Women's FA Cup semi-finals: Robert Vilahamn wants to 'put Tottenham on the map'..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4DBF/production/_133130991_gettyimages-2075275716-1.jpg Tottenham beat Manchester City on penalties to reach the FA Cup semi-finalManager Robert Vilahamn wants to "put Tottenham on the map for women's football" as the club prepare for their first FA Cup semi-final. Spurs host Leicester City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. Manchester United host Chelsea in the other semi-final. "I didn't really realise that it's huge in this country to be in the semi-final for the first time, but I am proud of it," Vilahamn said when asked if he is aware he has made history. "The girls this year have been great. We are taking some big steps to make sure we put Tottenham on the map for women's football and make sure we are up there competing. I love that." Tottenham's men play away at Newcastle on Saturday, allowing Vilahamn's side to play at the 62,850-seater stadium for only a second time this season. Spurs beat north London rivals Arsenal 1-0 at the stadium in December. "When the board told us we could play the game there, I was so happy because we want to be there and they want us to play more and more games there," Vilahamn said. "It's the perfect match this game, because it's a big game and we are feeling that we can perform even better in that stadium."

'I went to kick the ball and my knee collapsed'..By Georgina Hayes and Lisa Summers, BBC Scotland News.

During the first training of the year, she ruptured her ACL, a serious knee injury that research suggests is more common among women athletes than men. "I just went up to kick the ball, kind of off balance and when I jumped my knee collapsed," the 17-year-old said. "I mean I've done that movement hundreds of times before and my knee just went, I felt a little pop and just lay there. "It was excruciating pain, absolute agony”. Gigi is now six months into rehabilitation and determined to come back both physically and mentally stronger. But she does feel girls are at a disadvantage. "Boys are introduced to academies really young, whereas I wasn't in an academy until 15, " she said. "Their bodies are really built up from a young age so they are used to really high intensity training but us girls, when our bodies are put under loads of physical stress we are not used to it."

Katie Startup: Manchester City sign Brighton keeper until the end of the season..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/07C0/production/_133148910_gettyimages-938044302.jpg Katie Startup joined Brighton from Charlton Athletic in 2020, and also spent a year on loan at Liverpool in 2021
Manchester City have signed Brighton goalkeeper Katie Startup on loan until the end of the season. City's 1st-choice keeper Khiara Keating has a knee injury, while Sandy MacIver has had surgery on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). England international Ellie Roebuck is also absent after suffering a stroke earlier in the season. City are currently top of the Women's Super League, but Chelsea are three points behind with a game in hand. Startup, 25, joined Brighton in 2020 from Championship side Charlton Athletic but has only made four appearances. "We're really pleased to bring Katie to Manchester City to help us over the coming weeks," said Nils Nielsen, Manchester City's director of women's football. "She has a wealth of experience and a solid track record at a high level, and we believe she is a fantastic player to come in for this period."

Newcastle United: Magpies promoted to Women's Championship after 10-0 win..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15364/production/_133148868_gettyimages-2148597458-1.jpg Newcastle United have won back-to-back promotions
Report By Joe Nelson, BBC Sport.Newcastle United beat Huddersfield Town 10-0 to secure promotion to the Women's Championship with two games to spare. Emma Kelly, Beth Lumsden and Katie Barker all scored twice as the Magpies won the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division title. Jasmine McQuade, Charlotte Potts, Kacie Elson and Georgia Gibson were also on the scoresheet. "To get across the line hasn't been easy," boss Becky Langley told BBC Radio Newcastle. "We have had to show an incredible amount of consistency and professionalism to do that and it's just great. "We want to be a WSL side as soon as possible but we have perspective. We understand where we are at." The team turned full-time in June 2023, two years after the Saudi-led takeover of the club. Officially integrated into the club in 2022, having previously been headed up by its charity arm, Newcastle set out a five-year plan to reach the Women's Super League. They were promoted from the fourth tier last term and, following back-to-back titles, will sit one step below the WSL at the start of the 2024-25 campaign. Newcastle also reached the Women's National League Cup final this season, losing 2-1 to Hashtag United at Kenilworth Road. Local talents Olivia Watt, Gibson and Barker have been integral to the Magpies' success this term, with the added experience of summer signings such as Kelly and captain Amber-Keegan Stobbs also playing a key role. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/18422/production/_133126399_gettyimages-2038424262.jpgNewcastle United's women's side have attracted crowds of more than 22,000 fans on three occasions at St James' ParkA record 7,382 fans were at Kingston Park on Sunday as Newcastle clinched promotion - the biggest attendance at the stadium for any sport this season, higher than any crowd pulled in so far by Premiership rugby union side Newcastle Falcons. "It's so special," Langley said. "Those fans have followed us home and away. Whether it is getting St James' Park absolutely rocking or getting Kingston Park buzzing today, we appreciate them so much. "There have been so many people who have followed us to Burnley away, Wolves away. Travelled to Manchester United. Just supporting the team regardless is just so special." In May 2021, Newcastle Women played at St James' Park for the first time. More than 28,000 supporters turned out for the 4-0 win over Alnwick Town, a record for the FAWNL. Six months later, the Magpies hosted Barnsley in the Women's FA Cup, beating the visitors 2-1 in front of 24,000 fans, the biggest crowd the competition had seen outside of the final. Vast followings have continued too, with more than 1,200 Geordies travelling to Leigh Sports Village for their FA Cup tie with Women's Super League heavyweights Manchester United in January and more than 22,000 pouring into St James' Park for the 2-1 win over Portsmouth in the semi-final of the FAWNL Cup in February. Four thousand supporters were at Kenilworth Road for the FAWNL Cup final, with the majority hailing from Newcastle. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/28DE/production/_133126401_gettyimages-1975618205.jpgPaige Bailey-Gayle represented Jamaica at the 2023 Women's World CupAs Newcastle prepare for life in the second tier, which features North-East rivals Durham and Sunderland, the Magpies are showing plenty of ambition. Paige Bailey-Gayle and Lia Cataldo arrived from Crystal Palace in January, while winger Lumsden came in from Southern Premier table-toppers Portsmouth. This followed a summer window when eight new faces were signed and many fresh members of staff arrived, the new players integrating with Newcastle's existing core of local talent. "We've not been shy in talking about our long-term aim of being in the WSL," said Newcastle's women's director of football, Su Cumming. "I think it's probably something of an ambition for us - maybe a stretch too far - to say we can be in the same position next year, coming out of the Championship. "Our objective is to be well in the WSL by 2030. We're still sticking with that target."

