MONDAY 20th NOVEMBER 2023 - EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP - QUALIFYING GROUP C
North Macedonia 1 (Bardhi 41) England 1 (Atanasov 59 og)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7767/production/_131776503_gettyimages-1804595207.jpg North Macedonia were given a controversial penalty at the end of the first halfAlready-qualified England got the point they needed to secure a top seeding at Euro 2024 with an unconvincing draw away to North Macedonia in their final qualifying match. The hosts were awarded a controversial penalty at the end of the first half when England debutant Rico Lewis caught striker Bojan Miovski with his hand as he jumped up for a header. North Macedonia captain Enis Bardhi put his side ahead from the rebound after his spot-kick was saved by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. England equalised in the 59th minute when Phil Foden's corner deflected in off Macedonian Jani Atanasov under pressure from Harry Kane. The draw sealed England's place in pot one for the draw for next summer's European Championship in Germany as one of the top five group winners, with 20 points from eight qualifying matches. England unconvincing in drawEngland were routinely frustrated in Skopje against a North Macedonia side who were hammered 7-0 by the Three Lions at Old Trafford in June. Gareth Southgate's team made a promising start. Declan Rice hit the post with a driven shot from the edge of the box in the 14th minute before Ollie Watkins sent a free header wide seconds later. Midway through the first half Harry Maguire was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he nudged over Elif Elmas in the box. The penalty England did concede on the stroke of half-time though was harsh on the visitors. Slovakian referee Filip Glova had initially waved play on when Lewis caught Aberdeen striker Miovski, but awarded the hosts a spot-kick after consulting the pitch-side monitor. Seconds into the second half England had a goal ruled out for offside after Jack Grealish had timed his run too early before he bundled in Bukayo Saka's cross. Their leveller eventually came just before the hour mark when substitute Kane did enough to panic defender Atanasov into deflecting Foden's corner into his own net. England looked the likelier to grab a late winner but, just as they did for most of the game, struggled to break down their opponent's low block. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/061F/production/_131776510_gettyimages-1804620534.jpgLewis impresses despite conceding penaltyTeenager Lewis became England's 20th youngest player, making his debut a day before his 19th birthday. The versatile Manchester City player made his club debut less than 12 months ago, but has impressed for Pep Guardiola's side this campaign in defence and midfield. He looked lively from left-back at Tose Proeski Arena, firing a shot over the bar inside the first three minutes. After conceding a penalty and collecting a yellow card for his foul, he forced Macedonian keeper Stole Dimitrievski into a fine diving save just before the break. Kyle Walker also became the 126th player to captain England, filling in for Kane until the Bayern Munich forward came on in the second half. England end their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign unbeaten and next face Brazil and Belgium in friendlies in March.

England fan, Garford Beck, who was at the game last night, speaking to BBC 5 Live this morning: "We had a fans' match on Saturday night against a fourth division team out in North Macedonia and, quite frankly, our fans' match was ten times the game that we saw last night. We won that 3-2 with a last-minute penalty. "Last night was hugely disappointing. This was a team we put seven past not long ago." On Gareth Southgate's future as England manager: "I’m a little bit ambivalent. When you’ve been following England as long as I have, for the last few years it’s not been too bad really! "When you consider some of the disappointments we’ve had to put up with in recent years, you can’t really complain too much. It’s a different kettle of fish being an international manager compared to being a club manager." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/21/34a76735-4224-440d-8700-5c3475d95edf.jpgGet Involved - England reaction..
Jaman, Coventry: Is this how how number 1 ranked teams play?? Southgate needs to take a reality check. Good teams find a way of winning!! Paul: Why are people playing down the last two performances just because England have qualified? Whether we like it or not the squad of players available won't be a great deal different to when the tournament starts so add that to the negative tactics of the manager then it'll be another failed attempt at a major tournament. European teams are weaker than 10 years ago so this one is a great chance to win, but we need positive, front-foot football. Michael: I reckon the March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium will be a better indicator of England's chances than these last two games. Tom: England have been very good under Southgate and he deserves a lot of credit. However, could they be brilliant under a new manager rather than just very good. Perhaps Southgate has taken them as far as he can... Dave: We always seem to have this conversation, and in the past it's been justified. But Southgate has a solid track record in tournament football itself, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt and see if he can make that final step in Germany. Mike: A dead rubber, along with a dead duck in black and some very dead ducks in VAR - 3 minutes to decide Grealish was offside? Even an avid England fan like my 10 year old said it in live play!

