Joe Jacobson: Wycombe Wanderers captain on antisemitism rise in football...(Joe played in 71 games for BRFC scoring 1 goal.)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/EF1E/production/_132841216_shutterstock_editorial_13831733ca.jpg Joe Jacobson has made almost 400 appearances for Wycombe since 2014Wycombe Wanderers captain Joe Jacobson says antisemitic abuse aimed at him required his club to organise personal protection before a game this season. The 37-year-old, one of the few professional Jewish players in England, received abusive messages online. He said Wycombe also resisted calls for him to be stood down for a social media post he wrote relating to the Hamas attacks in Israel on 7th October. "It is hate messages," Jacobson told BBC Radio 5 Live. "It's not anything to do with what I'm posting, it's just comments that people want to throw at you really." Kick it Out, an anti-discrimination charity, found that there was an increase of more than 400% in antisemitism in the game in the first half of the season - with reported instances over that period rising from 11 in the 2022-23 season to 57 in the current campaign. Incidents of Islamophobic abuse also quadrupled over the same period. Welsh defender Jacobson says he had "felt quite fortunate" that for the first 20 years of his career he had not been faced by antisemitism in football. "Whenever I'd spoken about antisemitism there wasn't much for me to talk about from my own personal experience," he said. "However, since what happened in October, it seems to be more and more things going on." Jacobson said developments in the Israel-Gaza war and the historical conflict are not subjects he feels qualified to openly speak about. 'Barricade the gates'But he did say he was compelled to comment on how others reacted to the deadly attacks - in which about 1,200 people were killed - five months ago when he wrote; "imagine taking to the streets and celebrating mass murder". "That is the only thing I've spoken about," Jacobson said. "People have then taken that tweet and brought it to the modern day and months later I'm getting responses to that." Jacobson said Wycombe also received messages and complaints aimed at the club, which led to an increase in security for the former Cardiff City, Accrington, Bristol Rovers, Oldham and Shrewsbury defender. "One of them wasn't necessarily a threat, but more a demand that I apologise and demanded that the club took me away from being the captain," said Jacobson. "They said if they didn't, then they might barricade the gates at Adams Park [Wycombe's home ground]. "Then going to a match, there was all these weird things happening, with people wanting to come with me on the journey, and there were phone calls to friends on the journey saying where were we. "Then when I got out of the car in the car park there were people surrounding me, Wycombe staff saying 'come on Joe, let's go into the stadium'. And that is really different and abnormal to what it usually is. "Later on I found out that they had plain clothes security there just in case people were looking to do something. "Thankfully they didn't, and it was all fine and there was no harm. "It was something I didn't realise would have to happen going to a football match." 'Responsibility to speak out'Jacobson said the care and understanding of the League One club has been "amazing" but feels football authorities, including the Football Association and English Football League, "can do a lot more". The FA was criticised in October for not lighting up the Wembley arch in the colours of the Israel flag following the attacks by Hamas on Israel. A member of the FA faith in football group, Rabbi Alex, resigned from his post over the decision. It led to a policy change that the arch would only be lit for football and entertainment. It also brought about the foundation of an antisemitism task force, which Jacobson is part of. "Lots needs to be done, but little things like the task force that has been set up are good ways of doing that," added the former Wales Under-21 international. "For me, I feel a responsibility as one of the few Jewish footballers in the UK to speak out. "People do need to report instances. The biggest way for the FA, EFL and football to realise the problem it has is by people speaking out and reporting instances that happen - especially in football stadiums and football grounds."

