Reece James: Chelsea captain has surgery on hamstring injury..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10CB7/production/_132119786_gettyimages-1237458550.jpg Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino named Reece James as club captain in his first season in chargeChelsea captain Reece James has had surgery in an attempt to fix a recurring hamstring injury. James was substituted after 26 minutes due to injury in the 3-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park two weeks ago. It was the first time he had started a game for Chelsea since 25 November after a previous hamstring injury had ruled him out for eight matches. The 24-year-old said he had experienced "significantly more hate and negativity" since his latest injury. Neither James or Chelsea have said how long he is expected to be sidelined for. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/E5A7/production/_132119785_gettyimages-1837631546.jpg"The footballing world knew I got injured but the procedure I would go down this time took slightly longer to figure out the best solution," James posted on Instagram on Thursday. "I had surgery today to try fix my reoccurring hamstring issue, the recovery has started, both physically and mentally." James suffered his previous hamstring injury during the Blues' draw with Liverpool on the opening weekend of the season in August and he did not play again until October. The defenders' struggles with injuries have been well documented over the past two seasons and since the start of the 2022-23 campaign he has only featured in 24 Premier League games. He also missed the World Cup in Qatar last year due to knee ligament damage. "Since this injury I've had a good amount of support but significantly more hate and negativity. Believe me I don't wanna be injured, I'm happiest when I'm playing football," James added. "Thanks to the understanding people that support me despite the highs or the lows, it goes a long way. Stay well, Reece."

Mario Zagallo: Brazil's four-time World Cup winner dies aged 92..By Jack Skelton, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8E8B/production/_132219463_gettyimages-171995678.jpg Mario Zagallo is the only man to have been part of four World Cup-winning teamsBrazilian football legend Mario Zagallo, who won four World Cups as a player and coach, has died aged 92. Zagallo was a winger in the Brazil team who won back-to-back World Cups in 1958 and 1962, starting in both finals. He managed the side widely regarded as the greatest international team of all time, including Pele, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto, to glory in 1970. Zagallo's final World Cup triumph came as Carlos Alberto Parreira's assistant coach in 1994. He returned as Brazil manager after that tournament and led them to the final in 1998, where they were beaten by hosts France. Zagallo was the first person to win the World Cup as both a player and a manager - a feat that has since been matched by Germany's Franz Beckenbauer and France's Didier Deschamps. "With enormous sadness, we inform you of the death of our eternal four-time world champion Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo," a statement on his official Instagram account said. "A devoted father, loving grandfather, caring father-in-law, faithful friend, victorious professional and a great human being. Giant idol. A patriot who leaves us a legacy of great achievements." Key figure in Brazil's decorated historyBrazil are the most successful nation in World Cups, with five titles, and Zagallo is one of the most instrumental figures in that history. As a teenager on national service he was one of nearly 200,000 in the Maracana Stadium who saw hosts Brazil stunned by Uruguay in the decisive final match of the 1950 World Cup. Speaking to BBC Sport in 2013, Zagallo said: "That day has never left my mind." He made his Brazil debut aged 26 shortly before the 1958 tournament but became a key part of the team that alleviated some of that pain from 1950, as a 17-year-old Pele inspired the Selecao to victory over Sweden in the final, with Zagallo scoring the fourth goal in a 5-2 win. Zagallo had been the last surviving member of Brazil's 1958 World Cup-winning team who played in the final. With Pele injured in the early stages of the 1962 World Cup, Zagallo again played a crucial role, tracking back to help in defence during an era where it was unusual for forwards to do so, as Brazil beat Czechoslovakia in the final. Zagallo, who played domestically for America, Flamengo and Botafogo, retired in 1965, having won 33 caps for his country. He started his managerial career at Botafogo before he replaced Joao Saldanha as Brazil boss aged 38 shortly before the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. The tactically astute Zagallo, nicknamed 'The Professor' and 'Old Wolf', pulled together a side filled with the attacking talents of Pele, Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao and Rivellino and made them irresistible. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/406B/production/_132219461_gettyimages-1190269260.jpgBrazil won all six of their games and swept to a 4-1 victory over Italy in the final. Zagallo stayed on as Brazil coach for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, where they finished fourth. He subsequently managed Brazilian clubs and national teams including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, helping the latter qualify for their maiden World Cup in 1990, before returning as coordinator in Parreira's coaching set-up before the 1994 World Cup. Brazil would go on to win their fourth title and first since 1970 as they beat Italy on penalties in the final in the United States. Zagallo's side began the 1998 tournament as favourites but were beaten 3-0 in the final by France, with star striker Ronaldo having had a mysterious fit on the day of the game. Brazil won their fifth title in Japan and South Korea in 2002 under Luiz Felipe Scolari, with Zagallo attending the tournament as a special adviser. He returned as Parreira's assistant in 2006, where Brazil were knocked out by France in the quarter-finals and he subsequently retired. Zagallo's wife of 57 years, Alcina de Castro, died in 2012. They had four children. Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Ednaldo Rodrigues said: "The CBF and Brazilian football mourn the death of one of its legends. "The CBF offers solidarity to his family and fans in this moment of sadness at the departure of this idol of our football."

