THE FA WOMEN'S SUPER LEAGUE - Sunday 12th March 2023 - Results.Chelsea 1 (Kerr 23) Manchester United 0 ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/B55A/production/_128962464_b603bab65ddb50cb466717eefd5da59622c61a07.jpgSam Kerr's brilliant first-half strike was enough to give Chelsea a crucial victory over Manchester United and return them to the top of the Women's Super League. Emma Hayes' injury-hit side started the day a point behind United, albeit with a game in hand, but Kerr's 23rd-minute goal decided a tight game and gave Chelsea a huge win in a thrilling title race. United dominated possession early on but were given two warnings as Kerr twice tested visiting goalkeeper Mary Earps. However, there was no let off the third time. Lauren James played a pinpoint ball over the top from the right touchline, Kerr timed her run to perfection, brought the ball down on her chest, then lifted it gloriously over Earps and into the far corner. .................................................................................................................................................. Brighton 1 (Terland 33) Manchester City 2 (Shaw 21, 89) ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/153C/production/_128963450_144fde98950de2a8ef6f68d0dd36badff1af6a27.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/126AC/production/_128963457_17ae695df909033b8928d002be2fdfaf2927e352.jpgKhadija Shaw struck an 89th-minute winner as Manchester City overcame Brighton to keep their Women's Super League title hopes alive. Shaw, the WSL's top-scorer, finished off a slick move to put the visitors in front after 21 minutes before Elisabeth Terland levelled for Brighton 12 minutes later. City were the dominant side for much of the game but despite spending the majority of the second half in Brighton territory, looked like they would have to settle for a point. However, the pressure finally told and Shaw collected a loose ball just inside the penalty area and hit a low left-footed shot past a helpless Megan Walsh in the Brighton goal. The win extends City's unbeaten run to 13 WSL games and puts them level on points with rivals Manchester United in second place, just two points behind leaders Chelsea, although Gareth Taylor's side have played a game more. Brighton remain in 11th with eight points and face a battle to retain their top-flight status. ................................................................................................................................... Liverpool 2 ( Koivisto 21, Kearns 35) Tottenham 1 (Ayane 17) ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14A38/production/_128963548_gettyimages-1472981329.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/D508/production/_128963545_gettyimages-1472983350.jpgLiverpool came from behind to beat Tottenham, whose Women's Super League losing run extended to nine matches. Rosella Ayane had put Spurs in front in the 17th minute at Prenton Park. But the Reds were soon level through Emma Koivisto before the turnaround was complete thanks to Missy Bo Kearns' finish in the 35th minute. Liverpool dominated in the second half but could not add a third as they secured their first WSL win in three games. The hosts remained eighth in the WSL table, five points clear of 10th-placed Tottenham, who are two points above bottom-placed Leicester. ....................................................................................................................... Leicester City 0 Everton 0 ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D706/production/_128964055_gettyimages-1472991315.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/61D6/production/_128964052_gettyimages-1472991315.jpgLeicester City are now just a point off Women's Super League safety after they held Everton to a goalless draw at the King Power Stadium. Everton had the match's best effort when Aggie Beever-Jones was kept out brilliantly by Leicester keeper Janina Leitzig in the 89th minute with Izzy Christiansen knocking the rebound wide. Earlier Leitzig denied Katja Snoeijs on the hour-mark. Leicester stayed 12th, 13 points off Everton in sixth. ................................................................................................................................... West Ham 1 (Asseyi 79) Aston Villa 2 (Daly 34, Nobbs 62) ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0790/production/_128963910_b128b4b714d0aa6e85b52ac486275d432f0b8434.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/13C28/production/_128963908_gettyimages-1472993784.jpgGoals from Rachel Daly and Jordan Nobbs helped Aston Villa maintain their unbeaten start to 2023 with victory over West Ham in the Women's Super League. Villa had the better of the first half and took the lead after 34 minutes when Daly swivelled and arrowed a shot into the far corner from just outside the box. Nobbs doubled the lead on 62 minutes as she slid in to convert Kirsty Hanson's low cross at the near post after the Manchester United loanee had been freed down the left by Daly. West Ham pulled a goal back through Viviane Asseyi. With 11 minutes left, the forward was left unmarked at the back post to head home from Dagny Brynjarsdottir's cross. .................................................................................................................................. Arsenal 4 (Little 4 pen, Maanum 44, Mukandi 47 og, Williamson 69) Reading 0 ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8FEE/production/_128964863_gettyimages-1473032411.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/41CE/production/_128964861_gettyimages-1473033219.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/3/12/9a7d09aa-43f4-4603-9574-f95acc26b22a.jpgRuthless Arsenal boosted their Champions League qualification hopes after cruising past Reading at Meadow Park in the Women's Super League. Kim Little's fourth-minute penalty opened the scoring for the Gunners after Easther Mayi Kith brought down Katie McCabe in the area. Frida Maanum added a second just before half-time and created Arsenal's third when her cross was turned in by Reading defender Emma Mukandi two minutes after the restart. Arsenal's fourth came through Leah Williamson, who tucked home a rebound in the 69th minute. Victory left Arsenal three points behind Manchester City in third place, having played one game fewer and boasting a superior goal difference. "I think we have improved [and] developed, today was some of the best attacking football I have seen from us," Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall told Sky Sports. "It's just three points but I like the way we have been playing the whole week." WSL TABLE..www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/womens-super-league/table

