The stupidity of not taking a natural left back (as Shaw might not be fit enough) is there for all to see. The stupidity of playing Alexander-Arnold as an 'experiment' and totally out of position is there for all to see. It reminded me of when Beckham decided he was going to play quarter back against N. Ireland. That went well didn't it. Kane is miles off of the pace. Either carrying a knock, or totally shattered. He shouldn't be starting. But he's one of Southgate's BFFs, so he'll start, look lethargic and get the hook around the hour mark. It's all a bit crap.

How many meaningless friendlies and nations league games has he had to try Alexander-Arnold out in this position? In any case, I could understand playing him as an advanced right winger but not as a CM. Shaw has never convinced me he should be first-choice LB. Remember the Euro 96 team had Stuart Pearce. Saka can play at LB. Why not play him there and then play either Maddison, Rashford or Grealish in a more inverted advanced LAM role? Or at least why not, if they were actually in the squad? The problem is that we haven't really integrated the fringe players like Watkins meaning they will have to be thrown in at the deep end if they need to be selected.

Report by Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalist at Red Bull Arena, Leipzig.Xavi Simons had a second-half goal controversially ruled out as the Netherlands and France played out the first goalless draw of Euro 2024. The French started without Kylian Mbappe after he broke his nose in the win against Austria on Monday and they clearly missed their captain as they failed to take a number of chances. But it will be the Netherlands who will feel most aggrieved at not claiming the three points after Simons’ strike was chalked off. The 21-year-old’s drive from distance was disallowed by the on-field officials, led by referee Anthony Taylor, for an apparent obstruction on the goalkeeper by Denzel Dumfries, who was standing in an offside position. That prompted a lengthy check by the video assistant referee, who ultimately backed up the original decision. It was harsh on the Dutch, but they could have been two or three goals down before then if Antoine Griezmann had not missed a number of big chances. He first missed a shot from close range in the first half after being set up by Adrien Rabiot, who perhaps should have shot himself. Griezmann then sent a decent chance wide before prodding a tame effort at Bart Verbruggen after good work by N’Golo Kante. Wout Weghorst, who scored a late winner against Poland in the Netherlands' first game, was again sent on in the closing stages but could not find the net this time. The result means both sides are on four points in Group D, while Poland are eliminated. Friday 21st June 2024 - UEFA European Championship - Group Stage - Group D

Report by Chris Bevan, BBC Sport journalist at Olympiastadion Berlin. Two late goals gave Austria a hard-fought win that boosted their hopes of reaching the last 16 at Euro 2024, but Poland became the first nation to be knocked out. After Austria and Poland had lost their opening matches, they both came to Berlin knowing that another defeat could spell the end of their tournament. The high stakes gave the encounter the feel of a knockout tie, with both sets of fans creating a noisy atmosphere at the Olympiastadion, matched by a frenetic tempo on the pitch. It was Austria who struck first, when Gernot Trauner rose at the near post to head home Phillipp Mwene’s cross. Poland were struggling to get out of their own half at that point but quickly improved and began pushing for an equaliser. It arrived after 30 minutes, when a cross from the right was not properly cleared, and although Jan Bednarek’s shot was blocked, Krzysztof Piatek was first to the rebound to fire low into the net. Clear chances were at a premium after that, even when Poland’s talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski belatedly emerged off the bench, but as the game entered the final stages it was Austria who found the inspiration they needed. Marko Arnautovic’s dummy allowed Christoph Baumgartner time and space to advance to the edge of the area, before he coolly slotted past Wojciech Szczesny. Austria’s victory was sealed a few minutes later. With Poland pouring forward in search of an equaliser, Marcel Sabitzer ran clear and although he was brought down by Szczesny, Arnautovic converted the resulting penalty. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/21/f7bdb8a2-7789-4044-a944-ab2cba6591f4.pngFriday 21st June 2024 - UEFA European Championship - Group Stage - Group E

