David Moyes: West Ham set to open contract talks with manager in new year..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5AB1/production/_132171232_gettyimages-1258516264.jpg David Moyes led West Ham to Europa Conference League glory in June - their first major trophy for 43 yearsWest Ham United are set to open contract talks with manager David Moyes in the new year. The club climbed to sixth in the Premier League after winning 2-0 at second-placed Arsenal on Thursday. Moyes, 60, who is in his second spell as boss at West Ham, is out of contract in the summer of 2024. "We're getting ready to talk. I don't think any of us are jumping to get it done too quickly," said Moyes after the Emirates Stadium victory. "I think we are just happy to make sure we get it done. We will do - I don't see any problems with that at all. "We are not one of the top teams. We are trying to get up and grow the team. For West Ham to be in Europe is a great period." Moyes was first appointed West Ham boss in November 2017 but left at the end of that season when his contract was not renewed, only to return for his second stint in December 2019. He has since led West Ham to two top-seven finishes in the Premier League and earned the club its first major trophy in 43 years by winning the Europa Conference League in June. On Friday, West Ham announced their financial results for the year to 31 May 2023 which showed a net pre-tax loss of £18.3m. Joint chair David Sullivan said "the future looks extremely bright" for the Premier League club. The figures, which do not take into account the Hammers' historic Europa Conference League final victory against Fiorentina, show West Ham's turnover fell to £236.7m, down £16m on the previous season, with wages rising to £136.8m. The club say an outlay on players of £184m over the period in question was part of the reason for the loss. Declan Rice's club record £100m summer move to Arsenal is not included in the results. Moyes is not mentioned by Sullivan in his assessment of the past financial year. However, the statement does say the club's "strong relationship with the manager will continue to assist in building and improving the squad". "The future continues to look extremely bright for West Ham United," said Sullivan. "We have enjoyed an unprecedented level of success over the course of the past three years - but I believe there is even more to come." Among the other notable points within the financial statement, which pays tribute to former co-chair David Gold and his daughter Jacqueline who died within weeks of each other early in 2023, is confirmation that West Ham have repaid a £55m loan to MSD Holdings and replaced it with a "more favourable" £40m overdraft facility with Barclays Bank.

Tomas Soucek: West Ham midfielder signs new contract until June 2027..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/855A/production/_132183143_gettyimages-1883324260.jpg Tomas Soucek has scored eight goals this season for West HamWest Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek has signed a new contract until June 2027. The Czech Republic international, 28, has scored 30 goals in 182 games since joining - initially on loan - from Slavia Prague in January 2020. Soucek, who was due to be out of contract this summer, said: "I feel that this is my home now, and I want to achieve even more in the future with this great club." Manager David Moyes said Soucek was a "fantastic servant" for West Ham. "Tomas did a magnificent job to help us avoid relegation when he first arrived here, and since then he has played a major part in the progress we have made and the success we have enjoyed," said Moyes. "He is a model professional, gives absolutely everything for his team every time he steps on the pitch, and is a hugely popular character, loved by the players, staff and everyone at the club." Soucek said: "I am very happy to have signed this new contract and very proud that I can continue my career here. "Coming to England was a new experience for me and we have been successful in the time that I have been here." West Ham won the Europa Conference League last season - their first trophy for 43 years - and are currently sixth in the Premier League.

TUESDAY 2nd JANUARY 2024 - PREMIER LEAGUE - RESULT
West Ham United 0 Brighton & Hove Albion 0

Brighton had the bulk of possession and better chances in their first match of the new year. But they were unable to break through a West Ham defence which has now kept four consecutive clean sheets. A point moves Brighton into seventh place, above Manchester United, while West Ham are three points further ahead in sixth. In a first half low on quality and chances, West Ham came closest to taking the lead when James Ward-Prowse's powerful volley was saved by the legs of Jason Steele. For Brighton, Jack Hinshelwood and Pascal Gross were both denied by point-blank stops from home keeper Alphonse Areola. Brighton continued to dominate possession after the break, Areola again having to react sharply to Pervis Estupinan's low shot on 55 minutes before Joao Pedro shot straight at the Frenchman after a mazy run. Tomas Soucek poked wide from six yards in West Ham's clearest second-half chance, before Jakub Moder slashed over for Brighton from close range in the closing minutes. Match Stats: WHU 0 BHA 0 - Possession: 32% - 68% - Shots: 6-22 - On Target: 2-8 - Corners: 2-0 - Referee: Samuel Barrott - Attendance: 62,462