Marc Overmars: Fifa extends ex-Netherlands winger's ban to global game..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6366/production/_132264452_gettyimages-1239389475.jpg Overmars played for Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona during his playing careerEx-Netherlands winger Marc Overmars' suspension from holding a post in Dutch football has been extended to a global ban by world governing body Fifa. An independent Dutch sports tribunal banned Overmars for two years - with one year suspended - in November 2023. The punishment followed his sending a "series of inappropriate messages to several female colleagues" while he was director of football at Ajax. Overmars, 50, left his role at Ajax in February 2022. He is currently technical director at Belgian side Royal Antwerp. "Fifa can confirm that following a request by the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), the Fifa Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the sanction imposed by KNVB on Mr Marc Overmars to have worldwide effect," read a Fifa statement. Overmars made more than 130 appearances for Ajax between 1992 and 1997 and won three league titles, the Dutch cup and the Champions League before joining Arsenal, where he won the Double with the Gunners. He later joined Barcelona, and following retirement he spent 10 years as director of football affairs at Ajax. "I am ashamed," Overmars said in 2022 when he left Ajax because of his messages to female colleagues. "Certainly for someone in my position this behaviour is unacceptable. I now see that but it is too late. I see no other option but to leave Ajax."

The 22-year-old was hit on the back and went down as he was being substituted before throwing the bottle away. Mattia Zaccagni scored the only goal. Lazio's Pedro and Roma's Sardar Azmoun were dismissed in injury time, with Gianluca Mancini, also of Roma, sent off after the final whistle. Zaccagni's winner was from a penalty awarded by the video assistant referee for a foul by Dean Huijsen on Valentin Castellanos. Roma boss Jose Mourinho has lost four of his six derbies since taking charge in 2021. "It's always painful to lose, doubly so in the derby," he told Mediaset. "It's a modern football penalty, the sort that wouldn't have been given before VAR. The referee didn't give it when he was three metres away but with VAR he then gives it."

Sven-Goran Eriksson: Former England manager says he has cancer and 'best case a year' to live..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10FB/production/_132274340_gettyimages-1092821620.jpg Sven-Goran Eriksson led England to a 5-1 win over Germany in Munich during qualification for the 2002 World CupFormer England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson says he has "best case a year" to live after being diagnosed with cancer. The 75-year-old Swede was the first foreign coach to manage England and led the side to the quarter-finals of the 2002 and 2006 World Cup and 2004 Euros. "I'm going to resist for as long as I can," Eriksson told Swedish Radio P1. "I have an illness that's serious. Best case a year, I have worst case a lot less. It's impossible to say exactly, so it's better to not think about it." Eriksson, who had a 42-year career in management, stood down from his most recent role as sporting director at Swedish club Karlstad 11 months ago because of health issues. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/11/7c60a9f9-5e1f-413c-935f-c9c71676c3d8.jpgHe said he was trying to stay positive and "make something good" from his cancer diagnosis. "You try to trick the brain, it's too easy to succumb and become negative and get stuck at home. Better to try and see positives and not give in during hard times," he said. Eriksson began his managerial career with Degerfors in 1977 before joining fellow Swedish side Gothenburg, where he won the Swedish title, two Swedish cups and the 1981 Uefa Cup. He then went on to enjoy two spells with Portuguese giants Benfica as well as Italian sides Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio - where he won seven trophies including the Serie A title, two Italian Cups and the Uefa Cup Winners' Cup. Eriksson resigned from his post at Lazio in January 2001 to succeed Kevin Keegan as England manager. After a five year stint, it was announced in January 2006 that Eriksson was to leave his role following that summer's World Cup in Germany despite having two years left on his contract. No official reason was given for his departure at the time, though the Swede had come under pressure after being caught in a newspaper sting by a tabloid journalist. Eriksson went on to have a varied managerial career following his England departure, including spells with Manchester City and Leicester City, along with roles with national sides Mexico, Ivory Coast and the Philippines. His final club jobs were with Chinese Super League sides Guangzhou R&F, Shanghai SIPG and Shenzhen between 2013 and 2017, while his final managerial position was a 10-game spell as Philippines boss between October 2018 and January 2019. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/11/40a41561-b7a3-42e8-9619-9b5086423fb7.jpgTotal Managerial Stats: Games 1,207, W629, D308, L270 = 52.11 Win % - Clubs: England, Manchester City, Leicester City, Benfica, Roma, Lazio + 10 others...

