It's not a fracture, just stress," Pep Guardiola said. "He arrived today, he will see the doctors and then we will see. The doctors say we have to take it day by day or week by week and see how he feels. "Hopefully, he can travel to Saudi, whether he can play the first game or the second, I don't know." Haaland is City's leading marksman with 19 goals across all competitions this season and he is the pace-setter in the Premier League scoring charts with 14 goals in 15 appearances. City are fourth in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Liverpool, after winning just one of their past five league fixtures. After winning the Treble last season, City have won every trophy available since Guardiola took charge in 2016 at least once. They are set to appear in the Club World Cup for the first time following their maiden success in the Champions League.

It had been hoped City's top scorer would return for the Club World Cup in December but the injury has still not healed. "It's the bone. It needs time," Guardiola said. "With every injury you can do whatever you want but it's a question of time." Norway international Haaland, who has scored 19 goals in 22 club games this season, had already been ruled out of Saturday's Premier League match against Newcastle, after which City have a 13-day break, when they will depart for warm weather training in Abu Dhabi. If he misses the remainder of the month he will be absent for the visit to Tottenham in the FA Cup on 26 January and the league match at home against Burnley on 31 January. "It's fine but the doctors decided to stop for one week and maybe restart in Abu Dhabi," Guardiola said. "Hopefully at the end of this month he'll be ready. "Maybe they have more info than we have. "We don't have that feeling that he's unhappy. He was because he could not play - he was two months out injured - but maybe the media from Spain, especially Madrid, have more information than us. "We cannot control what people say but the important thing is he's happy. When he's unhappy, he will take his decision." Haaland returned to action on Wednesday after 10 games out with a foot injury as Manchester City beat Burnley 3-1 in the Premier League. Erling Haaland scored his first goals since returning from injury in Saturday's 2-0 win against EvertonCity resume their Champions League defence on Tuesday at FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their last-16 tie. Haaland recently returned from two months out through injury and Guardiola feels the prolific Norwegian has been preoccupied by quickly getting among the goals again. "He is defined on goals, but it is not just scoring a goal," Guardiola said. "As much it's how he is clapping, encouraging his mates and the first intense press. This is what we need from Erling. "But we cannot forget he has been two months out. Back to the dynamic is not easy. "He's a huge competitor who wants to score goals. OK, we know that, so relax. "If we don't score today, or if he doesn't score in 10 minutes, it's OK. In the process he has to try because the team always wins when they overcome bad moments." Guardiola felt Saturday's Premier League win against Everton was a good example, with Haaland having a quiet first half before scoring twice in the second half to secure the 2-0 win. "Erling is young, playing in the most difficult position on the pitch surrounded by four or five players with minor space," Guardiola added. "In the first half maybe we didn't have the special delivery players, like Kevin [de Bruyne] for example, who can find him. "In that moment he has to be positive. When he scored a goal he reacted, but he doesn't need to score because he helps us for many things." The City boss added: "It looks like I am complaining about Erling but it was in general. How many games did Erling play and how many goals? His body language is not a problem. "If he doesn't score tomorrow, the day after or next week, it's not a big issue." Haaland was the top scorer in last season's Champions League, finding the net 12 times as City won the trophy for the first time. He has five goals in five games in this season's competition.

It was the Norwegian's eighth hat-trick for City and he also became the first player to score five in a game twice for the club. City opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Kevin de Bruyne, who assisted the first four goals, was allowed time and space to cut the ball back for Haaland to convert. The pair combined again 15 minutes later, with Haaland running on to a through ball before powering it past Luton goalkeeper Tim Krul and it was a similar move that brought the third, only this time with a delicate dink to finish. Pep Guardiola's team soon dashed those hopes when De Bruyne squared for Haaland to tap into an empty net after a superb pass from Kyle Walker had sent the Belgium midfielder clear. Haaland got his fifth - matching his effort against RB Leipzig in last season's Champions League last 16 - when he low shot went straight through Krul, who then saw a long-range strike from Mateo Kovacic flash past him for the visitors' sixth.