I thought Brighton played very well and were the better team. "They had a few chances and their goalkeeper made some good saves. I think we might have had the best chance of the game with Tomas Soucek but when it didn't go in, I said to myself 'we probably need to fight our way to a 0-0' and the players did a great job in getting that. "When you are playing really good teams, which we have been especially in this Christmas period, we've had to be really compact defensively and as organised as we can be. "Tonight we lacked the quality that might make the difference at the other end of the pitch when we have the ball. But we are playing with two centre-halves who haven't played that much recently and a full-back who is the same. I thought the boys at the back have done a brilliant job. They have done what they had to do and my goalkeeper played very well. We got a point from it." West Ham boss David Moyes told BBC Sport: "We had a couple of chances. Tomas Soucek had a great chance. "We rode our luck a wee bit. It's been a really good Christmas period, three wins and a draw. No complaints. "All teams need the best players playing. We probably missed a bit of that tonight. I'm really pleased. "For some reason we weren't alowed to play ours [Africa Cup of Nations players] when Salah played for Liverpool last night. "We've got a long way to go. It's been a long Christmas period for the players and they've done a really good job. "I hope we can keep growing and getting better." More from David Moyes speaking to Sky Sports on goalkeeper Alphonse Areola: "He's played really well for us and has made some big saves. He has a big presence in goal. "There were bits of his distribution I'd like to be better and hopefully we can work on things to get that better but his overall performance was excellent. "We need a good goalkeeper and I'm really pleased we have another clean sheet." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/2/aa9861c6-b8f8-4297-8f55-15a4170914e8.png

David Moyes also successfully guided West Ham through the group stage of the Europa League without any issues.
All seems to be well at London Stadium, but what have fans been saying about potential incomings and outgoings this month?
Faith: I honestly don't feel we have the funds due to FFP, but if the opportunity for a back-up full-back or striker comes along that would strengthen the bench. It looks like we're going to lose a few who want to move on, so maybe a loan move for some fringe 'top six' players would give us the numbers to continue competing. Andy: West Ham need a striker, plain and simple. Ben: We need to focus on a left winger. Having Lucas Paqueta in the middle is better than having him on the left. He can be more creative centrally. Maybe we should look at our defence and strengthen it. We are coming off some good performances so let's keep that momentum. Brad: We're looking good at the moment, but there are still ways the squad can improve. It's time to sell Ings and Cornet and bring in a reliable and consistent forward who can create a partnership with Bowen. Midfield and defence are looking good, but one more solid option for each wouldn't hurt in case of injuries. Tim: Another striker to join Bowen up front, as Bowen must stay up front. And whatever happens, do not sell Paqueta!

SUNDAY 7th JANUARY 2024 - THE FA CUP - THIRD ROUND
West Ham United 1 (Bowen 4) Bristol City 1 (Conway 61)
Championship side Bristol City earned a deserved draw against West Ham at London Stadium to force an FA Cup third-round replay.
The Hammers wasted little time in moving through the gears against their Championship opponents, opening the scoring with just four minutes on the clock.
Jarrod Bowen continued his red-hot form by scoring his 14th goal of the campaign after rounding goalkeeper Max O'Leary and squeezing the ball under the body of defender Cameron Pring on the line.
But Bristol City, who boast the joint-fourth best defensive record in the Championship, refused to allow that early setback to define the manner in which the game would unfold, showing bravery on the ball and unity in defence to find a foothold in the tie.
Sam Bell and Rob Dickie both had opportunities to level for the Robins but Lukasz Fabianski stood firm on both occasions to keep West Ham's lead intact.
The Robins returned for the second period with intent, playing the majority of their football in West Ham's half of the field, and their willingness to commit to the attack paid dividends when academy graduate Tommy Conway found space behind the Hammers' backline before drilling beyond Fabianski.
Clear-cut chances for the visitors were few and far between after they drew level and they had to hang on in the closing stages as Danny Ings and Divin Mubama both went close.

West Ham: Lucas Paqueta could be out for 'at least two months' with calf injury..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/179A4/production/_132267669_gettyimages-1914661955.jpg Lucas Paqueta played just 14 minutes of West Ham's FA Cup draw against Bristol City on SundayWest Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta could be sidelined for "at least two months" with a calf injury. The Brazilian suffered a recurrence of the issue in Sunday's FA Cup draw with Bristol City, having initially been injured against Arsenal at the end of December. He missed the goalless draw with Brighton on 2nd January and lasted just 14 minutes of the Bristol City tie. Paqueta is set to see a specialist to determine the extent of the problem. His absence would be a major blow for manager David Moyes as Paqueta emerged as a key figure in West Ham's resurgence during 2023. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/12B84/production/_132267667_gettyimages-1914982452.jpgIt was his pass that created Jarrod Bowen's matchwinner in the Europa Conference League final victory against Fiorentina in June, sealing West Ham's first trophy in 43 years. Meanwhile, Bowen is also set to miss a couple of games after being helped off the pitch with an ankle problem on Sunday. While the damage is not as extensive as initially feared, Bowen is expected to miss the replay with Bristol City at Ashton Gate on 16th January and is unlikely to be fit for the Premier League trip to Sheffield United the following weekend. The injuries come at a point where West Ham are also without another attacking option in Mohammed Kudus, who is at the African Cup of Nations with Ghana, while veteran Michail Antonio has suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee injury sustained on international duty in November. It means a potential loan out of London Stadium for Danny Ings is unlikely to be sanctioned, with West Ham officials looking at trying to bring new players into Moyes' squad. Sunderland winger Jack Clarke and former Tottenham wide man Steven Bergwijn, who is now at Ajax, have both been mentioned as potential targets.

