Wednesday 15th May 2024 - Women's Super League
Tottenham Hotspur 0 Chelsea 1 (Hamano 37)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/15/99bd6875-3b30-4e6c-a7c0-447b440a7fe9.jpg Chelsea manager Emma Hayes Speaking to BBC Sport about the win:"We have to work hard for every game in this league, you have to earn it. The league, I have been saying all year is getting more and more competitive. It's a great product because games are tight, and Tottenham on the back on a cup final put in a great effort especially second half. I'm really happy with the performance, especially in the first half but we might have to do a little shooting practice this week. On putting Lauren James during the second half:"It's been a long season, players across the league have put in great shifts over a period of time and it's a slog this time of the year so we need the whole bench no matter who starts, we are always going to need the whole bench." On Maiko Hamano:"I'm not afraid to put young players in and we see players for the future, so I'm really happy to see Maiko get on. She's in on merit, she's been outstanding in training. She's been clinical, getting goals in training. It doesn't matter who you are you still have to produce those performances and Maiko for me has been scoring goals like that all week in training." On if the title race odds are in Chelsea's favour:"I think we have the tougher of the two games. We have to go to Old Trafford and it's a fitting finale for me, being my final game. As I said to the players if someone gives you a second chance in life, make sure you don't need a third one. We're in the position we want to be in, and we'll give it everything on Saturday no matter what." On if she is emotionally ready to say goodbye to Chelsea: "I won't swear but I'm absolutely knackered." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/15/5218174c-9ed2-4fb2-b644-37ebd249dba0.jpgTottenham boss Robert Vilahamn speaking to BBC Sport: "If you look at the performance it's a really good performance. We bounced back from the [FA Cup] final and played some really good football. You can tell now we can compete against the top teams. Happy for the girls but I want to win this games, but it's not this year, it's next year." On how Amanda Nilden is after her injury: "We're going to do an x-ray tomorrow. How bad it is we need to look at it. She will probably not play this weekend." On what he wants to see in the final game: "We want to keep taking every game we have to develop. We learned a lot today and took self confidence. We want to score goals and finish on a high. We are playing good football but we want to score more goals."

'This is my last game' - Leicester caretaker Foster..by Adam Millington, BBC Sport journalist.img.vavel.com/gettyimages-2147795107-2048x2048-1713114225286.jpgInterim Leicester City manager Jennifer Foster has confirmed she will not manage the Women's Super League side next season. Foster took charge in March when Willie Kirk - later sacked by the club - was suspended following an investigation into an allegation he had a relationship with a player. She has managed eight games, but said Saturday's season-ending match against Liverpool will be her last in charge. "The club are in the process of hiring a new manager and the process is coming towards the final stages, which is great," Foster told a news conference. "The manager they're looking for is obviously one with ambition, which I'm really excited to work with. I've loved it [being interin manager] but I'm really excited to work with the new manager that comes in." Leicester's only win under Foster came in her first game in charge - a 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool. The Foxes have lost five and drawn their other two games under Foster, who said her side are a "little disappointed" with results but hope this season can be a "building block". Leicester are 10th in the WSL, having won just four of their 21 games, however they did reach the FA Cup semi-finals this season for the first time. "I have had a huge amount of pride leading this team for the last couple of months," she added. "It hasn't been without its challenges but I think we've been really unfortunate with some of the results, and the really pleasing thing for me is that we've had the performances."

Man City goalkeeper Keating wins WSL golden glove..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31278907.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_GettyImages-1748512942.jpgManchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating has become the youngest player to win the Women's Super League golden glove award. Keating, 19, has kept nine clean sheets so far this season and has played in all 21 league games for title contenders City. Manchester United's Mary Earps has kept seven clean sheets in 21 games, while Chelsea's Hannah Hampton has managed six in 10 matches. Keating, who spent most of the second half of last season on loan at then-Championship side Coventry United, played just three league games for City last season. Her efforts this year have helped City - who trail leaders Chelsea on goal difference going into the final day on Saturday - concede just 14 goals, the best defensive record in the league. They play Aston Villa on Saturday, while Chelsea take on Manchester United (both games kick off at 3pm.

