We are largely an over weight nation.Foods with a small amount of sugar, to loads of sugar dominate our shops.
Most of us were probably addicted to sugar by time we were about 3 years old.
Maybe this thread can be a place where those that want to lose weight,or those that are losing weight or those that are at a weight they're happy with and want stay there.

I agree about the sugar problem,I was amazed to find out that it was in bread... Also seeing 'low fat' on an item in a shop makes it sound healthy but sometimes that can have high sugar content.
I dont know if this is correct but I was told that as you get older it is more difficult for the body to deal with sugar.
When I was younger high sugar content items were favoured for energy, if you were going hiking etc.
Interesting thread and tbh when I go to football I see some very large blokes (and women) it wasnt always so,I dont think that I heard the word obese until the late 80s or early 90s,there was one 'fat' lady in my street when I was a kid,she would probably be classed as anorexic now. A few years back radio 5 had a report about some West Brom fans travelling to Crystal Palace, what they ate, drank and smoked that day was incredible, people never used to go to a match and eat and drink,I think that the old caravan at the back of the Open end at Eastville sold cups of tea,Bovril and maybe Kit Kats, now a high percentage of people seem to buy a pastie, pie or burger.

Yeh,plenty of sugar in bread Trymer, some more than others.Abit of fat won't hurt us but it's sugar that does the damage. Those that can enjoy food that has sugar in in moderation and exercise (walk abit is probably enough), have it beaten, but for many it's a struggle.

Not weight related but I heard an interview last year on radio 4 about people suffering after going to Turkey to have cosmetic dental treatment, coming home and reporting to dental hospitals with pain and various problems, sounded gruesome.

Exercise for people of 50 and over is an interesting subject, walking is good but I have found Pilates really beneficial and I do 30/40 minutes mobility, stretching and a bit of strength exercises every morning before work....core strength is important.

Apparently the Government have asked Watchdog group Nice to check out the possible benefit of giving obese children (under 18) appetite suppression pills.
Sounds dangerous to me. I can't see it happening or working if going ahead.

Not tackling the cause of the problem which is taking in more calories than are burnt off, too many sugary drinks and junk food and not enough exercise. I know a few blokes (pi$$heads) who have Diabetes, they have been told to cut their drinking down, exercise more and eat healthier but they inject themselves and carry on as 'normal', seems like a similar idea with giving obese children appetite suppression pills. Maybe its the parents of the obese children that need to be taken to task ? they are (or should be ) responsible for their childrens welfare/health.

Stand to be corrected but the sugar content is there to activate the Yeast in order for the bread to rise..not just in there " for the sake of"

The discipline to eat less is not an easy one.At least for millions of us. You can make sugar less bread I'm sure. I think that sandwich ,rolls etc business was checked out (not Greggs, another). They had so much sugar in their 'bread',it could'nt really be considered normal bread. Maybe nearer cake!Addictive stuff and don't they know it!£!

Was it Subway that had cake levels of sugar in their bread ? the sugar is there for various reasons but as you say it all adds up,a personal trainer told me to buy the brownest bread I could find and to only eat one slice a day.....that makes a loaf last a fortnight and the last few slices are getting mouldy. You mentioned Greggs,my observation travelling to various places with Rovers is that the more Greggs in an area the more of a dump that area is.

Yeh,think it was Subway Trymer.A Personal Trainer.Did it help with losing weight and motivation? The gym that I use had an offer of a free hour with a PT,I was starting Pilates and one of the PTs was a Pilates instructor so it was very useful for me. Although I was a long time gym user he showed me how to use some of the equipment properly and introduced me to equipment and exercises that I had never used before. He wasnt a dietician but he knew a fair bit about diet,so yes I did lose some weight through his advice and a workout with him was better for me than a workout on my own because he pushed me. Now though I mainly do classes, two or three Pilates classes a week and a couple of Abs blast classes, sometimes Bodypump...if its just Pilates I do my own workout first. I think that a mixture of Pilates and calisthenics exercises are good for all ages, can be done in a limited space with no equipment or if you want to buy a few cheaper bits and pieces to vary your workout. I get motivated by going to the gym, lockdown was much harder,i did keep it up but it was much more effort.

The NHS has in recent times had to purchase bariatric ambulances which are designed to take people over 50 stone in weight. People over 30 stone are becoming more regular. On occasions my wife and her colleagues who work frontline ambulance have had to call out the Fire Service to remove windows and hoist people out. That's not good for anyone.
