Fuka Nagano: Liverpool sign Japan midfielder from North Carolina Courage..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10F5D/production/_128296496_fuka1.jpgLiverpool have signed Japan international midfielder Fuka Nagano from the North Carolina Courage. Nagano, 23, has spent the past season in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) after winning league titles in Japan and South Korea. An Under-20 World Cup winner in 2018, she has since made 34 senior appearances for Japan. She becomes the Reds' third signing of the window following Gemma Bonner and Sofie Lundgaard's arrivals. Liverpool manager Matt Beard said: "She's excellent on the ball, creative and tactically astute while her international experience with Japan speaks for itself. "In club football, she's played in a highly tactical league in Japan but also in America, which is an athletic and transitional league, and the WSL is probably midway between the two."

The highly-rated 18-year-old will spend the remainder of this season on loan with Swedish side Hammarby IF. "I am really proud to sign for a club which in my opinion is number one in the world," said Hamano. Blues boss Emma Hayes added: "Maika is a fantastic talent. We are really looking forward to seeing how she develops during her time out on loan." Teenager Hamano scored two goals and provided one assist in seven appearances for Leonessa, the defending Japanese champions. At the Under-20 World Cup in Costa Rica in August, Hamano scored four goals and was named player of the tournament, winning the Golden Ball and Silver Boot before making her senior Japan international debut in October.

Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir wins landmark football maternity pay ruling..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1536C/production/_128329868_gettyimages-1240815847.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/CFDD/production/_128331235_gettyimages-1398502793.jpgIceland captain Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir says winning a claim against former side Lyon for failing to pay her full salary during pregnancy is a "wake-up call" for clubs. In May 2022, a Fifa tribunal ordered French side Lyon to pay unpaid salaries of more than 82,000 euros (£72,000). Player's union Fifpro called it a "landmark" case. "This is not 'just business'," said 32-year-old Gunnarsdottir after the ruling was made public on Tuesday. "This is about my rights as a worker, as a woman and as a human being." Writing in the Player's Tribune, the midfielder, who is now at Juventus, added: "The victory felt bigger than me. It felt like a guarantee of financial security for all players who want to have a child during their career. That it's not a 'maybe,' or an unknown. "But I want to make sure no one has to go through what I went through ever again." She also tweeted: "This story is bigger than me! It's a wake up-call for all clubs." Gunnarsdottir joined Lyon in 2020 and won two Champions League titles at the club before leaving for Juventus in July 2022. Since January 2021, Fifa rules state female players are entitled to a minimum of 14 weeks' maternity leave at two-thirds of their salary. The player, who fell pregnant in early 2021, agreed with Lyon she would return home to Iceland for the final stages of her pregnancy after she was told by doctors that she should stop playing football. Gunnarsdottir said she intended to return to Lyon but found that her payments stopped coming through when she was in Iceland. "I was entitled to my full salary during my pregnancy and until the start of my maternity leave, according to the mandatory regulations from Fifa," she added. "These are part of my rights, and this can't be disputed, even by a club as big as Lyon." Fifpro supported Gunnarsdottir in her claim and said: "We are pleased to have assisted her in achieving the first ruling of its kind since Fifa's maternity regulations came into force in January 2021. "It is extremely important for women footballers and the women's game that these mandatory maternity regulations are both implemented and enforced at national level." Lyon said they "put everything in place to support" Gunnarsdottir during her pregnancy and return to top-level football, but added that they were following French law, which they "have sometimes found too restrictive on these subjects". The club said they are "proud" to have welcomed her back to Lyon after maternity leave and that they "separated for purely sporting reasons". Lyon must pay Gunnarsdottir 82,094.82 euros - around £72,139 - plus 5% interest a year from 10 September last year until the debt has been cleared. World governing body Fifa warned Lyon that if they did not pay within 45 days of the decision then they would be given a transfer ban.