Having seen VAR at work last night, and also watching a lot of Bundesliga football, I've come to the conclusion that VAR is just not worth it.

Having seen VAR at work last night, and also watching a lot of Bundesliga football, I've come to the conclusion that VAR is just not worth it. I was a big supporter of VAR when it was announced as a form of getting to the correct result quickly and fans could go home content in its value... But as you say, is it really worth the hassle with so many long delays, last night's was a farce, the naked eye could tell within seconds... Unless they sort it out quickly this season then i think if they put it to a vote the clubs themselves may well do away with it.

Fury over England's 'woke' kit: Fans outraged as Nike and FA turn St George's cross purple and blue..by Mike Keegan & Sami Mokbel.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/22/13/82753437-13225469-It_is_understood_the_flag_rejig_was_presented_by_a_Nike_employee-a-2_1711115086228.jpgThere was widespread fury on Thursday over England’s controversial new shirt which features an altered version of the St George’s cross on the collar. The FA and manufacturers Nike doubled down on the design, insisting they have no plans to recall the jersey. Nike describe the navy, light blue and purple colours as a ‘playful update’ on the nation’s flag. They say the changed kit is not virtue-signalling but instead a nod to the 1966 World Cup winners. Fans & commentators disagree & have reacted angrily since the release of the kit — which England will wear at Euro 2024 this summer — branding it ‘woke’ & ‘dumb’. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/21/21/82753429-0-image-a-3_1711057826160.jpg‘No other country would allow this to happen,’ said Mail Sport columnist Simon Jordan. ‘They wouldn’t allow it to be done on their national shirt. This is the same Nike who couldn’t even be bothered to produce Mary Earps (Lionesses keeper) shirts. 'I don’t think we should be taking lessons from Nike on the values of this country. And the FA are absolutely complicit. The FA will have their virtue-signalling fingers all over this. ‘I don’t quite understand why Nike want to have a “playful” brief on our identity. I don’t understand why we would want to do this. Is our national identity a joke, is it something we’re ashamed of? 'Our national identity is something we should be proud of. I don’t find this offensive. I find it unnecessary.’ However, Nike will not alter the jersey, which they claim is a nod to England’s 1966 training gear and is said to have ‘flown off the shelves’ since its release on Monday. That did not impress Chris Sutton, who described the design as a ‘load of b******s’ on our It’s All Kicking Off podcast. ‘To unite and inspire?’ he added. ‘By changing a flag? It’s like The Apprentice when Lord Sugar sends them out to do tasks. It looks like a massive cock-up. What are they thinking? Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also waded into the debate, saying: ‘The flag’s unifying, it doesn’t need to change. We just need to be proud of it. So I think they should just reconsider this and change it back.’ Reform UK MP Lee Anderson blasted the move and told the Daily Express: ‘The Left have a nerve to ask me why I want my country back. This virtue-signalling, namby-pamby, pearl-clutching, woke nonsense must stop.’

As the England shirt ( £115:00 and above) mess goes into overdrive, then things go berserk in Germany as the German FA ditch the home country kit makers of 70 years for Nike.. a matter of Adidas paying 50 million Euros....and Nike dishing out a mahooosive 100 million Euros...which has the country in uproar...and ultimately the supporters now having to pay a premium for the new product...only a game Saint!!