As the above post reported - Tottenham sack manager Rehanne Skinner after nine straight Women's Super League defeats..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F13D/production/_128975716_22cb64806a73eefd1663a1c20b9ac7ad888896bd.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/A31D/production/_128975714_dd97604765b45ca55fc833334dec20c92383f597.jpgTottenham have sacked manager Rehanne Skinner after a run of nine straight defeats in the Women's Super League. After Sunday's 2-1 loss at Liverpool, Spurs are third-bottom in the WSL, just two points above the relegation zone. Skinner, 43, took charge in November 2020 following a spell as England's assistant head coach and led Spurs to a fifth-placed finish last season. Assistant Vicky Jepson will take over the team for Wednesday's WSL game at home to bottom club Leicester City. Spurs have three wins from 14 WSL games this season and are just two points above Leicester and one above second-bottom Brighton, with the bottom club being relegated to the Championship. Skinner guided Tottenham from 11th to an eighth-placed finish in her first season at the club, before coming fifth last term - the club's best WSL finish - and reaching the Continental League Cup semi-finals. She signed a contract extension last April until 2024, with Everton and Racing Louisville understood to have approached Spurs about Skinner's availability. "Since joining us in 2020, Rehanne has played an integral role in our development in the women's game, both on and off the field," said Andy Rogers, managing director of Tottenham Hotspur Women. "She has carried out her duties with the utmost professionalism and attention to detail, and we should like to thank her for everything she has done for us over the course of her tenure."

THE FA WOMEN'S SUPER LEAGUE - Wednesday 15th March 2023 - Result.Tottenham Hotspur 1 (England 65) Leicester City 0 Beth England scored a stunning winner as Tottenham edged past bottom side Leicester to end a run of nine successive Women's Super League defeats. Having sacked manager Rehanne Skinner after Sunday's loss at Liverpool, Spurs looked to be heading for a goalless draw in a dour contest at Brisbane Road before England produced a moment of quality. In the 65th minute, the January signing from Chelsea attacked down the left before cutting inside and unleashing an unstoppable strike from the corner of the box into the far top corner. Just a minute earlier, Leicester had looked certain to score as Sophie Howard's header was cleared off the line with the fall up being thumped over via the top of the crossbar. Leicester pushed for an equaliser but it was Spurs, under interim head coach Vicky Jepson, who came closest to providing the game's second goal when Rosella Ayane put Celin Bizet clean through but the touch around goalkeeper Janina Leitzig took her too wide and the substitute's shot was off target. The victory takes Spurs five points clear of Leicester, who are in the solitary relegation place. Willie Kirk's side missed the chance to leapfrog their opponents and stay one point behind Brighton in 11th. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/143D3/production/_128999828_ef8fdf1649c36f55d17a3f2007773c4008b7630e.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/114F3/production/_128999807_878480adcda168cba0189076c97f2e59cf9c2951.jpg

