Neither Trollope or Ward got us relegated. The board didn't give them the opportunity to.

Feb 5, 2015 17:53:19 GMT buckrippers said: Oh come on Crazy Train! Poor ickle wickle inexperienced Darrell. Do you think he said: "OK Mr Higgs I'll give it my best shot but don't expect miracles". Or did he say: "I'm the man for the job... I'll sort your scoring problems... I'll put right all the wrongs that dumbass John Ward created... I've got great contacts and will sign top players at bargain basement prices... I'm a top tactician... I'll get you back in the league." He may yet get us out of the league and if so he deserves all the plaudits he gets. But he can't hide behind the "inexperienced" excuse and, personally, I don't think he would want to. Let's face it... Paul Trollope and Ollie both had less managerial experience when they took over. i certainly don't always share Nick's point of view, or the way he expresses it, but I think he's got a really good point here. DC was a professional football player for what...15 years? He's probably seen it all in terms of pressure, abuse, confidence, psychology, etc. He's been a manager of various sorts (player-mgr, asst mgr, full mgr) for what... 4 1/2 years. I imagine he's quite able to handle himself. I imagine he did say to the Board "I can do this job. I'll help sort you out". Do people think he would have got the job if he said 'oh, no, I'm not ready' or 'oh, can't you persuade JW to stay longer'? And be honest, who of us would want a manager who said that! BTW - Gerry Francis only had 1 nightmare season with Exeter before managing us!

I've never heard anyone who wouldn't say Dennis Rofe / Big Mal. anyone want to remember / guess how many games John Ward actually had at the end of the season? [N.B. my point is not to blame JW for 1993/4]

How about outthinking a few managers who probably get to train and drill their part-time players a couple of nights a week if they're lucky? I think he has done OK but failing to win at Dartford, Woking, Alfreton, Braintree, Altrincham, Wrexham, Chester, Aldershot and Welling (may have missed some) isn't great when he still has players to call on like Mildenhall, Brown, Parkes, Lockyer, Monkhouse and Mansell, who are all Football League standard. I know people will say these teams raise their game when they face Rovers but did anyone really think that Dartford excelled themselves, or Woking come to that? I get the fact he has had to rebuild the spirit, and he's done a decent job with that, absolutely. But sometimes his team selection and tactics are open to question and he's a bit of a tinkerman, as Daniel Leadbitter confirmed the other day. I certainly don't agree with him saying "we deserved to win the game" as he did after Dartford. People who didn't go to that game might think we dominated the game. We didn't by any means. I don't think we did anywhere near enough to take the three points. Clarke is here to stay pal, stop being so bitter about Clarke and who knows, you might even start enjoying the games we do win and being second a bit more!? Bristol Rovers draw at Dartford, Chelsea lost at home to Bradford. No comparison Clarke is a disgrace I think you totally miss the point. Nick is often accused of being a bit flippant, but when he writes something very sensible and analytical, then someone comes back with a 1 line comment that is just as much of a stuck record as the accusation that Nick is a stuck record. When you look at the list above it is pretty interesting that we couldn;t beat any of those (and lost to 2 of them). I really like DC and the change in attitude he is affecting, but away draws / loses are a problem. From what I have seen from my own eyes at away matches, and what I have read /heard about the ones I didn't go to, we have not excelled ourselves or bossed games. Our away goal difference of +1 certainly shows that! Barnet's was +17 until recent losses reduced it to a mere +12.

i wasnt at the game but maybe dartford allowed rovers space and time in our half? i noticed in the welling home game that happened ie welling sat back allowed us possession in our half and frustrated us for a time. i wasnt at the game so perhaps somebody could tell me if that was the case? There were a couple of times in the second half they had us penned in by the corner flag,we passed our way out just, usually we would have got rid of the ball down the line. I thought at the time looking at that pitch it was a risky thing to do. Trying to run with the ball through the middle of the pitch was also very difficult, also to try and pass along the ground through the middle. I felt at the time we could have bypassed the middle a bit more and hit it long to Blissett or in the channels. Much prefer a passing game but on that pitch, and we do go long ball quite often in most games,we kept it on the deck to much, never thought I would say that Just my opinion of course thanks for that,so basically were hoofing on a good pitch but tippy tapping on a bad one

