"Being played" is the right way to put it. The link I posted on the "R word" thread included this ... "The 48-year-old father of four was educated at Westminster School and Boston University and stated that he had been a passionate football fan all of his life and that he was excited to be involved with the club. He also recognized the potential of the club and said that it was his family’s wish to maintain the tradition that Bristol Rovers have of being a family club." So the term "family club" is used as a positive when it suits but when it doesn't suit, because Joey Barton is appointed, we are encouraged to think and say that the "family club" never actually existed. This is not an isolated example, we've continually been played games with right from the 12 world class stadium experts through "Garnerball" and now beyond. The thing is, gradually, with each addition to the pile of rubbish we have been fed, the continued spin on what is plain to see and with each bad decision taken, the clock ticks nearer the inevitable ending. With each new event a small number of previously positive / ambivalent supporters start to ask questions and start to come to the conclusion that things are not panning out well. It’s a simple game of numbers and at some point soon the owners quote from early in his tenure “I will stay as long as I am wanted” will be called into play. It’s very hard to take and it’s very frustrating to watch as a gas head! It’s no longer even about some knowing more than others.... you don’t need to be in the know to see what a laughing stock the whole situation is. It has gradually moved from just off the pitch events to on the pitch events as well which is probably the game changer. I don’t believe there are many genuine Gas Heads who take any comfort from saying things like I have said above, or indeed the vast majority of critical comments from others who share the same view. It’s just plain to see, right under the supporters noses. I admire those who can continue to see the positives in the current state the club is in, I genuinely do! But when people with the experience and history with the club are all saying the same things it rings massive alarm bells and raises res flags all over the place for me. It also reaffirms for me that my initial gut instinct and subsequent facts as I know them to be was spot on. I firmly believe it’s now about the state the club is in when crunch time comes rather than somehow there will be a happy ending. Plenty of good points in there, but one that's worth highlighting. There are some who take a different view of the owner and of this appointment who seem to think that there's some pleasure being found in criticism, I can assure them that's not the case. I would be delighted if Wael got rid of Barton, apologised for bringing him here and then suddenly found a formula to run the club efficiently and in a way that he was able to sustain. I'm not expecting CL football like that deluded mob down at the DSS Arena, just Bristol Rovers, ambling along in the 3rd tier, threatening occasionally to get into the 2nd division, and even more occasionally getting there for a while. But right now it's very difficult to see how this ends in a way that isn't bad for Rovers and bad for Wael.

It also reaffirms for me that my initial gut instinct and subsequent facts as I know them to be was spot on. I firmly believe it’s now about the state the club is in when crunch time comes rather than somehow there will be a happy ending. Well, let’s be clear on one thing: Wael was using a figure of speech when he said he would be here as long as he is wanted. Just before he capitalised the debt things were at an all time low with regards to his standing and it seemed there was no fear of him walking away. Then he capitalised the debt and overnight became the darling of the fanbase again. I suspect he gets too much out of being involved in a football to walk away and especially when he has sunk so much money into it. It is, simply put, not rational to just walk away from such a significant investment of your money. He will want to recoup something and so it will need someone with deep pockets to call Wael’s bluff. Higgs might have been incompetent himself but the debts were not insurmountable under him. Some ~18 million spent later and there is going to be no-one willing to give Wael all his money back for a club in league one club with a tinpot stadium, rewarding him for his mistakes. Wael is the only game in town and so he can run the club like his own personal fiefdom with scant regard for the “traditions” of the club, or that some of it’s fans think of it as a family club of a higher moral standing than City if not a more fashionable one. We are both stuck with each other, it seems to me and I suspect that Wael is going to remain at the helm for some considerable time as a result. I just hope, at some point, he wakes up and brings in some outside help to sort the whole lot out. I don’t disagree with any of that and the only thing I would add is that there will be no choice when the money runs out. He either then moves on, instigates a clever plan which nobody else is aware of ( I hope there is one) or sinks the whole thing.

I’m certainly not a fan of the appointment but I can’t honestly say I feel as strongly as others. To me the Barton appointment is a massive, massive risk and it’s not one I would have taken! The main issue for me is more to do with the overall on field plan. Barton is just another huge sign that there is no plan, it’s reactionary, hasty, ill thought through and desperate. Exactly the same as everything else (almost without exception) that the shambolic leadership at the club oversee. With the utter s**t show going on at rovers I am intrigued to understand why our leadership haven’t made more of the one seemingly positive which is the training ground. I took a drive out there on Sunday and it looks an impressive site with huge potential. Without sounding rude, it seems to me that the leadership are too stupid to make more of that positive situation and really engage with the supporters to let them know the positive work that is going on. Some plans, CGI’s and a webcam showing progress would be a massive lift amongst the negative mood of the support base and wider issues in society at present. These things would cost little but would generate massive good will and pr, even if it did somewhat mask the bigger picture. I really do despair that this opportunity hasn’t been jumped all over in a more professional and opportunistic way.

He has found the club is dysfunctional to an extent he had not expected and it showed in his demeanor last night You write that as a fact, is it? To me he looked and sounded a bit dismayed, as though the task he's undertaken is bigger than he thought it would be, although of course I can't be certain that is the reason. But the club being dysfunctional can be shown by measuring performance on and off the pitch. If we were functioning properly, given the resources at our disposal, we would have a better football team and a business operating at a much more sustainable level. We used to think the reason for our under performance was lack of money but over the past five years that theory has been demolished because money has been thrown at the club and yet we still underperform. The obvious conclusion is that, as an organisation, we are highly dysfunctional.

