Germany vs Hungary this evening. 70 years since the 'miracle of Bern' World Cup Final in 1954. Hungary were undisputedly the best team in the world. Hungary had beaten West Germany 8-3 in the qualifying round. (OK, some players were rested). Germany was still on it's knees after WWII. Germany had a regional, semi-professional league. Hungary went 2-0 up inside 10 minutes. Game over? Nah. West German goals in the 10th and 18th minute restored parity. Helmut Rahn scored the winner in the 84th minute. TOR! So I'm looking forward to this one. Definitely wearing the 1954 replica shirt. Have you washed it since 1954? 🙄

Hmm,Epping, did'nt plenty of the West Germany team die young, due to the performance enhancing drugs injected into them pre kick off. Hardly a " miracle".

Sound like what I'd have expected more from East of the iron curtain.

Hmm,Epping, did'nt plenty of the West Germany team die young, due to the performance enhancing drugs injected into them pre kick off. Hardly a " miracle". What is your source for this Basel? Well Epping, Google eg 'West Germany Hungary World Cup Final, performing enhancing drugs'.Then take your pick. As for many of the German team dieing prematurely,I would have to search but I did read it years a go. The performace drug enhancement a doctor gave the West German team was at the time not illegal,so officially they did not cheat as it were. It has since been made illegal. I'm sorry, for the sake of all football and the Hungarian team that was clearly the worlds top dogs got 'cheated' by the Germans. I wonder what the name and more importantly the origins of the performance drug enhancer the doctor gave the Germans. Hmm.

may have injected the West German players with Pervitin, a powerful type of methamphetamine that boosts stamina and energy level. This was a crucial aid in a tight game, played in deplorable weather conditions, that was deadlocked late into the second half. Reports of the methamphetamine injections were later denied, but 35 million doses had been manufactured for use by German soldiers during World War II, thus there were large quantities still available in Germany. Officials did admit that West German players had indeed been given injections, but of vitamin concoctions. 'May'. Maybe. Blogs! Actual newspapers of record: www.nytimes.com/2013/08/09/sports/west-germany-engaged-in-sports-doping-in-1970s-study-says.htmlMore informed and assertive.

Sounds more like someone is a little peeved it wasn't called the miracle of Basel. I understand the 'miracle of Basel' actually occurs when Basel posts a link to a credible news source.

Sorry to break it to you Epping, but surely it's not hard to believe the Germans 'cheated' against the superior Hungarian team? A nation desperate for good news.Etc Apologies for no link,I'm still computer illiterate, but it's out there. Perhaps if BlueTornado is reading he'll put a link up. Right, work beckons....

Report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport journalist at Stuttgart ArenaJamal Musiala scored again as Germany continued their winning start to Euro 2024 with victory over Hungary to become the first side through to the knockout stages. The Bayern Munich forward impressed throughout and netted midway through the first half, drilling a powerful effort inches past the post afterwards, and was later given a standing ovation when he was substituted late in the second half. Hungary were frustrated with his opener, claiming a foul from Ilkay Gundogan on defender Willi Orban before the Barcelona midfielder teed up Musiala to fire into the roof of the net. A video assistant referee (VAR) check confirmed the on-field decision as Musiala celebrated with his team-mates in front of Hungary supporters behind the goal. Hungary thought they had snatched an equaliser on the stroke of half-time but Roland Sallai's rebound header was ruled out for a clear offside. Instead, Germany extended their lead in the second half when former Manchester City player Gundogan was left unmarked to slot comfortably past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. After their dominant 5-1 win over Scotland, Germany were made to work harder for the win here - with Hungary threatening on occasions and defending stubbornly. Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai showed his quality on set-pieces, curling a terrific effort goalwards which needed saving by Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Szoboszlai came close again in a bright period in the first half but was denied by an excellent block from Jonathan Tah. Germany's performance was encouraging though. They showed patches of creativity and control, doing enough to get over the line and make it six points from their opening two games. Their place in the last 16 is confirmed and they will finish as Group A winners if they avoid defeat against Switzerland in Frankfurt on Sunday (20:00 BST). It is a damaging outcome for Hungary, following their opening defeat by Switzerland, and they will need to bounce back from their frustrations to beat Scotland next to have any chance of going through. "I've never complained in my career as a coach. I've never looked for excuses but what the referee did tonight - I mean, come on," said Hungary boss Marco Rossi afterwards. "It's something that I think even the Germans have seen - the referee had double standards. The VAR at this level didn’t say anything. "Germany would have won anyways because they were better than us but the referee was the worst on the pitch."