Having read all this thread two things come to mind (i) I'd like to bang some of your heads together for the way you 'speak' to one another on the forum (ii) Perhaps the way to avoid the disagreement we have between people's views is that we should create threads headed ' If you have only watched 5-10 games so far this season comment on the team and managers performance here' 'If you have only watched 10-20 games this season comment here etc' or 'If you have watched every game home and away this season comment here etc' and finally 'If you have watched no games this season comment here etc'. This seems a fair way of ensuring those who have watched the same number of games get to discuss what they have watched without anyone questioning how many games they've watched to make their informed opinion Ps....just thought maybe we'll have to create threads for those to make their comments if they've just listened to games on the radio, those who've watched highlights on you tube and one for those who've listened to comments down the pub ! UTG !!

Now if the blog was soley about that. I would take less issue. My gripe was lumping in DC with other managers we have had and it portraying him as just another soundbite manager acheiving little when he is actually doimg someting positive

My gripe was lumping in DC with other managers we have had and it portraying him as just another soundbite manager acheiving little when he is actually doimg someting positive It's actually a shame that some people missed the point. I'm not lumping him in with the McGee's and Buckles in any way. I'm pointing out that he has a lot of love from fans in the same way as Gould, Francis and Holloway did, and that they are supporting him to the hilt, yet rather than come out and say exactly what the fans are feeling sometimes I wish he would hold his hands up and admit the team's failure to win games is his responsibility as much as, say, Tom Parkes and Steve Mildenhall. God knows, he'll take all the praise if we go up. We should have won at Dartford despite the mistakes because we are a far better team with better resources. You are not always going to win those games, I agree, but it's failing to win many of them that could prove costly. It wasn't as if their keeper had a worldy and we were just unlucky, we should have been out of sight before that late free kick but barely threatened their goal. Still, I'm worn out with this subject now so it is better I refrain from further comment.

That's what happens when there's no football to watch, we all start wanting to give our opinions on what should have happened, haven't seen the Gas play since New Years day, it's doing me head in ! ....and I haven't even read his blog Then how are you in a position to comment??? You should have read this blog and at least 15 others before you are allowed to pass comment on the blog. Call yourself a blog reader? I've read every blog and all of the associated comments and I think only those who have done the same can have a valid opinion on a blog*. [* all of this is a lie. As regular readers know I gave up reading anything in the Post when the volume of pop-up ads started to crash my computer ]

Any more critics who haven't actually read it? Isn't this as bad as commenting on a football team when you haven't seen EVERY match they've played? A recap. Curlywurly, you said: " More self-aggrandising nonsense from you Nick.
There is no doubting DC's anger during his interview on Saturday and whilst most of this will be directed at the players, I don't doubt that he will look at his own performance and correct as necessary. Your article epitomises the denial that will keep us in this league and I thought we had got out of our system after Braintree and Altrincham. We are where we are and we need to treat games against Dartford as seriously as we would if we were playing Chelsea. I see that from the players and DC, but I don't see it from you."Pretty well informed from a "non reader". Someone, somewhere is telling porkies! I think it's unfair to imply that DC is 'dragging us' anywhere, or that it's his choice or responsibility we're in a greasy spoon.
I also take issue with the 'pull your socks up' line and the implication behind that.
Beyond that, it's all about opinions.
The guy's not a managerial genius who gets everything right first time, but I think he's better than any of the last few we've had in the annual turnover - not least because he accepts that he's learning rather than knows it all already and it's beneath his dignity to change anything.
I also think 2nd from a standing start, hindered by no budget declared until about July and the chairman only committing himself as far as 'he has a contract' is pretty good. Oldie alluded to a hint about other behind the scenes hindrances higher up.
I think he warrants encouragement and support.