Mana Iwabuchi [Arsenal - Tottenham Hotspur] LoanMana Iwabuchi: Tottenham sign Japan midfielder on loan from WSL rivals Arsenal.. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6DBD/production/_128339082_gettyimages-1457405860-1.jpgTottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of midfielder Mana Iwabuchi on loan from Women's Super League rivals Arsenal. The Japan international midfielder, 29, has moved to Spurs for the rest of the season. Iwabuchi joined Arsenal in summer 2021 after a short spell at Aston Villa. However, she has made just three WSL appearances this season and moves to Tottenham seeking first-team action ahead of this summer's World Cup. Iwabuchi has scored 37 goals in 85 games for Japan and played a key role in their 2011 World Cup win, and is aiming to be in the squad for the 2023 tournament in Australia and New Zealand. She moved to English football with Villa in December 2020 from Japanese football, having previously played for Bayern Munich where she won the 2014-15 Frauen-Bundesliga. Iwabuchi will wear the number 20 shirt for Tottenham, and becomes the club's second major signing of the winter transfer window, following the arrival of striker Bethany England for a reported WSL-record fee from Chelsea. Spurs will hope their big-name signings can provoke an upturn in fortunes, as they have lost their last five league matches.

Miri Taylor: Liverpool sign midfielder from Angel City..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1F4F/production/_128351080_miri2.jpgLiverpool have signed midfielder Miri Taylor from Angel City. The 22-year-old spent one season with the NWSL side, where she made 11 appearances. "When I went to America, I always imagined coming back to the WSL - that was always my dream, to play football in England at the highest level I can," Taylor said. Taylor was selected by Angel City in the 2022 draft after coming through the ranks at Chelsea. She made her senior debut for the Blues at 16-years-old before spending a season on loan with Arsenal then moving to Hofstra University in New York. The Gillingham-born player, who can play in midfield or any of the three forward roles, said it is a "dream come true" to return to her native England. "My mum is a massive Liverpool fan so just for her it's amazing to be here and I'm really excited to get started. To come home and play in the WSL is always something I've wanted to do," she said. "I really hope for Liverpool I can be someone very dependable and reliable, a good centre midfielder who will break up play, get involved, be physical and counter quickly, be a bit of a leader in the middle, assist and score." Liverpool boss Matt Beard said: "We're absolutely delighted to bring Miri to Liverpool. She will add real versatility to the squad, technically she's a very gifted player and a season in the NWSL last year has given her experience of a physical, transitional league as well." Following the arrivals of Gemma Bonner, Sofie Lundgaard and Fuka Nagano, Taylor is the fourth signing of the January window for Beard, whose side are ninth in the WSL after 10 games.

Lydia Williams: Brighton sign PSG goalkeeper..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BB8F/production/_128351084_capture.pngBrighton have signed former Arsenal goalkeeper Lydia Williams from Paris St-Germain until the end of the 2023-24 season. The 34-year-old has previously played at Melbourne City, OL Reign and Pitea. "I am sure Lydia will have a big impact," said Brighton coach Jen Scheuer. "Hopefully, we will see some of her wonderful saves." The Australian has played in two World Cups and three Asia Cups, winning her 100th Matildas cap in June. "Now we have three good goalkeepers, the competition will be a lot stronger and that's good for the team," said Scheuer. "Well done to everyone involved in making sure Lydia is a Brighton player, we're delighted to have her." Williams, who joined PSG last summer on a one-year-deal, was part of the Arsenal squad that finished second in the WSL last season having won four A-League titles with Melbourne City and Canberra United.

