Benjamin Mendy said he slept with 10,000 women, court hears..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/106AB/production/_116334276_mendy_getty.jpgManchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy raped a young woman then told her "it's fine, I've had sex with 10,000 women", a jury has heard. The 28-year-old is accused of attacking the woman, aged 24 at the time, at his £4m mansion in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire, in October 2020. He is also accused of the attempted rape of another woman, aged 29 at the time, who said he also attacked her at his home two years before. The footballer denies both charges, He is on trial at Chester Crown Court. The jury of six women and six men have been told by trial Judge Stephen Everett, the Recorder of Chester, that the France international was found not guilty of sexual offences alleged by other women after a trial that ended in January this year. He told jurors the jury last time could not reach verdicts on the two charges they are hearing, that of rape and attempted rape, hence his re-trial on those two charges. The judge warned them not to look up details of the past trial or follow coverage in the media, and only decide the case on the evidence heard in court in the current trial. Benjamin Aina KC, opening the trial, said: "Benjamin Mendy is a footballer who was under contract to Manchester City FC. "He would have parties and social gatherings at his home, The Spinney, in Mottram St Andrew, Cheshire. "He would have both male and female guests at his social gatherings. "It is the prosecution case that on two occasions Mr Mendy took advantage of two of his female guests. "On one occasion he tried to have forced sex with a female guest, woman A. "On another occasion he raped a female guest in one of his bedrooms, woman B." Mr Aina said Mr Mendy first met woman A, a UK student, while in a nightclub in Barcelona in late 2017 and she became intimate with one of his friends. They kept in touch and a year later she arranged to visit the accused's friend at the footballer's house, where they stayed after they all went with other girls for a night out. The morning after, when she took a shower in the ensuite bathroom, Mr Mendy appeared uninvited, wearing just boxer shorts and he was "aroused", the court heard. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1565E/production/_104464678_gettyimages-1066536250.jpgThe footballer is then alleged to have grabbed the woman and tried to rape her on the bed as she tried to struggle free, despite her repeatedly telling him to stop. Two years later, woman B was out with friends at a bar in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, near Mr Mendy's home, when they were invited back to the footballer's house. She alleges the accused took her phone from her, which contained "intimate" photos, then led her to his locked bedroom, as she asked for her phone back. Mr Aina said Mr Mendy told her "I just wanna have a look at you" and told her to take her clothes off. Woman B complied, leaving her underwear on, and Mr Mendy then threw her phone on the bed. As she went to retrieve it, the footballer is alleged to have taken hold of her from behind and raped her despite her telling him she did not want to have sex. Mr Aina told the jury: "At this stage Mr Mendy took a step back and said 'you're too shy'. "Mr Mendy said, 'It's fine. I've had sex with 10,000 women'." The footballer told police on both occasions any sexual contact was consensual and denies any wrongdoing. The trial continues.

Gabriela Anelli: Brazilian football mourns Palmeiras fan who died after being hit by bottle..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15851/production/_130354188_gettyimages-1248025979.jpg The tragic incident took place outside the Allianz Parque stadium in Sao PauloA minute's silence will be held at games in Brazil's top flight in tribute to a fan who died after she was hit by a glass bottle outside a stadium. Palmeiras fan Gabriela Anelli, 23, was queuing outside Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo on Saturday when a bottle was thrown during a brawl between Palmeiras and Flamengo fans. She suffered a cut to the neck and died in hospital two days later. "Thanks to everyone who prayed for my sister," her brother said. "She went to live with God in heaven," Felipe Anelli added on Instagram. Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), said he was working with the federal government and other relevant bodies to stop "criminal and sad episodes like this from happening again". A minute's silence will be observed at all games in the 15th round of the Brazilian championship in honour of Anelli, Rodrigues announced. "Football is passion and not a space for the action of criminals infiltrating the fans to practise all kinds of violence," he said. During the clash, police were also attacked with glass bottles and used pepper spray to try to restore order. The spray seeped into the stadium and the referee had to stop the match twice in the first half due to the players feeling irritation in their eyes and nose. Arsenal's Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus was among those to pay tribute to Anelli, calling the incident "a sad day for Brazilian football". "Gabi was only 23 years old and had a whole life ahead of her, which ended up being taken away by the violence in the stadiums," Jesus tweeted. "May we reflect and unite for the end of this violence. And may God comfort Gabi's family..." Palmeiras "expressed solidarity" with Anelli's family, saying: "We cannot accept that a 23-year-old girl should be the victim of barbarism in an environment that should be one of entertainment". Flamengo tweeted: "On an occasion that should have been a purely sporting dispute, a young woman lost her life in a barbaric and unjustifiable manner that deserves to be punished rigorously." A police spokesperson said on Monday that the person responsible for throwing the bottle was arrested and will be charged with intentional homicide.