Report by Marissa Thomas, BBC Sport journalist.Roman Yaremchuk scored a crucial winner for Ukraine as they came from behind to beat Slovakia and keep their Euro 2024 campaign alive. The Valencia striker had been on the pitch for 13 minutes when he gave his side the lead. Yaremchuk was alert to Mykola Shaparenko's ball over the top and finished smartly. A brilliant touch allowed him to delicately nudge the ball past Slovakia goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into the bottom left corner from six yards out. Ivan Schranz scored after 17 minutes to put Slovakia in front, with his second goal in as many games, before Ukraine came back to seal a huge victory. Shaparenko equalised for Ukraine in the 54th minute, sweeping home from close range following Oleksandr Zinchenko's cross, before Yaremchuk made sure of three priceless points ten minutes from time. It is the first time Ukraine have come from behind to win a match at the Euros since a 2-1 victory against Sweden in 2012.

Report by Phil McNulty, Chief football writer in Cologne.Kevin De Bruyne inspired Belgium to the first Euro 2024 victory they desperately required with a virtuoso display in a thrilling victory over Romania in Cologne. Belgium were under pressure in Group E after losing their opening game to Slovakia, but responded with an outstanding attacking display to illustrate exactly why they are rated among the favourites in Germany. In a magnificent, colourful atmosphere, Youri Tielemans' low drive put them ahead after 73 seconds, setting the platform for Belgium to create a host of chances. Romania managed to keep them at bay, the luckless Romelu Lukaku seing a third goal ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee in the tournament when he was adjudged to be offside from De Bruyne’s perfect pass. Belgium and De Bruyne were not to be denied, and Manchester City's midfielder made the game safe when he poked home from close range after 79 minutes – leaving the group on a knife-edge as all four teams have three points. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/22/07224bc4-30de-430e-a205-228af0f75450.pngSaturday 22nd June 2024 - UEFA European Championship - Group Stage - Group F

Report by Tom Rostance, BBC Sport journalist.Substitute Saba Lobjanidze wasted a golden chance for Georgia with the final kick of the game as the debutants claimed a first ever point in a major tournament with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic. Georgia, the lowest-ranked side in the tournament, took the lead in first-half stoppage time when striker Georges Mikautadze slotted in from the penalty spot. But the Czech Republic - quarter-finalists three years ago - were by far the more dangerous side throughout and finally replied when Patrik Schick turned in after substitute Ondrej Lingr hit the post. Schick then limped off with an injury as Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili produced save after save to ensure a share of the spoils. And there was still time for Lobjanidze to fire over after a three-on-one encounter in the final seconds of the match. The result means both sides head into their final games in Group F on Wednesday with a chance to progress to the last 16. Saturday 22nd June 2024 - UEFA European Championship - Group Stage - Group F

Report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport journalist at Westfalenstadion.Portugal booked their place in the last 16 as group winners at Euro 2024 following a routine victory over Turkey in Dortmund. Manchester City's Bernardo Silva opened the scoring midway through the first half, striking first time past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir after Nuno Mendes' cross from the left was deflected into his path. A calamitous own goal doubled Portugal's lead when defender Samet Akaydin failed to look up before passing it back to Bayindir, who could not prevent the ball from rolling into his own net. That dampened the exuberant Turkish support, which had begun with hundreds of fans marching to the stadium from the city centre, draped in flags. Portugal's support was equally impressive, if fewer in number, and they celebrated as their side played with fluidity and composure. Their team sealed the win when Cristiano Ronaldo unselfishly teed up Bruno Fernandes for a tap-in to make it 3-0 before an hour was played.

