Man City launch legal action over financial rules..by Simon Stone, BBC Sport chief football reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/751/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/5/dfc99e3e-cdcb-45cb-9983-34a24c4040a1.jpgManchester City are due to face the Premier League in a legal battle over the organisation’s commercial rules next week. BBC Sport understands an arbitration hearing surrounding the legality of the league’s associated party transaction (APT) rules, which determine whether sponsorship deals are financially ‘fair’, has been set for 10th-21st June. In February, BBC Sport reported the Premier League was being threatened with legal action over changes to its rules. It has been disclosed to the remaining Premier League clubs that City are the club in question, with the league offering the remaining 19 members the opportunity to make witness statements as part of the case. Neither the Premier League nor Manchester City have responded to requests for a comment on the case. However, The Times,, external says it has seen a 165-page legal document in which City claim they are victims of "discrimination", that the amended rules were approved by rivals to "stifle" their success on the pitch, and call it "a tyranny of the majority". Orient plan permanent memorial for Justin Edinburgh..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article16462236.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_Leyton-Orient-v-Braintree-Town-Vanarama-National-League.jpgLeyton Orient have announced plans to create a permanent memorial for Justin Edinburgh at Brisbane Road. Edinburgh, who had just guided the O's back in to the English Football League, passed away in 2019, aged 49, five days after suffering a cardiac arrest. The club have kept the tributes laid in Edinburgh's memory and will create a 'collage-like memorial' from those that are still in good condition. “As a club, we will always be indebted to the work that Justin did here," Leyton Orient director of football Martin Ling told the club website on the fifth anniversary of Edinburgh's death. "He took us on the first step from the National League back to League One and we will never forget that. “When he passed away it was an awful time for everyone here, but the unity of all of our supporters showed what a special club we are. "It’s fantastic that the club will be turning the tributes into a permanent memorial to honour Justin and I am looking forward to seeing it.” i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/07/16/15/16105580-7251951-Tributes_to_Edinburgh_were_laid_outside_Leyton_Orient_s_stadium_-a-5_1563286138804.jpgAs a player Edinburgh won the 1991 FA Cup and 1999 League Cup with Tottenham Hotspur and as a manager had spells at Northampton Town, Gillingham and Newport County before moving to Orient in November 2017. He led Newport and Orient to promotion from the National League and also guided both sides to FA Trophy finals. In his memory the JE3 Foundation was set up which campaigns on legislative change on the installation of automated external defibrillators within health and sports facilities. The foundations also raises awareness of cardiac arrest and delivering CPR training. “This is an incredible and moving gesture by the club for our family," said Justin’s son Charlie Edinburgh, who is the founder and chief executive of the JE3 Foundation. "Back in 2019, the thousands of tributes that were laid and sent our way in memory of dad were so heartfelt and moving. “The fact that the club are going to produce a wall of remembrance with those tributes, we feel it is a fantastic way to mark, not just the five-year anniversary, but also the man himself."

Liverpool and Scotland great Alan Hansen 'seriously ill'..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/09/17/85900767-13510469-image-a-1_1717950553814.jpgThe Anfield club announced on Sunday their "legendary" former captain is in hospital. "The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital," a statement read. Hansen won promotion to the Scottish Premier Division with Partick Thistle before joining Liverpool in 1977 for the start of a successful 14-year spell. He was a key part of the great Reds teams of the 1970s and 1980s, winning eight First Division titles, three European Cups and two FA Cups. Liverpool added they are "currently in contact with Alan's family to provide our support at this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family". Hansen, who also won four League Cups with Liverpool, appeared 26 times for his country and was a member of Scotland's 1982 World Cup side. Former team-mate John Aldridge, chairman of the former players' association Forever Reds, said on X: "All our thoughts as ex-LFC players are with Alan (]ocky) Hansen and his family. Let's hope he can pull through his illness. YNWA." After retiring in 1991, he appeared as a pundit on Match of the Day from 1992 until 2014. Hansen's former Match of the Day colleague Gary Lineker wrote on X: "Horrendous news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/09/10/85893301-13510469-image-m-9_1717926987193.jpgHe earned a reputation as one of the most insightful and influential pundits in the country while working alongside figures such as Des Lynam, Lineker, Mark Lawrenson, Alan Shearer and Sir Trevor Brooking. Hansen's most memorable moment on the Premier League highlights programme came in 1995 when he famously responded to a Manchester United defeat at Aston Villa by insisting: "You can't win anything with kids." That team - which included Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and David Beckham - won the FA Cup and Premier League Double that season. Hansen was also part of BBC Sport's coverage of major football tournaments. In all he covered 16 FA Cup finals, six World Cups, five European Championships and one Olympics during his spell with the BBC. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/09/16/85899631-13510469-image-a-18_1717946947401.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/09/16/85899621-13510469-image-m-21_1717948425545.jpg