As Lostinspace said above: 2023 Women's World Cup: Fifa drops Visit Saudi sponsorship for tournament..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C1A2/production/_129007594_gettyimages-1473887717-1.jpgFifa has dropped plans for Saudi Arabia to sponsor the 2023 Women's World Cup, says Fifa president Gianni Infantino. It follows a backlash from co-hosts Australia and New Zealand, players and sponsors about the proposed deal. Infantino said talks had taken place with Visit Saudi, the gulf country's tourism arm, about sponsoring the tournament. "At the end this discussion didn't lead into a contract," he said, calling the affair "a storm in a teacup." The Swiss official, who has been re-elected unopposed as Fifa president, also said Fifa is aiming to have equal prize money for the men's and women's World Cup by 2027. Infantino said he would not have seen an issue with Saudi Arabia sponsoring a World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as "Fifa is an organisation of 211 countries, for us they are all the same," and given that there is $1.5bn worth of trade between Australia and Saudi Arabia every year. "This doesn't seem to be a problem," he said. "But between a global organisation like Fifa and Visit Saudi this would have been an issue. There is a double standard here, which I really don't understand. "There is no issue and no contract. There are discussions and of course we want to see how we can involve Saudi sponsors in women's football generally, how we can involve Saudi sponsors in men football, or we can involve Qatari sponsors in women's football and men's football, and all other sponsors from all over the world." Football Australia chief executive James Johnson said: "We welcome clarification from Fifa regarding Visit Saudi. "Equality, diversity and inclusion are really deep commitments for Football Australia and we'll continue to work hard with Fifa to ensure the Women's World Cup is shaped in this light, and it is a historic event for our nation, showcasing the world's greatest female players and advancing the game globally." The 2023 Women's World Cup, which will be the first to feature 32 teams, runs from 20th July to 20th August and will be broadcast on the BBC and ITV in the United Kingdom.

Arsenal: Jodie Taylor rejoins North London side for rest of WSL season..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7261/production/_129018292_gettyimages-1241994138.jpgFormer England international Jodie Taylor has rejoined Arsenal for the remainder of the Women's Super League season. The 36-year-old returns to north London following the expiration of her contract with the National Women's Soccer League's San Diego Wave. The forward scored 10 goals in 17 appearances during her first spell at the Gunners between 2016 and 2017. "It feels amazing to be back - like I never left," Taylor said. "It's incredible to have this opportunity to come back to the club that I love so much. "A lot of progression has happened here in the five years since I was last here, and to see how much the club has grown and progressed is incredible." Taylor scored 19 goals in 51 games for England. She was the Golden Boot winner at Euro 2017, scoring five goals at the tournament. Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall said: "Jodie is a really experienced and talented player, and will give us added competition at this crucial stage of the season. "We're delighted to bring her back to the club and all have great memories of working with her in her previous spell here." Taylor won the Women's Champions League in 2020 with Lyon. She has also played in Canada, Australia and Sweden throughout her extensive career. Analysis - 'Shrewd business for much-needed solution' BBC Sport's Emma Sanders Arsenal were desperate to sign a striker in the January transfer window following injuries to key players Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema. They had world-record bids for Alessia Russo turned away by Manchester United and a pursuit for Lyon striker Signe Bruun also fell short. With the WSL title challenge in full swing and a Champions League quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich looming, Arsenal need strength in depth and Taylor's arrival gives Jonas Eidevall another much-needed attacking option. The 36-year-old is in the latter stages of her career but she has big-game experience and a proven goalscoring record. Her playing role is likely to be minimal but her presence will provide further competition in training and her leadership will be valuable for Arsenal's exploits in Europe. Given their desperate pursuit to find a striker, it is a shrewd bit of short-term business by Arsenal.

Lauren Smith making mark at Bristol City Women - with Nigel Pearson's backing..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11B54/production/_129023527_smith1.jpgLauren Smith is making a mark in management, with her Bristol City side aiming to move closer to a Women's Super League (WSL) return in their top-of-the-table game at London City Lionesses on Sunday. If Welshwoman Smith, 34, needs a second opinion as the Women's Championship promotion race reaches a climax, she only has to walk across the corridor. Bristol City Women share a training ground with the Robins' men's team. There are two doors marked manager's office, with Smith in one and Nigel Pearson the other. Pearson, 59, played top-flight football in his days as a defender at Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough, and has been working in coaching or management since the late 1990s. When former Wales assistant boss Smith was named head coach of Bristol City Women in June 2021, Pearson - who took charge at Ashton Gate in February 2021 - offered a warm welcome. "He was actually the biggest shock when I walked through the door and had the first conversation with him," says Smith, who was born in brought up in Newtown. "He just said 'you're a first team, I'm a first team, so don't come with anything else - we are the first teams of this club, that's it, no arguments that is it'. "From that point it could have just been words, but he put it into action straight away." Smith's side did not train at Bristol City's training ground when she arrived and says former Leicester City boss Pearson had a role in ensuring that changed. "He was really instrumental in part of that and just made it very clear, saying 'why wouldn't you be here?'," Smith explains. "Having those really refreshing conversations with a male in male football was just exciting for me. "You genuinely feel valued and welcome when you sit down with him, when you speak to any of his staff as well. I think the two first teams here are aligned in that sense, which makes it lovely to come to work." Yet for all her experience, Smith has tapped into Pearson's knowledge over the last couple of seasons. "He's got double - if not more - the number of league games in a season that I have, so a lot of our problems as managers are different," she says. "But there was something at the start of the season where I was a bit stuck with a selection choice and I was toing and froing and I had a conversation with him. "He didn't answer my question, but he led me to the answer. I felt like I had a really good support network in him and almost a mentor which is strange, because you probably don't get that very often. "He comes to watch our training sessions, I go to watch theirs. I've been with him on a matchday. He comes to watch pretty much all of our games we have here, so it is genuine support and respect for each other which is really, really good to be part of." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1186F/production/_129019717_gettyimages-1247870544.jpg

