A Gareth Southgate game?
Looking like we can score, score, but instead of keeping up the attacking intent,we sit back and invite the opposition on to us.
It worked against Serbia, but against eg Germany, Holland, France or Italy etc.Hmm.
Still,a very welcome 3 points.
Apparently, only once in the last ten starter games in European Championships ,did England win.So looking at it from that statistic it's been a good start.

National anthem 👍👍👍makes me so proud , come on England ... and so you should be but the English fans are an embarrassment to the nation. No respect for other nations, booing their national anthem. Idiots. Booing Serbia's national anthem is entirely fine by me. Their fans aren't any more respectful to other countries, and that's without even getting into politics. More embarrassed by the 'ten bombers' chant, as the Germans made an effort to atone and make amends in a way that Serbia has never done. This England side really aren't all that. Very kind draws papered over the cracks and they will get found out against a decent side.

They will make it a battle for you and I think we dealt with it really well. There was a spell in the second half where we got camped in our box and we found it hard to get out but it was an important win tonight. "It's a tough game. They are a tough team and have good players. We stood up to it well and it is good to get the three points and [for us] to progress. It's good that we got the win today." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/16/dbd9a356-553e-4f37-be0a-2c9c6e3d10e3.pngEngland manager Gareth Southgate speaking to BBC: "They are a strong team. We had to suffer a bit which I think is really good for us. I think to defend the box the way we did was really good for us. I was really pleased with a lot of the play. Second half we didn't keep it as well as I would have liked but to get the win is very important." On Jude Bellingham: "He writes his own script. The timing of his runs. It was a super bit of play in the build-up of his play. I think all of our forward players looked really good. "I am confident we will score goals. Playing against a back give it is not easy to create chances and we did. I liked the fact we had to suffer without the ball because that is an area we have worked on a lot this week. We were obviously much better than last week at doing that." On Trent Alexander-Arnold: "I have to say, he has been really diligent in getting his positioning right. I think he adapted and adjusted really well and used the ball well. We have got a squad and we need to use it." More from Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about Marc Guehi: "Really pleased for him. "I saw the player I have seen every week for his club, positionally he was sound. Today was going to be a particular test in terms of his stature as he's not the biggest centre-back, but he dealt with the aerial threat really well." On injuries:"Kieran [Trippier] was just cramp. As far as I know everyone has come through well." More from England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I didn't expect it to be any other way. "We played an opponent who can play well and be direct. I was pleased we played the way we did in the first half, we should have probably had a second with the chances we created." On Jude Bellingham: "He seems to write his own scripts. He welcomes the attention and he keeps delivering. "He had some outstanding moments in the game and equally our two wide players and central midfielder players did well working around him." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/16/3aefb286-e392-47e3-8cd5-554ad9759476.png

I thought what happened was entirely predictable. England offered no threat whatsoever down the left in the first half. Foden didn't stay wide and went inside and we have a right-footed left full-back. It was pretty obvious that the Serbian coach would do something to stop Saka, as that was our main threat in the first half, and that is what he did the second half. Then England had no threat whatsoever down either flank, with Harry Kane double marked in the middle. What Southgate should have done was to be aware that the Serbian coach would do this, so introduce some threat down the left! Southgate should have been pro-active, but it does seem as though he is unable to do this. I think every Sunday League manager could see what would happen in the second-half! It was crying out for Eze to be brought on on the left, or heaven's forbid, a Jack Grealish?
and why oh why do so many England players, when they receive the ball, stand still with their foot on top of that ball, pointing at other players and spaces etc. When you are stood still with the ball you are going nowhere and doing nothing.
We will not win a thing with a right-back playing left-back! We should have taken Dennis Mitchell from Palace!

He should have been embarrassed to celebrate Man City's title win, given he made little or no contribution, and was instead at the front of the celebrations. Needs to grow up and realise you are only as good as your last game. Maddison is a decent player but also has an unfortunate attitude and doesn't seem to realise that you do your talking on the pitch, not off it. The main thing in England's favour is the obvious decline in the quality of international football. Spain, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands are shadows of their former selves.