Paul Tierney not selected as referee in next round of Premier League matches..i2-prod.dailyrecord.co.uk/incoming/article32273043.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_JS326525527.jpgPaul Tierney, who made a mistake in Liverpool's win at Nottingham Forest, will not referee a game in the next round of Premier League matches. However, he will be the video assistant referee (VAR) for Arsenal's home game with Brentford on Saturday. Tierney stopped play for a head injury to Reds defender Ibrahima Konate when Forest had possession in added time. He restarted play by giving Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher the ball and Darwin Nunez scored moments later. The goal gave the visitors a 1-0 victory and came in the 99th minute - one minute and 50 seconds after the restart incident. International Football Association Board rules state the game should have restarted with Forest possession from where they had the ball outside the box. The decision did not lead directly to the goal, however, with Forest regaining possession before Nunez eventually scored the winner. Forest players and staff surrounded Tierney after full-time and coach Steven Reid was shown a red card. The City Ground club's owner Evangelos Marinakis also pursued the officials all the way to the referee's office. Forest referee analyst Mark Clattenburg, who officiated in the Premier League for 13 years between 2004 and 2017, criticised Tierney's decision. "When [the ball was] given to the keeper, with Liverpool scoring afterwards, you can see why [Forest] are aggrieved," said Clattenburg. "I haven't spoken to the referee - I'll leave that to the club. I went to go into the referee's dressing room [after the game] but he wouldn't allow it." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/04/16/82019769-0-image-a-117_1709569242809.jpg

Josh Cavallo: Adelaide United midfielder announces engagement..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BAC2/production/_132901874_gijijuxawaatdyl.jpg Josh Cavallo (left) has played for Adelaide United since 2021Trailblazing footballer Josh Cavallo says "it felt right to share this special moment on the pitch" after he proposed to his partner at Adelaide United's Coopers Stadium. Cavallo came out in 2021 and at the time was the world's only top-flight openly gay male professional player. The Australian midfielder, 24, thanked the A-League club for their help after getting engaged to Leighton Morrell. He said the club had provided "a safe space in football" for him. Cavallo posted pictures of the proposal on social media at the stadium where he has played since 2021. He wrote: "Thank you Adelaide United for helping set up this surprise. "Your endless support has meant so much to me. You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible, and encouraged me to live every day of my life authentically. "It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started." Cavallo posted a video on social media in October 2021 in which he said he was gay, saying he was "ready to speak about something personal that I'm finally comfortable to talk about in my life". His post inspired Blackpool player Jake Daniels to come out in 2022. Daniels is the UK's only openly gay active male professional footballer. In February 2023 Czech Republic midfielder Jakub Jankto came out. The 28-year-old currently plays in Italy for Serie A club Cagliari.

Robinho: Ex-Brazil, Manchester City and Real Madrid star told to serve nine-year rape sentence..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11AC3/production/_132978327_gettyimages-137772093.jpg Robinho was playing in Italy for AC Milan at the time of the offenceFormer Manchester City and Real Madrid forward Robinho must serve a nine-year rape sentence in his home country of Brazil, a court has ruled. Robinho, 40, was found guilty by an Italian court in 2017 of taking part in the 2013 gang rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman. He has been living in Brazil, which does not extradite its nationals. Judges in Brasilia ruled on Wednesday that he should serve his sentence in Brazil following a request from Italy. He will remain free pending a possible appeal against the ruling, lawyers said. The former Brazil international, who has 100 caps for his country, was playing for AC Milan at the time of the crime. After being found guilty he lost an appeal in 2020 before Italy's highest court upheld his sentence in 2022. Italian prosecutors then issued an international arrest warrant for him. The footballer, who spent two years with Manchester City, told a Brazilian network on Sunday that the sex had been "consensual".

