Sadio Mane leaves Bayern Munich to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D73D/production/_130610155_gettyimages-1573874509.jpg Sadio Mane featured in Bayern's pre-season friendly with Manchester City in Tokyo last monthFormer Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has left Bayern Munich to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. The 31-year-old scored 12 goals in 38 games for Bayern in an underwhelming season despite initially impressing. The Senegal player was also involved in a physical altercation with Leroy Sane in the Manchester City dressing room after losing a Champions League game. Reports suggest the German champions have recouped most of the £35m they paid Liverpool for Mane a year ago. Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said the former Southampton player had not had an "easy year" since moving from Anfield. "He was not able to contribute as much as we all and he himself had hoped," said Dreesen. Earlier on Tuesday Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel said he and Mane agreed "it was the best solution to untie the knot". "We had a long, big hug and we both agreed we don't like what's happening now, but we think it's for the best in this situation," said the Bayern coach. "Sometimes things don't work out as everybody wants. I have always had a very good relationship with him and this will stay. "I can totally understand he feels hurt and I also wouldn't feel happy if things like this happened. "Obviously it's something that we didn't bring into the full potential, which is my responsibility, but in this particular situation it was the best solution to untie the knot." Al-Nassr signed five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo in December and have followed that up this summer by adding Croatia midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, Brazil full-back Alex Telles and Ivory Coast midfielder Seko Fofana.

Gianluigi Buffon: Italy legend retires aged 45...A true legend of the game.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D913/production/_130617555_gettyimages-524822462.jpg Gianluigi Buffon is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all timeFormer Italy goalkeeper and World Cup winner Gianluigi Buffon has retired from football aged 45. He wrote on social media: "That's all folks. You gave me everything. I gave you everything. We did it together." Buffon brings an end to a 28-year career that saw him lift the World Cup in 2006 along with 10 Serie A titles with Juventus and Ligue 1 with Paris St-Germain. He ends his career where it began in 1995, at Parma, now a Serie B club. Buffon, who had a deal with Parma until 2024, made 19 appearances last season as he struggled with injuries. He began his career at Parma's academy and made his Serie A debut for the club in November 1995 before joining Juventus in 2001 in a £32.6m deal - a world record for a goalkeeper at the time. Buffon spent most of his career in Turin, despite a stint at PSG in 2018-19. In total he made a record 657 appearances in the Italian top flight and is the most-capped goalkeeper of all time with 176 appearances for Italy. Buffon retired from international football in 2018 after Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup that year. His career highlight was winning the World Cup as Italy beat France 5-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in Berlin. Tributes to the 'Golden man'"Thank you to our number 1. Grazie, Gigi!" the Italian national team tweeted. Serie A posted: "There is football history. There is also Gigi Buffon. A fairytale career that took off and ended in one place." Former PSG team-mate Kylian Mbappe, 24, tweeted: "It was a huge honour for me to have the chance to rub shoulders with you and cross paths with you in your legendary career. "You are a golden man who gave me precious advice that I will keep with me for the rest of my life." "A legend hangs up his gloves today," tweeted Juventus. "Your saves, your smiles, and your character will be forever remembered." In a letter to the player, the Turin club added: "It is incredibly difficult to talk about football on a day when the beautiful game bids farewell to its number one par excellence. "You were not simply the best; you were more than that. You gave the position a face and became THE goalkeeper to beat and aspire to be. "You are the player that has worn our jersey for the longest and won the most trophies. You rank second in the all-time appearance charts and are, of course, the shot-stopper with the most clean sheets to his name. You were our captain and our rock. You were simply Gigi." Parma president Kyle Krause said: "Throughout his illustrious career, which is unparalleled, Gigi has demonstrated unparalleled skill, relentless determination and unwavering passion on and off the pitch. Parma Calcio sends its heartfelt congratulations to a true champion and friend." Career Stats: Age 45, Games 1,175, Clubs: Parma, Juventus, PSG, Italy & Italy U16, 17, 18, 21, 23, Honours: 30 Winners & 5 Runners-up.