Great possession, attacking, accurate passing, great goal. Then sit back, get deeper and deeper, in the end I really felt it would be a draw, the way Serbia finished. When Kane has to be the last line of defence in front of your keeper, you can't get much deeper. This England team appears good when going forward and attacking, but make me very nervous. Also reminds me why I rarely get optimistic these days about England in tournaments. As for the English fans, the 10 German bombers chant amongst other similar chants is embarrassing and why many of our fans are like children compared to other fans. We don't seem to have the thugs we use to have, just ill mannered pathetic gobby kids.

You could have written the script for it. 1-0 up. Drop back. Sit deep. Defend. Bloody awful. Really sad to see our 'supporters' behave like this. Crushingly embarrassing. The only way we'll win this tournament is if Southgate gets sacked. Which is unlikely.

For the first time in my lifetime IMHO we legitimately have the best team in a competition with the technical ability to match. If we had put our foot down yesterday we would have won that 3/4 nil but we never. You are right though, if we continue this way we will be found out. Southgate's record is the minimum he should have done during his time in charge of our nation given the players he has had.We need a manager like Harry Redknapp that would get us going and attacking teams as Southgate is going to cost us. Also, while there some English humorous tone is singing about the war and German bombers and the world cup etc... I always cringe alittle as it's abit classless.

You may be right about Grealish with regard to Manchester City’s season but we needed him to actually dribble, make the opposition tackle him and give England a different type of player. Gordon and Saka are very good players with better commitment perhaps but they don’t give defenders the problems Grealish can when they’re getting tired. I’m sorry he’s not there. UTG!

Report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport journalist at Frankfurt Arena.Slovakia caused an upset in their Euro 2024 opener as they stunned Group E favourites Belgium in a chaotic encounter in Frankfurt. There was drama in the final minutes as Romelu Lukaku thought he had equalised, only for the video assistant referee (VAR) to rule it out for handball in the build-up. It was the second goal he had scored that had been ruled out by VAR after earlier poking in a header across goal from Amadou Onana. Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead when he capitalised on a mistake at the back by Manchester City's Jeremy Doku, stunning Belgium, ranked third in the world - Slovakia are 45 places below in 48th. After missing countless chances throughout, several falling to all-time top scorer Lukaku, Belgium eventually left empty-handed. In a topsy-turvy 90 minutes, substitute Johan Bakayoko was denied by a superb goalline clearance from Slovakia's David Hancko. Lukaku's frustrations grew as chances kept passing by - the best coming within three minutes after Doku had gone on a spectacular run down the right. Belgium's inability to grasp control meant they trailed at the break, with Doku's costly mistake helping Slovakia get the upper hand. Manchester City's Kevin de Bruyne remained a threat, while Arsenal's Leandro Trossard curled an effort over the bar following a poor clearance from goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Lukas Haraslin also came close on occasions for Slovakia, fizzing a superbly executed volley towards goal which needed saving by Koen Casteels, before placing another strike wide in the second half. Belgium, who exited the 2022 World Cup at the group stage, must respond when they take on Romania next - who recorded a stunning 3-0 win over Ukraine in the other match on Monday afternoon. As Belgium travel to Cologne on Saturday looking to regain ground, Slovakia face Ukraine, no doubt buoyed by their perfect start to Euro 2024.