Dani Alves: Ex-Brazil player to be freed on €1m bail after rape conviction..By George Wright, BBC News.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/20/11/82677563-13218371-Dani_Alves_is_set_to_be_released_on_bail_while_he_awaits_his_fin-m-19_1710934693887.jpgA Spanish court has ruled that ex-Barcelona and Brazil footballer Dani Alves can be conditionally released from jail after serving about a quarter of his sentence for rape. Alves, who was sentenced to four and a half years in prison last month, will be released on a €1m (£853,000) bail. He had been held in pre-trial detention since January 2023. The 40-year-old was found guilty of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. The victim's lawyer called the decision "a scandal". The conditions for his release include turning over both his Brazilian and Spanish passports so he cannot leave Spain. He must also appear before the court on a weekly basis. The court additionally imposed a restraining order, preventing him from approaching the victim. The ruling came a day after Alves' lawyer requested his release on the grounds that he had already served a quarter of his sentence in pre-trial detention following his arrest. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/08/08/81004979-13060095-image-a-25_1707380311282.jpgThe decision, which was not unanimous due to a dissenting vote from one of the judges, can still be appealed. The victim's lawyer, Ester Garcia, said: "To me, it's a scandal that they let a person who they know can get a million euros in no time walk free." Ms Garcia told RAC1 radio she was "outraged and dissatisfied" with the ruling, adding it was "a justice (system) for the rich" and that she would lodge an appeal. Lawyers for Alves have not yet commented. During last month's trial, prosecutors said Alves and his friend had bought champagne for three young women before Alves lured one of them to a VIP area of the nightclub with a toilet which she had no knowledge of. They argued that it was at this point he turned violent, forcing the woman to have sex despite her repeated requests to leave. Alves had maintained she could have left "if she wanted to". However, the court found that she did not consent. Spanish law was changed recently to enshrine the importance of consent under the so-called "Only Yes is Yes" principle. In a statement, the court said there was evidence other than the victim's testimony that proved that she had been raped. It said Alves had "abruptly grabbed the complainant" and thrown her to the ground. He had then raped her while preventing her from moving as "the complainant said no and wanted to leave", it added. The woman said the rape had caused her "anguish and terror", and one of her friends who was with her on the night described how the 23-year-old had cried "uncontrollably" after leaving the bathroom. Alves changed his testimony on a number of occasions. He first denied knowing his accuser only to claim later that he had met her in the toilet but that nothing had happened between them. He then changed his version of events again, saying that they had had consensual sex. "We were both enjoying ourselves," he alleged.