Danny Macklin: Ex-AFC Wimbledon managing director banned for abusive and sexist comments..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14AD9/production/_132279648_b630cb52-b4b2-4b08-a7bf-7ff53d1deb56.jpg Danny Macklin left his position at AFC Wimbledon on 8th SeptemberFormer AFC Wimbledon managing director Danny Macklin has been banned from football for 14 weeks after admitting making abusive and sexist comments about a female colleague. Macklin, 42, used words that were "aggressive, violent and badly misogynistic", a Football Association hearing was told. He admitted the charge at a hearing last month. Macklin was banned until 25th March and must also complete an education course. The FA said the charge against Macklin, who has also held posts at Leyton Orient and Southend, constituted an "aggravated breach" of rules "as his language included a reference - whether express or implied - to gender". AFC Wimbledon said at the time that the club acted to "promptly resolve" the incident, with Macklin leaving his role at the League Two club on 8 September - before the allegations were made public. His comments were made in his office, in front of two colleagues of the victim - who was not named by the independent regulatory commission - and came to light as he had been covertly recorded. The recording was obtained by The Times, with Macklin telling the commission his mental health had "suffered greatly" since the article. He went missing on 1st December, prompting a police search before he was found in Looe, Cornwall, hundreds of miles from where he was last seen in Essex. The commission said there was "no excuse" for Macklin's comments but considered a fine "would not be appropriate" as he had already suffered financially from struggling to find another job. Macklin's secretly recorded comments came in response to an email the victim had sent him on 8 August 2023, expressing concerns about her workload and the impact it was having on her mental health. Two days later - prior to the recording being discovered - she was invited to a meeting with Wimbledon's HR department, where a settlement agreement was proposed which would have led to her leaving the club. Both the victim and Macklin were made aware of the recording on 12 August, with Macklin contacting her on her private email at 23:38 BST that evening - outlining that she could face "criminal prosecution" if she discussed or shared any "confidential, sensitive or personal information" with any "outside individual or organisation, including the media". Macklin apologised to the victim on 25th September, but only after The Times had published their article, so no mitigation for that was applied by the commission as there had been no apology when the recording was first discovered. He denied being sexist or misogynistic, pointing towards equality and diversity initiatives he had backed during his career, adding that he has been using his period of unemployment to further "learn and develop" in the area. Wimbledon issued a brief statement after the decision, saying the club "strives to be a responsible and inclusive community club at all times". "The behaviour highlighted in this enquiry will not be tolerated," it added.

