Saturday 20th April 2024 - German Bundesliga
1. FC Union Berlin 1 (Vertessen 90) Bayern Munich 5 (Kane 45+1 & 61 assist)ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/20/aa20ace2-6a63-4533-8251-f20e97be9779.jpgHarry Kane notched his 40th goal of the season as Bayern Munich demolished Union Berlin 5-1 in the German capital on Saturday. Kane planted a fine 25-yard free-kick home to score his 33rd league goal of the season - 40 in all competitions - after Leon Goretzka opened the scoring with an equally emphatic finish. Bayern exerted intense dominance on their relegation-threatened opponents in the second half as Thomas Muller scored a brace on his 400th start for the Bavarians, either side of a Mathys Tel goal. Yorbe Vertessen struck a late consolation to avoid his side extending their goalless run to four consecutive matches. Bayern can only contest for a best possible second-place finish in the Bundesliga after Bayern Leverkusen secured the league title last weekend. The feat broke Bayern's 11-year-long streak of retaining the title. Thomas Tuchel's side sit three points clear of third-placed Stuttgart, who have a game in hand. But the heavy defeat plunges Union Berlin into uncertainty, just three points off Mainz who occupy the relegation play-off spot. Union's battle against the drop will likely hinge on their seismic clash with Bochum, who sit one place and two points below them, on May 5th. Leverkusen secured their first German title with five games to spare last Sunday, and now aim to record the first unbeaten campaign in the Bundesliga. Niclas Fullkrug gave hosts Dortmund an 81st-minute lead on Sunday. But Stanisic struck in the seventh minute of added time to make it 45 games unbeaten in all competitions. The Croatia defender, on loan from Bayern Munich, headed home from a Florian Wirtz corner even later than when Jeremie Frimpong maintained this season's unbeaten record in midweek. Xabi Alonso's side beat West Ham 3-1 win on aggregate in the Europa League quarter-finals but needed an 89th-minute goal from Frimpong on Thursday to salvage a 1-1 draw in the second leg and keep their run going. "We just don't want to lose," Alonso told DAZN. "The goal was very emotional, celebrating with the fans was very nice and it means a lot to us all. "We're still waiting for our big party. Now we'll recover a bit and then prepare well for Stuttgart [next Saturday], which will be a very exciting game." Other ScoresWerder Bremen 2 Stuttgart 1 Freiberg 1 Mainz 1

Other ScoresWerder Bremen 2 Stuttgart 1 Freiberg 1 Mainz 1 Celebrating the Mainz draw. They've been on a bit of a run recently and Union are not out of danger yet. But should Union go down - in a strange way, it won't matter. Because that's the sort of Club they are. UNVEU.

Very very nervous viewing. Had given up on Koln salvaging a point. But was told in the pub later and celebrated accordingly! Union play Bochum and Koln in 2 mega 6 pointers. So it's effectively one from 3 for the 3rd bottom play-off spot. Anything could happen and probably will...

Champions League one season, Bundesliga 2 the next. Would make a good trivia question. Odds on bottom 3 finish: Koln 1/100 (they've gone) Mainz 11/10 Bochum 11/8 Union 5/1 I'm thinking of sticking £10 on Union to go down. The 'emotional hedge bet'. Union stay up. I'm happy. Hey, it was only a tenner. Union go down, I win £50 and spend the next couple of days drowning my sorrows for free. But ultimately... it doesn't really matter if they go down. They have their unique culture. That's what's important.

My teams have always been West Ham since 1975 and BRFC since 1981, we don't half pick them...