Concussion in football: Dangers known for decades, say former players suing governing bodies..By Dan Roan, BBC sports editor.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/18590/production/_132982799_shutterstock_editorial_3047072a.jpg Former Manchester United and England midfielder Nobby Stiles, pictured here in 1969, died in 2020Minutes of a Football Association meeting in 1983 "indicate [it] was always fully aware of the dangers" of concussion in football, say former players and their families who are suing several of the game's governing bodies. The group alleges that despite that, the FA "failed to take action to reduce the risk to players to the lowest reasonable level", as stated in 'particulars of claim' issued at the High Court, and seen by the BBC. The Football Associations of England and Wales, the English Football League (EFL) and rule-making body the International Football Association Board (Ifab) are accused of being "negligent and in breach of the duty of care owed" to the ex-players. The claimants are said to have suffered "permanent long-term neurological injuries" as a result. "At all material times the defendants knew, or ought reasonably to have known, of the likelihood of brain injuries, including long-term neurological injuries, due to the cumulative effect of repeated… injuries to the brain occurring in the sport", allege the claimants. They say a meeting of the FA's medical committee in December 1983 concluded "players who had been concussed should take no further part in the game. "However, in the absence of disclosure, it is unclear whether (or if so what) action was taken as a result of this conclusion." In a statement to the BBC, the FA said it was "not able to comment on ongoing legal proceedings" but "we continue to take a leading role in reviewing and improving the safety of our game". cdn.theathletic.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=770%2cformat=auto%2cquality=75/https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads/2022/03/11091059/Leeds-Koch-e1647007905306-1024x682.jpgThe particulars of claim, which the group says have been served on the defendants, relate to 17 former players and families understood to be aged between their late-30s and mid-70s, with seven now dead. The players or their families initiated their legal claim in correspondence two years ago. It includes the family of 1966 World Cup winner Nobby Stiles, who died in 2020, and had prostate cancer and advanced dementia. His brain was diagnosed as having chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) - a form of degenerative disease dementia that is believed to be caused by repeated blows. A similar action was launched by former rugby league and former rugby union players in 2022. Research in 2019 showed ex-footballers were three and a half times more likely to die of dementia than the general population. dailycannon.com/static/uploads/2019/03/andrei-arshavin-head-injury.jpgAmong allegations set out in the particulars of claim are:The "causal link between cumulative blows to the head and permanent brain injury has been reported on and demonstrated for over a century", and the defendants "ought to have known" that the complications from blows to the head in football were "well established at all material times" The football authorities have been negligent in relation to the "the obvious hazard" of long-term brain injury in the sport, removing and returning players from play after a suspected or actual head injury, protecting players from the risks of multiple concussions, and failure to take steps to protect players In 1989, the FA's Joint Liaison Committee discussed a case involving a Southampton player who "recently continued to play in a match despite suffering from concussion" but the claimants "have found no evidence to suggest that any positive action was taken to ensure that clubs and/or referees complied with guidance to remove players with suspected head injuries from the field of play" The same year, at a meeting of the FA's Council, head injuries "appear to have been discussed in relation to the recent case of Terry Butcher having played on after sustaining a head injury in an international match... concern was expressed that the player had been allowed to remain on the field. It was felt, however, that it must be left to the doctor present at the match to decide whether it would be harmful for the player to continue to play… the claimants have found no evidence to suggest that any positive action was taken to protect players" Research into head injuries conducted by the defendants has "relied on those with a very close relationship to the game and/or the governing bodies" who "cannot be considered independent" Ifab before 1958, and the FA and FAW before 1965, failed "to allow injured players to be substituted at all" and "players were encouraged to play on following head injuries" Claimants "have suffered permanent long-term neurological injuries as a result of the defendants' negligence" www.fijivillage.com/news_images/6422935825a09e53a4a907f2a8f807.jpgThe claimants argue new regulations on management of concussion in recent years "amounts to an admission of liability in respect of the defendants' past failure to take reasonable steps to reduce players' exposure to the risk of long-term neurological injuries… to the lowest possible level at a much earlier date". New guidelines issued in July 2021 said professional footballers in England should be limited to 10 "higher force headers" a week in training from the 2021-22 season and permanent concussion substitutes were introduced in the Premier League in 2021. A law for additional permanent concussion substitutes will come into effect from July, but it will be up to the organisers of individual competitions on whether they implement it. The protocol means permanent substitutions can be made if a player suffers a head injury, even if all replacements have been used. The claimants' lawyer, Richard Boardman, told the BBC: "These particulars of claim are a landmark moment. This is the first time that this type of litigation has, at this scale, been brought in the world's most popular sport. "The scale of the issue is huge - many more claimants will join this case in the coming weeks and months. "There has been a systemic failure among football governing bodies in our country to limit concussions and sub-concussions sustained by the football playing community. We believe those governing bodies had knowledge of this issue going back many decades, but they failed in their duty to protect footballers from the resulting neurological impairment and deaths." www.egypttoday.com/siteimages/Larg/202110010451315131.jpgThe famous and dramatic photo of Terry ButcherIn a statement to the BBC, the FA said it was "not able to comment on ongoing legal proceedings". It added: "We continue to take a leading role in reviewing and improving the safety of our game. This includes investing in and supporting multiple projects in order to gain a greater understanding of this area through objective, robust and thorough research. "We have already taken many proactive steps to review and address potential risk factors which may be associated with football whilst ongoing research continues in this area, including liaising with the international governing bodies." The FAW said in a statement that it "is engaged in the litigation process and are unable to comment on any individual case. We take the welfare of players extremely seriously and player safety is, and always has been, of paramount importance to us." The EFL said it "understands that this in an incredibly challenging and deeply difficult situation for all those people and their families who have been affected". It added: "As a result of ongoing proceedings, we are unable pass substantial comment on the matter, however, it is important to acknowledge that prolonging this process any more than is necessary is completely unfair on those impacted. "The EFL received notice of claims in December 2022. Since then, the league and our legal representatives have actively engaged in the process and have challenged the lack of progress from the claimants' legal representative in advancing the case. "Those delays could potentially impact further efforts by the whole game to support those in need, so we call on the relevant parties to move this forward quickly so the claims can be tested in the appropriate way." BBC Sport has also contacted Ifab for comment.