Chris Garland - Former Bristol City, Chelsea, Leicester City and England U23 player has died aged 74..i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article6593340.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/2_GettyImages-997777986.jpgOBITUARY: CHRIS GARLAND - THURSDAY, JULY 13TH 2023
Bristol City is deeply saddened by the passing of Chris Garland at the age of 74. Garland was regarded by City supporters as a true club legend. Not only for his performances on the pitch, but his sacrifice off it. The marksman was one of the Ashton Gate Eight, who on February 3rd 1988 tore up their contracts to save the club from financial ruin – an act which will never be forgotten. The Bristol-born forward made a total of 248 appearances in Bristol City colours, registering more than a half-century of goals (54). Bristol City Club President, Marina Dolman MBE said: “We are all heartbroken. Chris was a wonderful player and a person. He was a Bristol boy through and through and we all loved him very much.” editorial01.shutterstock.com/wm-preview-1500/1941086a/d5208e98/Shutterstock_1941086a.jpgChris Garland and Alan Hudson📚 GARLAND'S CAREEREngland Under-23 striker Chris Garland was a key figure as Bristol City reached the League Cup semi-finals in 1970/71. He signed professional from apprentice in May 1966 and partnered John Galley in attack prior to joining Chelsea for a record £100,000 in September 1971. The well-built fair-haired Chris Garland cut a striking figure, and as a striker he figured often. He had three spells with City, during which time he appeared in all four divisions of the League. Garland was first signed as an apprentice in May 1966 and Alan Dicks introduced him to the first team. Garland stuck up an understanding with John Galley and was soon attracting the attention of First Division scouts. In 1970, he was capped for the England Under-23 side, coming on a substitute early in the game against Bulgaria. In September 1971, Garland moved to Chelsea for a fee of £100,000 and in the same month Chelsea paid £170,000 for Steve Kember, suggesting Garland would be destined for good service and a few medals. Six months later he was playing at Wembley in the League Cup Final which Chelsea lost 2-1 to Stoke. In 1975, Garland moved to Leicester City and regained his scoring touch - eight goals in ten games. Leicester stayed up. Chelsea went down. In December 1976, the prodigal son returned to Bristol. City were in the First Division and they needed a striker of First Division class. A fee of £110,000 was paid to Leicester. Again he helped keep a team in the First Division. Five goals in his last seven games of the season made it an inspired signing. They included the winner against Leeds and two against Liverpool. A knee injury restricted his appearances the next season, but he stayed with the club during the financial crises of the early 1980s, until his contract was cancelled as he became one of the ‘Ashton Gate Eight’ in February 1982. However, Garland spent a third spell with City, on a match-by-match basis, helping them in the difficult Fourth Division days of 1982-3. He scored 42 goals in 207 League games before spells at Yeovil Town and Minehead. Chris now living in Nailsea suffers from Parkinson’s Disease and had a benefit game against Manchester United in May 1993. cdn.howold.co/uploads/photo/600x600/81/chris-garland-5eac507ca5f04.jpgCareer words: Paul Gainey