Adding to the above post: Row erupts over German football team switching supplier from Adidas to Nike..By Tom Espiner, Business reporter, BBC News.www.arunfoot.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/adidas-Germany-2022-home-kit.jpgThe German Football Association's (DFB) decision to switch the supplier of the national team's kit away from Adidas has been blasted by politicians. The contract will pass from the German company to US firm Nike from 2027. Economy Minister Robert Habeck said he would have "liked a bit more local patriotism", while Health Minister Karl Lauterbach called the decision "wrong". The DFB said the deal made financial sense and would support grassroots German football. Adidas has supplied the kit for the German national football team for more than 70 years. However, according to reports in the German press, Nike agreed to pay about €100m (£86m; $108m) per year to supply the kit, doubling Adidas's payment of €50m. The deal, announced on Thursday, was greeted with dismay by German politicians on the left and right. "I can hardly imagine the German jersey without the three stripes," Mr Habeck said. "For me, Adidas and black-red-gold always belonged together. A piece of German identity." Mr Lauterbach said on X, formerly Twitter, it was "a wrong decision where commerce destroys a tradition and a piece of home". And Bavarian premier Markus Soeder said the national team always plays in the three stripes of Adidas. "That was as clear as the fact that the ball is round and a game lasts 90 minutes," he said. "The success story began in 1954 with the unforgettable World Cup victory, which gave our country self-confidence again. That's why it's wrong, a shame and also incomprehensible that this story should end now." www.arunfoot.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/adidas-Germany-2016-home-kit-660x330.jpgHe said German football should not be "a pawn in international corporate battles" and that "commerce isn't everything". The DFB said on X that it understood the emotional reaction to its decision, saying switching supplier after 70 years was a "drastic event" that "doesn't leave us cold". However, it said the grassroots of German football, with "more than 24,000 football clubs, 2.2 million active players, the numerous volunteers and almost 55,000 referees", is financed by the DFB. "Against this background, the DFB has to make economic decisions," it said. "Nike made by far the best financial offer in the transparent and non-discriminatory tender process." "The future partnership with Nike ensures that we can continue to carry out our central tasks for football in the coming decade," it added. The announcement of the Nike deal comes just months ahead of Euro 2024. Germany's men's team is using Adidas's headquarters in Herzogenaurach, near Nuremberg, as its base for the tournament, which Germany is hosting. Adidas said it would not comment on contractual details. The row over the German kit comes as politicians in England criticise a Nike design for the England team kit. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the St George's Cross should not be "messed with" after Nike used different colours, adding navy, light blue and purple to the traditional red. The FA has defended the design, saying "it is not the first time" different colours have been used.

England v Brazil: Harry Kane absence offers 'brilliant opportunity' for striking duo..i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article32411285.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_Gareth-Southgate-File-Photo.jpgEngland captain Harry Kane and midfielders Cole Palmer and Jordan Henderson will all miss Saturday's game with Brazil at Wembley. It is the first of two home friendlies for England, with a game against Belgium to follow on Tuesday. "I would say Cole and Hendo have a better chance for Belgium than Harry - he'd be extremely doubtful for that," said England boss Gareth Southgate. "It's a brilliant opportunity for other players." The injury to England's all-time top scorer Kane could give either Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins or Brentford's Ivan Toney a rare opportunity to impress in the final England games before the Euro 2024 warm-up games in June. Watkins, with 16 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League this season, is the only player to reach double figures in both. Toney has scored four goals since returning from an eight-month ban over gambling offences in January. Asked whether they were competing for one spot in the squad, Southgate added: "That is a decision that we have to make. A nine is a specialist position but they have different attributes. "It would depend a little bit on the injury status in other positions in the squad and also having perhaps players that can play more than one role. "I think both of them are aware that the opportunity is a big one. But they're both in good form, they've both had time with us. "Ollie's been with us more recently, of course, and has done well in the games he's played. He's had a fabulous season for his club. "Ivan, since he's come back into Brentford's team, has had the impact we expected him to, so they are two very, very good players." England are on a 10-match unbeaten run, winning eight and drawing two, since losing to France in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup. In contrast, Brazil are on a three-match losing run, having fallen to Uruguay, Colombia and Argentina in World Cup qualifiers. It is their worst run of form in 22 years. England have only won four of their previous 26 games against Brazil, most recently a 2013 friendly. Their last meeting was a goalless draw in November 2017. It will be Dorival Jr's first game as Brazil head coach, having been hired in January. Team News:England have four uncapped players in their squad. Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, 18, is one of those, having initially been called up to the under-21s. Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, 21, Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon, 23, and Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, 26, are also hoping to make their debuts. England are without Kane, Henderson, Palmer, Kieran Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Jack Grealish, Luke Shaw and Kalvin Phillips, while Ben White did not want to be considered for selection. Bukayo Saka was called up but withdrew from the squad on Thursday. As for Brazil, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes, Ederson, Marquinhos and Casemiro have all withdrawn from the squad because of injuries. Eleven Brazil players could earn their first caps including Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes and Girona winger Savio, who will be playing for Manchester City next season. Richarlison (below) has urged anyone suffering from mental health issues to “have the courage to find help” after refinding his fitness and form at Tottenham. The £60million Brazil striker suffered criticism from his football-mad nation during the last World Cup. And he was reduced to tears following the win over Bolivia last September when he said he would "seek psychological help". i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32393331.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_GettyImages-1244964163.jpg

