He would have played with Kevin Keegan for the 3 seasons he was there, 1 title & 1 runners up also managed Hamburg, Bayern, Wolfsburg, Stuttgart, Eintracht, Nurnberg & Schalke too. Since being sacked by Fulham in 2014, he's hardly set the world alight. Just one short stint at Shandong Luneng before becoming Hertha's third managerial appointment of the season. Not looking good for Hertha. Guten nacht, Die Alte Dame. Und es ist gute Nacht von mir und es ist gute Nacht von ihm.

Eintracht arrive shortly back in Frankfurt and they'll head to the traditional venue for events like this, the Römer in central Frankfurt. There may be one or two fans knocking around :-) If you want to watch you'll find a live stream here which starts at 4.30pm UK time. This whole city is rocking !

The scenes tonight in Frankfurt are incredible. First off, the Germans don't do a Bus tour. They get a fleet of Mercedes open top sports cars with four players/officials sat in each. The drive from the airport to the centre of Frankfurt, where they are heading, is normally a 20 minute drive. It has taken them just over 3.5 hours and they STILL haven't reached their destination. The crowds are HUGE. You are talking a couple of hundred thousand at least lining the route. I'd be there but unfortunately I have to cover for a sick workmate and I'm working 2pm till 10pm today.
This crowd is bigger than when the German national team came home with the World Cup ! Same route, same venue.

Hertha Berlin 0 SV Hamburg 1. Bit of a nervy affair. Hertha had a goal chalked off for off-side by VAR in the first half. Hamburg took the lead from a cross that managed to find its way into the top right hand corner. Hertha didn't offer much to get back into the game. The return leg is on Monday. And for real anoraks - the Bundesliga 2 play off first leg is tonight. Kaiserslauten (Bundesliga winners as recently as vs 1997-98) vs Dynamo Dresden. On Skybet.

Kaiserslautern 0 Dynamo Dresden 0. Looked a cracking atmosphere. Kaiserslautern well on top in the first half. Kind of ran out of ideas in the second half and it really was aa 0-0 bore draw. Dresden looked very happy with the result and must fancy their chances at home.

Watched the HB v Hamburger game via YouTube, massive traveling support despite the travel problems+ last train to Clarksville left 9 minute before the end of the game!! Atmosphere seemed excellent, and the constant noise wow!! Despite this theHB side never really got going and I thought were fortunate to only have lost by the single goal, Hamburg were the better team on the night and would expect them to seal off this tie by at least a 3-0 win

Two awful bits of defending gave Hertha a comfortable win. Hamburg were toothless, can't remember them threatening the Hertha goal at all. They just froze on the big occasion. So Hamburg will be spending their 5th season down in Bundesliga 2. And Union will be happy with the 6 points Hertha will donate to them next year. Dynamo Dresden vs Kaiserslauten in the Bundesliga 2 play off 2nd leg tonight.

I've been reading up a bit about East German football. Pretty much all their previously high profile Clubs attract an element of unpleasant right wing support. Hansa Rostock, Energie Cottbus, Dynamo Dresden and Dynamo Berlin spring to mind. Dynamo Berlin is a strange one. Pretty sure all the other Berlin Clubs are left-leaning / anti-fascist - leaving Dynamo Berlin to attract all the nutters. Anyway - I didn't watch the Kaiserslautern game last night, but presume a collective sigh of relief from the other Bundesliga 2 Clubs.

Going back to the HB game what struck me was the intensity of colour the fans and respective teams wear like a wall of yellow / red/ blue across the stadium,.. and the outstanding thing was fans.... on the terrace....mid game drinking 🍺🍺🍺

It is like the best bits of football in this country (pre-Sky). But with a beer. Hopefully I'll get out there again next season. It's much cheaper to fly to Berlin than getting a train from Paddington to Bristol...

They even have people walking round with a canister of beer on their backs so you can get a beer without leaving your seat.

The strange case of SC Tasmania 1900 Berlin. The worst team ever to compete in the Bundesliga (1965-1966). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SC_Tasmania_1900_BerlinPromoted because the Bundesliga had relegated Hertha, and wanted a presence from Berlin in the top flight. By a twist of fate the team finishing third in the Regionalliga Berlin was chosen to be promoted. Surely the ficklest fans in the history of the game. 81,500 and 70,000 for the first two home games. Just 827 hardy souls turned up in January 1966 for a fixture against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Finished bottom and relegated with lots of records. Played 34 Won 2 Drawn 4 Lost 28. Goals for 15, Goals against 108, Goal difference: -93. The Club was dissolved in 1973. A new Club was established - SV Tasmania 73 Neukölln, now called SV Tasmania Berlin. They have just been promoted to the 4th tier of German football, the Regionalliga Nordost.

Union, Hertha, FC Viktoria 1889 Berlin, BFC Dynamo, Tennis Borussia Berlin and SV Tasmania Berlin. All have a fascinating history. I hope to get out to Berlin next season and tick off a few new grounds. Tennis Borussia Berlin were originally called "Berliner Tennis und Ping-Pong Gesellschaft Borussia". Marvellous name. In other news BFC Dynamo are in a promotion play-off today with VfB Oldenburg to see who gets promotion to Bundesliga 3. (Oldenburg 2-0 after the1st leg in Berlin). I'll get me coat. Ich hole meinen Mantel.