SUNDAY 6th AUGUST 2023 - THE FA COMMUNITY SHIELD - WEMBLEY STADIUM
Arsenal 1 (Trossard 90+1) Manchester City 1 (Palmer 77)
Arsenal win 4-1 on penaltiesichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/120C7/production/_130672937_arsenal.jpgIt rarely sets the tone for the season ahead and it may not be considered a major trophy by many but, in the context of how last season ended for Arsenal, the psychological impact of their Community Shield win against Manchester City on Sunday should not be underestimated. After Cole Palmer's stunning goal, the Gunners battled back through Leandro Trossard's last-gasp equaliser before Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri missed spot-kicks in the shootout and Arsenal converted all of theirs to secure the first piece of silverware of the season. Arsenal led the Premier League for 248 days last season - no side has spent as long at the summit of the English top flight and failed to win it - but as Mikel Arteta's side capitulated, City charged to stage a successful defence of the title. On top of that they appeared to have no answer to City throughout last season. They faced them three times - twice in the Premier League and once in the FA Cup - and they lost all three by an aggregate scoreline of 8-2. In fact, the Gunners had lost their last nine matches against the champions. To finally get one over their rivals, no matter the competition, was critical for Arsenal to ensure they are not mentally beaten before they even take to the pitch against Guardiola's side. "It's a statement," Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale told ITV. "It's a marker to know we can go and beat Manchester City in a big game when it matters. "I'm not sure what it'll be like this season. But that mental block is gone. We're ready to push on now." Arteta, too, was encouraged by the result. "We showed again that we can compete against an incredible team," he told BBC Radio 5 live. "There will be so many problems and challenges ahead but we did very well." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16EE7/production/_130672939_arsenal.jpgDeclan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber

Neymar transfer news: Al-Hilal complete signing of Brazil forward from Paris St-Germain..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/FBAD/production/_130792446_neymar_gettytwo.jpgThe deal for the former Barcelona player, 31, is understood to be worth about 90m euros (£77.6m) plus add-ons. "I've achieved a lot in Europe and enjoyed special times, but I have always wanted to be a global player and test myself with new challenges and opportunities in new places," he said. "I want to write new sporting history, and the Saudi Pro League has tremendous energy and quality players at the moment," Neymar added. "I have heard a lot and learned that I am following a long list of Brazilian players who have played in Saudi Arabia over the years, so I believe it is the desired place." The forward was understood to be earning an annual income in the region of 25m euros (£21.6m) at the French club. He will reportedly be paid 150m euros (£129.2m) a year in Saudi Arabia - six times the amount he earned at PSG - having signed a two-year contract. Al Hilal's chairman, Fahad bin Saad, called Neymar "a global icon" and "an unstoppable attacking force" in welcoming him to the club. The Brazilian made 173 appearances for PSG, helping the club win 13 trophies, including five Ligue 1 titles, as well as reaching the 2020 Champions League final. "It is always difficult to say goodbye to an amazing player like Neymar, one of the best players in the world, said Nasser Al-Khelaifi, PSG's president and chief executive. "I will never forget the day he arrived at Paris St-Germain, and what he has contributed to our club and our project over the last six years." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13AD9/production/_130810608_neymar.jpgNeymar shirts are already in demand in Saudi Arabia

Manchester City added the Uefa Super Cup to the Treble they claimed last season with victory over Sevilla on penalties in Athens..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6150/production/_130821942_gettyimages-1603008819.jpg Cole Palmer's equaliser for Man City sent the match to a penalty shootoutPep Guardiola's Champions League winners lost the Community Shield to Arsenal in a shootout, but saw their fortunes transformed when Sevilla's Nemanja Gudelj hit the bar after nine successful penalties. City had to come from behind in an entertaining encounter to force penalties after a towering header from Youssef En-Nesyri put the Europa League holders ahead on 25 minutes. Sevilla goalkeeper Bono and his Manchester City counterpart Ederson both excelled with fine saves before man-of-the-match Cole Palmer rose at the far post in the 63rd minute to level with a looping header from Rodri's cross. It set up the tense finale that resulted in another piece of silverware being added to Guardiola's vast collection. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/13CE2/production/_130822118_gettyimages-1603119851.jpg