Monday 17th June 2024 - UEFA European Championship - Group Stage - Group D
France 1 Austria 0
FULL-TIME - Austria 0-1 France
Report by Phil McNulty, Chief football writer in Dusseldorf.Kylian Mbappe produced a moment of magic - mixed with good fortune - to ensure France's Euro 2024 campaign got off to a winning start against a stubborn Austria in Dusseldorf. But he was also at the centre of a late injury scare. France's captain and Real Madrid's latest "Galactico" was replaced in the 90th minute as an eventful night ended with him covered in blood following a painful blow to his nose after an aerial clash with Austria defender Kevin Danso. Mbappe also picked up a yellow card for returning to the field before falling to the ground, then going off. He had a mixed night with his finishing but still delivered a decisive contribution to seal three important points against Ralf Rangnick's well-drilled Austrian side. The 25-year-old showed lightning pace and fast footwork to leave Austria full-back Phillipp Mwene in his wake before Mbappe's cross was diverted into his own net by Leeds United centre-back Max Wober's header seven minutes before half-time. Austria missed their best chance just moments earlier when Christoph Baumgartner's shot from close range was blocked by the feet of France keeper Mike Maignan. Their frustration was further increased by Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano's poor decision to award a goal kick rather than a corner. Mbappe, who saw a first-half shot well saved by Austria keeper Patrick Pentz, produced an early contender for the miss of Euro 2024 after the break when he showed astonishing pace to race past Wober but, with the goal at his mercy, he held his head in disbelief after shooting wide. France were not at their best but, with veteran N'Golo Kante producing a magnificent individual performance after two years away from the international stage, they did enough to get past a determined Austria and set the platform for the key Group D game against old rivals the Netherlands on Friday. Just why did the Austrian forward Baumgartner get a yellow? Made an attempt to get the ball in a race against the French keeper and beat him to it,a "forwards chance" dumb decision

According to the local police report on the Serbia - England game, England fans lost 7 - 1, seven Serbian were " detained" and only one England fan was " detained, no details given as to any punishment ( shooting at dawn has been ruled out) Also FIFA are investigating derrogatory language aimed at England players in the same game, The England camp has,it said not reported anything on these lines, There are FIFA observing officers at the game,so possibly it is their report that has come to light

FULL-TIME - Turkey 3-1 Georgia
Match report by Charlotte Coates, BBC Sport journalist.Teenager Arda Guler scored on his European Championship debut as Turkey broke Georgia's hearts with a thrilling Group F victory in Dortmund. Right-back Mert Muldur gave Turkey the lead in the 25th minute with an outrageous volley into the top corner, leaving Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili no chance. But seven minutes later, Georges Mikautadze scored Georgia's first goal in a major tournament after expertly guiding Giorgi Kochorashvili's cross into the near corner. In the 65th minute, Real Madrid forward Guler became the third teenager to score on his Euros debut with a sublime, curling strike into the top corner from 25 yards. Georgia, also playing in a Euros for the first time, fought valiantly and almost snatched a leveller. Having shown plenty of heart and skill, Willy Sagnol's side came close when Kochorashvili missed a late opportunity, having earlier hit the bar. And in a frantic finale, they struck the post and had a goalbound effort from Budu Zivzivadze blocked by the head of Samet Akaydin in the fifth minute of added time. But Turkey sealed the success with the last kick of the game as substitute Kerem Akturkoglu broke clear and, with keeper Mamardashvili having come up for a corner, rolled a finish into an empty net. Dortmund's famous yellow wall became the red wall as Turkish fans celebrated wildly after their side - on manager Vincenzo Montella's 50th birthday - picked up a valuable three points. Turkey will look to make it two wins on the bounce on Saturday when they face Portugal, while Georgia play the Czech Republic.

Gutted for the Czech Republic. Anything to wipe that smirk off of ronaldo's face.

Germany vs Hungary this evening. 70 years since the 'miracle of Bern' World Cup Final in 1954. Hungary were undisputedly the best team in the world. Hungary had beaten West Germany 8-3 in the qualifying round. (OK, some players were rested). Germany was still on it's knees after WWII. Germany had a regional, semi-professional league. Hungary went 2-0 up inside 10 minutes. Game over? Nah. West German goals in the 10th and 18th minute restored parity. Helmut Rahn scored the winner in the 84th minute. TOR! So I'm looking forward to this one. Definitely wearing the 1954 replica shirt.