Saturday 23rd March 2024 - National League
Chesterfield 3 Boreham Wood 0

Jamie Grimes scored twice and Liam Mandeville netted immediately after the interval as the Spireites stayed 21 points clear with nearest challengers Barnet, who hammered Dorking 6-0, now having only 18 to play for. Chesterfield keeper Harry Tyrer had to make an excellent early save from Tom Whelan's free-kick but the hosts took the lead in the 28th minute when captain Grimes headed home Mandeville's corner from near the penalty spot. It was 2-0 less than a minute into the second half as Mandeville tucked away Armando Dobra's cross and the 9,907-strong crowd were treated to a 100th league goal of Chesterfield's season when the impressive Dobra teed up Grimes to score his second of the game. Struggling Wood could find no response and as the five added minutes expired, the celebrations could begin. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/FAC7/production/_132999146_9d04d19c15b3ed8c070a84308a364b50cb526555.jpgChesterfield captain Grimes scored twice to double his goal tally for the seasonPaul Cook's side went top on 16 September and have remained there ever since in an utterly dominant campaign, becoming champions with five games to spare to return to the EFL after six seasons away. In contrast to last year's title race in the fifth tier, between Wrexham and Notts County, this season's has been a total procession. Chesterfield, whose 97-year spell as a Football League club ended in 2018, were 22 points clear at the top on 6 February before going on a run of three games without a victory - their longest winless run of the season. They ended that sequence with a 2-0 win at Barnet on 27 February to move 20 points ahead of the chasing pack, and leave promotion a near-certainty with two months of the season still to play - though recent dropped points against Halifax and Oldham has meant Spireites fans have had to be a bit patient.

Ashley Cole: Premier League Hall of Fame honour for ex-Arsenal and Chelsea defender..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/49FC/production/_133004981_gettyimages-98939009.jpg Ashley Cole won the third Premier League title of his career in 2010 with ChelseaFormer England defender Ashley Cole has become the latest player inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame. Cole, 43, won the league title three times - twice with Arsenal and once with Chelsea - during an illustrious career in England's top flight. He was part of the 2003-04 Arsenal 'Invincibles' team and made 385 Premier League appearances in total. "It's humbling and fulfilling to be rewarded at the end of your career," said Champions League winner Cole. The former left-back made his Premier League debut in 2000 and his final appearance in the competition came in 2014. He later played for Roma, LA Galaxy and Derby. Cole becomes the 22nd Premier League Hall of Fame inductee. He contributed to 147 clean sheets during his Premier League career, also scoring 15 goals and providing 31 assists, and was named in the PFA Team of the Year on four occasions. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13074/production/_133004977_gettyimages-1217611454.jpg Ashley Cole won seven trophies at his boyhood club Arsenal and was a Double winner in 2001-02"I went through my career just trying to give my best and be good enough," Cole said. "As a young kid, you never dream of any of this and you just do it for the love of the game of football. "I played for some fantastic clubs with incredible fans. Winning trophies with my boyhood club Arsenal and with Chelsea are amazing memories that will always be with me. "To join the Hall of Fame alongside the likes of Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba and Rio Ferdinand, I'm privileged to be in their company." Cole, who won 107 England caps over a 13-year period, was also a seven-time FA Cup winner. He retired from playing in 2019 and has gone into coaching, joining former England striker Wayne Rooney at Birmingham earlier this season and taking a role with the men's England Under-21 team.

