I'm sure alot will remember Saltergate?
I went twice.
Once on a Saturday in 80s as a teenager, mate drove, old bill said a mob were looking for Bristol outside....then promptly buggered off to leave us!
Second was 98/99 on a night match which I drove from Manchester.....great match (NOT!) 0-0 boring.
Went to their newer ground last time we played them. Felt cr@p cos had flu, tons of old bill at railway station, no hint of trouble, Eliot Richards hits the post from a rasper, then.......a rout and hey presto, Chesterfield go on to get promotion that season with Bradford.
I still like Jay O'Shea..
So......never seen us win there, not a sniff of a victory. Perhaps we are in the best position to beat them for years.
Hope we re-establish our confidence. Safe journey, Gas and lets bring back 3points!

Went to Saltergate in April 1973, won 1 - 0, Warboys scored? Chased out of their end and watched game from stands. Now 43 years later going back for first time this weekend and to new ground. Safe journey to all.

For my own sanity, can someone confirm it was Warboys who scored in April 1973. Is there anything left of Saltergate or is it a supermarket etc?

I love old school grounds so gutted I never made it to Saltergate. I've been to whatever hideous name the new one is called once in the season Ward kept us up. We lost 2-0 I think and it just seemed one game too far after a good run. I tried blagging getting in for an u18 as they didn't do student prices and got refused, yet only got served a pint in the concourse after showing ID.
It's your generic lego style new build, but unlike most there are plenty of decent pubs around and the station is walkable (25 mins) from memory.

Went in March 1974, our promotion season. Chesterfield were making a bid for the third promotion place and it ended 0-0. Pretty awful match, can't remember much about the match. All I can remember is big Jim Eadie stopping and speaking to me as he went into the ground. Great guy obviously!

For one game I got sent to Manchester to help a boss do a presentation, and on the way back I swung round to Chesterfield for a mid week fixture, which we won, and all on a mileage claim. The old stand was dreadful with a very unhygienic Gents.

I went to Saltergate a few times, the first for a 3-0 win, which must have been 20 odd years ago. Lovely old ground, with some decent pubs nearby, although the police came into one and started asking everyone where they were from, if they answered Bristol, they were told they had to leave. I watched stunned as fellow Rovers fans (not wearing colours) were daft enough to say they were from Bristol! Me and my mate just said we were from Chesterfield, and had the pub pretty much to ourselves I have been to the new ground, the first time we played there, again there was a couple of decent pubs, which were packed with Rovers, and a good day out was only spoiled by a 2-1 defeat.

I've been to old and new grounds a few times; it's a comfortable hour's drive over the High Peak from Macclesfield for me. Two defeats out of two, so far, at the new ground, in 2013 and 2014, when the Spireites were on the up. Apart from the games themselves, my only memory is of some penguins. See this report in "The Star": "Paul Cook was looking to conjure up some magic against an in-form Bristol Rovers side. John Ward has led Rovers to eight wins and three draws in his 14 games at the helm, a run that saw them one place and two points behind Spireites. The game started in very cold temperatures, a couple of dozen Rovers fans dressed as penguins certainly didn’t look out of place".Link to Report of Chesterfield v Rovers 2013

Can you spot the inappropriately dressed fans? And some penguins?

Annoyed I never managed to make it to Saltergate.
Went to their new ground during our relegation to the Conference season when they were one of the better teams in the league and outplayed us. Foul conditions all day but my main memory was Tom Parkes complete inability to adjust and deal with the swirling wind - he was flailing around like a distressed whale, it was pitiful to watch. If ever a day required your big, ugly, physical centre back to stand up and be counted it was that one and instead he looked like a man who was one step away from launching a distress beacon. I remember thinking we were lucky not to have been beaten by more.
The ground itself is a modern cookie cutter (ie. they all look the same) stuck in a predictable retail park. Very similar to Shrewsbury. It was perfectly adequate but lacking any interesting feature. I liked the town though - looking forward to going back there tomorrow and hopefully a different result.
