Luton Town FC
Our medical staff have confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch, but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher.
He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides.
Tom was transferred to hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside.
We would like to thank everyone for their support, concern and loving messages for Locks. 🧡

Just got back from the match. Good to read the latest statement about him being awake and alert. It’s been confirmed as a heart attack which is awful for him and the second in 6 months. Good luck to a very good and whole hearted footballer and a fine young man. FWIW, the response from all the crowd and the staffs of both teams and the emergency services was a credit to them all. First match I’ve ever been to when it’s been abandoned because of a medical emergency on the pitch and perhaps esp to Philip Billing who alerted the referee and the benches immediately Tom fell down. He quickly realised the seriousness of the situation. The crowd realised the seriousness very quickly and I’ve never been in a crowd where there was absolute hush, you could have heard a pin drop. When the match was abandoned both teams came onto the pitch and did a lap clapping the crowd. Rob Edwards also did a lap and was clearly very upset and he got a wonderful response. Good luck Tom. UTG! A heart attack can cause cardiac arrest, but isn't one: a heart attack, or myocardial infarction (MI) is a failure of blood supply to the heart, starving heart muscle of oxygen, most often caused by cardiac arterial narrowing or very often venous thrombo-embolisism (VTE) which is a blod clot formed in a vein but now on the move, occluding a cardiac artery, I think. Cardiac arrest, the heart stopping, is a shocking thing to happen to a young athlete. If this has happened despite surgery, as reported, then this poor lad should not be allowed to play again. His life is more important than football. Everything else you wrote I agree absolutely. Superb response, and heroic lifesaving. Edit: actually I wonder whether he is playing with implanted internal defibrilation fitted. The report suggests he regained cardiac output and breathing, and was even responsive, very quickly.

He’s the perfect role model in the way he’s conducted himself in pursuing his career and fulfilling his dream of playing regularly for Wales. It would be a travesty for him to have to call it a day now when the best time of his life is beckoning. Get well soon, Tom.

Tom out of hospital www.theguardian.com/football/2023/dec/21/luton-tom-lockyer-discharged-from-hospital-cardiac-arrestThe Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer is recovering at home having been discharged from hospital on Wednesday after suffering a cardiac arrest in the match against Bournemouth. Lockyer collapsed on the pitch at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday and was treated by medical staff before being taken to hospital. The match was eventually abandoned after a lengthy delay and will be replayed in due course. While in hospital Lockyer had an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator fitted, a device that is designed to shock the heart should a person enter cardiac arrest. “We are thankful to report that our captain Tom Lockyer has now begun a period of rehabilitation from the comfort of his own home after he was discharged from hospital on Wednesday,” Luton said in a statement. Play was halted in the 65th minute on Saturday as Lockyer was given medical assistance. The Luton manager Rob Edwards entered the field of play immediately to ensure the players gave medical personnel the space required to work on Lockyer. Once he was taken off the pitch on a stretcher, it was decided that the two sets of players should not continue the match. “The club, Tom and the Lockyer family would like to take this opportunity to repeat our collective heartfelt thanks to all at Bournemouth, their supporters, club officials and especially their medical staff and midfielder Philip Billing, who was the first to reach Tom on the pitch and summon assistance.” Lockyer previously collapsed during the Championship playoff final in May but tests this week showed his cardiac arrest was unrelated. Following that incident at Wembley he spent five days in hospital and had surgery to treat an atrial fibrillation, a condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate, but was allowed to return for pre-season. “The clinical advice Tom and the club has taken since the Championship playoff final has been conducted by the most renowned cardiologists, who have been involved at every step, along with a team of supporting multi-disciplinary consultants,” Luton said. “We can now confirm that the tests taken this week had revealed that the issue Tom experienced on Saturday was different to the atrial fibrillation he suffered in May.”

..... liking the new avatar, darlo..... Thanks. My next one will be... A brilliant picture Darlo. I had the privilege of walking a few laps on Weston Super Mare Pier with Punky the summer before last for charity and the memories came flooding back. Preffered him without the pony tail though. Wishing Matt Lockyer all the best for the future.

Seemed to have lost a half yard in pace whilst at Stoke but his finishing was still excellent. We definitely had him at his peak. Love the fact too that he retains an affection for the club and gasheads. Definitely a legend in my eyes