Massive game tonight for Wales who take on Poland at Cardiff City Stadium...ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/724C/production/_133006292_gettyimages-2102601417.jpgPoland stand between Wales and a place at Euro 2024. The Poles have featured at the last four editions of the competition and boast some top quality players, none more so than Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowksi. But Wales have home advantage tonight with a packed Cardiff City Stadium set to be roaring the Dragons on from the first whistle and probably even well before. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/26/c5e4e36a-fc2b-49b7-8116-deee19a34137.jpgWales, in their most successful era, are aiming to reach a third successive European Championship. "It would be a great achievement for us to qualify," said Wales boss Robert Page. "Whenever you go through a campaign, you're always going to get bumps in the road, especially in transition, and we had one in the summer. "What pleases me is the reaction we had since then. To go unbeaten in seven and to play in the manner we've done. It really, really pleases me. "I'd be an extremely proud man if we get the job done." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/26/8876f81c-dbfa-493d-b2ae-cdaf410fa68e.jpgWales were absent from major tournaments for 58 years following the 1958 World Cup but, since ending that drought with a mesmerising run to the semi-finals at Euro 2016, qualification has become the expectation rather than a mere pipedream. On paper, Poland have a stronger squad than Wales, exemplified by their captain, Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski who is regarded as one of the world's best finishers of the past decade or more. They also have several other Champions League-level players - Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior and Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski among them. But Wales will hope to summon something extra thanks to the fact they are playing at their beloved home of Cardiff City Stadium, where they have lost only one of their past 15 Euro qualifiers. "It's an incredible record and our supporters are massive," said Page. "They took the roof off with the anthem the other day. Bring it on again Tuesday. Let's use that to our benefit to get across the line." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/26/dca70f16-1df8-411f-b075-803469c56858.jpgI don't think you can underestimate the significance of doing this without Gareth Bale. Frankly, for the last three qualifiers no Aaron Ramsey either. You look back and Bale got Wales to the Euros 2016. Seven goals in qualifying. Move that onto to the World Cup play-offs a couple of years ago he scored both goals against Austria and scored the winner against Ukraine. He is that sort of talisman. He is the greatest player Wales have ever prduced and quite frankly the greatest player these islands have ever produced. So to cope without him in a transition period as well, it does really feel like a Rob Page squad. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5F78/production/_133004442_gettyimages-2104429676.jpgRobert Page is contracted with Wales until 2026 having signed an extension in 2022

WALES v POLAND - Tuesday 26th March 2024 - 7.45pm

Rybka is Polish and Symons, although from Basingstoke, had three spells as Wales' assistant manager, including working under current boss Robert Page at the 2022 World Cup. So it could be a torn household tonight! When asked how they will be watching the game, Symons said: "Well, we're in separate rooms at the moment and there'll be no fraternising with the enemy during the course of the day. "Tonight will be opposite ends of the sofa. I think with the dog in the middle… the dog speaks Polish as well. Fluent in both languages." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/3/26/1ca2abd7-f3c2-461a-91ee-baa035676b5a.jpgA bit more from this BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast when former Wales assistant Kit Symons and his partner Izabella Rybka, who hails from Poland, spoke with Rachel Burden. When asked about whether the Poland team still revolves around 35-year-old striker Robert Lewandowski, Rybka said: "The team, I think it's very much in transition at the moment as well. So slowly the older and more experienced players are stepping down. "We still have Lewandowski, but there's a few young players coming through that like [Jakub] Kiwior from Arsenal and a couple of boys playing in Italy so I think we’re getting stronger in different areas too. "I must be 100% honest, to me it's a win-win situation, because I've been so close to Kit over the last couple of tournaments and to the whole Welsh team, I really feel like emotionally attached to the boys and and so looks like there's there's no losers for me tonight."