Shaw, 27, is the league's top scorer with 21 goals in 18 games for Gareth Taylor's side this season. City are second in the table, trailing Chelsea on goal difference, with one game left to play. They visit Aston Villa on Saturday, while Chelsea go to Old Trafford to play Manchester United. The Jamaica international was ruled out for the rest of the campaign in April because of a broken foot. Shaw averaged a goal every 66 minutes in the league and also contributed three assists. Her award follows City team-mate Khiara Keating winning the league's golden glove on Thursday.

Brazil named as hosts for 2027 Women's World Cup..upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d4/Brazil_National_Football_Team_%28no_stars%29.svg/170px-Brazil_National_Football_Team_%28no_stars%29.svg.pngBrazil have been named hosts of the 2027 Women's World Cup after beating a joint bid by Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany (BNG). They became the first nation to be handed the rights by an open vote, with member associations voting 119 to 78 in favour of Brazil at Fifa's congress in Bangkok on Friday. It will be the first time a Women's World Cup has been hosted by a South American country. "Congratulations to Brazil," Fifa president Gianni Infantino said. "We will have the best World Cup in Brazil. Many thanks as well to the BNG bid, who have been fantastic." Both bids met hosting criteria, but Brazil scored higher on technical aspects covering areas such as stadiums, accommodation, fan zones and transport in a Fifa bid evaluation report. The United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid in April, saying they would focus on bidding for the tournament in 2031, while South Africa did the same in November. "We knew we would be celebrating a victory for South American women's soccer and for women," said president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues. "You can be sure, with no vanity, we will accomplish the best World Cup for women." Valesca Araujo, the operational manager of Brazil's bid team, added: "We are working on a transformation, not only for the country but for the continent." Brazil hosted the men’s World Cup in 1950 and 2014. The 10th edition of the Women's World Cup will follow the same 32-team format as was used in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand, where Spain were crowned champions after defeating England in the final. China, Sweden, the United States, Germany, Canada and France have all also previously hosted the competition.

Letting Miedema go 'best for the club' - Jonas Eidevall..by Adam Millington, BBC Sport journalist. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article28387288.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_Arsenal-Women-v-Tottenham-Hotspur-Women-Barclays-FA-Womens-Super-League.jpgArsenal manager Jonas Eidevall says it was a "unified club decision" to let striker Vivianne Miedema's contract expire at the end of the season. The Gunners made the decision not to renew the contract of Miedema, who has scored 125 goals and provided 50 assists in 172 appearances. Eidevall defended the decision, which has been met with a backlash including former England and Arsenal striker Ellen White branding it "shocking". "We obviously took a lot of care in that decision and we had to weigh a lot of different factors in that decision and what’s best for the club," he said at a news conference. Eidevall said he "understands why decisions like this leave lots of raw emotions". He added that it was made in the best interests of the club. "My message [to the fans] would be that, when we are working, when we are taking decisions like this, it's to build Arsenal as strong as possible for the future. "We want nothing more than to be as successful as possible on the pitch and that's the direction we want to go as a club." Miedema could make her final appearance for Arsenal if she plays in their last match of the Women's Super League season at home to Brighton on Saturday. Eidevall said Miedema has been "very professional" since receiving the news and has been "training very well" to prepare for the game.

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner handed contract extension..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32792889.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_GettyImages-2152619756.jpgManchester United boss Marc Skinner has signed a one-year contract extension, with the option of a further year. Skinner guided United to their first piece of major silverware last weekend as they thrashed Tottenham to win the Women's FA Cup. He has come under pressure this season with United, who were runners-up in the Women's Super League last year, sitting fifth this term with one round of games to go. He said continuing his time as head coach is "an honour". "Being able to secure the team’s first major trophy at Wembley was a real career highlight for me and another sign of our continued growth, on and off the field," he added. Skinner joined United in the summer of 2021, leading them to fourth in the WSL in his first season before reaching the FA Cup final and securing Champions League qualification last year.

