World Cup 2022: Awarding Qatar the tournament was a mistake, says former Fifa president Sepp Blatter..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/181C3/production/_127555789_gettyimages-1241770495.jpgFormer Fifa president Sepp Blatter says the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar was a "mistake". Blatter, 86, was president of world football's governing body when Qatar was awarded the tournament in 2010. The Gulf state has been criticised for its stance on same-sex relationships, human rights record and treatment of migrant workers. Blatter said he was "right" to have said at the time that the tournament "should not go" to Qatar for 2022. The Swiss was speaking on upcoming BBC Radio 5 Live podcast series Power Play - The House of Sepp Blatter about the decision to award Qatar the World Cup. World Cup 2022: England arrive in Qatar ready for 'pinnacle of world football'.England arrived in Qatar on Tuesday night ahead of the Fifa World Cup, which begins on Sunday. Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad left Birmingham earlier in the day and will spend the next few days at their training camp near Doha before their opening game of the tournament. England face Iran in Group B on Monday, 21 November (13:00 GMT) before games against the United States and Wales. "Excitement is building among everyone," said captain Harry Kane. "We're happy to be here and looking forward to being out on the training pitch." Southgate added: "For every player and every manager it's the pinnacle of world football so we're really looking forward to testing ourselves on that stage." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17FE2/production/_127647289_englandplayers.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/725A/production/_127647292_englandfans.jpgEngland supporters waited outside England's team hotel in Qatar to greet the players on their arrivalEngland are looking to go at least one better than their performance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where they reached the semi-finals and were beaten 2-1 by Croatia in extra time. "We're trying not to think that far ahead but of course that's the dream and what we're aiming to do," Kane added. "It's going to be a tough tournament, we have to prepare for that but really excited to get going." A crowd of supporters had gathered to wave off Southgate's squad as they left St George's Park for their flight to Qatar. The night before their departure, Prince William presented the players with their shirt numbers for the tournament and also provided some words of encouragement. "I'm really here to point out that the rest of the country is behind you," he said. "We are all rooting for you, enjoy it." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C07A/production/_127647294_worldcup.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10E9A/production/_127647296_england.jpgPrince William presented the England players with their shirt numbers the night before their departureichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15CBA/production/_127647298_england.jpgThe England squad posed in smart attire for their group photo before leaving for Qatar

There was a lot of talk about Gareth Southgate not picking Ivan Toney, i wonder why that was...
Ivan Toney: Brentford striker charged by FA with 232 breaches of betting rules..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1513/production/_127659350_toneybody_getty-1.jpgBrentford striker Ivan Toney has been charged by the Football Association with 232 alleged breaches of betting rules. The alleged breaches took place between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021. Toney, 26, has scored 10 Premier League goals this season but missed out on a place in the England World Cup squad. Brentford said in a statement: "The club has been in discussion with Ivan and his legal representatives. Those conversations will continue privately." The statement continued: "We will make no further comment until the matter has been completed." Toney has until 24 November to respond to the FA misconduct charges, which involve alleged breaches of FA rule E8, which bans players from betting on games, or sharing privileged information for the purposes of betting. He faces a lengthy ban if they are proven. England defender Kieran Trippier was banned for 10 weeks by the FA in December 2020 for giving out information for others to bet on his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid. In 2017 manager Joey Barton was banned for five months after he admitted placing 1,260 football-related bets over a 10-year period. Toney said earlier this month, after the allegations were first reported, that he was "assisting the Football Association with their enquiries". During the time stated in the FA charge, Toney represented four different clubs - Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Brentford. He was on the books at Newcastle United from 2015-2018 but spent the majority of that time out on loan. The Northampton-born player had two spells at Scunthorpe, playing for them in the 2016-17 season and again from January to May 2018, either side of six months on loan at Wigan. Toney signed for Peterborough in August 2018, before making a £5m move to Brentford in September 2020. The forward, who began his career at Northampton, has scored 58 goals in 105 appearances for Brentford, including two in a shock 2-1 win at defending Premier League champions Manchester City in the final game before the World Cup break. Only England captain Harry Kane (12) and City forward Erling Haaland (18) have scored more goals in the Premier League this season. Toney received his first England call-up for September's Nations League games against Italy and Germany but did not get on the pitch in either.

On Tuesday, Senegal's football federation said Mane, 30, would miss their "first games" at the tournament. But a further MRI scan was completed on Thursday that showed surgical intervention was needed. Mane was forced off during Bayern's Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen on 8 November. Bayern have confirmed the player "underwent successful surgery" on Thursday, to attach a tendon to the head of his right fibula "The forward will begin his rehab in Munich in the next few days," the club added. Senegal start their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on Monday. The West Africans are in Group A with games against hosts Qatar (25 November) and Ecuador (29 November) to follow. Two-time African Footballer of the Year Mane is Senegal's talisman, having scored the winning penalty when the Teranga Lions became continental champions for the first time in February, defeating Egypt in a shootout in the Africa Cup of Nations final. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/240/cpsprodpb/16AFF/production/_127672929_63670978.jpg

