your clearly a blatant racist, youve proved it beyond all doubt in your posts on this thread Why is he a racist? I tend to agree with him! Abuse is abuse! Its ok to abuse somebody about their appearance, disability, weight, Nationality and a whole lot of other things but Racism, Sexism and Homophobia have been put on a pedastool and are deemed far more severe than any other form of abuse! Why is that? Cue the I must be a closet racist comments! in his post he wanders off into multi-cultural society clearly not working etc,,,your saying about some types of abuse being deemed more severe,,,,,football has moved on from the 70"s and racist chants or abuse is not acceptable,if you feel other types of abuse arnt taken as seriously thats your opinion but it dosnt mean we ignore racial abuse does it?

Nope. But in the 70's (and previously), racism was a massive problem at football that had to be dealt with. My point, is that a single fan in over 5,000 shouting something is blown out of proportion. I'm not saying its right, I'm not saying he shouldn't be chucked out, prosecuted or whatever. But for people saying one person shouting something means the keeper should walk off the pitch (other forum), when other vile abuse and language is used and accepted at football, is a bit crazy to me. If it was a large group/chanting/banners (like in Eastern European countries) I could understand.

I'm not saying we should ignore racist abuse no, I just don't understand why it seems that 3 specific types of abuse have been earmarked as being far more offensive than others! We used to sing a song about Craig Disley being "A Ginger ****,if you changed ginger to black then all of a sudden it is deemed highly offensive and illegal, what about the chant "You Fat b'stard" aimed at players who were on the larger side, again change the word and its deemed way more offensive. I remember players with long hair getting chants of "Gypo" shouted at them! What about "Sheep Shaggers" aimed at The Welsh? Or "Frogs" aimed at The French? You may not think that they are as offensive as a racist, sexist or homophobic remark, but some people might! If I called somebody a fat,big nosed, ginger, French ****, is there really a difference between that and making a remark about the colour of someone's skin? Its all abuse at the end of the day,and the powers that be are making a rod for their own back by saying that some types of abuse are legal and others are not! That's just my opinion! Does anybody even know what was said or shouted tonight?

Rovers fans racist? Doubt that very much after having most probably our best players in the clubs history ( on average) names like, Carl Saunders, Devon White, hayels Roberts, Ellington...... The list goes on!!! One think that stands out with our club is we have always produced top black players at this football club who have made us millions so sorry no I don't think we would go that low to abuse a black keeper who was obviously taken by some normal banter/stick u get at football grounds! He did look good in pink mind u! UTG!!!! I love your optimism. I can remember almost getting in a fight because a group of our fans thought it ok to shout lazy n***r at one of best ever player Super Jason Roberts at the mem. Bristol Rovers fans are generally not racist but this does not mean we have not got our fair share of idiots. The only way we will get rid of them is as a group not tolerate and make sure any body using racist abuse is known to the stewards. When they are caught give them life bans from our club. Oh and last night incident could have happened at any club in the country.

Racism, Sexism and Homophobia have been put on a pedastool and are deemed far more severe than any other form of abuse! Why is that? Slavery, the Holocaust, massive societal prejudice against homosexuals, and massive imbalances in opportunity against women, massive imbalance in crimes by men against women, are the big, obvious ones, but pretty much most of recent history in regard to homophobia, most of the history of the west for racism, and our entire civilisation for sexism, I would imagine.

The irony which has been highlighted is that we have black players in our team and have had for years. Find out what was said and ask them what they think about it and I am sure you will get an unequivocal response.
The fact that society treats racism, anti-semitism, homophobia, sexism, etc differently is no excuse for allowing abuse of that nature in the club. The fact that there is a percentage of people in society who are racist means we have have to expect a few to be present at matches ~ remember the National Front trying to get recruits at Eastville ~ doesn't mean that we should tolerate it.
And to intimate that their goalkeeper might be a bit delicate or sensitive or "has form"..... perhaps he has due cause to be sensitive!!

Let me firstly make the point that this is a bit of guesswork, as I didn't hear/see anything myself. Obviously the Dartford goalkeeper got pretty upset over an incident in the second half, resulting of a fan being ejected from the Blackthorn End. I'm guessing that nothing was thrown, as it would have been picked up, and shown to an official. So the only other conclusion that I can come up with is that Brown was the victim of racist abuse. Let me be the first to say that there is no place for racist abuse of any kind at BRFC, and anyone involved should be ashamed of themselves, if this is indeed the case. Can anyone clarify the incident? And what would be your guess as to why 3 Dartford fans were ejected from the away end?

