So Cheltenham have a "top ten" budget for the conference according to their chairman but still beat us. This puts us in good stead for a top seven finish this year? Discuss.

Cheltenham's budget is absolutely irrelevant in terms of our ability to compete in League Two.

Not saying splashing cash always means great players but can't help thinking darrell has a shoestring budget this season.

We shall qualify for the Europa League through the League Cup and have bunting everywhere. Lovely scenes will occur and everyone will stop mentioning a poxy friendly against Cheltenham in which the most important outcome was no more injuries. Best wishes. Xx

I don't think it was, was it? Why get so defensive? Considering the club we should be and budget we should have based on gates etc why do you still defend the fact we haven't spent any real money? laugh at me all you like but this team won't cut it in League Two.

I think the Cheltenham performance proved beyond doubt that the players are being paid in gift vouchers (redeemable at UWE Stadium retail outlets) and DC has run out of them so cannot strengthen the squad. Morale is rock bottom and we are heading back to the conference. I reserve the right to edit this post a bit if we play well in our next friendly fixture.

People forget that L2 is almost as crap as the conference. Not many teams go straight back up when relegated and not many go straight back down when promoted. We start tthis season with basically the same squad that outperformed the rest of the conference for the final two thirds of last season. We might not finish in the top 3 but we can challenge for the play offs. Don't panic.

For the first time in many years our club are working to a sensible budget and DC works within that budget. long may it continue

'Out performed the rest of the conference'...wow that sets the bar high doesn't it ?..trouble is that its not true Woking and Dover away being 2 examples. I read DC comments after Wembley and he said that he wanted to bring in 4 or 5 quality players for this season...they haven't been brought in,I wonder why ?. Players like Gosling,Ollie Clark and Blissett were only just good enough for the Conference, they wont be much help now..and yet I would be pleased to be wrong maybe Blissett will bang in 25 goals,we can hope but I cant see it happening. I am not too worried about the friendly results, but we should have strengthened the squad in fact with the ones who have left the squad might even be weaker ?. Nobody seems to be mentioning a worrying season where Rovers are in the bottom 6 all season, maybe because nobody wants to think about that happening, mid table would be a good position for this squad IMO,but at sometime it needs to be strengthened and rebuilt. People on here seem to think that Harrison,Parkes,Brown are valuable assets that Rovers do well to keep, but if for instance Harrison is so good why haven't a bigger club made an offer for him ? surely there must be scouts at the games ?.

As you mentioned, a pre-season friendly isn't really a gauge.
And if we turn our attention to competitive matches, then cup giant-killings happen regularly - and not just with a one division gap.

we have strengthen the squad Lines, Montano, Clarke these have been added and with a fit again Easter we are better prepared than 12 months ago I would imagine 12 months ago Cheltenham were looking forward to the season we are were not... now 12 months on roles have been reversed ..progress for one and utter dread for the other ..I am in camp one and looking forward to the season. The Arsenal U21 game taught me we are a million miles from matching such a high ranking Club.

For the first time in many years our club are working to a sensible budget and DC works within that budget. long may it continue For the first time in long while I find myself agreeing (mostly) with Henbury. I don't think anyone really knows our budget - but it must be tight. We are £5-6mil in debt (and £2mil of that to wonga that needs repaying at the end of the year). We are still locked in a protracted expensive legal dispute with a Corporate giant. I'm pleasantly surprised we were able to sign Lines and retain the rest of the squad from the previous season. We can't spend money we don't have. And we have no chance of securing outside investment whilst Mr Higgs remains on his "we wuz robbed" pointless crusade in the Courts. Anyone know what Tony the Tills attendance break-even figure is this year? If we finish mid-table and are not in any more in debt at the end of the season - I'll take that.

I think we'll do okay.
it's the getting excited about the challenge of being in the 4th division that I struggle with.