I wouldn't change a thing - says Emma Hayes..by Adam Millington, BBC Sport journalist.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article28795025.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/3_Emma-HayesGettyImages-1451098794.jpgDeparting Chelsea manager Emma Hayes says she will be "as professional as she can until the end" as her side prepare for the Women's Super League title race going down to the final day. Hayes' side top the division because of a goal difference that is better by two over Manchester City. Hayes, whose 12-year spell as manager will come to an end when she takes charge of the United States this summer, said she "wouldn't change a thing" about her time in charge. "I had my last drive into work today, my office is already cleared out, it's my last coaching session with a group of people who I have built strong bonds with," she said as she reflected on her career in a news conference. "I wouldn't change a single thing and I am so delighted to get one more training session with my team and one more game and I know for sure we're going to enjoy it." Chelsea play Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday while City take on Aston Villa. All of the league's final matches kick off at 3pm. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31252874.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_GettyImages-1736876120jp.jpgIt has been a long farewell for Hayes since she announced her intention to leave in November. She said that dealing with emotion is one of the most difficult parts of being a manager. Hayes said: "I think staying on top of the emotion is something I'm really good at, but sometimes I really hate that. "I think you have to do that a lot as a manager, take a lot of emotion out of things which is probably one of the reasons why I'm leaving this job. "I actually miss 'Emma' and feeling like I don't have to watch every word I say, or worry about what my body language looks like in every situation because of cameras on me." Hayes has presided over a trophy-laden era for Chelsea since taking charge in 2012. The Blues boss added she is proud of the "journey" her team has gone on as they become one of the world's best sides. "Going from nothing, going from an unranked team that was close to relegation, that had no resources, had no facilities, no players that were professional," she said. "People always like to pick holes at the things you don’t do. What we’ve achieved here is remarkable, considering our starting point. We didn’t have a history in women’s football, we’re now considered one of the top sides in the world."