Ex-Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare has died aged 60..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/01/20/88054019-13699529-image-m-14_1722538995653.jpgFormer Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare has died at the age of 60, his family has announced. Shakespeare was undergoing treatment for cancer back in October 2023. As well as managing Leicester, he also worked for West Brom, Hull, Everton, Watford, Aston Villa and Norwich and had a spell as England assistant boss in 2016. A statement released on behalf of his family via the League Managers' Association said Shakespeare "passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family". It added: "While the family are immensely proud of his footballing achievements as both a player and a coach, to us, his family, he will always primarily be a loving and loved husband, father, son, brother and uncle. "The loss is devastating to us all and we would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly difficult time as we try to come to terms with, and mourn, the loss of a very special person. "The family would like to thank and acknowledge the many prayers and good wishes sent during the past few difficult months, many of which we were unable to respond to but all meant a lot to Craig and the family." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/01/20/88054017-13699529-image-a-15_1722539052127.jpgFormer Leicester boss Nigel Pearson, who worked with Shakespeare at five different clubs, said: "It's difficult to put into words how I, and indeed everyone who came across or worked with Craig, will feel on hearing such devastating news. "He is without hesitation one of the most wonderfully talented, emotionally understanding, calm, balanced and outrageously funny people I've had the privilege of calling my friend. Safe journey to the next destination my wonderful friend. "You are loved and admired by us all, and every time we think of you, a smile, smirk, chuckle or memorable occasion will come to us. We truly are the lucky ones for having known 'Shakey'."

BBC sacks Jermaine Jenas after complaints..by Noor Nanji, Culture reporter.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/22/15/88817287-13769323-image-a-20_1724336438714.jpg The One Show host, pictured with wife Ellie Penfold at Wimbledon this year, has been accused for inappropriate behavior Jermaine Jenas, who presents The One Show and appears on Match of the Day for the BBC, has been sacked by the corporation following complaints about workplace conduct. The former footballer, 41, has been taken off air from both primetime shows. BBC News understands his contract was terminated earlier this week, because of alleged issues relating to workplace behaviour. It followed allegations involving digital communications such as texts, which were raised with the corporation a few weeks ago. A BBC spokesperson said: "We can confirm Jermaine Jenas is no longer part of our presenting line-up." He was last on air earlier in the summer. Jenas earned £190,000 - £194,999 at the BBC for his work on the FA Cup, Match of the Day and the World Cup. His work on The One Show was for BBC Studios, the BBC's commercial production company, so his salary is not in the public domain. He also works for talkSport, where he is currently presenting a show on air, and is also employed by TNT Sports, a group of pay television sports channels. However his profile has been removed from his agent's website. Jenas made his footballing debut at the age of 17, and played for his boyhood team Nottingham Forest, Spurs and Newcastle United. He went on to play 341 times, as well as making 21 appearances for England. He retired in 2016 aged 32, although he had not played since 2014. Jenas turned his attention to media work as a pundit while recovering from a knee injury and became a regular on Match of the Day, as well as BT Sport. He had been presenting The One Show since 2020. He and a friend set up the Aquinas Foundation to help incentivise and raise the aspirations of young people in schools across Nottingham. The ex-footballer also appeared on The Great Sport Relief Bake-Off in 2016. In December 2023 it was announced that he would collect an honorary degree from Nottingham Trent University.