SUNDAY 14th JANUARY 2024 - AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS - GROUP B
Egypt 2 (Abdalla 2, Salah 90+7 pen) Mozambique 2 (Quembo 55, Palmirim David Baúque 58)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10E64/production/_132302296_gettyimages-1925677067.jpg Egypt captain Mohamed Salah has finished as a runner-up at the Africa Cup of Nations twice, at the 2017 and 2021 finalsMohamed Salah's injury-time penalty spared Egypt's blushes against Mozambique in their Group B opener at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. A regulation victory looked on the cards when Mostafa Mohamed put the Pharaohs ahead after just 89 seconds. Quickfire second-half goals from Witi and Clesio gave the Mambas hope of recording a first-ever Afcon win. But their dreams were dashed at the death when Edmilson Macandza caught Mohamed, and Salah salvaged a draw. The Video Assistant Referee had intervened to recommend that referee Dahane Beida go to the screen to review the challenge, and Salah kept his composure to net his spot-kick off the inside of the left-hand upright in the seventh minute of added time. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/15/90b54b09-1b76-4194-82f2-1b9385b68387.jpg

Bolton fan dies after being taken ill at match..Bolton Wanderers supporter Iain Purslow has died after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest during their home game against Cheltenham Town on Saturday. The 71-year-old was given CPR by medical staff and paramedics at the ground before passing away in hospital. Bolton described him as a "lifelong fan", who had been watching the match alongside his son Stuart. The League One game was halted on 29 minutes because of the emergency and abandoned shortly after 16:00 GMT. "The thoughts of everyone connected to Bolton Wanderers are with Iain's family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time," the club said. "Iain will be remembered at Wanderers' FA Cup third-round replay at home to Luton Town on Tuesday night." Wanderers thanked supporters and medical staff for providing assistance and the "co-operation and understanding" of both sets of fans, while the club said they will offer support to anyone impacted by the incident. Cheltenham, meanwhile, said: "The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Iain's family, loved ones and the Bolton Wanderers community at this deeply sad time." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/120AC/production/_132300937_shutterstock_editorial_14297059ao.jpg

Afcon 2023: Ghana boss Chris Hughton backed '100%' by Black Stars after fan hotel altercation..By Michael Beardmore, BBC Sport.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/15/09/80022001-0-image-a-22_1705312230631.jpgChris Hughton has reportedly 'been attacked at his team's hotel' by a fan after Ghana suffered a shock loss to Cape VerdeGhana insist they are "100%" behind boss Chris Hughton after a row with a fan followed their shock Africa Cup of Nations defeat by Cape Verde. The Black Stars lost 2-1 to the minnows on Sunday and the loss was Hughton's fourth defeat in 11 games in charge. Some reports suggested Hughton, 65, had been assaulted by a fan when the team returned to their hotel but Ghana said it was only a "verbal altercation". "We've dealt with the issue internally," a Ghana spokesperson said. Former Nottingham Forest, Brighton and Newcastle manager Hughton became Ghana coach in February 2022, having previously been a technical advisor in the Black Stars' set-up. Four-time Afcon champions Ghana were unbeaten in their first five games under the former Tottenham full-back but have lost four of their past six. Two of those defeats have been significant upsets, the loss to Cape Verde following on from a World Cup qualification shock at Comoros in November. "We have had a meeting with the coach and gave him 100% assurance that we are solidly behind him," Ghana FA's spokesperson Henry Asante-Twum added to BBC Sport. "We think it is possible for the team to win the two remaining matches to make it to the next round." Asante-Twum said that security at Ghana's hotel had been "beefed up" after the incident that involved a single supporter who confronted Hughton about the team's under-performance. "There was only a verbal confrontation," he added. "He was actually trying to get closer to the coach and then the security on duty intervened - there was no arrest but security took him away from the scene. "Normally after games, tempers are high, emotions go up - we will try as much as possible to not allow this thing to repeat itself."

Jose Mourinho: Roma sack manager who brought them European success..By Jonty Colman, BBC Sport.