Here are some of your responses:
Michael: We got what we deserved. We were outplayed at times by a mid-table Championship team, didn’t put our very few chances away, and it shows how much we need Paqueta and Kudus. I pray for an early Ghana exit from Afcon. Also, Moyes persists in selecting his failed favourites like Fornals - when Cornet is available and rarely selected but creates more. I don’t fancy us in the replay. Ian: Complacent attitude and lucky not to lose the game. We're missing Kudus and Paqueta. There are too many fringe players who are not good enough. Dave: Another poor performance. Don’t the board and Moyes understand that it costs us good money to watch this rubbish. Moyes' use of substitutes and his tactics never makes sense. We have no depth in the squad and we allow players to leave when we don’t have good quality replacements. Cornwall: Can someone ask Moyes to explain why he doesn’t give the younger players a game? With a load of injuries - and more after Sunday - we could have rested some of our first-team players to help with the Premier League fixtures. Let’s be honest, the Premier League and Europe are our priorities. With limited player resources, we need to prioritise team selection.

Here are some of your comments:
Chris: Paqueta should not have played against Bristol. Why on earth Moyes rested so many players for a quarter final against Liverpool, to then play key players for a third-round FA Cup game is mind-boggling. With injuries and Afcon impacting West Ham, we definitely need to sign players this month. Peter: Time to bring in someone on loan who is hungry for game time and eager to prove himself: Emile Smith-Rowe Dave: It is time to do some shopping. We need a striker or two plus cover in midfield for Paqueta's injury plus another one. We should raise funds by selling Danny Ings, Max Cornet and others that do not make the team. Cornet is a good player but has never been given a chance by Moyes. Why buy him in the first place? Nigel: We have three top class players in Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus. After that, we have a bottom-half squad with average players. With those three now missing for the foreseeable future, our FA Cup run will end and we will struggle to get any more league points, apart from the odd draw. Graza: Utterly bonkers to have risked Paqueta in that game, particularly with the white-flag team selection against Liverpool in the League Cup quarter-final. With Bowen being injured too we should be in the market. However, with Sullivan at the helm, probably not.

West Ham injury crisis grows ahead of FA Cup replay against Bristol City..By James Piercy, Sports Editor.
David Moyes will have to juggle his attacking resources for the FA Cup tie at Ashton Gate
i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/article9023946.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-1914660900.jpg Lucas Paqueta leaves the field against Bristol CityWest Ham will be without Brazilian international Lucas Paqueta for their FA Cup third round replay at Bristol City, while goalscorer Jarrod Bowen is also likely to miss the trip to Ashton Gate after both suffered injuries during Sunday’s tie between the teams. The star duo combined to put West Ham into a fourth-minute lead at the London Stadium but Paqueta left the game 10 minutes later with a calf injury, and England forward Bowen was seen receiving treatment at full-back after clutching his ankle. Paqueta, who has five goals and five assists in all competitions this season, has been ruled out for four weeks while Bowen, who has found the target 14 times in all competitions, has undergone a scan and isn’t expected back in the short-term. Hammers manager David Moyes is already without Mohammed Kudus, who is away with Ghana at the African Cup of Nations, while Michail Antonio has been out since November with a knee ligament issue and suffered a setback last week after a slip in training. Bristol City host West Ham at Ashton Gate next Tuesday after a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium where Tommy Conway’s second-half strike cancelled out Bowen’s opener. The winners of the replay will host Blackpool or Nottingham Forest. Paqueta’s injury saw Moyes introduce Divin Mubama in the middle of his attack, with the 19-year-old making only his 13th appearance for the club, but does also have Danny Ings - who was set for a move away this month but could well now be retained - plus Said Benrahma and Maxwel Cornet in wider attacking roles. The West Ham manager is also waiting on news surrounding centre-back Dinos Mavrapanos who injured his ribs after landing awkwardly when competing for an aerial ball with Conway in the first half. Had the Hammers been victorious on Sunday, they would currently be enjoying a two-week unofficial winter break before their next fixture, Sheffield United in the Premier League on Sunday, January 21, but instead have the replay in BS3 to contend with as Moyes manages his depleted attacking resources.

