SATURDAY 20th JANUARY 2024 - GERMAN BUNDESLIGA
1. FC Köln 0 Borussia Dortmund 4

Borussia Dortmund comfortably beat Cologne after a stoppage in their Bundesliga match when fans threw chocolate coins on to the pitch in protest against an investment proposal by the German Football Association. Supporters from both clubs threw the gold coins during the 12th minute to symbolise their role as the '12th man'. It led to an eight-minute break in play while players from both teams helped stewards remove the confectionary. Dortmund went on to win 4-0 in Cologne. In December, a majority vote by German clubs approved a proposal to sell some Bundesliga TV rights in exchange for investment capital. Supporters threw tennis balls on to the pitch during Bochum's 3-0 win over Union Berlin last month and there was a 12-minute stoppage during Heidenheim's 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg on Saturday as part of league-wide protests. Bochum's 1-0 home win against VfB Stuttgart was also delayed by 40 minutes after fans of the visiting side unfurled flags which blocked fire exits. Donyell Malen gave Dortmund the lead in the 12th minute on Saturday before the protests began and hostile chants about the German FA followed throughout the match. Malen doubled his tally in the second half, adding to Niclas Fullkrug's penalty and a stoppage-time goal from Youssoufa Moukoko.

Bit of a shock losing Becker to Real Sociedad last week (but he was out of contract at the end of the season). 3mil Euros doesn't sound like a great deal for Union.

Interesting (well to me)... List of German Clubs by number of members (2022-23) below. Helps explain Bayern dominance. www.statista.com/statistics/595935/german-bundesliga-clubs-member-numbers/Top 12 Bayern 293k Schalke 160k Dortmund 157k Koln 123k Frankfurt 110k Monchengladbach 94k Stuttgart 75k Freiburg 46k Union 40.5k Bremen 40.4k Hertha 40.1K Leverkeusen 27.5k Bundesliga 2: Hamburg 88k, Nurnberg 22.4k can't find Kaiserslautern numbers but must be big as well.

To be honest, even with Rovers under a new manager and new ownership, I'm finding it really hard to relate to the Club at the moment. I remember in 1993 queuing in the freezing cold for Rovers/Liverpool replay tickets at 11pm on a Saturday night - with the Twerton ticket office not due to open until 9am the next morning. Luckily the queue was big enough by midnight and Rovers sold the remaining tickets there and then. I wouldn't have missed that game under any circumstances. Right now - I'm just not bothered. That was then, and this is now. Regards, eisernepping.

WEDNESDAY 24th JANUARY 2024 - GERMAN BUNDESLIGA
Bayern Munich 0 FC Union Berlin 0 - Half-time

THE TEAMS Bayern starting XI: Neuer, Upamecano, De Ligt, Kimmich, Goretzka, Kane, Sane, Coman, Guerreiro, Laimer, Musiala. Subs: Ulreich, Choupo-Moting, Dier, Davies, Müller, Zvonarek, Tel, Kratzig, Pavlovic Union Berlin starting XI: Ronnow, Trimmel, Knoche, Vogt, Leite, Gosens, Tousart, Kral, Haberer, Volland, Hollerbach. Subs: Jaeckel, Doekhi, Aaronson, Kaufmann, Bedia, Busk, Schafer, Behrens, Roussillon. 25 mins - SUBSTITUTION - Union forced into change - What a shame for Kevin Volland. The striker has to come off after that clash of head's with Dayot Upamecano. He is replaced by Kevin Behrens.

41 mins - Bayern Munich 0-0 Union Berlin - I'll be honest with you here... It's not the best half of football I've ever watched.
HALF-TIME - Bayern Munich 0-0 Union Berlin
It's been a pretty dull half of football and Thomas Tuchel will have to get his side going if they are to close that seven point gap Bayer Leverkusen hold over them.
Half-Time Stats: Bayern Munich 0-0 Union Berlin - Possession: 74% - 26% - Shots: 14-2 - On Target: 6-0 - Corners: 7-0

Union were outplayed. They should have had a penalty (no, seriously - I watch games pretty objectively), but not to be. Would have been a pretty undeserved if they had escaped with a 1-1 draw. Although the Union manager was sent off for grabbing Sane round the throat (twice) - the players didn't really show the same amount of passion. I'm used to more fire, never shirking a 50/50 ball, getting stuck right into the opposition faces. Would probably have taken a 1-0 defeat ahead of the game. Surely their home record will be enough to keep them up. It won't be European football in 2024-25...

WEDNESDAY 24th JANUARY 2024 - GERMAN BUNDESLIGA - RESULT
Bayern Munich 1 (Guerreiro 46) FC Union Berlin 0
GOAL - Bayern 1-0 Union - Raphael Guerreiro (46 mins)
GOAL - Bayern 2-0 Union - Harry Kane (55 mins) DISALLOWED GOAL - Bayern Munich 1-0 Union Berlin Leroy Sane was offside in the build-up.
75 mins - RED CARD - Union boss sent off - What has happened here then? Leroy Sane tries to slap the ball out of Nenad Bjelica's hand and the Union boss didn't take too kindly to it and shoved Sane in the face twice. A clear red card and a poor moment for the manager. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/24/bc3ac334-1a7b-4646-9458-f9e6b16cb0ec.jpgFT: Bayern Munich 1-0 Union Berlin - It's all over at the Allianz Arena in what became an ill-tempered affair. Bayern close Bayer Leverkusen's lead to four points thanks to Raphael Guerreiro's second half goal.

Kind of lost the will to support and invest emotionally with England some time ago. Might well have been the Lampard "goal that wasn't" before Germany ripped England to shreds in 2010 that was the final straw. Germany will put on a good show. I would imagine only plastic Leipzig will be the only stadium in the 'old East' that will host games. No interest in an England game. Maybe flying out for one of the minnows games will be more of a laugh. Depends on cheap flights from Stansted. Hopefully get another trip out there soon based on very cheap flights - Koln, Nurnberg, Bremen, Memmingham all typically less than £40 return. Hamburg and Berlin more like £60 return.

Union Berlin 1 Darmstadt 0. First 12 minutes were played out in silence - I presume this is still about the Bundesliga selling off a minority shareholding to an outside investor. First half very edgy, not a lot of quality on show. Second half Union upped the tempo. Scored on a break away with Hollenbach converting. Behrens had a nightmare. Falling over, looking for non-existent fouls and missing a couple of 1 on 1's. Union just about deserved the 3 points. A very nervous watch though. Looks like Sky are putting more and more German games on their Sky Football YouTube channel. Excellent. UNVEU.

A hard earned point would be a pleasing result...

A hard earned point would be a pleasing result... Not to be. Union conceded from free kicks early in both halves. First half they were miles off the pace. The new signing up front Vertessen from PSV had a bit of a shocker. Midfield couldn't get hold of the ball at all. Union reserve keeper Schwolow kept them in the game with some good saves. Always felt like Plastic could go up a gear when they wanted. The substitutions made Union look better in the second half and they looked OK until Captain Trimmel was very harshly sent off (99/100 it was a yellow, honestly mein herr). Xavi for Plastic had a terrific game. Union are struggling away from home. Away to Bayern, Dortmund, Plastic & Leverkeusen - no chance. It will be the home form that keeps Union up. Hopefully. Eisern Union.