Report By Dafydd Pritchard..BBC Sport Wales at Cardiff City StadiumWales agonisingly missed out on qualification for Euro 2024 as they suffered a penalty shootout defeat in their play-off final against Poland on a night of crushing disappointment in Cardiff. In what was a first shootout for Wales' men in a competitive match, Daniel James missed the only spot-kick - saved by Wojciech Szczesny - while Poland converted all five. It was a desperately painful way for Robert Page and his players to lose, beaten by a Poland side who failed to register a single shot on target during the entire 120 minutes before the shootout. Robert Lewandowski's side can now look forward to joining France, Netherlands and Austria in Group D at this summer's Euros in Germany. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15D76/production/_133026498_gettyimages-2115704816.jpgPoland failed to register a shot on target in 120 minutes against Wales

It hurts. "I thought we were the better team, my message to the players at half-time was we are the better team, we will win this game. "It's so disappointing but look how far we've come, there's something good happening with this group. "We rallied around Daniel James, he had the bravery to take that penalty, I am so proud of that group." On his future, he commented: "This team is going somewhere, they're so disappointed that they haven't qualified tonight. They're hungry for it, there's a lot more to come and plenty more good times ahead."

Brighton announce record profit after best Premier League season..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4F64/production/_133042302_bloom.jpg Brighton owner Tony Bloom took over the club in 2009 when they were playing in League OneBrighton have announced a record profit of £122.8m in the 2022-23 financial year - the most successful season in the Premier League club's history. Profit after tax increased annually by almost £100m from £24.1m, with turnover going up by 17.2% to a record £204.5m. Albion finished sixth in the Premier League in 2022-23, reached the FA Cup semi-finals and also brought in huge transfer fees for several key players. The figures can help more "significant progress" on the pitch, Brighton said. "These accounts will of course catch the eye because of the headline number," Brighton chief executive Paul Barber said. "In a season when we made history on the pitch we took a huge step forward in terms of the club's long-held aim of becoming more sustainable and less reliant on [Brighton owner] Tony Bloom's incredibly generous levels of investment." Brighton have made a "substantial repayment" to Bloom for the first time, added Barber. It means the club reduced the balance on Bloom's interest-free loan, given in 2007, to £373.3m from £406.5m. Brighton's record figures come at a time when several of their Premier League rivals are facing sanctions for breaching rules by incurring heavy financial losses. Everton were docked 10 points, reduced to six points on appeal, after recording losses of £125m over three years up to 2021-22. On Monday, Everton reported financial losses of £89.1m in 2022-23. Nottingham Forest have been docked four points, which they are appealing against, after their losses to 2022-23 breached the threshold of £61m by £34.5m. Leicester City, relegated to the Championship last season, have been charged by the Premier League with allegedly breaking spending rules during their last three seasons in the top flight.

To stand up in a big match against a big opponent and to get a result with the performance that we had today, makes me really pleased. "From the beginning we looked really sharp, really active, sharp, aggressive off the ball. "I have analysed every game from them [Chelsea] and they have been outstanding. They have played some big teams and were better than them, they've deserved better results. I think they are a great team. They are extremely well-coached with good individuals. Credit to our players, they've done really well today. "The energy, the belief in the team, every time we had the opportunity to go forward we did." On Kai Havertz: "His overall contribution in every phase of play was tremendous. When you add the two goals he scored and some of the link-up play that he had in big moments, [it was] a great performance. "Individually we had some great performances. We have to do our job. Now we have to wait and see [for Liverpool and Manchester City's results]." Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports: "Very happy with the win, with the amount of chances and goals we scored. And with the clean sheet as well it shows the consistency. "We weren't disciplined enough with some stuff we did in the first half and we needed to be more disciplined and we did that in the second half." On Martin Odegaard: "We agreed that he was a player with huge talent and he could grow with us. We were convinced he could add something special to the team. "That's always a question: How are you going to handle a different role [as captain]? He has done it so naturally and he is loved by everyone. With the love that he has, it is enough for everyone to wan to follow him."

