With BFC Dynamo losing their promotion play-off final from the 4th tier Regionlliga to VfB Oldenburg (2-3 on aggregate) I think that's it for the German domestic season. I think Germany might give England a bit of a revenge stuffing for the Euros. Spanish La Liga 2 play-off final doesn't conclude until Sunday 19th June. About 6 weeks before the new season starts? Mad. Gerona / Tenerife contest the two legged play-off.

These Nation League games are a good idea to replace the boring friendlies, as they do introduce an element of competition.....but the timing? Oh dear. Last week England players were on the lash in Ibiza! They are human and they need a break sometime. Playing these games now is madness.

Going back to the HB game what struck me was the intensity of colour the fans and respective teams wear like a wall of yellow / red/ blue across the stadium,.. and the outstanding thing was fans.... on the terrace....mid game drinking 🍺🍺🍺 Yes you.can get beer and drink it in your seat. They even have people walking round with a canister of beer on their backs so you can get a beer without leaving your seat. Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi has said goodbye to his Union Berlin team-mates, with the 24-year-old expected to make a £17.5m move to Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest. Just wondering if you know anything about him or seen him play, now he could be coming to England.

I notched up about 8-10 Union games (on TV). Union sell their best players pretty much every season. The miracle is finding decent replacements year after year when financially they just shouldn't be able to compete in the top half of the Bundesliga. Losing Max Kruse in the January to Wolfsburg ultimately cost them a Champions League place. Eisern Union! I'll be looking out for Forest next year. UNVEU.

Union Berlin 3 Hertha Berlin 1 (late consolation goal). Union win for the 4th straight time in the local derby. A real shame this wasn't chosen as one of the televised games as there's always a terrific atmosphere at the Stadion An der Alte Forestei. A Buckhurst Hill, Union Berlin, Sunderland triple yesterday. Hoorah.

I watched Eintracht v Bayern. It ended 1-6. Bayern, as always, look very formidable. Their style has changed with Mane upfront instead of Lewandowski. Eintracht looked terrible defensively. It was 5-0 at HT and it could have been 8 or 9!
Next game for Eintracht is the midweek game of Cup Winners against Real Madrid. After the horror show against Bayern I don't think many Eintracht fans are looking forward to it !

Interesting to see that their best midfield player is Jamal Musiala. He does look fantastic. For Eintracht the focus this season will be on the Champs League. Getting past the group stage will be seen as success, although it looks as though Filip Kostic could be going to Juventus, which will be a huge blow.

Mainz 0 Union Berlin 0. Quite a few Bundesliga games are available on Skybet, and this was one of them. A very hard fought 0-0 draw. Both defences well on top. Union were a bit predictable with their long ball game which Mainz dealt with easily. Despite a pretty brutal battle - there were no yellow cards, no-one rolling around feigning injury, no-one waving imaginary cards at the referee. As the commentators said a number of times - "no-one is going to want to play against Mainz or Union". Which I take as high praise. After Union's 5th place finish last year (and Europa football), I think they will be stretched and it could be a long hard season. But they have over-performed in each of the last 4 years, so you never know. Und Nielmals Vergessen Eisern Union.

Missed the Union RB vs Leipzig game as the pub was strangely reluctant to turn off one of the TVs from the Arsenal game. Hey ho. Caught up with the highlights. Another 'big' Club with pots of cash turns and big ideas turns up at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei and gets their arses kicked. Union 2 Plastic Leipzig 1 (a late consolation from a corner). Eisern!
Edit: Just found out that Union have been given permission to play their Europa League fixtures at home. Previously they were forced to play at the soulless Olympiastadion, home off the once big Club Hertha Berlin. This is part of a pilot scheme to allow standing at European fixtures. Visitors to the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei - be afraid. Be very afraid.

Eintracht hammered Leipzeig 4-0. It could/should have been a lot more.