World Cup 2022: Alcohol sales banned at World Cup stadiums in Qatar..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BAB5/production/_127679774_gettyimages-1442455849.jpgThe Lusail Stadium in Doha is one of eight stadiums where no alcohol will be sold during the World Cup
Alcohol will not be sold to fans at the World Cup's eight stadiums in Qatar after Fifa changed its policy two days before the start of the tournament. Alcohol was set to be served "in select areas within stadiums", despite its sale being strictly controlled in the Muslim country. Those in corporate areas of stadiums at the tournament will still be able to purchase alcohol. The World Cup starts on Sunday when Qatar play Ecuador. Budweiser, a major sponsor of Fifa, is owned by beer maker AB InBev and had exclusive rights to sell beer at the World Cup. "Following discussions between host country authorities and Fifa, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the Fifa fan festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar's Fifa World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters," said a statement from world football's governing body. "There is no impact to the sale of Bud Zero which will remain available at all Qatar's World Cup stadiums. "Host country authorities and Fifa will continue to ensure that the stadiums and surrounding areas provide an enjoyable, respectful and pleasant experience for all fans. "The tournament organisers appreciate AB InBev's understanding and continuous support to our joint commitment to cater for everyone during the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022." Budweiser posted a message on Twitter on Friday saying, "Well, this is awkward" before the post was later deleted. An AB InBev spokesperson said that they could not proceed with "some of the planned stadium activations" because of "circumstances beyond our control". The Football Supporters' Association (FSA) criticised the timing of the decision to ban the sale of beer for most fans. "Some fans like a beer at a game and some don't, but the real issue is the last minute U-turn which speaks to a wider problem - the total lack of communication and clarity from the organising committee towards supporters," said an FSA spokesperson. "If they can change their minds on this at a moment's notice, with no explanation, supporters will have understandable concerns about whether they will fulfil other promises relating to accommodation, transport or cultural issues." England fan Ryan, an Arsenal supporter who is in Qatar for the World Cup, echoed concerns over the late change. He told BBC Sport: "It's not ideal but as far as I understand there'll be other places to drink. Football is football and part of the culture is having a drink with your mates, but there's no point crying about it. "They had 12 years to organise it and I don't think it bodes well to have so many last-minute changes. As fans we have to get on with it." In August, Fifa changed the start date of the World Cup so that the first game of the competition would be Qatar facing Ecuador. The game was scheduled to be played on 21 November as the third game, with Senegal against the Netherlands set to be the opening match earlier that day.

Infantino: "Today I have strong feelings. Today I feel Qatari, I feel Arab, I feel African, I feel gay, I feel disabled, I feel a migrant worker." Perhaps he also feels immensely proud to be taking huge 'incentives' to promote this backward country that openly discriminates against women, the LGBT+ community and migrant workers.

Karim Benzema: France striker out of World Cup 2022 with thigh injury..
France striker Karim Benzema is out of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after he sustained a thigh injury in training.
Benzema won the 2022 Ballon d'Or, given to the player of the year in world football, after helping Real Madrid win the Champions League and La Liga.
The French national team said he had suffered a thigh problem and would not be able to feature in tournament.
"The whole team shares Karim's sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery," it added.
The French Football Federation said an MRI scan confirmed a thigh muscle injury "which will require a three-week recovery period".
France are in Group D and play Australia on 22 November, Denmark on 26 November and Tunisia on 30 November.
Head coach Didier Deschamps has until Monday to name a replacement and the injury to 34-year-old Benzema, who has scored 37 times in 97 matches for France, is another blow for the World Cup holders.
They are already without midfielders Paul Pogba and N'Golo Kante because of injury while Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is trying to be fit to play having missed his past five club matches.

The 1st game to kick off the 2022 World Cup is on Sunday 20th November..(for those that are interested of course)
Qatar v Ecuador - Now 4pm - Referee: Daniele Orsato.
Qatar head coach Felix Sanchez must choose between goalkeepers Saad Al Sheeb and Meshaal Barsham, both of whom have featured regularly in friendly games this year.
Almoez Ali, who scored nine times as the Qataris won the Asian Cup in 2019, is likely to lead the line alongside Akram Afif.
Ecuador also have competition for places in goal but will probably select Alexander Dominguez, who has gone 459 minutes without conceding an international goal.
Winger Romario Ibarra is expected to be available despite dislocating a finger in a friendly against Iraq. Defensive midfielder Carlos Gruezo was forced off playing for Augsburg last weekend because of muscle pain but is nonetheless set to start.

Group B - England 6 (Bellingham 35, Saka 43, 62, Sterling 45+1, Rashford 71, Grealish 90) Iran 2 - Taremi 65, 90+13) - Stoppage Time 1st half 14, 2nd half 13 = 27 minutes. England's Fifa World Cup campaign opened in thoroughly convincing fashion as they outclassed Iran in an incident-packed match in Doha. Gareth Southgate's side strolled to victory, with Iran's hopeless plight made worse by the early loss of goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to concussion after a clash of heads with team-mate Majid Hosseini. Jude Bellingham got England off the mark in this World Cup with a soaring header from Luke Shaw's cross 10 minutes before the break and the game was wrapped up before half-time thanks to Bukayo Saka's fine strike and Raheem Sterling's classy volley with the outside of his foot from Harry Kane's cross. Saka got his second before Iran's supporters were given a moment of real delight when Mehdi Taremi scored a fine goal after 65 minutes - but England substitute Marcus Rashford then netted another smooth, composed strike with his first involvement. To put the gloss on an incredibly dominant display, Jack Grealish slotted home from close range after a good run and pull back by Callum Wilson. Iran did pull another back in injury time when Taremi slotted in a penalty after a John Stones foul. The game was played out against the backdrop of more off-field controversy here in Qatar after England were forced to ditch plans to wear the OneLove armband promoting diversity and inclusivity under threat from Fifa of players being cautioned should they carry out the gesture of support. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/A675/production/_127731624_microsoftteams-image-15.png
