This from Cheshire nails it "There remain many things which I am very proud in our history, but I dismay at the determination to dumb the country down in the last few years, internationally, politically, economically and legally, to the levels of cheap labour countries and in human rights values to the level of Belarus and Russia." Those oft repeated dumbing down on here. Labelling people as "weasels", "scum" and indeed "traitors" It's shocking and nothing but shameful. How deeply ironic one of those perpetrators starts a thread about pride in our country, when he, they, are everything we should be, are, ashamed of. Ha! It was only a matter of time, you wanted to post that straight away, but decided to wait a bit and try to look reasonable.Ha! An antisemitic racist woker. Yuk! A kind of James O'Brien groupie.

Without ignoring or undermining your points on todays GB shame ( I agree it's not good), I just thought of one recent event, the London Olympics. I know it's pretty small fry, especially when compared to poverty, pollution etc, but I think most agreed the London Olympics were a success. The world I think agreed. The Olympics were the turning point for me. They were exceptionally well done, yet the organisational structure farmed out to the Tories favourite private companies, who nearly let the country down, had to be rescued by the army and a ton of volunteers. Since then all of the things that we were proud of have been hacked back to, so say, reduce debt but saw debt rise exponentially. Jewels in the crown like Windermere are being destroyed by the utility companies. Our armed forces, which have some units which are globally respected, are being hacked back, such that we struggle to get a new aircraft carrier to sea with planes on it. The NHS has been deliberately set on run down, with increasing private profits being stripped out and our cradle to grave support network is almost fatally broken.Β The civil service is in disarray after the chaos of the Cummings years, and our leading position at the top table setting high standards in the EU has disappeared with Brexit, and we are now allowing pollutants in agriculture that are banned elsewhere. Our reputation internationally has fallen with our threat to break international laws and regulations which we signed up to and the continued determination by some [confirmed by Jenrick for the Tories and Tice for the Reform Party Ltd] to leave the ECHR, which we were instrumental in setting up, driven by Churchill, has been treated with dismay by our international partners. The one plus has been our determination in backing Ukraine against Putin, although our hypocrisy in courting Russian investment and donations to political parties has given an edge of hypocrisy. There remain many things which I am very proud in our history, but I dismay at the determination to dumb the country down in the last few years, internationally, politically, economically and legally, to the levels of cheap labour countries and in human rights values to the level of Belarus and Russia. So,proud of plenty in the past, but not much these days.

The situation in the country reminds me very much of the Gas. Leader [Johnson/Barton] with plenty of fans who hang on his every word and believe he is the next messiah leaves, whoever replaces him is never going to fill his boots in the eyes of the faithful whatever he is proved to have done or his track record or his utterances after departure. No honeymoon for replacement, faithful want them gone. Fractured fanbase split with need for someone to bring them together. Who will save us in this dark hour?

Blimey...Champers of choice in the City One of the most ridiculous conversations I ever heard was a severely drunk London colleague, who thought he was something special [!!], arguing at the Malmaison Manchester bar with the barman over whether Veuve Clicquot 1966 was better than 1968. He made a right tit of himself and was just embarrassing. Have never liked or shall we say [cough] appreciated champagne. Mere peasant me!