Deyna Castellanos gave City the lead in the first half with a cool finish from Khadija Shaw's slide-rule pass. But Hanson, on loan from Manchester United, levelled two minutes later from Rachel Daly's searching cross. Villa came closest to finding a winner in the second half but Hanson hit the post and Kenza Dali's long-range effort was well saved by Ellie Roebuck. Aston Villa boss Carla Ward to Sky Sports: "We are delighted with a point but are a little bit disappointed we didn't win the game." What's the secret to their recent success: "Togetherness. If you ask the players what's our number one attribute is it's our environment, it is half the battle. If you look after each other as people and players it gives you every chance. There are moments in the game where you have to have your team-mate's back. You need that at times and we great pride in that." On the number of offsides during the game: "It's the new combinations. Jordan [Nobbs] is playing slightly advanced. It needs a little bit of work but we are two games in and it is now about developing those relationships." Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought it was flat. Even before we scored we were a bit slow to everything - slow in our play, in our reactions. We score a good goal and give a cheap one away soon afterwards. "When you leave a big hole in the middle of the goal then you'll concede or have an opportunity for the opposition to score. It affected us more than it should've done. That's football." On only pickup up a point: "On other days we lose the way that we play today. We weren't clicking, not much cohesion. To come away against a decent Villa team with a point is better than losing the game. "You can't worry about dropping a point. We're still unbeaten, that's a positive for us. There's a lot of football still to play so we just attack the next game.

"Jayde is an exciting young player who matches the long-term version of United," said head coach Marc Skinner. The 26-year old joined the Women's Super League side in 2021 and helped them maintain their league status in the club's debut season. Brougham made 11 appearances for Leicester with the 8-0 loss to Chelsea in December her only one this season. Leicester sit bottom of the table having won their first points of the season on Sunday against Brighton. Brougham came through the academy at Manchester City before joining Everton in 2016, and enjoyed two loan stints at Birmingham City during their time in the WSL where she made 18 appearances. She is boss Willie Kirk's fourth departure of the January window after Demi Vance, plus Ellen Jones and Connie Scofield on loan. An inspection took place at Kingsmeadow at 09:30 GMT and the game went ahead as scheduled three hours later. But referee Paul Howard swiftly stopped the action, deeming the conditions too dangerous to play on. "The game should never have started. We have to put player safety first," said Chelsea manager Emma Hayes. Ground staff had used covers and heat blowers to thaw the pitch in Kingston upon Thames, but Howard said too many slips had happened in the opening moments of the game for it to continue safely. Some visiting fans had set off at 5am to see their side take on the WSL leaders in the first game of the day. Brighton v Arsenal - 6.45pm - PPichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13F17/production/_128378618_gettyimages-1457483687.jpgBrighton & Hove Albion's Women's Super League match at home to Arsenal has been postponed because of a frozen pitch at Crawley's Broadfield Stadium. The surface was deemed unplayable during an afternoon inspection before the 18:45 GMT kick-off on Sunday. The WSL's second-bottom side are rearranging the visit from the Gunners. Leicester City's trip to Tottenham was postponed earlier in the day, while Chelsea's home game against Liverpool was abandoned after six minutes.

Everton 3 (Holmgaard 3, Finnigan 12, Beever-Jones 70) West Ham United 0ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9841/production/_128377983_gettyimages-1458483649.jpgEverton put in a strong display to see off mid-table rivals West Ham and boost their position in the Women's Super League table. On a freezing afternoon in Merseyside, which led to a delayed kick-off, the Toffees quickly gave their fans something to cheer about when Karen Holmgaard headed in the opener after three minutes. West Ham barely had time to settle before Everton doubled their advantage in the 12th minute when Megan Finnigan capitalised from a smart corner routine. Everton continued to dominate and victory was confirmed in the second half when substitute Aggie Beever-Jones thumped in a superb third goal, adding to a miserable day for West Ham. The Toffees had the best chances throughout with defender Gabby George having a shot blocked by Grace Fisk after scuffing an effort wide under pressure from Kate Longhurst in a busy first half. Everton were threatening down the right-hand side in particular, with Nicoline Sorensen impressing and Jess Park causing problems. Paul Konchesky's West Ham side eventually settled and found Lisa Evans in space out wide but forward Dagny Brynjarsdottir was largely starved of service in a frustrating opening 45 minutes for the Hammers. The second half was not much better for the visitors as Everton almost scored again within seconds of the restart when Park slid a dangerous ball across the six-yard area and Kirsty Smith had to react. On-loan Blues goalkeeper Emily Ramsey was tested on set-pieces but was relatively unfazed overall as Everton won comfortably in an impressive performance. The result sees Everton jump up to fifth in the table, continuing their development under manager Brian Sorensen, while West Ham remain in seventh place. After spurning a number of chances, United took until the 87th minute to score as Williams broke down the left and then jinked inside before firing into the top corner. He added: "We played against Estelle in the Toulouse Cup in the summer, and it was clear to see what she can add to our group." Cascarino, formerly of Bordeaux, Paris FC and Lyon, said: "On the pitch I am a fighter and like to help the team in both attack and defence. I cannot wait to get started here in England."