Saturday 18th May 2024 - Women's Super League - Final Day Result
Manchester United 0 Chelsea 6 (Ramirez 2, 45+2, Rytting Kaneryd 8, Nusken 44, Leupolz 47, Kirby 45)
i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32840335.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_GettyImages-2152965512.jpg
Report by Emma Sanders, BBC Sport journalist at Old Trafford.Chelsea wrapped up a sensational fifth successive Women's Super League title by thrashing Manchester United at Old Trafford in Emma Hayes' final game in charge. The Blues, who led rivals Manchester City by goal difference at the top of the table heading into the final day, knew a big scoreline was potentially needed to win the title. And with so much at stake Chelsea's players delivered with a ruthlessness that United could never match at Old Trafford. British record signing Mayra Ramirez produced an outstanding individual display, scoring twice and assisting the other two as Hayes' side went in at the break with a 4-0 lead. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Sjoeke Nusken, Melanie Leupolz and Fran Kirby added to Ramirez's dazzling double as Chelsea romped to victory. It was the perfect farewell for Hayes, who was full of emotion on a remarkable afternoon in Manchester, capping off a 12-year career at the Blues in style. United legend Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Dave Brailsford, the representative of new minority owners Ineos, were in the director's box watching on as United barely laid a glove on the champions. Aside from Maya Le Tissier's header which bounced off the crossbar with United already trailing 2-0, and a terrible miss from close range by Lucia Garcia late on, Marc Skinner's side failed to create much to trouble Chelsea. Hayes, who leaves to manage the United States women's national team, bowed out to the familiar sound of 3,000 travelling fans chanting "Chelsea, champions" and with a 14th major trophy at the club. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32840337.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/1_GettyImages-2152965470jpgHy.jpgIt was a rare sunny day in Manchester but there was nothing out of the ordinary from Chelsea - they were ruthless, clinical and ended the day as winners yet again. But this was a special day for the Blues as they not only produced the goods on the pitch, but partied in style in the stands throughout. Ramirez's stunning display set the tone as she dribbled past defenders, shrugged off others and entertained throughout, delivering for the fans who had travelled up from London on Saturday morning. "Emma, what's the score," supporters chanted and she turned to put up her hand, showing five, as the game continued in the background, seemingly passing by without people noticing. There was also a cameo for departing England international Kirby, who came on as a substitute for the final 20 minutes and was able to soak in the success she has played such a key part in throughout her Blues career. On the day, the damage was done early. Chelsea came out of the blocks firing as Ramirez nodded in Guro Reiten's curling cross for the opener. Ramirez turned provided minutes later for Kaneryd, who dinked it coolly over goalkeeper Mary Earps, before Nusken was again set-up by the Colombian striker. The second goal from Ramirez was a special one as she burst through two defenders in the United box and nonchalantly fired it into the far corner. And before United could even settle in the second half, Leupolz had made it 5-0 to Chelsea, poking into an empty net after a defensive horror show. Kirby capped off a hugely successful spell at the club with a goal late on and was swarmed by her team-mates immediately afterwards, while taking in the adulation of Chelsea's fans. It was a poor ending to a week where Manchester United celebrated winning their first women's major trophy, beating Tottenham at Wembley to lift the Women's FA Cup, days before manager Skinner signed a new contract extension. Skinner said after the game his side are "not where we want to be", but thinks his players are closer to Chelsea's than the scoreline suggested. "I don’t think it reflects the gap," he added. "I think it reflects the gap in the game. The counter-attacks were aggressive and physical and we knew they would happen. "Apart from that, I don't think we're 6-0 away from Chelsea at all, but we do need to continue to develop the depth of our squad in order to compete. Sometimes you have to be realistic. There is a gap for sure, we have to try and bridge it over the summer." This performance only emphasised the gap between the WSL's elite and United this season - and the level Hayes' side have set for those chasing in England. This is the legacy she leaves behind.

Saturday 18th May 2024 - Women's Super League - Final Day Result
Aston Villa 1 (Daly 68) Manchester City 2 (Fowler 21, Hemp 77)
i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32841094.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_GettyImages-2153555413.jpg
Report by Emma Smith, BBC Sport journalist at Villa Park.Manchester City missed out on the Women's Super League title despite beating Aston Villa in their final fixture. Mary Fowler's 21st-minute strike put Gareth Taylor's side ahead at Villa Park. Rachel Daly equalised for Villa midway through the second half, before Lauren Hemp bundled in City's winner. But City needed Chelsea to drop points against Manchester United, or for their own victory margin at Villa to be big enough to overturn the Blues' goal difference advantage. Chelsea's huge win at Old Trafford ensured City remain without a WSL title success since 2016. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32841095.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_GettyImages-2152981553.jpgLauren HempCity took the lead when Fowler did well to control a low cross from the left, turn her marker and fire left-footed into the far corner past Anna Leat. But by this point Chelsea had already scored twice, and as the goals kept flying in it left City facing an ever-increasing task to overtake their rivals at the top of the WSL. Needing to rack up the goals themselves, City were frustrated by hitting the bar twice in the opening half - first through an Alanna Kennedy header, then via a half-volley from former Villa midfielder Laura Blinkilde Brown. As City's belief waned in the second half, Daly took advantage by streaking away down the left before cutting inside and finishing right-footed past keeper Khiara Keating. Hemp earned City the three points, nudging home a Fowler cross from close range in the 77th minute - but by that point, City would have needed to score another six to overhaul Chelsea. This game also served as a farewell for Villa manager Carla Ward, who is stepping down after three years in charge, and for Manchester City defender Steph Houghton, the former England captain who made her final appearance before retiring from professional football. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/05/18/16/85042277-0-image-a-6_1716047686458.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/05/18/16/85042179-0-image-a-7_1716047957934.jpg