1.FC Koln 0 (Kilian 81 sent off) Union Berlin 1 (Hubers 3 og & Missed Pen Siebatcheu 10) - Attendance: 49,500.Union Berlin went top of the German Bundesliga for the first in their history by edging past Cologne. An early own goal by Timo Hubers separated the sides, before Union's Jordan Siebatcheu had a 10th-minute penalty saved by Marvin Schwabe. The home side were reduced to 10 men nine minutes from time when Luca Kilian was shown a second yellow card. Unbeaten Union secured top spot after Freiberg were held to a goalless draw by Borussia Monchengladbach. But it is Urs Fischer's side who lead the table after six games, ahead of teams such as champions Bayern Munich, who are third and Borussia Dortmund in fifth place. Union are also competing in the Europa League after missing out on Champions League qualification by a single point last season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B529/production/_126677364_union-main.jpgUnion Berlin finished fifth in the Bundesliga last season

Union are also competing in the Europa League after missing out on Champions League qualification by a single point last season. Union Berlin finished fifth in the Bundesliga last season With no premiersh*t football to contend with, the local was happy to stick on the Koln / Union game. Checked with a few people that it was OK to turn off the BBC funeral coverage (that no-one was watching), not a problem. Sadly missed the goal and the penalty whilst they sorted out the satellite box. Union totally dominant. They have come out of their shell over the last season or so and are taking control of games and playing on the front foot. The first couple of seasons in the Bundesliga they were soaking up pressure and hitting teams on the break. Not any more. They are still very hard working and difficult to break down, but have added an attacking flair. Their recruitment has been spot on. It's hard to think of what an 'equivalent' team in England might be. I'd plump for Millwall. But without all the unpleasantness, and still playing at the Old Den. Union re-built their ground (22,000 capacity with 19,000 terracing) with their bare hands and volunteer support back in 2008. In a similar way Millwall supporters helped demolish the Old Den after their final game of the 1992-3 season (Millwall 0 Bristol Rovers 3).

Champions League Results for 13.09.22.Bayern Munich 2 Barcelona 0 (Hernández 50, Sané 54) ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/114FE/production/_126701907_gettyimages-1423426339.jpgLucas Hernandez opened the scoring for Bayern Munich Missed chances by Robert Lewandowski on his return to Bayern Munich proved costly as his Barcelona side lost in Germany. Outplayed in the first half, Bayern blew their Spanish opponents away after the break with goals from Lucas Hernandez and Leroy Sane. Hernandez headed in at the near post after 50 minutes, before Sane clipped home to seal the win shortly after. Lewandowski spurned a number of clear openings in an entertaining match. The victory puts Bayern Munich in control of Group C with six points from two games. Marseille 0 Eintracht Frankfurt 1 (Lindsrtom 43) Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2 Atlético Madrid 0 (Andrich (84',Diaby 87')

Today's Games in the German Bundesliga (18.09.22)1. FC Union Berlin 2 VfL Wolfsburg 0 VfL Bochum 1848 1 1. FC Köln 1 1899 Hoffenheim 0 SC Freiburg 0 Luckily I'm on good terms with the owner of the Theydon Oak. He didn't want to upset Wham fans, so decided not to split the signal on the big two TVs. Cue him digging out and wiring up an old smaller TV just for me (and a couple of others who I've brain-washed into watching Union) with our own table with a "reserved" sign on it. Bit dis-jointed in the 1st half. Union should have gone 1-0 in the first 30 seconds, but were lucky that Wolfsburg didn't take the lead at the end of the 1st half. Second half - more like it. A glanced header from Jordan (or Siebatcheu if you prefer) on 54 put Union 1-0 up and celebrations from our table as the Wham fans turned round a bit mystified. Becker added a second on 77 and it made for a comfortable viewing and another victory at the fortress that is Stadion An der Alte Forsterei. Union are the only unbeaten team in the Bundesliga. Union are top of the Bundesliga. 2 points clear of Dortmund in 2nd and a whopping 5 points clear of Bayern in 5th. Top scorer in the Bundesliga is Becker - Union Berlin. Und Niemals Vergessen Eisern Union.