World Cup legend Salvatore 'Toto' Schillaci dies, aged 59, after suffering with colon cancer..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/18/10/89814261-13863753-image-a-17_1726650357774.jpgItalian icon Salvatore Schillaci, the top scorer at the 1990 World Cup, has died aged 59. Schillaci, better known as 'Toto', scored six goals to win the Golden Boot at the 1990 World Cup on home soil. Italy lost in the semi-finals, but Schillaci was also awarded the Golden Ball as the best player and gained hero status. Capped 16 times for his country, scoring seven goals, he represented Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan after beginning his club career at Messina. Schillaci scored his first goal of the 1990 World Cup as a substitute against Austria, and after another substitute appearance against the United States earned his first start against the Czech Republic. Partnering Baggio up front, Schillaci scored again as Italy's campaign built momentum. His hero status was confirmed with further strikes in the subsequent knockout round matches against Uruguay and the Republic of Ireland in the quarter-finals. Despite opening the scoring in the semi-final against Argentina, Italy lost out on penalties in Naples - but Schillaci sealed the Golden Boot with his sixth goal of the tournament in the third-place play-off against England. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/18/10/89814263-13863753-image-a-18_1726650372275.jpg

Meslier 'heartbroken' after howler costs Leeds victory v Sunderland in the 97th minute..by Adam Lanigan, BBC Sport Englandi2-prod.examinerlive.co.uk/incoming/article30076573.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_Sunderland-v-Leeds-United-Sky-Bet-Championship-Stadium-of-Light.jpgLeeds United head coach Daniel Farke said Illan Meslier was "in tears" after the goalkeeper's glaring mistake cost his side victory at Sunderland. In the 97th minute of Friday's match, with the minimum six minutes of added time already up, the Frenchman allowed Alan Browne's hopeful ball into the box to squirm past him and gift the Black Cats a 2-2 draw. A win would have taken Leeds level on points with leaders Sunderland at the top of the Championship, but instead they remain three points behind in third. "After such a situation, you don't need to talk to Illan, he is the saddest person in the dressing room, he's more or less in tears," said Farke. A dodgy bounce?Farke admitted he had never experienced such an incident in his 30 years in football, with such a defining mistake coming with effectively the last touch of the match. The Leeds boss suggested captain Pascal Struijk had seen the ball bounce unkindly in front of his goalkeeper, causing Meslier to let it spin past him. But Farke could not definitively say if there was a rogue divot on the pitch which had cost his injury-hit side two crucial points at the Stadium of Light after an impressive display. "After such a situation, you don't need to speak about it - no-one wants to hear any words," he added. "Pascal came over and said he had never seen anything like this. He said it bounced and jumped in the other direction because there was a mark on the pitch. "I can't tell you if that was the case because I wasn't on the pitch, but Pascal was probably in the best position to see. If it was this, it was unbelievably unlucky. "To lose those points in this way is heartbreaking, is horrendous, is so sad and disappointing for our lads." Meslier used to play at the Lorient academy in his native France under the tutelage of Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris. Le Bris spoke with his former keeper on the pitch after the game and had sympathy for his compatriot. "I'm disappointed for him because I like this boy and anyone can make a mistake," said the Sunderland boss. "For a goalkeeper, when you make a mistake, the consequences are very important. It happened today and we are happy for the final result." Sunderland vs Leeds: Illan Meslier's extraordinary howler costs Leeds late onwww.skysports.com/football/video/30998/13228072/what-has-he-done-illan-mesliers-extraordinary-howler-costs-leeds-late-on

Former Sheff Utd and MK Dons defender George Baldock has died aged 31..by Luke Poweri.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/09/21/90664713-13943117-image-m-19_1728506413509.jpgFormer Sheffield United star George Baldock has been found dead in a swimming pool at his home in Greece. The defender, 31, was discovered after his wife back in England had been unable to get hold of him for several hours, local newspaper I Avgi reports. Fellow Premier League players including Harry Maguire have led tributes to the tragic footballer - with the former Manchester United captain simply posting 'RIP', alongside a broken heart emoji. Baldock joined Panathinaikos in the summer after spending seven seasons with the Blades in the Premier League and Championship. Despite being born in Buckinghmshire, he played for Greece 12 times due to his grandfather, after starting his career at MK Dons and playing in all of England's top five divisions. Baldock's wife reportedly tried to contact him and after several hours without a response, got in touch with the owner of the villa in which he lived in Glyfada, a suburb south of Athens. After searching the suburban property, they found Baldock in the pool and called the emergency services. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/09/22/90666303-13943117-image-a-42_1728508808278.jpg