As Barton's sacking isn't going to come just be people typing on an internet forum... I'm aware, but what else is there to do? on the one hand we can be keyboard warriors in this day and age. There are practical things we could do like online petitions for example, media flyers to alert media to fans concerns. In normal times organise demo’s, Blackburn and Coventry, Pompey and Charlton fans etc etc could probably teach us a thing or two. On the other hand though we don’t want to wake up tomorrow morning to find someone has committed suicide, because we keep naming them and calling for their head. This thread is actually the woke thread. I haven’t given up on any of the BFC Barton fan club waking up from their fantasy world where Garner and Tisdale were rubbish and passionate Barton and Hill was all we needed, and realise us Duckbills on this thread were right all along. The decline and fall of our beloved club is more than that. we just have to keep politely putting a reasoned argument, and everyone control their own spin and hyperbole.

I really do despair that this opportunity hasn’t been jumped all over in a more professional and opportunistic way. I think the reason that only fans seem interested in publicising the training ground may be because the club are embarrassed over the way it is being developed. I agree the size of the site offers huge potential but is a gym in an old barn and a 4000 square foot club house to a 1990 design what we expect from a professional football club in 2021 ? Many months ago Wael waved a piece of paper to participants at a Zoom conference which he said contained the new design of the inside of the club house, the analysis suite etc, but despite promises they have never been revealed to us. The gym was shown very briefly in an interview with George Williams and, to say the least, it did not look very impressive. The construction work has meandered on at a snails pace for many months when with any normal development of this size it would have been completed much more quickly. And no plans or artists impressions have ever been offered to show how the training ground will look when it is finished. The defensiveness of the club was illustrated when a spokesmen said a few weeks ago (echoing Womble's words) that the club house could be extended in size in the future. Is this a normal thing to say when the building isn't yet finished ? Surely you would assess what your space requirements will be in the foreseeable future and build to that size. The only explanation for using 1990 plans rather that commissioning new bespoke ones would be to allow a quick construction timescale but that has certainly not been the case. IMO there is something not right about this development.

It will be interesting to see what the end product is but will be disappointing if we end up with something that is inferior to what other clubs have had for 20 yrs!

As much as I dislike them the fact is they are an established championship club with a fantastic stadium and training ground. If they are likely to exit the championship anytime soon it is highly likely to be to the premier league. We are a poor league 1 club likely to exit league 1 to league 2. They have invested heavily and I fear at some point soon that investment will take them to the premier league. It’s like comparing apples with pears. I dislike them but wouldn’t say they are dysfunctional. I guess all of football could be described as a dysfunctional business.

Ashton Gate's not to my taste at all, but it has undergone fantastic investment to build something bigger and better on the site of the club's historical predecessor, Bristol City FC. The 1982 successors are lucky to have an owner who has built them something real, however vain his spending on and sacking for promotion might me.

I don't post on here very often. I am a season ticket holder & so will be getting my £285 back for this season, and won't shell out whilst Barton is there. Post Covid I will walk up to Mangotsfield United. I am also a season ticket holder and so will voice my disgust at the appointment at the next general meeting that the president convenes. It won't change anything, but it'll make me feel better. Have I missed something? Are the club refunding season tickets?

Tonight's first half injury time own goal and 88th minute losing goal leaves them 10 points off of 6th place and with a dire goal difference. So whatever Stevie Boy has pumped in this year is lost with nothing to show for it. Quite funny considering they were first or second after half a dozen games and the Hartcliffe Massive would have been dreaming of punch ups with Scousers in front of the charred remains of The Liver Building.

Remember where Dwane Sports are a registered company, and where Al Qadi is domicile. Let's get our own house in order. However high and however vain the Lansdowne losses are, his is an ownership of immense investment and developmental progress. Just look at the Memorial Ground!

Shhhhhhheeeeeeee..... anyways. Kneejerk alarm bell reaction there... As far as we're aware, no refund offered just yet. When we're relegated, will they become cheaper because we're consuming an inferior product?

Its becoming increasingly more depressing every time i tune in, to get hit by Joey B unfit to manage Bristol Rovers. Made worst with all the other negatives such as as not supporting the club until Wael and JB are gone and that we are certs for relegation! Its getting to the stage that i come stright back out as the forum, without reading any recent quotes as the needle appears to be well and truely stuck, we are in danger of becoming a 'one trick pony' and it implies that we are all of the same opinion. I think this is felt on both sides, and on the third side also mention earlier. Don't let it get you down, mate. If we disagree, and we won't move towards a shared opinion, that doesn't mean I don't think you a mate or a good bloke. As for someone's comments about separate thread for separate opinions, I don't think it's necessary, but they already exist anyway. This thread is pretty anti-Barton, as titled. There are now at least three pro-Barton threads. Not all are clearly titled, but two now are. I might quit Guzzler for a bit too, not only to please trymer who has requested it more than once, but I'll just engage when it's interesting. Don't give up, me old interceptor. We can disagree about one thing.

I suspect that HL have put many hundreds of thousands more into the exchequer's coffers than you or I ever will, and in 2019 were employing 1610 people in Bristol. So yes, shame on those 2 local boys made good, and let's double down on our green eyed nastiness because one of them operates within tax laws and is domiciled outside of the UK. If you have an issue with tax laws it needs to be taken up with Westminster, not with people acting within the system that successive governments, both blue and red, have deemed fit for purpose. Tell you what, I would swap their tax exile for our pathetic excuse for a tax exiled company, all day long.