James Berylson says he is "passionate" about Millwall and is determined to continue his father's legacy. American businessman John Berylson died from injuries in a car crash earlier this month, when his vehicle overturned and hit a tree in the United States. "It is with sincere and immeasurable pride that I take on the chairmanship," James told the club website. "It is what my dad wanted, and I am so thankful for his mentorship since I joined the board of directors in 2010 and blessed by his trust and faith in me." James, 42, said they would pay tribute to his father, who first became involved with Millwall in 2006, at the club's first home league game of the season, against Bristol City on 12 August. "This will mark the start of a new era, one in which we will strive to fulfil dad's legacy," he added. "On behalf of the Berylson family, an enormous and very heartfelt thank you to everyone for the outpouring of love and affection for dad following the tragic events of last week. "This remains a very challenging time for us but the many thousands of messages of support we received from our Millwall family have been a source of tremendous comfort. "I have witnessed incredible moments of joy, drama and success at The Den alongside my dad and these memories will last a lifetime. "From this day forward, though, it is about creating new ones." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/806E/production/_130187823_gettyimages-1247356755.jpg

Mike Dean set to end 28-year career as a professional official..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/02D9/production/_130392700_gettyimages-1398699145.jpgMike Dean is set to end his 28-year career as a professional official. Dean, 55, became a dedicated Premier League video assistant referee last season after hanging up his whistle at the end of the 2021-22 campaign. He began officiating in 1985 and progressed from refereeing in the Football League 10 years later to Premier League officiating in 2000. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) say Dean will leave the organisation this summer. Dean refereed over 550 matches in the top flight and he took charge of the FA Cup and League Cup finals at Wembley in 2008 and 2011 respectively. He was also included in world governing body Fifa's list of match officials. "PGMOL would like to place on record its recognition of Mike's achievements as well as his immense contribution to refereeing and the game as a whole," said the organisation. "We thank him for his dedication to the organisation over a sustained period of time and wish him every success for the future."

Luton Town charged by FA for incidents in play-off semi-final win against Sunderland..

Amad Diallo, who was on loan at Sunderland from Manchester United at the time, appeared to be pushed by a supporter during the game on 16th May. In the wake of the match, the Hatters issued a fan with a "lengthy club ban". There was also a pitch invasion after Luton's 2-0 win sent them through to the Championship play-off final. The FA also alleged that the Kenilworth Road side "failed to provide information, including written observations and video footage, that we requested as part of our investigation into these crowd control incidents". Luton, who beat Coventry City at Wembley to secure promotion to the Premier League, have until Friday, 21st July to respond to the charges. "We have charged Luton Town with breaches of FA Rules E21 and F2 in relation to their EFL Championship game against Sunderland on Tuesday, 16th May," said an FA statement. "It's alleged that the club failed to ensure their spectators and/or supporters ... conducted themselves in an orderly fashion, did not behave in a way which is improper, threatening, violent and/or provocative in the 14th minute, and did not encroach on to the pitch or commit any form of pitch incursion following the final whistle." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/174DA/production/_130405459_gettyimages-1255309050.jpg

Wilfried Zaha: Galatasaray in talks with former Crystal Palace forward..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11DC7/production/_130495137_gettyimages-1252782951.jpgTurkish champions Galatasaray are in talks to sign former Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha. The Ivory Coast forward, 30, is a free agent after the expiry of his contract with Palace at the end of last month. Palace had reportedly offered Zaha £200,000 a week to stay at the club where he spent most of his career. But a tweet by Galatasaray, who will be in the Champions League this season, confirmed "formal negotiations have been initiated" with the player. He has also been linked to Italian club Lazio, the Saudi league's Al-Nassr and another Turkish team in Fenerbahce. Zaha, who played twice for England before declaring for the Ivory Coast, scored 90 goals in 458 games for Palace, having joined the club as a 12-year-old. He joined Manchester United in 2013 but had two loan spells with Palace either side of a stint with Cardiff, before re-joining the Eagles permanently in 2015.

