Smith was one of the only (if not the only) player that could hold his head up high that season. Why should he have stayed to get us out of the mess and why did he deserve to? You could equally argue that other players that stayed were too good for the 5th tier, but they stayed, and I'm glad they did. I can't help it, I just value loyalty, obviously others don't, that's fair enough.

However i think most fans recognised Smith was perhaps the only player thst didnt deserve to go down and thus didnt deserve to be lumbered with us in the unknown

Both points are valid. He did leave us in our hour of need, to better himself and his career. He was a shining light that year. But he did conduct his departure with dignity, and even publicly congratulated us when we went straight back up. I think it's harsh to call him a rat. I will applaud him when I see him next. I also think it's poignant we have actually superceded Smithy. At one time we thought him too good for us, now it is technically the other way around according to league position! If you call smith a rat, then I guess so is Lambert? They both left during relegation seasons to better themselves.. !! Smith's loyalty is to Smith, fair enough, let him get on with it. Unlike Lambert; 1. He left at the end of the season when it was already known we were in a world of trouble the following year. 2. He hasn't gone on to play in the PL and technically isn't fit to lace Lambert's boots. Haha! Because smithy never played in prem? What's that gotta do with his leaving? As if that makes a difference. You could apply all those traits to Lambo except the timing of departure. Like I said both made a professional judgement and conducted themselves in the same way. It would be a more fitting justice to get to a place where Smithy services are not up to our standards because we've gone way above his ability..

If you are part of a team at work that mess a project up you stick around and sort it out. No ifs or buts. Should the employer decide they no longer require your services that's between them and their conscience, but you don't run away.

How do you k.ow the ones that stayed, stsyed through loyalty and not because they were getting paid better than they would elsewhere. Smith did what was best for him. I would have loved him to have stayed, but i dont blame him for leaving and more importantly he earned his move because of his performances

Either way, a draw today against his side is a moral victory for us.

Today I shall be applauding Michael Smith. Today I shall be totally ignoring Bamber Gasgroin.

The Answer is NATHAN POND of FLEETWOOD TOWN The Club’s longest serving player, has won six promotions in ten seasons during his 12 year Highbury career, played in his seventh different division for the Club which is a Guinness World Record That's a much more interesting answer than i had been fearing - quite a feat. Ta for highlighting it

He left the season when we reached 3rd place at the end of Sep when we beat his new team Southampton at St Mary's with that late wonder goal from Andy Williams.

He was alright for us in a shockingly dire team. Player of the year sure, but was that very hard that season?! Seems like a genuine good lad, but for me not exactly hero status. No different to any other Ex player that has returned to the mem.
No booing, no OTT applause, just hope he leaves the hallowed turf with feck all at 5pm!

If Micheal Smith dealt with his departure with dignity, why did he hand in a transfer request? There was no need to do that at all. The club didn't stand in anyones way who wanted to leave. I for one won't forget his transfer request and whilst I won't boo, I most defintely will not clap My understanding is that if a club sells a player without that player handing in a transfer request then they are liable to pay that player all future bonuses under his contract. If the player hands in a transfer request and is then sold then the player is not due those future bonuses under his contract. What a **** that Michael Smith is trying to save the club a few pounds.

I think thats missing the point. MS didnt put in a transfer request to save the club money, he did it for his own benefit and to aid getting away. I dont blame him at all for wanting out but imo he did not have to go about it the way he did. He would have still got his move irrespective of puting in writing that he did not want to play again for BRFC Very poor on the part of him and his agent in my view

No just left via the normal route as all players could have done after relegation

Well, if he left to improve his game it didn't work.
Nothing special, got turned inside out more than once and looked bang average to me.

I never said anything about costing the club more money...that wasn't the original point I was making. Really was no need to question my sanity btw. Its actually fine to disagree. Anyway I'm bored of this now so feel free to insult me further as I'll let it slide without insulting you back.