Saturday 18th May 2024 - Women's Super League - Final Day Result
Arsenal 5 (Russo 17, 24, Miedema 64, Carabalí 67 og, Maanum 88) Brighton & Hove Albion 0
Report by Michael Emons, BBC Sport.Record Women’s Super League goalscorer Vivianne Miedema scored on her last appearance for Arsenal as the Gunners ended their season by thrashing Brighton. Earlier this week, it was announced that the 27-year-old Dutch striker would leave the club in the summer when her contract expires and she was named among the substitutes. She received a fantastic ovation when she replaced Alessia Russo and came on in the 62nd minute and scored within two minutes, finishing first time after a through ball from Beth Mead. That was Miedema’s 80th goal in the WSL and 126th overall in Arsenal colours from 173 appearances. At the time of Miedema’s introduction, the Gunners held a 2-0 lead at the time after England forward Russo had given them a 17th-minute advantage with a first-time strike from just inside the penalty area. Arsenal, who were already guaranteed to finish third, were gifted another goal seven minutes later as Maria Thorisdottir’s poor pass in her penalty area saw Russo, the WSL player of the month for April, get her second goal. The hosts had a chance to make it 3-0 when Jorelyn Carabali fouled Steph Catley in the 18-yard box but Kim Little hit the post with the penalty. But Miedema made an instant impact after coming on, before Laia Codina headed in Mead’s corner from the left for the Gunners’ fourth goal, with Brighton defender Jorelyn Carabali, on the line, unable to keep the ball out. Miedema then set up Arsenal's fifth, playing the pass through the middle, with Frida Maanum racing on to it and slotting the ball past Sophie Baggaley in the 89th minute. This match could be the last WSL game at Meadow Park after Arsenal announced plans to stage all 11 of their league matches in 2024-25 at Emirates Stadium - and this was a fine finish to the Gunners’ campaign. static0.givemesportimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/GettyImages-1437097978-scaled.jpg

Saturday 18th May 2024 - Women's Super League - Final Day Result
Tottenham Hotspur 3 (England 4, Naz 86, Spence 90+9) West Ham United 1 (Ueki 50)
www.bet-experts.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tottenham-vs-West-Ham-Prediction-1180x665.jpg
Report by Marissa Thomas, BBC Sport journalist.Drew Spence scored a stunning goal in added time as Tottenham beat West Ham on the final day of the Women's Super League season. Jessica Naz's pass on the edge of the box found Spence who curled into the top corner. Before Spence finished with a flourish, Naz's own well-struck effort into the far corner had restored Spurs' lead as they finished the campaign well. Beaten FA Cup finalists Spurs went ahead after four minutes when Martha Thomas reacted quickest to a defensive error from West Ham goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, clipping the ball into the box for Bethany England to fire into the bottom corner. Shortly after the break, Honoka Hayashi's through ball was met by Riko Ueki whose precise finish found the back of the net from a tight angle. West Ham may have thought they had done enough for a point before the late interventions from Naz and Spence said otherwise. Tottenham end their campaign in sixth position while the Hammers finish the season in 11th place, nine points above relegated Bristol City.

Leicester City 0 Liverpool 4 (Haug 7, Kiernan 66, 83, 90+4)i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article20886884.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-1233592712.jpgLeanne Kiernan came off the bench to score a hat-trick as Liverpool clinched fourth spot in the Women's Super League with a comfortable victory over Leicester City. Sophie Roman Haug put the Reds ahead early on when she planted a header from Taylor Hinds' cross beyond Janina Leitzig. Kiernan, a 65th-minute substitute, added a second after the break at King Power Stadium with a glancing header from Ceri Holland's delivery. The Republic of Ireland striker notched her second with a powerful finish on the counter-attack which Leitzig was unable to keep out. Kiernan completed her treble in added time with a rampaging run forward before striking the ball low into the corner of the net. Julie Thibaud and Sophie Howard had Leicester's only real chances of note on what was an otherwise quiet afternoon for Reds goalkeeper Rachael Laws. Liverpool end the season on 41 points - 14 behind champions Chelsea - while Leicester finish the campaign in 12th with 18 points. The defeat means Leicester interim boss Jennifer Foster failed to win any of her five games in charge.