Ex-Crewe manager Dario Gradi loses MBE..By Andy Giddings & Tim Wedgwood, BBC News.Former Crewe Alexandra manager Dario Gradi has been stripped of his MBE amid allegations he failed to act on rumours of sexual abuse. A review in 2021 found he "should have done more" to look into claims about coach Barry Bennell, who was convicted of abusing boys at the club. A list published by the Cabinet Office earlier revoked the honour and gave the reason as professional disbarment by the Football Association (FA). Gradi said he accepted the decision. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/9836/production/_130866983_dg1.pngIt comes after Bennell's victims and the Offside Trust, which represents some of them, called for Gradi's MBE to be removed. Bennell, who worked at Crewe and Manchester City in the '80s and '90s, is serving a 34-year sentence for 50 charges of historical child sexual abuse. He repeatedly abused boys, some up to 100 times, while promising to further their careers. Gradi, now 82, was suspended in 2016 pending an investigation by the FA and retired as director of football at Crewe three years later. He denied wrongdoing and the 2021 review concluded he "was not aware of any allegations of abuse by Bennell and did not see anything done by Bennell". But it said he should have investigated rumours about the coach, monitored what was going on, and spoken to the boys who were staying with Bennell to check they were OK. The FA subsequently said Gradi's ban from football was for life, although he said the ban was for "certain specified activities with players under the age of 18 years". How are honours withdrawn..?There is an expectation that those who receive an honour are, and will continue to be, good citizens and role models. Living recipients can have the honour withdrawn if they fail to meet that expectation, for instance because of a criminal conviction or bringing the honours system into disrepute. They can also be withdrawn if a recipient "has been censured or struck off by the relevant regulatory authority or professional body, for actions or failures to act, especially which are directly relevant to the granting of the honour". A Forfeiture Committee will investigate in these instances and if it decides the honour should be forfeited, that recommendation is submitted through the Prime Minister to the King. If the King gives his approval, a notice of forfeiture is usually placed in the London Gazette, as it has been in the case of Dario Gradi. The MBE has been withdrawn on more than 90 previous occasions.

Southend United deducted 10 points following 'final' 42-day deadline to find buyer..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1C63/production/_130876270_gettyimages-583532088.jpg Roots Hall has been the home of Southend United since the stadium was built in 1955Southend United have been docked 10 points by the National League following a High Court decision to grant a final 42-day deadline to the club to avoid being wound up. Owner Ron Martin said the sale of the club to an unnamed Australian buyer should be finalised next month. But they have yet to clear a £275,000 debt owed to HM Revenue & Customs. The deduction means Southend go bottom of the table on minus four points, but they are expected to appeal. The financially-troubled Shrimpers were given a 42-day adjournment at their previous appearance in court on 12 July to clear their debt to HMRC and find a new owner. In court on Wednesday, the judge warned Martin that the club, founded in 1906, would be wound up if the new deadline of 4 October was missed. "If this was not a football club, with the attachment of its fans, I would be winding it up today," Judge Sebastian Prentis said. "This has got to be sorted out". Southend, who have total debts of £2.5m, were warned by the National League last month that failure to clear their tax liability before Wednesday's hearing would result in a 10-points deduction - irrespective of whether their case was adjourned for a third time. "The League made the club aware on 26 July 2023 that all outstanding debt to HMRC should be discharged in full by their court hearing on 23 August 2023," the National League said in a statement. "The League are now aware of the court hearing adjournment and that outstanding debt to HMRC has not been discharged in full. "As a result, Southend United Football Club have been deducted 10 points with immediate effect." In a statement written prior to the National League announcement, Southend said they would "immediately pursue an appeal" against any points deduction. On the sale of the club, a statement said: "Negotiations are at an advanced stage with a consortium led by an Australian national, and comprising of a group of local businessmen. Completion is targeted before 1 October." After settling football-related debts of £300,000 last month to ensure they could start the season, Southend began the campaign with two wins and two defeats, which left thme in ninth place with six points. But the 10-point penalty leaves them five points adrift of previous bottom club Dagenham & Redbridge. Conservative MP for Southend West, Anna Firth, said she shared the fans' "immense disappointment that this saga has again be extended for 42 days" but was treating Martin's confidence over the pending sale of the club "with optimism". She continued: "I am aware of the potential buyer and have had several conversations with him and believe they are committed to the purchase and have the club's best interest at heart." Concern over Shrimpers' future lingers Southend have managed their solid start despite being under a transfer embargo that was put in place last September because of their financial problems. It has meant boss Maher has been unable to add to his squad for nearly a year and has only had 15 players to pick from on matchdays. Maher said it was "pretty obvious to anyone watching what's needed" after their weekend defeat by Hartlepool, adding the players and staff had been "incredible" but "need help". Wednesday's ruling prolongs the uncertainty over the 117-year-old club's future with Martin having started negotiations with several interested parties, including asset management company Kimura Capital, after putting Southend up for sale in March. Kimura told BBC Essex last month that they believed the club was a "very attractive asset" and were willing to "join with other interested parties" but were "not the right people to lead this". Those talks appear to have come to nothing, but Martin is now "confident" the interest from Australia will prove concrete and secure the Shrimpers' future.