So he's not prepared to keep his head down and just accept it. He's someone who'll stand up and be counted. Good for him, football and society needs people like him

Absolutely. A comment above asks why it's 'OK to abuse disabled people but not black/gay etc people' (I paraphrase obviously). Answer being, abuse of disabled people for being disabled isn't actually OK. I'm disabled, it's not OK to abuse me on that basis. Discrimination against people on the basis of any of these things isn't OK. This kind of 'whataboutery' is utter BS - racism still needs to be fought, even when society hasn't caught up with fighting other kinds of discrimination to the extent we have with racism. As for equating abusing ginger people with racism. I mean seriously, what the hell?

Yes, that 'whataboutery' is a classic reactionary debating tactic: 'if you care so much about this, then why aren't you doing anything about that similar thing.' As if we have to go to Rotherham and sort out the problems there, in order to earn the right to condemn some f**kwit in the Blackthorn.

Do we know what was actually said?? It's said it was two gasheads in the blackthorn end I stand in the corner of the open terrace and can confirm that it was two rovers fans ejected. One was clearly inebriated and looked to be struggling to keep upright and the other was a youth who was prostesting his innocence.

It's a bit like running on the pitch isn't it? There are different motives and varying levels of impact but any action that can be construed as racist is no longer tolerated. If someone called me a fat, jug eared CU Next Tuesday I would find it more offensive than if they were to call me a White one. But then again, my ancestors and I haven't suffered generation after generation of discrimination. I was once in a bar where a certain individual was causing problems by pestering women including some who were accompanied. I ended up stood next to him in the urinal and made a comment along the lines of "aren't black men supposed to have large gentleman's appendages?" He reported me to the doorman for a racist comment and I was asked to leave. I felt aggrieved at the time but I do believe that over reaction is better than no action when it comes to racism or indeed football hooliganism. I don't believe this is a major problem at Rovers and I doubt that it will result in a points deduction. As others have said, fans need to police this and stewards need to respond appropriately when incidents are brought to their attention.

Yeah, self policing is vital here.
I stand near a group of black Rovers fans and I know other black people who regularly go to games. If we tolerate language like that, it's not just the players it's directed at who will notice.

Official club statement.
During our game against Dartford last night, visiting goalkeeper Jason Brown was racially abused by one or more of our supporters who were stood on the terrace behind his goal.
Bristol Rovers are conducting a full investigation into the incident and co-operating fully with the police with the sole aim of identifying and apprehending the perpetrator(s) of the abuse.
Any supporters found to have been involved in the incident will be prosecuted and banned from this football club for life.
Our safety officer spoke to Jason Brown, and referee Adam Hopkins, at the end of the game.
Bristol Rovers operates a zero tolerance approach to abusive behaviour and, after all of our efforts to eliminate racial abuse from the Memorial Stadium, we are devastated at last night’s incident.
A small minority of so called supporters are bringing our club into disrepute and we run the risk of attracting a punishment from the Football Association should we continue to experience problems such as this.
Just one week after the Eastleigh Chairman praised the behaviour of our supporters, we are now investigating a very serious matter that happened in our own stadium and it is imperative that those responsible for last night’s incident are caught and punished.
Anyone who can assist with our enquiries should, in the first instance, contact John Harper on 07790 277985.
The club has written to Dartford FC, Jason Brown and the Football Association apologising for the incident but will not be making any further comment until investigations have been completed.

I know a couple of Gingers have contributed to the thread here and / or on the other forum but my partner's kid is mates with a ginger lad. He has been the victim of bullying for most of his school life. Ironically, the worst of it comes from Black or Asian kids. Until recently I wouldn't have taken it too seriously and dismissed him as overly sensitive. But the fact is, the constant banter and abuse has affected him very badly.

All those ‘complaining’ about Racism and other prejudices being put on a pedestal. If you feel that strongly about Gingerists or whatever, don’t try and dilute the indefensible, make a stand on the principle that it is not taken as seriously and raise awareness. Don’t try and brush any racism away with the “ what about…”
Racism is wrong, Rovers are treading a fine line lately with a number of incidents. No one can claim “what about..” should we get heavily punished. Perhaps we need points deductions or something, to make people take notice
