Union 2 Dortmund 0. Just the 4 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga then! Madness. I know it won't last, but enjoying it while it does.

After a disappointing loss to lowly Bochum last week... Union were still clinging on to top spot. All looked like changing yesterday, Union 0-1 to Monchengladbach with just over 10 minutes left on the clock. Hey, it was nice while it lasted. Union equalized on 79 mins. Union winner on 90+7. UNVEU. Union were 500-1 to win the Bundesliga at the start of the season. Currently best odds 66-1.

Is this a German equivalent to Leicester winning the PL? There are some parallels... though Leicester were as wide as 5000-1 to win the premiersh*t after just avoiding relegation the previous season. Union were 5th last year - would have been 4th but for a poor February after losing Max Kruse to Wolfsburg in the January window. In terms of Union's history (they were never really a force even in the East German Oberliga) - them winning the Bundesliga would be a bigger shock. Perhaps mainly because they would have to beat Bayern... 2nd would be the equivalent of Leicester winning the Premiersh*t IMHO. Eisern Union!

Bayern will identify your most influential player and then buy him in the Jan window. It's what they do. They've been doing it to Dortmund for years. Lewendoski, Hummels, Götze are just three that come to mind (all from Dortmund), with the Götze transfer being announced just one week before the Bayern v Dortmund Champions League Final ! That was a classic case of how to unsettle your main opponents before a big game. Just like Leicester were, Union are on a roll. Can they keep it going? Most fans of German football would love to see ANYONE beat Bayern to the title.

Christ, when you've got Kevin Behrens coming off the bench effecting games everything must be going for you. I can't see them carrying it on through, they scraped past Gladbach this weekend, impressively I must add but I just don't think the depth is there.

I can't see them carrying it on through, they scraped past Gladbach this weekend, impressively I must add but I just don't think the depth is there. Everything has been going Union's way for the last 4 years. Pretty much every window they lose their best player(s). The miracle is re-investing that money in cast-offs from other Clubs or taking a gamble on young unproven players - and consistently making the team better. The big thing for me is the effort these players always put in. Invariably the underdogs. They never lose a 50/50 ball. They always look hungry. The 'big' Clubs hate playing them. Feels like the players would bleed for the Club - just like the fans did back in 2004! What brilliant marketing - pay your blood donation money to the Football Club. Having said all that - I don't think they have much strength in depth. But neither did Leicester when they won the premiersh*t. Leicester just had an unbelievably lucky season (you make your own luck) with never losing key players to injury. Anyway Union top of the Bundesliga in November! Happy days. If Carlsberg did a Football Club, it would look like Union. UNVEU.

SC Freiburg 4 (Grifo (4 pen, 6 , 20 pen), Gregoritsch (45'+1) FC Union Berlin 1 (Monteiro Pinto Leite sent off 19, Michel 84 pen)
Freiburg now up to 2nd in the league, Union are in 5th.
Freiburg's Vincenzo Grifo scored the quickest Bundesliga hat-trick in 31 years to lead his team to a 4-1 victory over 10-man Union Berlin on Sunday, pipping them to the post for second place at the start of the Bundesliga's World Cup break.
The Italy international opened his account after four minutes with a well-struck penalty before doubling their lead only two minutes later when he launched and then completed a quick break with Michael Gregoritsch.
Union had a chance to pull a goal back when they earned their own spot kick in the ninth minute but Robin Knoche hit the post, and to make matters worse for the visitors, Diogo Leite was sent off for a last-man foul a little later, earning Freiburg another penalty.
Grifo again stepped up to convert it and complete his first ever Bundesliga hat-trick in the 20th minute while taking his season tally to nine league goals.
Gregoritsch turned from provider to scorer on the stroke of halftime, chipping the ball over the Union keeper to put the game to bed.
Freiburg, playing their best ever Bundesliga season, moved up to 30 points, four behind leaders Bayern Munich.
Union, who have managed just one win from their last five matches, dropped to fifth on 27. They are level with fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, while RB Leipzig are in third on 28.
The Bundesliga goes into a prolonged break following this weekend’s matches due to the start of the World Cup in Qatar next weekend and will resume on Jan. 20.