After 929 days that included European glory, red cards and effervescent quotes, Jose Mourinho's Roma spell has come to an end. In what was the 60-year-old's 10th full-time role as a manager, his time in the Italian capital saw him win the hearts of the Giallorossi. However a faltering league campaign, poor discipline and another defeat by city rivals Lazio signalled the end of his spell in Rome. How did it go so wrong for Mourinho after successive European finals which appeared to signal a resurgent Roma - and where does a manager who just days ago compared himself to Harry Potter go next? It is often said about Mourinho that his third or fourth season in a job is where it starts to go downhill and the same could certainly be said for him at the Stadio Olimpico, with this being his fifth role to end within its third season. Back-to-back sixth places finishes in Serie A going into this campaign were no more than satisfactory compared to seventh, fifth and sixth place finishes immediately prior to Mourinho's reign. It was through runs in Europe where Mourinho would find success and more importantly, win the hearts of the Roma faithful. His appointment in the summer of 2021, just weeks after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur, came with the chance to lead Serie A's first representatives in the inaugural Europa Conference League. Among the bigger footballing nations, there was questioning of the need for a third-tier European competition. However, Roma's 1-0 win in the final over Feyenoord in Tirana, matched with post-match tears from the well-travelled and highly successful Mourinho gave the competition an immediate level of credence. Having already won the Champions League, both formats of the Uefa Cup and Europa League and then the Europa Conference League, he marked the triple crown with a tattoo, which he says was partly because of the love he felt from the Roman public. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C73C/production/_132340015_gettyimages-1399260698.jpgJose Mourinho in tears after winning the 2022 Europa Conference League finalLast season, Roma went all the way to a tournament final in Europe again, only this time in the Europa League - the sixth European final of Mourinho's managerial career, losing to Sevilla on penalties. Heading into this season, there was some surprise Mourinho stayed at Roma after disagreements over what he was allowed to do in the transfer market and links to taking the Paris St-Germain job at the end of last season. Finances were limited because of the risk of breaching Europe's Financial Fair Play regulations, meaning loan signings and free transfers were the maximum Roma could manage. That however did not stop them from signing big names such as Romelu Lukaku, Renato Sanches and Houssem Aouar. Six games into this Serie A season, Roma were sat in 16th place with just five points. At that point, Mourinho said that he wasn't the problem. "Three months ago the idea of me leaving was seen almost as a tragedy," he said. "I received the biggest and craziest offer a coach has ever received in the history of football. And I turned it down. "Three months later, it seems like I'm the problem. I can't accept that." Their only win in that run had come in the form of a 7-0 victory over Empoli, the biggest win of any side in Serie A since 1961, properly fitting the chaos that often goes with a Mourinho managerial reign. In a fluctuating season all-round, Europe was again a big boost for Roma and Mourinho's success. They finished second in their Europe League group, setting up a tie against Feyenoord for a third straight season, with a place in the round of 16 up for grabs. Domestic results had started to pick up after a slow start. As recently as a month ago, Roma had been sat in fourth place and in contention for a place in next season's Champions League. Even in that run of better form, Mourinho could not keep himself out of the headlines, getting sent off for making crying gestures at officials during a 1-0 win over 10-man Monza in October. Then, after a run of one win in six matches that included dropping to ninth in the table, two red cards and a Coppa Italia exit to arch-rivals Lazio, a departure seemed an inevitability as opposed to a possibility. Mourinho's discipline, getting sent off in back-to-back defeats, in the build-up to Sunday's 3-1 defeat by AC Milan meant that his final match as Roma's manager was one that he could only watch from the stands. As Roma manager, Mourinho's win percentage of 49% was his lowest for two decades. In Serie A, his win percentage of 45.8% was eclipsed by form in Europe with just three defeats in 36 and a 58.3% win rate and triumphs including the club's first major honour in 14 years. Last Thursday's Coppa Italia exit to arch-rivals Lazio was Roma's fourth defeat in six against their rivals since Mourinho's arrival. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0FA4/production/_132340040_gettyimages-1922676775-2.jpgJose Mourinho was sent off in back-to-back matches against Atalanta and Lazio earlier this monthMourinho's support from Roma fans was shown by a run of more that 40 straight sell-out Stadio Olimpico crowds during his tenure, but the latest loss to Lazio and a Coppa Italia exit marked the beginning of the end. In the statement announcing his departure, Roma said: "We thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for the passion and commitment he has shown since his arrival in the Giallorossi, "We will always have great memories of his stewardship, but we believe that, in the best interests of the club, immediate change is necessary." If ever there was a statement that showed its gratitude but also unwanted reality it was this. Changing fortunes was a must, but the memories will simply last a lifetime for Mourinho, his Roma players and the club's fan base.