The 30-year-old scored 90 goals in 458 games for Palace, having joined the club as a 12-year-old. "As I start a new chapter I want to speak to you Palace fans who mean so much to me," he wrote. "We have been through so much together, including 10 years in the Prem [Premier League]. There are loads of amazing memories that will stay in my head forever and also some really tough times along the way, but I'm so proud to have played my part in getting us to the Prem and helping to keep us there. "I've been wearing the Palace shirt since I was eight-years-old, it's literally been my second skin and I always gave everything when I wore it. "You have all seen me angry and frustrated, but you've also seen my hunger and passion and the joy that I take from winning, and I hope that is the memory that lives on in the minds of Palace fans." An update from the Wilfried Zaha story is that he arrived in Turkey last night as he closes in on a move to Galatasaray. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/24/fa5e13ac-62ec-4b3d-9d16-06d70a611e70.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/24/6f98b090-1c00-4057-9dc0-078497380ef5.jpg

English Football League: Added-on time to be more 'accurate' under plans for new season..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C71F/production/_130557905_shutterstock_editorial_13934116je.jpg The EFL's new plans are intended to minimise time wasting and keep the game flowingThe English Football League is to introduce a more "accurate" way to calculate added-on time during matches this season. Match officials are being told to add the exact time taken for certain events - like goals and substitutions - rather than the previous "nominal" amount. A multi-ball system will also be used to help keep stoppages to a minimum when the ball goes out of play. The EFL's plans also include changes over how injured players are treated. Football's law makers - the International Football Association Board (Ifab) - announced its wish to "create fairer conditions for both teams in terms of the amount of time available in a match" at the start of the year and those guidelines form the basis for the EFL's initiative. "In line with the most recent Ifab guidance, the EFL and PGMOL (Professional Game Match Official Limited) are committed to ensure a more accurate calculation of additional time alongside an improvement in the amount of time the ball is in-play from the start of the new season," the EFL said in a statement. Along with goals and substitutions, the exact time taken to deal with injuries, penalties and sendings-off - both from the moment of the offence to either the whistle of the spot-kick or the player leaving the field - will also be added on. In a further effort to limit the amount of time lost, the EFL said match officials will take a more "robust approach" to dealing with players time wasting. A yellow card will be shown to anyone delaying the restart of play or not retreating the necessary distance at a free-kick. Injured players will also have to leave the field of play to be assessed. Exceptions to that new ruling include injured goalkeepers, players from the same team who have collided and severe injury. Once play has restarted, the treated players will have to wait at least 30 seconds before being allowed back on. There is also confirmation that as long as a player makes an attempt to play the ball, or makes a challenge for it, only a yellow card will be shown for conceding a penalty by denying an opponent a clear goal-scoring opportunity. A red card will be given in any other circumstance, such as holding, pushing or handball. The EFL added that match officials will also try to keep the game flowing by maintaining a "high threshold for penalising contact" and not awarding a foul for "all contact yet penalising when contact has a detrimental impact on an opponent". The new initiatives will be adopted for the start of the league season on Friday, 4th August, when Sheffield Wednesday host Southampton in the Championship. .............................................................................................................................................................. I have always said that us fans that attend games are hard done by the lack of a full 90 minutes play... As we have seen during the last world cup and now the present w/c they are adding anything up to 15 minutes stoppage time over the 90 mins. All forms of time wasting like legitimate stoppages or gamesmanship should all be taken in to account, i am all for it.