Fun while it lasted but the last three results are that 4-1 loss, 2-2 draw at home to Augsberg, and a 5-0 thrashing at Leverkeusen. Looks like the wheels, exhaust and doors have all fallen off... But it doesn't matter. Next big event at the An der Alten Foresterei is Weinachtsingen. www.fc-union-berlin.de/de/union-live/news/verein/Weihnachtssingen-2022-3002R/ I'll be there in spirit. Hopefully they'll stream some of it. Eisern Union.

It is interesting to note what is considered a hat-trick in Germany. It is only classed as a hat-trick if all the goals are scored in the same half, and they must be three consecutive goals for the team. If another player on the team scores inbetween the three goals, then it's not a hat-trick! Stupid Germans eh!

Wondering what your thoughts about this PL transfer was - Kevin Schade [Freiburg - Brentford] Loan ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17673/production/_128195859_kev1.jpgBrentford have signed Freiburg forward Kevin Schade on loan until the end of the season. The Bees expect to make the deal permanent for a club-record undisclosed fee in the summer, with Schade set to sign a five-year contract. The Germany Under-21 international can fill a variety of attacking roles and will provide support for Ivan Toney. "I think Kevin is a typical Brentford signing," Bees boss Thomas Frank told the club's website. "He is a young, promising talent that we see a big potential in. We have been following him for a while and we think he will suit our style of play." While the knee injury Toney sustained at West Ham on 30 December was deemed "not significant", the striker's short-term future remains uncertain as he has been charged by the FA with 262 breaches of betting rules. Schade made his first-team debut for Freiburg in August 2021 and has scored four goals in 21 appearances for the Bundesliga side. The 21-year-old was born to a German mother and Nigerian father and is eligible to represent both Germany and Nigeria at international level. He has scored four goals in five appearances for Germany Under-21s. Frank added: "He can play anywhere across our front three positions. He could play for us on either wing or as the central striker. "He has great pace and is very promising in the way he runs behind defences." Brentford are ninth in the Premier League table after beating Liverpool 3-1 at the Community Stadium on Monday.

Christian Streich: The skinny-dipping managerial maverick shaking up the Bundesliga..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D694/production/_128323945_gettyimages-1239840267.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/38C4/production/_128323541_streich_getty.jpgAs his team sealed a 2-0 victory over Cologne in November, Christian Streich's eyes fooled with tears. He dabbed at them as he stared out at the pitch, then turned, punched the air and hugged each of his fellow coaches. Note, 'fellow coaches'. This is an important point to Streich. Those alongside him in the Freiburg dugout are not his coaching staff or assistants. Streich - nominally the head coach - insists they have played an equal and important part in Freiburg's achievement, and should be recognised as such. The win over Cologne had taken the long-time relegation battlers from one of Germany's Black Forest backwaters, to second in the Bundesliga, just a point behind 10-time defending champions Bayern Munich. After the game, reporters constantly questioned Streich about his emotions. "It was just the wind in my eyes," he said. No-one was convinced. His team are on the move. And they are moving Streich and a whole city in the process. Full Article on the link below:www.bbc.co.uk/sport/64303754

Couple of televised games from the Bundesliga this evening. Sky Sports Mix, free on my TV and Bet365. Mainz / Dortmund 5:30pm kick off. Then the 'big one', Werder Bremen vs Union Berlin 7:30pm. Without tempting fate a win would put Union 2nd. Though Frankfurt, currently level on points with them, would have a game in hand. UNVEU.

Werder Bremen had a comedy goal-keeper and a Keystone Kops attitude to defending. That helped. Union never really looked in trouble after going 2-1 up early in the 2nd half. With German efficiency - exactly 1/2 way through the season. Every team has played everyone once. Every team has played 17 games. Bayern 36 Union 33 Plastic RB 32 Frankfurt 31 Dortmund 31 Freiburg 31 Eisern Union! And Hertha in an automatic relegation place. LOL.

And today Hertha 0 Union 2. Pretty sure that's the 5th straight derby win. It just gets better and better...

Union 2 Mainz 1. Currently top. If Wolsfberg can avoid defeat against Bayern this afternoon, then Union stay top. Not bad for a Club that was playing in the 4th tier in 2005/6 with average gates of 6,000.