Referee David Coote suspended amid Liverpool and Klopp video inquiry..by Sean Kearns, BBC Sportichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/9fa0/live/ef8e0310-a064-11ef-bdf5-b7cb2fa86e10.jpgPremier League referee David Coote has been suspended after a video allegedly showing him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and the club's former manager Jurgen Klopp was circulated on social media. Refereeing body PGMOL says the suspension comes into force with immediate effect and is pending a full investigation. The video, widely shared on social media, has not been verified by the BBC. It is unclear when it was filmed or its authenticity. A source told the BBC that PGMOL's inquiry is treating the video as genuine. Coote, 42, refereed Liverpool's 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday. He is one of the Premier League’s most-experienced officials and has been refereeing matches in the top flight since 2018. The video being shared appears to refer to a Premier League match that Coote officiated between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which finished 1-1. Klopp criticised Coote after the match, saying the referee failed to give fouls for challenges made on Liverpool's players. In the video the man alleged to be Coote says Klopp had "a right pop at me when I reffed them against Burnley in lockdown". He calls Klopp arrogant and also swears several times when referring to him. The video shows him with another man and lasts for just over a minute. The circumstances of how the video emerged are unclear. PGMOL says it will not be making further comment on the case until its investigation is completed. BBC Sport has been told Liverpool are aware of the video but not commenting at this stage. Speaking to BBC Sport on Monday, English Football League chairman Rick Parry said: "PGMOL is dealing with it - they have suspended him - they've acted quickly and they will make sure they deal with it thoroughly and professionally." Referees are required to inform PGMOL of the club they support. Coote, from Nottingham, is registered as a Notts County fan and is therefore unable to officiate County or Nottingham Forest matches. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/11/11/21/91952381-0-image-a-2_1731360759051.jpgWith their first Premier League title secured, Liverpool's aims in July 2020 had switched to becoming the first club to win every single home game during the course of the season. The Reds were on a 24-match winning run at Anfield, which had given them a 25-point lead over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. In addition, Klopp's side were hoping to become the second team to amass 100 points during a 38-game Premier League season, matching Manchester City's achievement in the 2017-18 campaign. Andrew Robertson gave Liverpool the lead against the Clarets before Jay Rodriguez equalised to give the visitors a share of the spoils. At full-time, Klopp appeared to argue with Coote and his officials on the pitch. "The referee let lots of challenges go so it was clear that if the ball comes into the box it was dangerous. They [Burnley] did what they are good at and I respect that," said Klopp after the match. "We were angry with the referee but we have to criticise ourselves first for not finishing the game." Liverpool lost their next fixture against Arsenal, which ended their hopes of reaching 100 points.

Coote is suspended from his role pending an investigation into a video which emerged earlier this week, in which the 42-year-old appeared to make disparaging remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. On Wednesday the Sun newspaper published pictures it says were taken during this summer's European Championship, alleging they appear to show Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled up US bank note. Coote was working at the Euros in his capacity as a match official. A PGMOL spokesperson said: "We are aware of the allegations and are taking them very seriously. "David Coote remains suspended pending a full investigation. "David's welfare continues to be of utmost importance to us and we are committed to providing him with the ongoing necessary support he needs through this period. We are not in a position to comment further at this stage." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/11/13/21/92043207-14079275-image-a-23_1731532087824.jpg A video has emerged of suspended Premier League referee David Coote allegedly snorting white powder in a hotel roomThe Sun says images of Coote were sent to a friend on more than one occasion during the tournament. The BBC has not independently verified the pictures or the video. The BBC has approached Coote for comment. Meanwhile European football’s governing body Uefa has confirmed to BBC Sport that the official has been suspended following the appearance of the original video. Uefa said on Tuesday that Coote had been withdrawn from an international commitment this week and on Wednesday a spokesperson added: "The Uefa Referees Committee immediately suspended David Coote until further notice on 11th November - in advance of the upcoming round of Uefa matches - when it became aware of his inappropriate behaviour."