West Ham United assistant manager Billy McKinlay is speaking to the media before the Hammers' FA Cup third-round replay at Bristol City on Tuesday.. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/15/2092354e-f6ce-4a50-9626-73dc1785572e.jpgWest Ham assistant manager Billy McKinlay has confirmed that Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen will both miss Tuesday's FA Cup third-round replay at Bristol City. Both suffered injuries in the 1-1 draw with the Robins eight days ago, having combined for West Ham's early goal, scored by Bowen. "Lucas Paqueta is not available and the same for Jarrod Bowen," said McKinlay. "We'll determine their availability for future games after tomorrow. "We're short a couple of players so we'll have to make some changes." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/15/bb9d55d7-feea-40c5-9ee7-d6784c64fb5d.jpgWest Ham United assistant manager Billy McKinlay has said the Hammers are used to fixture congestion in what is their third successive season in Europe. In a period where West Ham were supposed to have two weeks off between games, a 1-1 draw against Bristol City in the FA Cup eight days ago means they will face the Robins in a replay at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night. Speaking after comments from striker Michail Antonio about scheduling the replay in the Premier League winter break, McKinlay said it is something David Moyes' side are familiar with. "I've not seen those quotes. The way they've structured the breaks is hybrid, so they struggle to fit the fixtures in, so I've not really looked too deeply into the fixture dates. "The players play a lot of games and the fixture calendar is congested, but that's the way it is. "Our players are certainly used to having this number of games and we're delighted we're progressing in so many competitions." West Ham will play a minimum of 51 matches this season in all competitions. The Hammers played 57 in the 2022/23 campaign and 56 in the 2021/22 season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/15/b0378652-9f2b-44e0-bf4e-b5fe11c5f04b.jpgWest Ham assistant manager Billy McKinlay says Bristol City will pose a tough test in Tuesday's FA Cup third-round replay at Ashton Gate. Eight days ago, the two sides drew 1-1 at the London Stadium and the winner of the replay will face either Nottingham Forest or Blackpool at home in the fourth round. "It's a difficult game," said McKinlay. "We had no surprises in the first game. I think they've fully deserved their draw. "We had some opportunities to probably increase our lead after we scored early, but the game was really difficult and going there it will be a full house, a midweek FA Cup replay and a big game with a good atmosphere, so we're looking forward to it. We're confident we can produce a performance that will hopefully put us through." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/15/c08347bd-3eaa-434b-8fda-3c85beaef312.jpg

FULL-TIME - Bristol City 1-0 West Ham - Bristol City of the Championship have knocked out Premier League West Ham and they go through to the 4th round!ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/16/d94a94c7-52a6-46ac-9622-64f19d6811e4.jpgChampionship Bristol City upset 10-man West Ham to book their place in the FA Cup fourth round. The winner came in the third minute with Tommy Conway intercepting a short pass from Konstantinos Mavropanos and rounding Lukasz Fabianski before composing himself and slotting home. West Ham, who were without key trio Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus, struggled to create, coming closest when a Tomas Soucek effort was tipped over by Max O'Leary. David Moyes' side were reduced to 10 men in the 51st minute when Said Benrahma saw red for kicking out at Joe Williams in retaliation after being fouled. The game continued to have an edge after that, with Bristol City midfielder Taylor Gardner-Hickman fortunate to only see yellow after appearing to swing an arm at Aaron Cresswell, before shoving him in the chest twice. The Robins will play Premier League Nottingham Forest or League One Blackpool, who meet in their third-round replay on Wednesday, in the fourth round on Friday, 26 January. "It is a blow [to go out]," Moyes told BBC Sport. "We would have liked to have been in the cup but we have Europe to look forward to in March and we are in a good position in the league, but we are disappointed to go out." Moyes added he had "no problem" with Benrahma's red card, but added it was "amazing they call this one of the biggest cup competitions but we don't have VAR in all the games". West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to BBC Sport: "Disappointed. Lots of things didn't go for us tonight but overall disappointed. "We had one or two opportunities, especially in the first half. Some good things but not enough to win the game." On West Ham red card: "No problem. I think it is a red card from what I had seen." On no VAR in this game: "It is amazing they call this one of the biggest cup competitions but we don't have VAR in all the games, some you do and some you don't." A blow to go out? "It is a blow because we would have liked to have been in the cup but we have Europe to look forward to in March and we are in a good position in the league, but we are disappointed to go out."
