Harrold linked with Crawley Town.... crawley target strikerCrawley are hoping to complete the signing of striker Matt Harrold this week. Harrold is poised to join Reds from Bristol Rovers after turning down a move to Northampton Town. Boss John Gregory has identified the 6ft 1in former Yeovil and Wycombe targetman as the ideal player to lead the line in a new-look attack next season. Harrold, 29, scored seven goals in 36 games for Rovers as they were relegated from League Two last season but offers the physical presence Crawley have lacked since the departure of Gary Alexander in January. Gregory is confident of completing one signing today with another two new faces expected by the weekend. Reds had hoped to wrap up a deal for former Albion goalkeeper Mitch Walker yesterday but they could not reach an agreement with Dover Athletic over a fee for the 22-year-old England C international. Crawley are also among a number of clubs battling to sign midfielder John-Joe O’Toole after his departure from Bristol Rovers.

Best of luck to him as he's a thoroughly decent bloke.
No big loss though.

Hop in, Matty I've got the engine running. No no, Matt you need to turn to face the car door to get in it. What you've done there is tried to back in, gone about a yard wide and ended up on your arse.

Only in football can individuals fail so badly and then get a promotion (two leagues).
Matt's a nice bloke, but it does leave a bitter taste in my mouth when players jump ship, especially after standing by them during long term injuries.
However, the positive in this deal is that it will free up wages that no doubt could be spent on two players (I would imagine he is on a fair wack). It also gives us an opportunity for a fresh start (bar Brunt) up front. I'm convinced Harrold would hit goals in the conference, but sometimes its best for all parties if others are given a chance.

Agree with this. Had Harrold become available now, from somewhere else, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be trying to get him, so why keep hold of him?

Perhaps Rovers are trying to get rid of him. If he hadn't had the contract extension option then I imagine he would have been released as well.
If he goes best of luck to him. Not the greatest ever, but seemed a decent honest pro to me on the face of it. We might have helped him if we had put any decent crosses in the box. The few we did usually resulted in something

Agreed, Rovers may be trying to get rid of him (and I wouldn't blame them if that was the case). Like I said before though, perhaps its best for all parties if we parted ways. I still can't get my head around how individuals can earn a promotion (two leagues) after such failure! Only in football eh!

it's hard to comprehend who somebody how was so useless for us last season can be in demand this summer, as far as being a "true pro" what did he actually do to prove that last season in the quarters/

The club now has a strategy of signing younger players on short term contracts and has been actively circulating the older players on the longer term/ higher paid contracts. Thats why it is unlikely we will sign any older players such as Cureton and the like

Not quite right - please see politics.

You cant win anything with all young players. At least Matty was a League 2 standard player. Just hope if he does go we REPLACE him with someone better. Not convinced at the present time but hope that DC proves me wrong. Please ,please Board and Manager don't do it on the cheap- cheap ends in failure. I am not saying pay top end but at least reasonable.

On the same wage as JJoT. Looked ok when Buckle was here. Crawley fans thought he looked good against them.
As Lord Justice Gashead said, he will never score with his back to goal, but I did think he might be converted to a CB, untill I saw his defending that led to the Mansfield goal.

If Harrold goes we won't have any players apart from those in the defensive areas who have that wise old head that is essential in any team. It was a key reason as to why we went down (along with the goals of course) last season. We missed someone in centre of the park who could take responsibility and drive the team forward. We (apparently) went for Disley so that gives me hope that we are not abandoning wise heads over youth. I will be a bit alarmed though come the start of the season if we don't bring any experience in.

By the way, if Matt stays - great, if he goes - good luck.
One thing that I used to be proud of was the way in which ex-Rovers players were always given a good welcome when they returned with the opposition, unlike most other clubs. It seems like that is another Bristol Rovers tradition that seems to be fading away.

Is there any transfer fee involved? Or is it a free?

Good luck, you will not be missed in this club BUT i bet you do very well in your new club !
WHY ??
Because they will play to your strengths and not your weakness of lumping the ball up to you with your back to goal.
BTW IS there a space in your car for Brunt as well ??

I'd expect better from you Henbury. You've managed to piss off two of our strike force in one post. The Matt Harrold debate has gone on for 2 seasons or more so I'll not repeat it, but why stick the knife into Ryan Brunt? It is not his fault that he was injured all of last season and like Harrold, he has worked very hard to regain his fitness. If we can hold onto him, Brunt will score plenty in the Conference. If we lose them both, then let's show the dignity that should come with being a Rovers supporter.

We never played to his strengths ever, constant huff ball all the time with his back to goal was never Matts Game, put a good cross over and i would put Money on Matt getting on the end of it and Ryan is much the same, put the ball in front of him and he will do the business I just hope & pray the WC plays "Football" and not "Wosh" football next season or i feel we are in for a LONG season
