Let's be honest. We need Gaffney, and relying on Bliss etc again is not good enough for our future. We want to go places, not be an indifferent going no-where team. Gaffney has had a big impact on our team as a whole, he fits in well with JE and Matty and his goals have been in the right games at the right time. Get him, pay him and play him. Gaffney is a solution staring us in the face. And we want to go up automatically. Period. I think we all agree that he has had a great impact and if we could get him without breaking the bank or upsetting the balance or spirit of the squad, then we should.
However if he, or more likely Cambridge, play silly buggers for too long then we must move on before it becomes too much of a disruption.
DC found Gaffney - a player none of us (except Astafjevs) had heard of before - he can find another if need be.

one swallow doesn't make a summer
there's a reason no one was queuing up for him 5 weeks ago (tho I don't know what it is - injury-prone, upset someone at Cambridge, other?)

Five swallows in seven games does suggest decent weather though.
His injury was an issue but he looks well over it now, and I'd imagine there was no queue primarily because he wasn't available for very long before we got him.

Agree about not overstretching the bank balance, but I don't think we should look this gift horse in the mouth. How many other players will we have to try out before finding one as good as this, and before a promotion slot is lost ? That's the question. To repeat again, Gaffney is a good target man, holds up well, passes (normally) well, has a few tricks up his sleeve, and now scores goals - and the effect is that confidence and consistency, at home especially, has spread through the rest of the team. It doesn't matter in the slightest what his record is / was at Cambridge, it's what he does for us that counts.

A week in football - 4 goals in two games - suddenly the whole world wants you. Just being realistic but a few short weeks ago no one really wanted Rory, he himself said he was surprised to get a move here. Sanity will return and people will recall he has played just 12 FL matches in L2 and a few for Limerick in Ireland. He is not yet Lionel Messi as suggested in some articles. If we want him badly enough we will get him for a fee and possibly an extended 18 month deal to give him extra security & to justify the fee. Hope he rejoins us but if he doesn't there is still Nathan.....! I agree, whilst he has done well in the last couple of games I wouldn't think he was worth a fee. There are plenty of strikers about who can equally do a job at this level if given the chance I'm sure. It's Not offen a loan player comes in and does a job for us granted but who's to say that was his purple patch and he wouldn't score again......worth a punt by offering him a deal, him but paying a fee? I'm out...

Were we doing that badly before he joined us, if nothing else it's shown Ellis how he needs to lead the line ?

7 goals in 8 starts in English football, we'd have to be morons to not force this deal through! Even if he doesn't continue banging in braces he still contributes a heck of a lot to the side and compliments Matty Taylor tremendously.
It's not like Cambridge will be asking for anything near the type of money Rovers are happy to waste on court and lawyer fees.

At the end of the day it's going to come down to money, are we prepared to pay Cambridge what they value him at, do we value him enough to pay it ?

From today's Bristol Post . . . From today's Cambridge News: However, Derry said he would talk to Gaffney on his return to get the player's thoughts on where he sees his future. He said: "The whole idea of Rory going away was to get him games and consistency in his performances and he has done very well. "I'm so pleased for him that he has done very well, but let's not forget Rory has scored goals for Bristol Rovers and that's the club he has been playing for. " The conversation I have to have with Rory is to see what type of mindset he's in coming back to Cambridge. " When you've got someone with six months left on his contract, he needs to really feel he belongs at a place. " If he doesn't feel he belongs here, we have to do a deal and we have to look forward and you make a sacrifice with somebody who for the last three or four weeks has done very well individually. so ... if it comes to money and a fee, would we be asked to pay in the region of say £100,000...................at his current strike rate ,and IF he continues to go at that rate, then money well spent, as it would at least give us a play - off berth and a chance of a tilt for that Wembley spot === fee covered and a huge profit as a result,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and possibly some decent merchandise!!! lol!!

First there is a big IF in there. Secondly if he is worth that with 6 months on contract then what wages will be asked for?

I believe Shane Long cost £75,000, one of the Hunt brothers (can't remember which one) cost £25,000 when they were brought from Ireland, there's no way on this earth should we be paying stupid money for Gaffney. The ball is in Cambridge Utd's court, there is a contract in place with Gaffney, I trust DC to use his usual sound practice of not paying over the odds for this player.

That's just a massive distraction tactic from Derry aimed at their fans. I wouldn't be impressed if I was one of them. "If he leaves and does well, its not my fault".

I definitely remember NH saying live interview pre match earlier in season, a playing budget has been ringfenced for January if Darrell feels he needs to add to the squad. This money was irrelevant and separate of the court case outcome.
I think almost unanimously, everyone would agree Gaff is the best loan signing this season, so that ring fenced budget would appear ideal to break into as long as all other parameters were met.
I'm not advocating breaking the bank, pursuing all month (like Constable-gate) or becoming subservient to player or Cambridge, but surely logic would dictate as long as goalposts haven't moved too much, it would be a fair bet to push the boat out on this one..
Whilst I think Gaff is exactly what we need at this time, credit where it's due....Gaff goals have come from sublime moves/passes most notably contributions from Matty, Brown, Manse, Locks..

I think the boys doing the hard work on a rolling contract would be rightly pissed off if Gaff came in on big money and that would upset the applecart for sure. If he comes it's on our terms I say.

I assume that was ring fenced to bring in a number of players, surely we need a goalie, a winger plus another striker, plus possibly a another CM unless Lines can step up his game. I've no idea what players cost but say it's £20K each for a 6 months contract, if so, spending just £25K on a transfer fee could mean we would have to sign one less player, unless gate receipts are well ahead of what we expected? One move we could pull off is guarantee Gaffney a new contract in the summer based on appearances &/or gaols scored?