Juventus are kicked out of Europa Conference League by Uefa for breaching FFP rules...Adding more info to what Lostinspace posted above.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D85B/production/_130578355_gettyimages-1489545161.jpg Juventus reached the semi-finals of last season's Europa LeagueJuventus have been kicked out of this season's Europa Conference League by Uefa and fined for breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. European football's governing body has also fined Chelsea for breaching FFP rules as a result of "submitting incomplete financial information". Uefa says the matter relates to transactions which took place between 2012 and 2019. Juventus have been fined £17.14m, while Chelsea have been fined £8.57m. The Italian club will only have to pay half of their fine if their financial records for the next three years comply with regulations, while Chelsea have already agreed to pay the settlement figure. The Blues have spent around £600m on 19 new players since new owner Todd Boehly took charge of the club in May 2022, but their fine relates to a seven-year period while Roman Abramovich had control of the club. Uefa said: "Following the club's sale in May 2022, the new ownership identified, and proactively reported to Uefa, instances of potentially incomplete financial reporting under the club's previous ownership." The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) must now notify Uefa of which club will replace Juve in the third-tier European competition. It is likely to be Fiorentina, who were beaten by West Ham in last year's final, after they finished eighth in Serie A. The case against Juventus follows a 718,000 euro (£620,000) fine as part of a settlement agreement with Italian football authorities over a case concerning payment of player salaries. Juventus had also been docked 10 Serie A points last season following a hearing into the club's past transfer dealings. They were initially handed a 15-point penalty in January but Italy's highest sporting court overturned that decision in April and ordered the case to be re-examined. They would have finished fourth and qualified for next season's Champions League had they not been sanctioned. In response to the charge, Juventus said they accept Uefa's decision and will not be lodging an appeal. Club president Gianluca Ferrero said: "We regret the decision of the Uefa. We do not share the interpretation that has been given of our defence, and we remain firmly convinced of the legitimacy of our actions and the validity of our arguments. "However, we have decided not to appeal this judgment. "Lodging an appeal, possibly to other levels of judgement, with uncertain outcomes and timing, would increase the uncertainty with respect to our eventual participation in the 2024/25 Uefa Champions League." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/69D9/production/_130579072_gettyimages-1489447703.jpgAnalysis - BBC football reporter Simon StoneWhile they continue to argue their case, Juventus' decision not to appeal against this punishment means it should be the final blow inflicted on the club for trying to manipulate financial rules to cover huge losses and allow them to buy more players. In addition to May's 10-point deduction, key officials, including former vice-chair Pavel Nedved and sporting director Fabio Paratici, who subsequently moved to Tottenham, were fined by FIGC. Now Uefa has had its say. Juventus have activated a major management overhaul since these issues surfaced. They have also signalled an intention to leave the European Super League project, which former chairman Andrea Agnelli was such a believer in. It does mean they miss out on European football for the first time since 2011-12, although given they won the title instead that season, the first of nine in a row, they may hope it is an omen.

Barcelona 3-0 Real Madrid: Barca continue USA tour by beating El Clasico rivals..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16C36/production/_130583239_tv086563022.jpg Fermin Lopez is yet to play in a competitive game for Barca and spent last season on loan with third-tier side Linares DeportivoBarcelona continued their pre-season tour of the USA with a 3-0 win over Real Madrid in Arlington, Texas. Ousmane Dembele's early goal was followed up by late strikes from Fermin Lopez and Ferran Torres. New signing Jude Bellingham played for Barca's El Clasico rivals Real and the England midfielder's header was one of five Real efforts that struck the woodwork at the AT&T Stadium. "The result is a bit misleading," said Barca coach Xavi Hernandez. "We shouldn't be overconfident. The result is very favourable but it doesn't mean we played a super match. "It was a very even match in which Madrid also had many chances. There are many things to improve." New Barca signing Oriel Romeu was the first to hit the woodwork at the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys as he rattled the Real crossbar with a thundering drive in the fourth minute. But Barca took the lead shortly after as a cleverly worked free-kick resulted in Pedri sliding a diagonal pass into the path of Dembele, who drilled the ball inside the far corner from a tight angle. Real were awarded a penalty just five minutes later after Barca defender Ronald Araujo handled in the box but Vinicius Junior blasted the spot-kick against the bar. The Brazil forward then fired against the underside of the bar and although Bellingham outjumped Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen from the rebound, his header came back off a post before being scrambled behind. Aurelien Tchouameni fired a long-range strike against the bar after half-time and as Real pushed for an equaliser, Barca substitute Lopez, 20, beat Thibuat Courtois on 85 minutes with a 20-yard strike after Toni Kroos had given away possession. Vinicius fired against the bar for a third time from a tight angle yet Torres sealed the win as he ran on to a Lopez pass before lifting the ball over the advancing Courtois and tapping it into the empty net. "The result is the least important thing," said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti. "It hurts to lose, but I'll keep the good things we did. "We were good in terms of intensity, we had a lot of chances that didn't go in. Five [against the woodwork] in a game is quite rare, I don't think it has ever happened to me. But it's better if it happens in pre-season." Barca complete their trip with a game against AC Milan in Las Vegas on 2nd August while Real face Juventus in Orlando the following day.