Chelsea have an abundance of talent in every position and they can bring more on. So we knew we would suffer. "Tooney said to me in the first half, 'Mark I'm doing doggies,' and I said 'Yes, we need to,' it is part of these types of games. To beat a Chelsea team like this you have got to dig in. Every player played their part, from the starting XI to the players that came on, the magnificent fans, everyone did their bit. "As a coach these are the real moments that make it worthwhile. When you feel the collective energy of a team like Manchester United it makes you feel alive. These players performed alive today and that is why we won the game. On his pre-match team talk: "Yes I did want that [an early goal], but I also wanted another eight after and that never happened. But the character and commitment from us.. Chelsea want to press you so we committed them to playing beyond. "This is why I adapted the team. We made sure that Chelsea were on the back foot and couldn't press us straight away. It is the character of the blocks, Mary's icnredible save, you need those aspects to win games like this. More from Manchester United boss Marc Skinner speaking to the BBC...On Rachel Williams:"She always contributes. A huge character of the game, this is why the women's game is so unique. She has come from grassroots up and is scoring in big moments to take us to major finals. She did it last year and has done it this year. Football wise you can look at other aspects but it is her character. If you can build your team around players like that and characters like that you will go on to have success. On ups and downs this season:" When it is all smooth nobody learns. When there are bumps in the road it makes you take awareness of what's going on. There are things you always have to adapt and evolve. "I will be very clear, we've won nothing yet. We are in a final and that is great, but we have to have the same energy and commitment in our games between now and the end of the season. We are not quite there yet in terms of being at the very top, but we are working towards it. "Days like today show the other side of Manchester United, not just the pretty football. Today is not how we want to play football but at times you have to in order to win games. And we've done it.Drinks on the gaffer tonight?:"That is apparently right, yeah. 50p each!" ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/5/27/b2e43eb7-8350-4c6f-b388-afef3ea26272.jpg Chelsea manager Emma Hayes speaking to BBC Sport: "You can't defend as a team like that and expect a maximum result. It changes the course of the game. A mistake in the first minute doesn't help a side. These things happen in football. "We dominated the ball and the attacks. We get a goal at half-time. Back in the game, Mary Earps produces a couple of world class saves and it was our turn to be on the receiving end of not getting the big referring decisions today. On going out of the FA Cup: "I'm grateful for everything. I've been unbeaten in four years, that's an unbelievable record. As always I'm reflective on what I need to do. Congratulations to Manchester United. Their fans but in a great shift for them and as a team they performed at a good level and just congrats to them." On facing Aston Villa in the WSL before Barcelona in the Champions League: "We have to get on with, we've got a lot of games to go."

Millie Bright: England and Chelsea captain says it is 'amazing' to return to training..By Adam Millington, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C1D1/production/_133171694_gettyimages-1802008641.jpg Millie Bright hasn't played for Chelsea since November's Women's Champions League group-stage draw away to Real MadridEngland captain Millie Bright says it was "amazing" to return to training with Women's Super League club Chelsea after a five-month injury absence. The defender has been absent since November with a knee issue. "Just to be out there screaming at players again, it was nice to be back on the grass and back with the team," she told the Women's Football Weekly podcast. Bright hasn't played for the Lionesses since August's World Cup final defeat. They lost 1-0 to Spain in Sydney. She said: "[During] injury, it's probably the hardest thing, you feel so distant from everyone. Even as hard as you try to stay connected, you do feel like a bit of an outsider." Bright said the "mental challenge" of dealing with injury had been "extremely difficult". The Chelsea captain watched from the sidelines as they lost the League Cup final 1-0 to Arsenal on 31st March and were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final last Sunday. She said: "There are days where you just want to scream and I just want to run to get rid of my anger or my frustration. Rehab's not the easiest thing - it doesn't always go the way we want it to go. "The goal never changes so the off-pitch stuff for me was all about rehab and doing things at home that just help." Bright says she has done everything possible to achieve "all the small percentages" in assisting her recovery. "I think I've probably drove my agent insane by having to say no to a million things but for me my priority - even when I'm playing - is to be like 'rehab, go home, walk the dogs' and that's it," she added. "Some days, I didn't even walk the dogs because it was more beneficial for me to come in fresher the next day."

Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa: Aggie Beever-Jones wants to 'give the right people headaches'..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17923/production/_133174569_gettyimages-2149016887.jpg Aggie Beever-Jones has scored 8 goals in 13 Women's Super League appearances this season.Aggie Beever-Jones hopes she has given Chelsea something to think about after scoring in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa. Only Lauren James has scored more for Chelsea this season than the 20-year-old forward, who has been used mainly as an impact substitute. "I hope to give the right people headaches and I hope to contribute to the team and what they need," Beever-Jones told BBC Sport. "For me, I'm just happy to help the team out and scoring is just a bonus." Beever-Jones made only her third Women's Super League start of the campaign against Villa, and has yet to play a full 90 minutes in the top flight this season - yet she now has eight league goals to her name. Former Chelsea and England midfielder Karen Carney said Beever-Jones has "every attribute possible" and presents a selection headache for boss Emma Hayes. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2952/production/_132487501_gettyimages-1800433028.jpg"The thing she has got to develop now is that end product," Carney said on Sky Sports. "She's got it, but she just needs to keep working on it and working on it. I think she's got all the attributes to be one of the top players." Former Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer added that Beever-Jones will have given manager Emma Hayes plenty to think about for her side's remaining fixtures. "The fact players come in, they get the opportunity to play, they go and deliver," he said. "Now it's about what is Emma going to do moving forward?" Chelsea have been through a tough recent spell, losing the League Cup final to Arsenal at the end of March and then their FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United last Sunday. But they returned to form against Villa, going back to the top of the WSL, where they now lead Manchester City on goal difference. They remain in contention for the Champions League and face Barcelona in the semi-finals, with the first leg in Spain on Saturday. Beever-Jones said their cup exits are "not the Chelsea way". "We're Chelsea and we want to win as much as we can," Beever-Jones told Sky Sports. "Losing two titles isn't the Chelsea way and that's not how we wanted it to go this year. "I think it's evident how to bounce back from losses like that. We're just happy with the three points. We've still got two titles to fight for and today was the first step in that process."

Scotland forward Fiona Brown's fourth ACL injury of career confirmed by Glasgow City..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/18695/production/_133198999_21034910.jpg Fiona Brown (right) earned her 51st cap in a 1-0 win over SlovakiaScotland forward Fiona Brown has picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury for a fourth time in her career, Glasgow City have confirmed. The 29-year-old was forced off early as the reigning Scottish Women's Premier League champions lost 4-1 to title rivals Rangers last week. City say that, following a medical assessment on Tuesday, Brown will now undergo surgery and rehabilitation. She returned to City for a second spell in January after leaving Rosengard. Brown, who recently earned her 51st international cap, first joined City after leaving Celtic and went on to play for Eskilstuna United before joining the Norwegian champions. Earlier this month she expressed sympathy for Scotland team-mate Christy Grimshaw after the AC Milan midfielder also suffered an ACL injury. "The positive side of things is that this type of injury is way too common, but the rehab works, it's a solid process and solid operation," Brown said last month. "I've been through it three times, so I know that for a fact. It is a tough process, but she [Grimshaw] is surrounded by love and surrounded by support and it's a good club."

Christiansen was driven to run after her aunt, Lucy, died from the illness. "A lot of people aren't really familiar with how prominent bowel cancer is and how many lives it takes," she said. She is running in aid of the Bobby Moore Fund, set up after the 1966 World Cup-winning England captain's death from the disease. The charity was formed shortly after Moore died in 1993 and has raised more than £30m for research into bowel cancer. "I lost my auntie to bowel cancer 18 months ago," Christiansen told BBC Sport. "I was really, really close to her and it was a really tough time. "I was so determined when I finished playing football to do some fundraising."

Le Tissier, 22, joined in July 2022 from Brighton, initially on a deal until the end of the 2024-25 campaign. The length of the new contract for the defender, who has played 59 times and scored three goals, has not been specified. "We want to make Maya a key feature of our team for many years to come," United boss Marc Skinner said. "Maya is a leader and everybody at the club should be proud that she's decided to sign for us long term. She has the right mentality and the right attitude - and is a perfect role model for the next generation." England international Le Tissier has played every minute of United's Women's Super League campaign so far this season. After extending her stay with the club, she said: "I'm really happy to sign a contract extension with this great club and look forward to ending the season strong, while continuing to build for the future. "A big thank you to all our fantastic fans for their great support since I joined, and I'm excited for many more winning moments together."