Aggressive, on the front foot, couldn't get off to a better start. "We make a mistake but make no mistake about it, Tony Ralston was unbelievable after that mistake. Second half, he was different class. "We had our chances but so did they. We were a lot more happy with that performance. We'll take the draw and we've taken it into the last game and that's all we can ask. "We need to go again Sunday because that's a massive game for us now. We can take a lot of positives from tonight but we can also tweak a little thing and improve even more and that's a good thing. "We need to get to bed now and recover. Come Sunday we'll bee good to go with the backing that we've got." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/19/287fbe81-4cf3-4903-b442-15c9caff8d0a.jpgScotland head coach Steve Clarke tells BBC One: "It was nice to see them. We didn't turn up in the first game. We're a good team when we play. "We didn't get on the front foot at all against Germany. We sat back too much. Tonight we were determined to make sure we went pressing, went after the ball. "We played two of the players a little bit higher up the pitch to try and get that early press and it worked tonight against a very good Switzerland team. "Heart-breaking moment [for Anthony Ralston] but it happens in football. If it falls to any other Swiss player, I don't think they score. If it falls to Xherdan Shaqiri, you know where the ball's going to end up. We get harshly punished for a small mistake but we responded. "We stayed in the game, we worked hard, we created our own chances. Switzerland are a good team, they created their chances. "We always knew that the points we require would come from these two games. We've got one point now, that means we have a chance going into the last game to get three points. "I believe if we get those three points, we go to the next stage." Scotland head coach Steve Clarke was also asked if Kieran Tierney would miss Sunday's match after being taken off on a stretcher against Switzerland "Definitely out," he said. "It looks pretty bad. We have to assess it but Kieran won't make the next game. "He's a top player for us. Does ever so well. It's a shame but someone else has got to step in and step up to the mark." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/19/b88e71fd-02a3-4741-818c-5191a927562f.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/2987/live/c6515a30-2ec5-11ef-a044-9d4367d5b599.jpg

England very poor, but I suppose Mr Southgate will say 'it's all about qualifying from the group' which is true to be fair.
At the same time not very convincing though,is it.

So this looks like a QF defeat against the first decent team we face?
At WC in Russia, scraped past an average Columbia on pens, beat a poor Sweden and then lost to a decent Croatia in the SF.
At EC, beat a poor Germany, beat an average to poor Ukraine and then beat an average Denmark because losing to an average to poor Italy in the final.
The team is overhyped and too many of the 'big' players flop when it matters (Kane being the worst offender).
I preferred the Euro 96 and WC 98 teams to this one.
The main thing in our favour is that the quality of international football has fallen so dramatically.

Quality is certainly not in abundance, raving about Germany, who demolished a piss poor bunch of Scots, never really impressed against Hungary, be interesting how they manage against a sort of half decent Swiss team.. Spain squeezed past against an average Italian team, mainly because they don't score enough..other than that there is no team that you could really say, yup there are your winners

Dembele for me is not a world-class player (basically flopped at Barca considering what they paid for him) and so there is a lot hanging on Mbappe. Italy have West Ham flop Scamacca upfront and Spain the Chelsea flop Morata. Germany are nowhere near what they used to be, including at Euro 96. There is an awful lot of mediocrity on show, just as there was in the 2022 WC.