Steven Gerrard set to extend Al-Ettifaq contract..By Dan Roan, BBC sports editor.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6077/production/_132359642_gettyimages-1776033800.jpg Steven Gerrard has won seven of his 21 games as Al-Ettifaq managerSteven Gerrard is set to extend his stay as head coach at Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq, BBC Sport understands. According to Saudi Arabian sources, the club are preparing to announce the 43-year-old has agreed a two-year extension, having joined last July. This is despite the imminent departure of the club's star signing and fellow ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. The midfielder, 33, is close to joining Ajax having failed to settle in Saudi Arabia since joining for £12m in July. Henderson is set to have his three-year contract, thought to be worth £700,000 a week, terminated. Gerrard, however - who is reported to be one of the best-paid managers in the world on a salary of about £15m a year - is set to confirm he will now stay in Saudi Arabia until 2027. The Dammam-based club lie eighth in the table having finished seventh in the Pro League last season, finishing 35 points behind champions Al-Ittihad. Gerrard enjoyed an impressive start, masterminding five wins from the club's first seven games of the season. But Al-Ettifaq's form has slumped and they had not won in their last eight matches before a six week mid-season break. He retired from playing in 2016 and his first managerial role was with Scottish club Rangers. He took over the Ibrox side in 2018 and led them to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years in 2020-21. The former England midfielder then became Aston Villa boss in November 2021 but was sacked a year later after 13 wins from 40 games.

Man City 'will be relegated from Premier League' if found guilty of 115 financial charges..by Daniel Orme.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A9E5/production/_132339434_gettyimages-1256930717.jpgManchester City will face relegation from the Premier League if they are found guilty of their 115 charges, one of the club’s former financial advisors has claimed. The reigning champions are currently facing a host of accusations regarding their finances between 2009 and 2018. It is also suggested that Man City failed to co-operate with resultant investigations. The club have moved to deny those claims, while the Premier League's chief executive Richard Masters has confirmed that a date has been set for a hearing. Now former financial advisor to the club Stefan Borson has claimed that City could drop out of the top-flight entirely should they be found guilty. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “The scale is on a completely different level [to Everton and Forest]. There can be no question that this will end in at least relegation - that’s no question, if those charges are proven. “There's a suggestion of conspiracy over effectively a 10-year period. They [ Premier League ] are suggesting that City’s main sponsorship agreements are not for £50-60m but are actually for £8m and the whole thing was a sham. “That a whole load of people lied and a whole load of executives from multiple companies were in on it and that the club also lied to multiple other parties. Professionals, people doing due diligence on the company, the league, UEFA, the FA.” He added: “If proven, this is super serious. Nobody would argue with that. City themselves in their submission - I promise you, because they’ve said it to CAS [Court of Arbitration for Sport] - will say this is an allegation of the most serious nature.” Man City have been a Premier League club since the 2002-03 season after last earning promotion from the second tier. While Borson believes that City could be hit with some severe sanctions, the likelihood of the club being guilty is not very high in his opinion. That is due to the amount of individuals being investigated in such a long-running case. “I think they [City] will clear their name because I think a case of this nature has to have a level of cogent proof, which seems to me to be impossible to present to an independent commission,” he claimed. “And furthermore, it seems highly unlikely that the conduct that is alleged has taken place over a 10-year period with the sorts of individuals who are involved in the club and in the companies involved. “It seems highly unlikely and that will be the starting point of any independent commission. It will be a very big call for any quasi court or tribunal to suggest that this number of people have been dishonest and have perjured themselves.” ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E2BB/production/_128534085_gettyimages-1453459887.jpg