Mike Dean declined to use VAR to save a fellow referee from 'grief'..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0B2B/production/_130895820_gettyimages-1396757188.jpg Mike Dean retired from refereeing at the end of last season after a 28-year careerFormer Premier League referee Mike Dean failed to correct a mistake in a match to save his friend and fellow official Anthony Taylor from extra "grief". Dean was the video assistant referee (VAR) for Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Tottenham in August 2022. Just before a late Harry Kane equaliser Chelsea felt they should have had a penalty after Cristian Romero pulled Marc Cucurella's hair. Dean acknowledged a "really bad call" not sending Taylor to review it. "I missed the stupid hair pull at Chelsea versus Tottenham which was pathetic from my point of view," Dean told Simon Jordan's Up Front podcast. "It's one of them where if I had my time again, what would I do? I'd send Anthony [Taylor] to the screen. I think I knew if I did send him to the screen…he's cautioned both managers, he's had a hell of a game, it's been such a tough game end to end. "I said to Anthony afterwards: 'I just didn't want to send you to the screen after what has gone on in the game'. "I didn't want to send him up because he is a mate as well as a referee and I think I didn't want to send him up because I didn't want any more grief than he already had." Dean became a dedicated Premier League VAR last season after hanging up his whistle at the end of the 2021-22 campaign after referring over 550 matches in the top flight. He was stood down from VAR duty for two months after the Stamford Bridge incident. Wirral-born Dean subsequently brought an end to his 28-year career as a professional official because being in the VAR hot seat was something he ended up "dreading". Dean added: "That was a major error. If they don't score from the corner it is not as big an issue. "But I knew full well then I would be stood down the week after. I asked to take a bit of time off because it wasn't for me. "I used to get in the car on a Friday and was dreading Saturday. I was thinking, 'I hope nothing happens'. I used to be petrified sitting in the chair."

Gilberto Hernández: Panama national team footballer killed by gunmen..By Vanessa Buschschlüter, BBC News.bnn.network/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/tragic-shooting-claims-life-of-panamanian-football-star-gilberto-hern_ndez-20230904113113.jpgA player for Panama's national football team has been shot dead in the city of Colón. Gunmen opened fire on a group of people, among them 26-year-old Gilberto Hernández, who had gathered in a building in the city. Hernández died and seven others were injured in the attack. It is not yet clear if the footballer, who also played for Club Atlético Independiente, was the target of the shooting or what the motive was. There has been a rise in murders in Colón over the past months as two rival gangs fight for control of lucrative drug smuggling routes. So far, more than 50 people have been killed in Colón, a city of 40,000 inhabitants, so far this year. The port city, on the north entrance to the Panama canal, is a transit point for cocaine smuggled from South America through Panama to Europe. The shooting happened on Sunday afternoon local time. Two gunmen forced a taxi driver to take them to a building in the city's Barrio Norte neighbourhood and opened fire on the group gathered there. The gunmen fled the scene. Gilberto Hernández had made his debut in the Panamanian national side in March this year in a match against Guatemala. The player's father urged the youth of Colón "to stop the violence", and called on the authorities to "launch projects to save the youth from this violence". He also asked the killers to hand themselves in: "Don't cause more harm." Panama's football federation and Gilberto Hernández's club expressed their condolences to his family.

Brazil's Neymar overtakes Pele goals record in win over Bolivia..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/12/09/17/65426789-11520427-image-a-1_1670606304067.jpgNeymar has surpassed Pele as Brazil's male all-time top scorer with two goals in a 5-1 win over Bolivia. The forward, 31, who went into the World Cup qualifying match tied with legend Pele on 77 goals, missed a penalty before scoring twice in the second half on his 125th appearance. "I never imagined reaching this record. I'm no better than Pele or any other player for the national team," he said. Marta has scored a record 122 goals in 189 matches for Brazil's women's team. Pele, who died in December aged 82, scored 77 goals in 92 appearances between 1957 and 1971. He was widely regarded to be one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/12/09/15/48240245-11520427-The_1966_tournament_was_a_rare_miserable_one_for_Pele_as_Brazil_-m-21_1670599694725.jpgHis official account on social media platform X paid tribute to Neymar's achievement. "Congratulations Neymar for surpassing the King in goals for Brazil. Surely Pele is applauding you today!" it said. Brazil coach Fernando Diniz said: "He came to do what he did: have fun, score two goals and break the record." Neymar became the world's most expensive player when he joined Paris St-Germain from Barcelona for £200m in 2017. He left the French side in the summer to join Saudi Pro League team Al-Hilal. "He is a very big idol, people must recognise him and accept him," Diniz added.