"It's only a friendly" some may say but this is yet another borefest from England.
It seems decades since we've had a progressive England side, one that would look to front foot the game and put their bodies on the line.
I'm annoyed with myself for bothering to watch as it was all so predictable.

FT 0-1.
England stale and predictable. Awful, awful performance from England.
I've been a Southgate supporter until now but he is clearly not the one to get the best out of this "golden generation".

FULL-TIME - England 0-1 Brazil
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CDC8/production/_132608625_gettyimages-1995747674.jpg England manager Gareth Southgate speaking on Channel 4: "There were lots of very good performances. It is a top level game and we have controlled long parts of it. We had as many attempts as them on goal but in the end it is that ruthless moment that decides the game. "We've had a lot of players go on, a couple of debuts and some really important individual performances for us." On Anthony Gordon and Ollie Watkins: "Very good. Anthony was excellent both sides of his game. With 15 minutes to go there were lots of changes and I think at the point the crowd were really pleased with the performance. Of course when you lose the game it turns negative but we have to keep the context with that." "We played from the back really well. I am happy with a lot of that performance. On Ben Chilwell: "He was aggressive in his defending and gave us that width. We have to manage him carefully so him, [Harry] Maguire, Jude [Bellingham], we needed to physically to get them off the pitch so that didn't help the rhythm of the game. "We don't know yet [on Kyle Walker's injury]. He is feeling something but he is not a player that is injured very often so he is not quite certain what it is so we will have to assess it over the next couple of days." England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think with 10 minutes to go we thought we played well here. "We have seen a lot of players with not a lot of England caps and we have held our own in possession and had attempts on goal. "But, that one ruthless moment changes the game. "They have clearly got some fabulous forwards and you have to defend well. "We had one or two moments we didn't do that and our goalkeeper saved us on occasions. "We never looked like we were being carved apart and turned over possession a lot, we managed to counter-attack but didn't find the final finish." On getting the best out of Phil Foden: "I think at moments we saw that. "We have several players missing so some of the combinations are different. Him and Jude combined well, but again he is playing against a high level side and we are not dominating 75% of the ball which at times is the case with his club." On the debutants: "I though Ezra Konsa to come on at that moment and deal with Vinicius was excellent, a really mature performance. "I thought Anthony Gordon had been in an England shirt for a long time. He looked settled with it, a couple of attempts on goal - he took his club form into an England shirt. "Kobbie Mainoo, it was nice to get him on the pitch and he showed moments of composure and that is evidence what he has been doing with the club." On England's injured players: "Harry Kane won't be fit for Tuesday so he will go back to his club. "With Kyle Walker, we are not sure. He was feeling some tightness and it was something we couldn't take a chance on. "Cole Palmer and Jordan Henderson trained this morning, but we have to see how they come through that next phase."