Report by Scott Mullen, BBC Sport Scotland at the Stuttgart Arena.Scotland crashed out of Euro 2024 in the most heart-wrenching fashion as Kevin Csoboth's 100th-minute winner earned Hungary a stunning late victory. The Scots, who could still have held faint hopes of the last 16 with a draw, were stung on the counter-attack to spark bedlam in the Stuttgart Arena. It means Steve Clarke's side, who did not register a shot on target, finish on one point and once again fail to make it out of a group at a major tournament. Hungary, who lost Barnabas Varga to a sickening injury, finish Group A in third and still have a chance of going through as one of the four best third-placed teams. Report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport journalist at Frankfurt Stadium.Substitute Niclas Fullkrug scored a late equaliser for Germany as they rescued a draw with Switzerland to top Group A. The Swiss thought they were going through to the last 16 as group winners after an early goal from Dan Ndoye until Fullkrug headed in the equaliser. There was an outburst of celebration from home supporters behind the goal as Germany maintained their unbeaten start to Euro 2024. It was a blow to Switzerland, who had defended resolutely for more than 90 minutes but they still progress to the knockout stages. "At the end I think this point is well deserved. We risked a lot, as we could have conceded a second goal," said Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann. "It was a very strong group and a very good match. I think if we had scored that first goal, it would have been very difficult for Switzerland." Murat Yakin's Swiss side knew victory would see them leapfrog Germany and they almost delivered in Frankfurt until pressure took its toll in stoppage time. Germany, who had largely frustrated the home fans in the stands, created a flurry of chances late on and eventually did enough. Earlier, Swiss fans were bouncing and singing in the stands after Ndoye had placed a first-time shot into the roof of the net from Remo Freuler's dangerous cross.

Croatia 1 Italy 1
Report by Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalist at Red Bull Arena, Leipzig Mattia Zaccagni scored in the final minute of stoppage time as Italy broke Croatia’s hearts with a late equaliser that ensures the defending champions progress to the last 16 of Euro 2024. Luka Modric had thought he had won it for Croatia to send them through as runners-up in Group B when he slammed a shot into the roof of the net early in the second half. That came after he had seen a penalty saved, but the swift response to that setback looked like it would be enough for the Croatians. But Italy levelled in stoppage time when Zaccagni curled home in the 98th minute to ensure they go through with group winners Spain. It was a cruel blow for Croatia, who had been minutes away from progressing but two points is now unlikely to be enough to finish as one of the best third-placed teams. The result means Italy will play Switzerland in the last 16 on Saturday, 29th June.

Albania 0 Spain 1
Report by Michael Emons, BBC Sport journalist Spain maintained their 100% record at Euro 2024 as they defeated and eliminated Albania – a result that meant England, France and the Netherlands all secured last-16 places. Former Manchester City forward Ferran Torres, now at Barcelona, gave a much-changed Spain side the lead in the 13th minute, finishing low first time from Dani Olmo's pass with the ball bouncing in off the post. Kristjan Asllani's powerful 25-yard strike for Albania drew a fine save from Spain goalkeeper David Raya, who spent last season at Arsenal on loan from Brentford. Raya also did well to keep out Fulham striker Armando Broja's shot on the turn, as Albania could not find an equaliser and finished bottom of Group B.

Nonsense. Many start poorly. Teams like Portugal, Italy, Spain. We will do well. Kane must go Indeed, and England started poorly in both WC 1990 and Euro 96. England only came alive in Euro 96 after the Scotland penalty miss and the infamous Gazza goal. My concern is that almost everything coming out of the England camp is so negative. The manager raising fitness and the absence of Phillips, Kane suggesting that the team are not equipped to press, and so on... I stand by the OP. I don't think this is an exceptional team and I think many of the players are overrated and come up short when it matters. I am with you about the team being hugely overrated. The best team we’ve ever had ? Ballcocks. Have they forgotten 66. It’s not about the talent but being a team, playing for the shirt and for each other. I know it’s an absurd comparison but looks at rovers, at Twerton. The whole team was worth little but they were together, played for one another. Wanted it. England need that bond or talent will mean nothing. have a great day sir

Are you for real. Nobody gives a f**k about these reports. Not necessary and some of us do give a good read to them. Spiteful and not necessary

Klopp would suit the England job. I think you will find news re Klopp will emerge, I don’t know when but I noticed several signs in his facial movements, walking and speech, so much so that I write to LFC. Billy Connolly only found out he has Parkinson’s due to a viewer writing in. I felt an urge to do the same. I believe his is ill. We shall see, hope I am totally wrong

Seeing the disrespect he was shown by Salah made my blood absolutely boil. If I was LFC's next manager, I would put the Egyptian on the next flight to the Saudi league.