Ivan Toney: Brentford striker 'free' to play after eight-month FA ban expires..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1F26/production/_132347970_gettyimages-1252356034.jpg Ivan Toney joined Brentford from Peterborough on a five-year contract in 2020Brentford striker Ivan Toney has said he feels "free" following the end of his eight-month ban from football. Toney, 27, is now able to play for the Bees after a suspension for breaking Football Association gambling rules. The forward has scored 32 goals in 64 Premier League games since joining Brentford in 2020 and is eager to build on his tally this season. "It feels like we lost wi-fi connection but we're back connected again and reloaded," Toney told Sky Sports. "I feel like a free man. It feels like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I have a target of how many goals I want to get," he added. Toney has not played a competitive match since 6th May 2023, having served an eight-month ban for 232 breaches of the Football Association's betting rules. He was allowed to return to training with Brentford in September but the ban prohibited from playing until 17th January. Toney marked his return on Wednesday morning with a social media post saying he was "free". Toney, who has been linked with transfer interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, is set to feature when Brentford face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday. "It's obvious I'd like to play for a top club, everybody wants to play for the top clubs, fighting for titles and these kinds of things. "So whether it's this January for a club to come in and pay the right money, who knows?" In his build-up to returning to competitive action, Toney scored a hat-trick for Brentford's B team in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Southampton Under-23s, and last Saturday scored a Panenka penalty in a friendly against Danish side Brondby. "I've been training well and playing well in behind closed doors. I don't have anything to prove to anyone but myself. I want to show I can do it," the striker said. "It was the 'feel sorry for yourself' moment for so long, but I think I've chosen the right way by working hard." Among those looking forward to the return of the one-time England international is Bees boss Thomas Frank, who said he would have played Toney in their FA Cup replay at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night had it taken place 24 hours later when the ban lifted. "It's like signing a Premier League striker who can score 20 goals, because he's proved it," said Frank of Toney's return. "Every team would be happy to sign a quality player like him. Ivan is a top player but he's also very good at making the whole team better." Toney also spoke of his gambling addiction, saying he is feeling better and "focused on doing the right thing". "I'm sorted out now so hopefully, I will focus on doing the right thing going forward," Toney said. "There's no urge to do any of that rubbish, it's all good."

Luigi Riva: Italy's record goalscorer dies aged 79..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31942392.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_GettyImages-1354423543.jpgItaly's record goalscorer and former Cagliari forward Luigi Riva has died at the age of 79. Riva had been in hospital in Sardinia's capital after reportedly suffering a heart attack over the weekend. Nicknamed 'Roar of Thunder', Riva scored 35 goals in 42 appearances for the Azzurri, with whom he won the 1968 European Championship and reached the World Cup final two years later. He also helped Cagliari to their only Serie A title in 1970. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Cagliari wrote,"Forever GIGI RIVA." Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina said: "Italian soccer is grieving because a real and proper national hero has left us. Gigi Riva was the embodiment of a great man and an extraordinary footballer." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/22/21/80327535-0-image-a-33_1705959055128.jpgThe FIGC has put plans in place for matches across Italy to hold a pre-match minute's reflection in honour of Riva for the rest of this week. News of his death was also marked by a minute's silence before the start of the second half of the Italian Super Cup final between Napoli and Inter Milan on Monday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Riva's Italy career was hampered by two serious injuries, including a broken leg in 1970 which dented Cagliari's bid for a second straight league title. He played almost his entire club career with Cagliari, signing for them in 1963 and retiring in 1976 after topping the Serie A charts three times, netting 207 times for the Islanders and runner-up for the 1969 Ballon d'Or. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B7FB/production/_132399074_gettyimages-1314492868.jpgLuigi 'Gigi' Riva scored in Italy's dramatic 4-3 World Cup semi-final win over West Germany in 1970Luigi Riva Career Stats: Age 79, Played: 439, Goals: 248, Clubs: Legnano, Cagliari and Italy.

Udinese fan banned for life for racist abuse towards AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan..

Play was briefly suspended in the Serie A match on 20th January as Maignan and his team-mates left the pitch after alerting the referee to the abuse. The individual banned was found by staff and police by using security cameras, with Udinese saying they are working to identify further offenders. They added that the ban takes immediate effect. "We believe that such strong measures are necessary to send a clear message that racism has no place in football or society," the club said in a statement. "We thank the authorities for their co-operation and together we will continue to work tirelessly in order to identify and punish other individuals who were involved in this incident and that tarnish the sporting ethics of the club, the region, the city of Udine and a fan base that has always been a model of integration and respect. "We want to ensure that our stadium remains a space where everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, background, culture, and language is able to enjoy the beautiful game without fear of discrimination." Maignan told Sky Sports Italy that he could hear "monkey noises" and called for "very strong sanctions" for offenders. Also on Saturday, Coventry City's Kasey Palmer also suffered racist abuse during their Championship encounter with Sheffield Wednesday. Coventry said they were "shocked and saddened" by the incident while the Professional Footballers' Association chair Omar Beckles said that members do not believe there are "real, consistent and significant consequences" for racism.