Saturday 18th May 2024 - Women's Super League - Final Day Result
Bristol City 0 Everton 4 (Snoeijs 16, Holmgaard 23, Bissell 48, Piemonte 90+4)ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/62F8/production/_114263352_everton_cele_fa.jpgBristol City’s miserable Women’s Super League campaign ended with home defeat by Everton. The already-relegated Robins finish the season with only six points, the lowest from a side in a 22-game WSL season, and nine successive defeats. Everton took the lead with a superb turn and finish from Katja Snoeijs after Sara Holmgaard picked her out. Snoeijs turned provider for the Toffees' second after 23 minutes as she pulled it back for Holmgaard to side-foot into the far corner. Early in the second half, Emma Bissell scored against her former club, volleying in from Katrine Veje's cross and Martina Piemonte added a fourth in injury-time, sweeping into the bottom corner from Eleanor Dale's cut-back. The result saw Everton finish the WSL season in eighth place.

Emma Hayes relieved after 'toughest' WSL title with Chelsea..by Sam Drury, BBC Sport journalistsportshub.cbsistatic.com/i/r/2024/05/18/b06ee2e4-240d-46cb-889f-69a297b846a9/thumbnail/770x433/89141370e7a56d1985c85d7303312f04/untitled-design-2024-05-18t195650-426.pngEmma Hayes says Chelsea's fifth successive Women's Super League title has been "the toughest, without doubt". An emphatic 6-0 victory at Manchester United on the final day of the season meant they beat Manchester City to the crown on goal difference. Hayes, 47, signed off her reign with a seventh WSL title after 12 years as Chelsea manager. "I can't say it's my most enjoyable but it's definitely been the toughest, without doubt, and for that reason probably the sweetest," she told Sky Sports. "I'm just so relieved it's over. "The hardest thing to do is five in a row because people take their eye off the ball. My legacy is winning while building a team for the future." Hayes will become manager of the United States women's team before this summer's Olympic Games in Paris. In addition to her seven league titles with Chelsea, she has won five FA Cups, two League Cups and a Community Shield during her Blues career. Reflecting on her time at Chelsea, Hayes told BBC Sport: "I don't think I have the words really. I am full with a ton of different emotions. "Knowing it is the end and I won't be with this team or these fans again... but they're always in my heart. "I am ready, I have given everything I've got. ready for my next adventure."

Chelsea to announce Sonia Bompastor as Hayes successor..Nizaar Kinsella, Senior football news reporter.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/14/15/81262731-0-image-a-16_1707926172321.jpgChelsea are set to announce Lyon boss Sonia Bompastor as their new manager after the Champions League final this weekend. Bompastor, 43, is lined up to replace Emma Hayes next season but is aiming to bow out at Lyon on a high in the Champions League final against Barcelona on Saturday. The Blues have agreed to delay any announcement to avoid any distractions ahead of the showpiece match in Bilbao despite having an agreement with the French coach. Bompastor's assistant manager Camille Abily will also join her in west London. Hayes, 47, bows out at Chelsea after clinching a record fifth Women’s Super League title in a row after a 6-0 win at Manchester United on Saturday. She ends a sensational 12-year spell in west London where she has won 14 major domestic titles, including seven WSL titles, five FA Cups and two Conti Cups. Hayes immediately began working for the United States women’s national team after finishing the season with Chelsea to prepare for the summer Olympics in Paris.
