be honest. We're suddenly desperate to keep him and its not political for them to let him go easily because their fans are revolting. That's a bit harsh, I'm sure some of them are quite charming! Most of them are charming but some are not !! Been looking at their Gaffney thread, blimey it has got to 34 pages. I'm sure like other teams they don't really care about us but 34 pages you must be joking!! Most don't like us and def don't like DC. They are also p***** off with their own manager and management for dealing in such an inept way over the whole issue. Barnet's forum is also getting in on the act surprise surprise. Could be interesting on Saturday. UTG!

(Source is my mate Terry) I really hope that you're right SO, but I see that one component of the deal has just fallen by the wayside. The Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh, has vetoed Cambridge United's bid to keep Ben Williamson at the Abbey Stadium. So it's possible that as Shaun Derry is one striker down now, that may well affect the Rory Gaffney deal.

Sounds like a change of heart especially now Williamson is not returning.

Cambridge pretty adamant that he's staying with them Looks like Derry is Arthur Daley's love child. Maybe he could just grow up a bit, stop p1ssing around, agree a nominal fee and we can all just get on with things.

Offer Gaffney a contract now for the summer. He'll sign and it'll force Derry's ungentlemanly hand.

If a championship club comes in for Taylor now as the Daily Heil is suggesting today that'll really put the breaks on our promotion push.

Maybe our Chairman could have a word with their Chairman. The etiquette of getting players may not allow this (ethically), but DC is respecting the wishes/actions of Derry as he says he would not like his players being unsettled by another club which is fair enough.

If a championship club comes in for Taylor now as the Daily Heil is suggesting today that'll really put the breaks on our promotion push. It is a recycled non-story from last month. Absolutely nothing substantiated in the article whatsoever, just a load of nonsense thankfully. That's not to say Taylor isn't attracting interest, but this article doesn't mean anything.

Bristol Rovers: eternally too nice.

From today's EP:
SHAUN Derry says the 'door has closed' on Rory Gaffney's hopes of returning to Bristol Rovers unless Cambridge United were to receive an offer that would really make them sit up and take notice. Rovers boss Darrell Clarke has signalled an interest in signing Gaffney, who scored five times in seven games during a month-long loan spell at the Memorial Stadium, on a permanent deal.
Cambridge boss Derry, however, has this morning confirmed that Gaffney, who returned to the Abbey Stadium on Monday, will be a part of their squad when they make the trip to face Crawley Town on Saturday. Speaking to local media in Cambridge this morning, Derry said: "We welcomed Rory back into the club on Monday morning. That was always going to be the case because my only intention to send Rory out on loan was to get him minutes and fitness in readiness for the rest of the season.
"No deal was ever struck and what we need now is for Rory to be the same animal he has been with Bristol Rovers for the last four or five weeks. It is now up to Rory to show he wants to play for Cambridge because we are the club that brought him over from Ireland. He will definitely be involved with us on Saturday and I am delighted that he is. Football moves really quickly and the door for him at Bristol is gone in my eyes and one is opening here for him at Cambridge. I think I would be an absolute fool to say that a deal definitely won't take place because if we got a really good offer we'd have to look at it, but I want him to be here and do well with us for the rest of the season."
Mind you I gave up believing totally what managers and Chairmen said years ago and this could just be brinkmanship by Cambridge, but they are a forward down. Just what do you believe, especially as BRFC are involved?
