Did I say that? I don't think I did. I've gone to a lot of preseason matches since DC took over. Rarely - no,never, anything to write home about. Didn't seem to affect the rest of the season though. Why would players risk injuries & strains so early on?

Friendlies are just that. If we were to turn Salisbury over 6-0 bearing in mind we fielded half the recognised first XI, triallists and new players trying to establish themselves, then DC actually is a genius and we would be in the Prem in two seasons. Tactics are being tried out, new players are bedding in, triallists are being assessed, match fitness is being built and even off-field stuff is practised; it was bound to be disjointed in places. There were good performances and periods of play, and Salisbury is not a Mickey Mouse outfit; the overall game is meaningless, it's the processes going on in it that matter.

It's a run out, nothing more or less.
If you need that drumming into you, I'd recommend leaving football alone from now until forever.

Just arrived a few hours ago. First impressions are very good. Travelled from airport to hotel with a family of Owls. They are playing 3 local sides this week. Our Driver said that the next resort- Vilamora- is a bit fat wallet. Figo has a bar there regularly frequented by Rooney, Ferdinand etc., Not seen any Gas Flags yet but maybe because I'm in Old Town. Driver confirmed he delivered Gas on the weekend. Most important info is the bar near my hotel is €2.20 for a large beer which is around £1.90. However I'm in the Victoria bar and Strongbow is €3.50 a pint - serves me right I know! Further reports will follow tomorrow and yes it's flippin ot even approaching midnight. UTG

Those Hull medics are damn clever, mid-July in Portugal and it's very hot; even at 6.30 last night it was uncomfortable (for me who is rather unfit) - a dry heat, but playable, Sincs will probably run all 90 mins and then some. The Portuguese Sagres beer is better than the other one, Superbock.
(Hope you don't mind the odd aside Scotsgas.)

Thanks Igitur - will sample a Sagres or 3 en route to the game. Almost made schoolboy error thinking there's an hour time difference - which there isn't - and thought it was 7.30 kick off so now I'll be in good time. General travel tip - took 200 euros at ATM and was offered a conversion rate at £194 which I declined. My bank has charged me £175 so never take the conversion rate offered at ATMs abroad.

Gaffney scored (49 mins) for Rovers, but was denied a second by an offside flag.
1:0 to Rovers.

Late goals from Hernandez (66) and Bowen (85) gave Hull a 2-1 win.

Selected lines from Hull's match report:
[Hull manager] Leonid Slutsky named the same starting eleven as for the previous friendly against Oxford United, although Adama Diomande missed out on a place on the bench with a stiff back.
Rovers threatened early with Allan McGregor getting down smartly to save Billy Bodin's low drive while at the other end Sam Clucas saw a shot blocked.
Evandro pulled up and had to be replaced by James Weir just 12 minutes in and that was just about it in terms of noteworthy incidents in the tamest of tame first halves, McGregor again saving from Bodin in the closing moments.
Bristol Rovers took the lead in the 51st minute, Rory Gaffney taking advantage of a mistake in the Tigers' back line before rounding McGregor and slotting the ball into the net.
Gaffney had an effort ruled out for offside soon after, with Batty giving Rovers' goalkeeper Sam Slocombe his first real test of the evening with a daisy-cutter from 25 yards.
The Tigers levelled in the 67th minute when Henriksen slipped a pass through for Hernandez who beat Slocombe at his near post with a left-footed strike.
Hernandez almost doubled his tally a minute later, but this time Slocombe had his near post covered to push the ball away for a corner which Michael Dawson headed over the bar, while Bowen poked wide at the far post when the Tigers next won a corner.
Bowen then hit the post before netting a winner three minutes from time with a curling left-footed effort from the edge of the box.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday when they face Benfica at Estadio Algarve.

It's funny how football is all in the eye of the beholder; here are some phrases about the first half from the Rovers' match report, which was "the tamest of tame first halves" according to Hull's reporter. Billy Bodin unleashed a ferocious left foot shot...Rovers soon broke again and Harrison saw his shot deflected behind...Liam Sercombe was next to try his luck...Ollie Clarke ballooned a long range effort high over the bar...Bodin was causing problems for the opposition and on 19 minutes he threaded a delightful through ball to Harrison...Marc Bola saw his rising shot from the edge of the area deflected behind for a corner...a snap shot from Bodin almost led to the evening’s first goal. However McGregor was equal to the task and did well to save, diving low to his left to touch the ball away from danger. And then in the second half, we scored and then conceded two .

Great evening, over twice as many gas as Hull. Three bars plus food in ground. Some cloud and a little breeze made it very comfortable. Very good start by Rovers and we surely won the first half, but that's not what it's about, it's performance, fitness etc. Billy was brilliant, Leads was good, Bola fitted in well, Quite why people fly all this way to slag off Ellis ignoring the other 10 I'll never know, if he could do what they were asking he would be worth £100M and playing for Real Madrid. The side looked weaker as subs were made, but DC has a good squad, and one or two fair triallists, before the start of the season.

UTG Vilamoura's lush, with a big casino and some great places to eat and drink overlooking the marina etc. Tis expensive though. Try a boat trip from there.

We played Swindle yesterday in a 3x30mins game which ended 0-0; it must have given DC more chance to try things and look at players as well as boosting fitness. Heading for Faro soon, really enjoyed the game and the Sagres lager, but, to me, Albufeira was too touristy, the locals though have been really friendly.