WSL: Chelsea v Liverpool postponement after six minutes 'embarrassing'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/17FE5/production/_128377289_b0953a24b2840cfaf58c7f5c1fe572262867837a.jpgThe postponement of Chelsea v Liverpool six minutes into their Women's Super League game due to a frozen pitch has been described as "embarrassing". The game - live on BBC Two - had kicked off as scheduled at 12:30 GMT at Kingsmeadow in Kingston upon Thames following an earlier pitch inspection. But just six minutes had gone when referee Neil Hair took the teams off, deeming the pitch unsafe. Reds boss Matt Beard said the decision to kick off risked players' safety. The sequence of events on Sunday - starting with a 09:30 pitch inspection and ending with players slipping over and disappointed supporters being addressed by Chelsea boss Emma Hayes - was widely criticised by the managers and pundits, as well as players on social media. Chelsea midfielder Erin Cuthbert said she was "angry and frustrated" about what had happened. The Football Association and WSL said the referee had initially deemed the pitch unplayable following the first inspection, but changed that decision after a second inspection before the players' warm-up, after a pitch cover and heaters had been used. "However, shortly after kick-off, the referee made the decision to abandon the match in order to protect the safety of the players, which is paramount," a statement said. "We sincerely apologise to all fans who travelled to the match." According to the FA, the decision on whether a pitch is safe to play is only decided by the match referee and not the league or competing teams. Speaking to BBC Sport immediately after the postponement, Hayes said the women's game must be taken more "seriously", while Beard said: "It shouldn't have been played in the first place." The Liverpool boss added: "Whoever made the decision for the game to be on, it's put players at risk today." Hayes said it was "time for undersoil heating" at all WSL games, adding: "The game should never have started." Chelsea had been hoping to extend their four-point lead over Manchester United at the top of the Women's Super League. "It's not for managers to decide if it's on - it's up to the FA and officials," Hayes added. "We have to say to ourselves that it's time for undersoil heating. We've got to take our game seriously. Yes, we can have our blowers and pitch tents but it's not enough." The FA's timeline of events
First pitch inspection at 09:30, when the pitch was covered and heat blowers were being used. Pitch deemed unplayable. However, it was agreed to inspect it again closer to kick-off, following the further use of a cover and heaters. Before kick-off, the referee then deemed the surface playable. The pitch continued to improve, and the covers were removed as late as possible before the warm-up. At the start of the warm-up, the pitch was again inspected and found to be playable at that time. Match kicks off. Soon after kick-off, with temperatures still around zero degrees, the pitch deteriorated and for reasons of player safety, the referee abandoned the match. 'Not good enough' - reactionFormer England player Fara Williams, who was working as a BBC pundit, added: "It should have been called off before the girls had come on the pitch." Other big names have been quick to have their say on the abandonment on social media. England and Arsenal's Beth Mead said the situation was "not good enough", while her Arsenal team-mate Vivianne Miedema wrote: "FA and clubs, please do better."

She departs Lionesses five days before their FA Cup fourth-round tie with Women's Super League side Tottenham. "This has been an incredibly tough decision and one I haven't taken lightly," she said. "However, I feel the staff, players and processes we have in place are so strong that they will continue to keep the club on the current trajectory. "I have so much care and respect for every person at London City. With such strong vision and values, I know the club can establish itself to be a successful Women's Super League entity and serve the women's game for years to come." London City, who were founded in 2019 as an independent breakaway club from Millwall Lionesses, are top of the Championship with 24 points from 11 games. Their FA Cup match with Spurs will be shown live on the BBC Sport website.