Preview:Bayern Munich v Arsenal - 5.45pm ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14658/production/_129044538_gettyimages-1436023434.jpgBayern Munich's Georgia Stanway expects a "super difficult" game against Arsenal in Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie. The 25-year-old joined the German side from Manchester City last summer. Stanway, a Euro 2022 winner with England, said she was looking forward to facing some of her international team-mates at the Allianz Arena. She said: "It will be a bit weird. It's the first time I will have played them while wearing a Bayern Munich shirt." Arsenal are currently fourth in the Women's Super League, five pointes off leaders Chelsea, while Bayern Munich are two points behind Wolfsburg at the top of the Frauen-Bundesliga. Stanway added: "They [Arsenal] are aggressive. They're ferocious both on and off the ball. They find ways to put the ball in the back of the net and they've got players playing really well." But asked whether she thought Bayern could win the Champions League this season, the midfielder said: "Absolutely. Champions League football is like no other and the nerves are high, the stress is high, the competition is high. "You've got to be at you're A-game." Bayern play Wolfsburg in a potential title decider on Saturday before Alexander Straus' side travel to Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal in the second leg. "The game [against Wolfsburg] is huge, they're two points ahead of us and to play them is a huge step," Stanway said. "We need to get something out of that game and put the pressure on." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/F838/production/_129044536_georgiastanway.jpg

Lucy Bronze & Keira Walsh: Barcelona pushing England duo to greater heights..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11110/production/_129040996_gettyimages-1246083916.jpg"Having the best players in the world makes it easier to win games." It may seem like an obvious statement but for England stars Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh, it became even more evident after they joined one of the best teams in the world. The duo - part of Sarina Wiegman's Euro 2022-winning side - had already placed themselves among the world's best players before they moved to Barcelona. Bronze agreed to join the Catalan club in June after her contract with Manchester City expired while Walsh signed from City in a women's world-record £400,000 deal in September. Both players are now thriving for the Spanish side, who are 10 points clear at the top of the Primera Division and on course for a fourth consecutive league title. The club are also hoping to add a second Champions League trophy to the silverware collection as they prepare to take on Roma in the first leg of the quarter-finals on Tuesday. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/EA00/production/_129040995_keirawalshandlucybronze.jpg

Lea Schuller's powerful 39th-minute header gave Bayern the advantage on a frustrating evening for the Gunners. Jonas Eidevall's side, chasing a first semi-final spot in a decade, came close to an equaliser on several occasions. Schuller was a standout performer, also chipping it wide in the first half. Bayern's top scorer beat Laura Wienroither at the back post and thumped her header past Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger as the hosts took advantage of their growing pressure in the first half. Further opportunities fell to England international Georgia Stanway, who struck wide from long range for Bayern, while Arsenal's best chance came when Caitlin Foord curled it on to the post just after half-time. Australian Foord was Arsenal's biggest threat on the night, testing goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs twice later in the second half before Stina Blackstenius' looping header and Leah Williamson's strike were both desperately cleared off the goalline by Bayern. Arsenal had several appeals for a penalty waved away as Foord's shot in the first half might have hit a hand, Rafaelle Souza's shirt might have been pulled back during Blackstenius' chance and there appeared to be a deliberate pass back to the goalkeeper after Williamson's shot was cleared. The Gunners have fallen at the quarter-final stage in their last three European campaigns but will hope to avoid the same outcome in the second leg at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, 29th March kick-off 8pm.