Bradley Lowery: Man charged over 'taunt' at Sheffield Wednesday match..By Sean Seddon, BBC News.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31075779.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_Bradley-Lowery-illness.jpgA man has been charged after reports an image of Bradley Lowery was used to taunt opposition football fans. The alleged incident happened at Sheffield Wednesday's home game on Friday against Sunderland - the team the six-year-old boy supported before he died of cancer in 2017. Dale Houghton, 31, from Rotherham, has been charged with a public order offence after being arrested on Saturday. He is due to appear in court on Monday. South Yorkshire Police said Mr Houghton had been remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at Sheffield Magistrates' Court. He has been charged under section 4a of the Public Order Act - causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress - and also faces a football banning order. A statement from the force said a 27-year-old man who was also arrested on Saturday has been released on bail "while further enquiries are conducted". Sheffield Wednesday fans have donated thousands of pounds to a foundation set up in Bradley Lowery's name since reports of the alleged offence circulated online. A statement from the Bradley Lowery foundation said it had been "so overwhelmed" and was "thankful" for the support. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31075781.ece/ALTERNATES/n310p/0_JMP_LEC_250217EFC_24JPG.jpgBradley Lowery was supported by former England striker Jermaine Defoe during his illness

A statement from the Bradley Lowery foundation said it had been "so overwhelmed" and was "thankful" for the support. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31075781.ece/ALTERNATES/n310p/0_JMP_LEC_250217EFC_24JPG.jpgBradley Lowery was supported by former England striker Jermaine Defoe during his illness [brl Turning out to be a VERY foolish and expensive exercise ..he has been sacked from his job...then banned from attending ANY professional football game in the UK...he said that he did it in reply to Sunderland fans showing off pictures. Northern Ireland v San Marino: Roberto di Maio on becoming oldest debutant aged 40..By Andy McGrath, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/132A3/production/_131399487_sanmarino3.jpg Roberto di Maio has been part of a San Marino defence that has conceded 21 goals in six Euro 2024 qualifiers
Life begins at 40, the saying goes. While that's usually not the case in professional football, San Marino defender Roberto di Maio is still going strong and enjoying new experiences. When he started their Euro 2024 qualifier against Northern Ireland in March, he became the oldest man to make his senior international debut in Uefa competition aged 40 years and 193 days. The subsequent 2-0 loss was no surprise. The rank minnows of international football have not won in 132 games and are positioned 207th and last in the Fifa world rankings. But that has not deterred Di Maio, with the 41-year-old now set to feature in Saturday's reverse fixture at Windsor Park. "I was hugely proud to play for San Marino," he said. "It was one of those games where I didn't need to psyche myself up. My adrenalin was so high, I could have run for two hours without stopping. "Perhaps some people might think 'what on earth are you doing, playing for San Marino who lose all their games?' But whoever says that doesn't know what it means to play international football." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/FBF3/production/_131399446_sanmarino1.jpg

TUE 17 OCT 2023 - EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP - QUALIFYING GROUP H
San Marino 1 Denmark 2ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BC4E/production/_131460284_gettyimages-1741354534.jpgSan Marino scored their first competitive goal in two years but could not hold on to take points from Denmark in their Euro 2024 qualifier. Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark. But Alessandro Golinucci equalised in the 61st minute, sparking wild celebrations from the home team. Minnows San Marino could not hold on, though, and Yussuf Poulsen's header put Denmark's qualification within reach. The Danes remain second in Group H and could secure qualification with victory over Slovenia in their next match. San Marino have now lost 83 of their 84 Euro qualifiers, with the only exception a goalless draw with Estonia in 2014. But, while the team ranked 207th in the world will not feature at the tournament in Germany next year, Golinucci's volley prompted euphoric celebrations from a team who have suffered defeat in all eight of their Euro 2024 qualifiers so far. Golinucci slid across the turf as his team-mates, including the bench, all ran to pile on top of their goalscorer. The goal marks San Marino's first in a European qualifying match for four years - a period of 12 matches - and their first competitive goal since Nicola Nanni's consolation during a 7-1 thrashing by Poland in a World Cup qualifier in 2021. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1588E/production/_131460288_gettyimages-1741452398.jpg