Two 19 year-old Premier League players arrested over alleged rape..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/04/24/11/84001085-13344459-Both_players_have_reportedly_now_been_released_on_bail_pending_f-a-17_1713953521252.jpgTwo Premier League footballers have been arrested in connection with an alleged rape. The pair – both aged 19 – were released on bail after being interviewed by police. The players are at the same club, which declined to comment on the allegations. “Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape,” a police spokesperson said. “A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape. A second 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. “Both men have since been released on police bail.” The allegations were first reported by The Sun newspaper, which said the alleged attack took place on Friday. It is not known if the players have been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation. The Premier League introduced mandatory sexual consent training for players and staff in 2022 following high-profile incidents involving top-flight footballers. In November a Panorama investigation found Premier League clubs had continued to play two footballers, and kept a boss in post, while knowing they were under police investigation for sexual or domestic violence.

Legendary England keeper Peter Shilton appointed CBE..Katy foolett & PA Media, BBC News, Essex.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/12/30/02/79453677-12794789-image-m-121_1703902163786.jpgEx-England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has been appointed CBE, awarded for services to football and the prevention of gambling harm. Shilton, who lives near Colchester, attended a ceremony at Windsor Castle hosted by the Prince of Wales. The 74-year-old - England's most-capped player, with 125 - was a gambling addict for 45 years until his wife helped him quit eight years ago. "Prince William was quite interested in this [gambling addiction] because it's like a silent illness and it's on the increase," he said. The former goalkeeper also reassured Prince William that the England men's team can win Euro 2024. "I think we can win it. I really do. I think we've got the players," Shilton said. "You just need that little bit of luck at the right times, a bad refereeing decision or something like that. "I mentioned this to Prince William, who is obviously a massive football fan." Shilton had already become an MBE and then an OBE. His England career took him to the World Cup finals of 1982, 1986 and 1990. His club career included playing for his hometown team Leicester City before moves to Stoke City, Nottingham Forest (where he won a league title and two European Cups), Southampton, Derby County and Plymouth Argyle. The footballer said Jude Bellingham "is a real plus" for England and Phil Foden has "suddenly really matured", while "Harry Kane is at his peak, he is a fantastic player". i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/12/30/02/79453991-12794789-image-a-122_1703902226587.jpgShilton's wife, Steph Shilton, is an addiction counsellor and the couple campaign on the issue together. She attended the ceremony with her husband and their family. "There are so many gambling companies now and so much advertising that people will get drawn to it," Shilton said. "It doesn't just affect the person who's addicted, it also affects the people around that person." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/12/30/01/79453679-12794789-image-a-110_1703900997122.jpg

It's what we've been working for all year, we know how good the Championship has been this year. "What a way to go up! I saw the space in behind [for the goal] and I knew if I put it across goal it was going to go in, so it was a nice one. "It means everything. The gaffer and his staff came in in pre-season and put a marker down of what they wanted to see, and look at this. "This is why we're footballers, we want to be involved in the biggest games, what a way to win." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/69edfe5c-5260-4a11-8478-86564508c50e.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/3894278c-26cd-4582-ab62-e387c2d22d1e.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/8f2c6b42-3b10-42e0-aa61-a8ff4c3bd8db.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/be313bf1-569f-453a-ace6-71132226c7ec.jpgSouthampton boss Russell Martin speaking to Sky Sports:"I feel really emotional and overwhelmed by the support I have had over the last nine or 10 months, especially in the tough times. "For them to give me the job in the first place, I felt like I had to do this to justify and validate it so I'm so pleased for them because it wasn't an exciting appointment for them, I finished 10th at Swansea and had a really clear way of doing things at MK [Dons], and now here. "So to take me on was really brave. The team have been so great and I'm really grateful and proud of them. "It's not about me now, it's about them, I really believe that. "They were trying to drag me up there [to lift the trophy] but they deserve it." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/652510b7-dd88-4207-b1de-200618d73b90.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/2ab1bcb6-0225-4f72-bc92-f73556ee2ca2.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/d3f27b4c-11c2-426b-860f-4b9bde9a47a2.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/8a8b53a4-5192-4da9-8059-0b3612a97eb0.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/26/3ea6e3f4-b79e-4698-a46c-9a74df1d8b21.jpg
